Nile have announced their 10th studio album, The Underworld Awaits Us All, arriving August 23rd via Napalm Records. The LP marks their first full-length effort in five years.
The South Carolina death metal vets also offered up the lead single, the title of which we’ll put here verbatim: “Chapter for Not Being Hung Upside Down on a Stake in the Underworld and Made to Eat Feces by the Four Apes.”
It’s a vicious number with frenzied percussion, whiplashing stop-starts, and classic thrash riffs that have a hint of late ’80s Sepultura. True to the band’s Egyptian concept, the video sees the band playing amidst a sandstorm at the pyramids thanks to some effective green-screen captures.
“’Chapter for not being Hung Upside Down’ is one of our favorite tracks on the new record,” stated singer-guitarist Karl Sanders. “It’s a lot of fun to play, challenging and unpredictable,...

Living Colour frontman Corey Glover has formed a new band, Sonic Universe, who have shared their debut single “I Am” from their forthcoming album, It Is What It Is, out May 10th.
The group sees Glover in collaboration with guitarist/producer Mike Orlando (Adrenaline Mob), bassist Booker King, and drummer Taykwuan Jackson.
Glover’s longtime band Living Colour — which remains active — is a good frame of reference for Sonic Universe. On “I Am,” the band lays down a very Living Colour-esque brand of funk metal while Glover’s commanding voice soars in full flight. Doubling as the album opener, the upbeat jam is a fitting way to launch a new chapter in the singer’s career.
Running 10 tracks in length, It Is What It Is was produced, engineered, and mixed by Orlando at Sonic Stomp Studios. Pre-orders are available via earMUSIC.
As mentioned, Glover still remains active with Living Colour...

Piers Morgan’s Twitter account was hacked overnight and spewed a series of crass and racist comments for nearly an hour before it was shut down and wiped clean.
The feed for British TV commentator’s program on Sky, “Piers Morgan Uncensored,” posted a screenshot of his now-blank profile, stating, “In case you were wondering, @piersmorgan has been hacked.”
In addition to removing the F-word and N-word strewn comments, Twitter wiped clean all other posts Morgan has shared with his 8.3 million followers since he joined the platform in November 2010.
“Any chance of getting him back, @elonmusk?” the “Piers Morgan Uncensored” post asked Twitter’s owner.

Shelley H. Surpin, a longtime entertainment lawyer and partner at Surpin, Mayersohn & Coghill in Los Angeles, has died. She was 72. Her firm said Surpin died September 3 of complications following a stroke.
A champion for independent film, helped with the careers of such filmmakers as Greg Araki, Nicole Holofcener, Paul Mazur, Allison Anders, Zal Batmanglij, Brit Marling, Mike Cahill and Tom Flynn, among many others.
Surpin began practicing entertainment law at Pollock, Rigrod and Bloom (later Bloom Hergott), eventually becoming partners with Andy Rigrod and founding Rigrod and Surpin.

In its first-ever chance to be part of Deadline’s Contenders Television event, Disney+ chose its original movie Togo to highlight in its panel session, with director-cinematographer Ericson Cole, writer Tom Flynn and star Willem Dafoe joining a virtual panel to discuss the imposing logistics of mounting this true-life family adventure about an extraordinary sled dog and his master as he leads a team in a harrowing journey to deliver much-needed serum in 1925 in Nome, Alaska.
In this case, Dafoe explained it was important to use real dog actors, not CGI versions, since most of the film was done with practical action in actual challenging locations. “The animals are there because we want them to be animals. You have to be patient and we were pretty loose with it,“ said Dafoe. “The sled dogs are very athletic, very trained. I had to really learn from them.”

“I was struck by the fact that the story was wrong,” exclaims writer Tom Flynn of his new Disney+ film “Togo.” The thrilling movie details the true story of the 1925 Great Race of Mercy in Alaska, and the heroic dog Togo who led the journey. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Many people incorrectly believe that the sled dog who saved the day was Balto. After all, that husky has plenty of accolades, statues, and an animated feature of his own. “Balto is not to be diminished” admits Flynn, but he only completed the final leg of the serum run. Musher Leonhard Seppala (portrayed in the film by Oscar nominee Willam Dafoe), and his dog team led by Togo, ran the majority of the trek through dangerous conditions. Flynn’s film sets out to tell the true tale of this brave canine.

Disney+ movie Togo tells the true story of a musher and his hero dog on an Alaskan tundra trek to deliver serum for an outbreak.
Togo, a fact-based movie about a legendary dog sled run to deliver an outbreak-combatting serum, may have the makings of an inspirationally adventurous family-driven Disney theatrical offering, but the film is instead headed to a device near you as a (non-Mandalorian) offering on streaming platform Disney+.
Four-time Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe headlines Togo as Norwegian sled rider Leonhard Seppala, sharing top billing with the film’s eponymous character, a 12-year-old hero dog who, despite his advanced age, leads Seppala’s team on a perilous 1925 trek across 674 miles of the Alaskan tundra from Seward to deliver life-saving serum to those suffering from a diphtheria outbreak in Nome.
Ericson Core directed Togo, bringing experience from 2015’s Point Break remake and 2006 Mark Walhberg-headlined Vince Papale biopic Invincible.

