Jonathan Van Ness is bringing his podcast to Sony Music Entertainment.
Van Ness has struck an ad sales and distribution deal with Sony Music for Getting Curious With Jonathan Van Ness, the podcast he started hosting in 2015 prior to his breakout on Netflix’s Queer Eye. On the audio show, Van Ness explores a wide range of topics with academics, activists and other experts. (As a sampling of the show’s range, recent episodes have explored the death of the American mall, the social lives of apes and the power of AI.)
Getting Curious was previously a part of Earwolf, the Los Angeles–based comedy podcasting network that was acquired by SiriusXM in 2020. The podcast also inspired a TV series spinoff with Netflix that debuted last year with guests like figure skater Michelle Kwan and comedian Rachel Dratch.

Jews around the world are preparing for the first night of Passover on April 15, but in lieu of a seder, YouTube has staged a different kind of communal dinner. The latest YouTube Original is a new installment of Recipe For Change, a program that combines great food with meaningful conversations about identity, religion, and hate.
The first episode of Recipe For Change, which was also a YouTube Original, came out last year. That 55-minute video intercut three separate dinner parties, each of which featured several Asian-American luminaries. Participants included Eugene Lee Yang, Michelle Kwan, and Margaret Cho.
The upcoming Recipe For Change release will also feature a trio of dinners, and this time, the actors, comedians, chefs, and businesspeople on the invite list are all Jewish. As we can see in a trailer, the discussions will range widely and freely, but don't expect Recipe For Change to shy away from serious topics.

"I've always wanted to be a mom and, to me, she's a perfect miracle." The 41-year-old athlete reflected, "I had a hard time picturing what she might look like yet it seems like she's been in my life forever. This has been a challenging journey to motherhood (not to mention a very long labor!!!) and I'm glad I never gave...

Michelle Kwan can still feel the adrenaline rush of stepping out onto the ice at her first Olympic Games. At just 17, the figure skater brought home a silver medal for the U.S. at the 1998 Nagano Olympics. She'd go on to win five World Champion titles, nine U.S. Champion titles and a bronze medal at the 2002 Winter Games—all while triple lutz-ing her way into the heart of many Americans. With just weeks remaining until the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Michelle, now 40, empathizes with the immense pressure many competitors find themselves under at this moment. "I stress out even thinking about what the athletes are going through!" she told E! News during a recent chat. These...

YouTube has again turned to big-name entertainment personalities to anchor its latest slate of ad-supported originals.
At its Brandcast Delivered event for advertisers Tuesday, YouTube announced an unscripted series with Will Smith following his latest fitness journey and a new docuseries with Alicia Keys premiering this summer.
The video giant also announced the third and final season of comedy “Liza on Demand,” starring popular comedian and YouTube creator Liza Koshy — marking the last of YouTube’s scripted originals, after phasing them out starting in 2019; “Ice Cold,” a docuseries produced by hip-hop trio Migos exploring issues around racial inequity; and a new special celebrating Asian and Pacific Islander culture from executive producers including LeBron James and Michelle Kwan.
The YouTube Originals strategy remains the same: They’re projects built around personalities and top YouTube creators designed to draw a large audience, as well as specials to support specific causes, said YouTube chief business officer Robert Kyncl.

On Thursday, CAA kicked off the month of April with the CAA Amplify Town Hall to address the surge of violence against Asians and Asian Americans. These acts of violence and harassment have been at the forefront in the past week with the Atlanta shootings and the most most recent attack in New York City, where a man brutally beat 65-year-old Vilma Kari while saying racist remarks. The graphic attack can be seen in video footage — but what’s even worse is that the footage shows people witnessing the attack and not doing anything to help her.
The CAA Amplify Town Hall presented an opportunity for the Asian community in Hollywood and allies to speak about their experiences; to voice their concerns, and to offer some semblance of hope that could help bolster action. More importantly, it offered a platform for a community that has been silent for years to speak out.

