Das Buch behandelt Möglichkeiten und Wege, Entscheidungsträger in Unternehmen auf allen Management-Ebenen computerbasiert zu unterstützen. Dabei geht es weniger um die Rationalisierung bekannter Arbeitsabläufe, sondern vielmehr um die Nutzung moderner Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien bei der Bewältigung komplexer, wenig strukturierter Problemstellungen. Wesentliches Ziel des Buches ist es daher, unter Einbeziehung neuester wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen wie der Informatik, der Betriebswirtschaftslehre, der Kognitions-, der Sozial- und der Organisationspsychologie einen ganzheitlichen, benutzerorientierten Entwicklungsansatz für derartige Systeme aufzuzeigen. Darüber hinaus werden Möglichkeiten der Integration von Entscheidungsunterstützungssystemen und wissensbasierten Systemen untersucht. Es werden neue Anwendungsgebiete wie Führungs-Informationssysteme und Gruppen-Entscheidungsunterstützungssysteme diskutiert. Abschließend wird beispielhaft eine praktische Umsetzung einiger Untersuchungsergebnisse anhand eines einfachen Entscheidungsunterstützungssystem-Prototyps beschrieben.