Yes, yes, there’s Willem Dafoe, but Ericson Core’s moving historical drama “Togo” is a canine-obsessed affair. And why shouldn’t it be? The Disney+ original joins a long line of classic predecessors like “Balto,” “Iron Will,” “White Fang,” and a ballooning number of “Call of the Wild” adaptations, though this one has a bit more on its mind than the rest of its doggy brethren. While even casual dogsledding fans likely know the name of Balto — a brave sled dog who inspired both his own animated franchise and a popular statue in Central Park — few are familiar with Togo, arguably the real hero of the so-called “Great Race of Mercy.”
, and Core’s drama seems poised to break out as the streaming service’s first true crowdpleasing hit. Tom Flynn’s screenplay wedges in a hefty amount of fact-based drama (with a few curious tweaks), and while those...

Willem Dafoe will star in Disney’s “Togo” live-action movie about two of the key figures in the 1925 Nome Serum Run — sled dog Togo and sled driver Leonhard Seppala.
Disney is developing “Togo” for its streaming service, which will launch late next year. Ericson Core, whose credits include “Invincible” and the remake of “Point Break,” is directing.
Nome, Alaska became famous in 1925 as the destination of the serum run, also known as the Great Race of Mercy, in which dog sleds played a major role in transporting diphtheria serum through harsh conditions over nearly 700 miles to save the city from an epidemic. Gunnar Kaasen and his lead sled dog Balto became known for running the final leg of the run while the 12-year-old lead dog Togo and Seppala ran the penultimate and longest leg in temperatures that were 30 degrees below zero in gale force winds.

Marc Webb’s child-custody weepie has an honest edge, while Brendan Gleeson and Emma Thompson raise the stakes of a Nazi resistance drama
My esteemed colleague Mark Kermode often talks of Altitude Adjusted Lachrymosity Syndrome (Aals), the tendency we have to vulnerably cry buckets while watching films – often wholly unremarkable ones – on planes. That would handily explain my reaction to Gifted (Fox, 12), a slick, soap-scrubbed and shamelessly tear-engineered child-custody drama, if not for the annoying detail that it caught me very much on terra firma. Perhaps it’s not that unremarkable after all.
A sore streak of honest feeling runs through The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb’s weepie; ditto the fresh, true performances from Chris Evans, as the adoring but no-bullshit uncle and guardian of a seven-year-old maths genius, and from McKenna Grace, beguiling but never cutesily camera-trained as the tyke in question. Marc Webb goes from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to Gifted, starring Chris Evans. Here's our review...
When the moment comes for Chris Evans to put down Captain America's shield, we'll be sorry to see the back of one of the best big screen superhero portrayals ever. But Marvel's loss will be cinema's gain, going by the interesting projects he's chosen between his more red, white and blue escapades. In Gifted, he's put whatever blockbuster clout he may have behind a project that deserves it, and the result is one of the year's nicest surprises.
Evans plays Frank Adler, a boat mechanic who lives in Florida with his seven-year-old niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) and a one-eyed rescue cat called Fred. Mary is a child prodigy who immediately captures the attention of her first-grade teacher Bonnie (Jenny Slate) with her advanced grasp of maths.

Plot contrivances and a copout ending compromise a film that tries to tackle the issue of a child prodigy caught up in family battles
There are one or two first-act laughs and nice moments in this spirited heartwarmer from screenwriter Tom Flynn, once much admired in script form on the 2014 Black List of unproduced screenplays. Yet the interesting touches give way to unconvincing contrivances and a final copout. Marc Webb (of The Amazing Spider-Man and (500) Days of Summer) directs. Chris Evans plays Frank, a hunky, beardedly handsome single guy in Florida with the entirely preposterous Kevin-Costner-ish job of “fixing boats”. His former job is, incidentally, no less implausible – disillusioned college professor. Frank is now legal guardian to his orphaned niece, Mary, who at seven years old is a brilliant maths whiz, and so was her troubled mum whom we see in a photo with a super-brainy short haircut. It’s not often that one goes into a movie expecting yet another piece of Hollywood schmaltz, only to be completely taken aback by its simple yet hugely effective premise. In Gifted, director Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) offers a beautifully crafted story, which while not being completely without fault, manages to be charming and thoroughly engaging. In just a couple of days the Summer blockbuster season will get a big jump-start (hey Spring’s not yet a month old) when those magnificent men (and women) in their flying “muscle-car” machines start spinning their wheels and defying gravity at the multiplex. As they rev their engines here’s a quiet little “heart-tugger’ about family and kids that stars a guy that usually helps usher in the big popcorn flicks as Marvel Studios’ patriotic powerhouse. Like many “swinging” singles from TV (“Family Affair”) and cinema (Raising Helen), he’s tackling unexpected parenthood after the tragic demise of the birth mother. And things get even more complicated, when (as in other recent films like Little Man Tate) the child is a genius, brainy, or as the title proclaims, Gifted.

There are few words that can kill a film quicker than cute – just say to yourself, "Gosh, what a cute movie that was," and you can practically feel the inside of your mouth lined with a thin, granular film of Nutra-Sweet. It's one thing, of course, to plunk down cash to watch grumpy old coots and/or kids say the darnedest things, or bask in the cinematic equivalent of a puppy licking a baby's head. We, too, have done this. We don't judge you. Those things are a shucks-and-awww attack,...

Stories about prodigies are too often mired in tragic mental health issues or careers with boundless accolades and successes. Some can be done very well and others are redundant to the point of avoidance. The sub-genre of child prodigies is oftentimes even worse because it generally targets young audiences and therefore never possesses the nuance to be anything more than an upward trajectory with few pitfalls to traverse along the way. Either the child is stewarded by a selfless adult to greatness or the child is positioned to remind the adult what is great about his/her life. An authentic depiction of humanity’s familial messiness and misguided self-interest rarely appears. So Marc Webb‘s Gifted proves a welcome variation on the model despite also falling prey to its conventions.

Spending the better part of five years caught up in the meat-grinder gears of the superhero industrial complex has to do certain things to a director. Especially a director who started out making a handcrafted, small-scale bauble like 2009’s 500 Days of Summer. But Marc Webb has emerged from his pair of Andrew Garfield Spider-Man flicks in one piece—alive to tell the tale. Unfortunately, he should have held out for a better tale to tell.

Ever since Sony cut Marc Webb’s Spider-Man trilogy short, he’s silently focused on television producing (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, anyone?). Despite the time away, Gifted – his feature “comeback” of sorts – doesn’t flake any rust. It’s a return to heartfelt, human dramatics, more attuned to 500 Days Of Summer than spandex-clad photographers or a musical psycho romantic. Chris “Captain America” Evans may lead, but Webb’s only superhero is young Mckenna Grace whenever she’s outshining her adult cast. We’re talking Onata-Aprile-in-What-Maisie-Knew levels of childhood stardom, before the searing lights of Hollywood have blasted away pure, adolescent innocence. Go ahead and find me another 11-year-old who can outshine Octavia Spencer. I dare you.

It’s been over two years since director Marc Webb finished his four-year run of revamping The Amazing Spider-Man for Sony Pictures, and some may not be surprised he decided to return to smaller character-driven films like his directorial debut (500) Days of Summer.
Written by Tom Flynn, Gifted is a movie that’s bigger for its emotions than it is for the type of CG-driven action we saw in Webb’s Spider-Man movies, although it does star another superhero, Captain America’s Chris Evans, playing Frank, the uncle and guardian of a 7-year-old girl named Mary (Mckenna Grace). Frank has been home-schooling Mary in their Florida trailer park home, but when she’s finally sent to public school, her teacher (Jenny Slate) discovers the girl’s amazing math skills.

Marc Webb managed to make just one character-driven feature, the quirky rom-com “(500) Days of Summer,” before he turned his attentions to the studio world, with “Amazing Spider-Man” and its sequel. Webb’s foray into the superhero world yielded uneven results: While both films cracked over $700 million at the global box office and made an effective case for Andrew Garfield as the web-slinger, overall returns were not nearly as hefty as Sony had hoped (Webb’s “Amazing Spider-Man 2” is the lowest earner of the franchise) and critical reception was decidedly mixed.
Now Webb is back to his roots with “Gifted,” a good-hearted family drama that’s a bit like “Good Will Hunting” for the elementary school set — which is to say, solid and familiar, but not exactly a triumphant return to form.

After a couple bouts with The Amazing Spider-Man, director Marc Webb is returning to his romance-drama roots with Gifted, which has just received its first trailer. Also coming out of the superhero realm, Chris Evans stars as Frank, a single man raising his niece Mary (Mckenna Grace), a prodigy of sorts. Their world is thrown into turmoil when he gets into a custody battle with his mother (Lindsay Duncan). Helping him on his journey is Bonnie (Jenny Slate), one of Mary’s teachers who forms a connection with Frank through her concern for Mary.
Penned by Tom Flynn, who only has one feature script under his belt, the film seems to be shooting for heartfelt and heartbreaking, and it will be interesting to see if Webb can make Gifted a return to form. See the trailer below for the film that also stars Octavia Spencer.

Half the Internet was thirsty for this Jeopardy! contestant. The other half wondered why he acted like he was auditioning for the lead role in Zoolander 2 for the entire episode. Whichever side of the line you stand on, it's safe to say that everyone was super into Tom. Tom Flynn was on Monday night's Jeopardy! episode, and he was really, really ridiculously good-looking. As we noted in our feature 12 Indie Directors Who Jumped To Blockbuster Budgets, not every filmmaker who makes the leap has the kind of "Jurassic World" success that Colin Trevorrow experienced this summer. Marc Webb had a rough time with critics and audiences with two "The Amazing Spider-Man" films, ultimately failing to launch a new franchise for Sony. The filmmaker, who broke out with "(500) Days Of Summer," is going back to the studio that first put him on the map for a new project, while reviving a new one at another division.