At the top of the pandemic, when former reality show host Donald Trump referred to the coronavirus as the “China Virus” and “Kung Flu”, violence and harassment against Asians and Asian Americans started to surge. This all came to a head on March 16 when Xiaojie Tan, Daoyou Feng, Delaina Ashley Yaun Gonzalez, Paul Andre Michels, Soon Chung Park, Hyun Grant, Suncha Kim and Yong Ae Yue were senselessly murdered by a man who, according to authorities was “having a bad day” when it was clear as day that this was a hate crime.
Six of the victims were Asian and the violence against Asians and Asian Americans continues to plague this country — but it’s nothing new. From the horrible treatment of Chinese railroad workers to the Chinese Exclusion Act to Japanese internment camps during WWII to the rampage of a Filipino community during the Watsonville Riots to the fetishization...

Season 1 of “The Masked Dancer” came to a dramatic conclusion on Wednesday night’s finale, with three-time Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas being revealed as the Diamond Mask trophy winner, Cotton Candy. Despite competing against two professionally trained dancers in the finale, Gabby came out on top by incorporating a few tricks she knew the Sloth and Tulip couldn’t match — tumbling skills. Cotton Candy rocked and rolled her way through an inspirational routine to Kesha‘s version of “This is Me” and finished things off by flying through the air in a bouquet of balloons.
See Paula Abdul ends ‘The Masked Dancer’ as judge with most correct guesses — how’d she do it?

Olympic gold medalist gymnast Gabby Douglas is the first-ever winner of “The Masked Dancer,” having scored the show’s diamond mask trophy after being revealed as Cotton Candy.
Douglas was victorious despite facing off with two trained dancers in the finale. Runner-up Sloth turned out to be “Dancing with the Stars’” Maksim Chmerkovskiy. And in third place was Tulip, who was revealed to be Mackenzie Ziegler (“Dance Moms”).
Douglas was unmasked after dancing to “This Is Me,” by Kesha. The panelists were torn between whether the Cotton Candy was a gymnast or an ice skater. Paula Abdul figured out it was Gabby Douglas, while Ashley Tisdale named her teammate Simone Biles. Brian Austin Green thought it was Tara Lapinski, Ken Jeong named Michelle Kwan.

And then there were three. Fox’s “The Masked Dancer” wraps up its first season on Wednesday night with a battle royale between three finalists: Tulip, Sloth and Cotton Candy.
Variety has a first look at the two-hour episode, specifically the debate among panelists on whether Cotton Candy is an ice skater or a gymnast in real life. Here, Ken Jeong guesses that Cotton Candy could be Olympic figure skater medalist Michelle Kwan, while Brian Austin Green agrees with Jeong and says the skater he has in mind can do gymnast-like flips. Ashley Tisdale, however, disagrees: “You fell like someone who knows how to land,” she says, referring to a tumble the dancer took early in the season. Tisdale believes Cotton Candy could be either Simone Biles or Gabby Douglas, two Olympians who have been guessed in the past for the character.

A version of this story about Jonathan Van Ness first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
“Queer Eye” grooming guru Jonathan Van Ness has come a long way since Funny or Die introduced him in “Gay of Thrones,” a satirical take on the HBO fantasy hit that launched in 2013.
“I used to feel like I got a lot of no’s,” Van Ness told TheWrap. “‘Gay of Thrones’ was the only thing I ever really did. And I definitely had auditions for other hosting opportunities, but everyone was like, ‘I don’t get it,’ ‘No,’ ‘… (or) “Can you just come in and say ‘Where are my dragons?'” he recalls. “I think I used to feel like, will this be the only thing I do?”

U.S. figure skater Mirai Nagasu’s 2018 Winter Olympics include a bronze-medal win in the team event after a season’s-best skating performance, followed by two subsequent routines that left her far from the podium in her individual competition.
She attempted and succeeded at the tricky triple axel jump — becoming the first American woman ever to do so at the Games.
She tried it again in her individual skate and fell then scrapped a third attempt mid-skate.
In the middle of that up-and-down Olympic experience, Nagasu, 24, got a supportive message via Instagram from none other than Saturday Night Live actress Leslie Jones.

Twenty years ago, at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan, two American women battled for the gold medal spot in the ladies’ singles competition: Tara Lipinski and Michelle Kwan.
As we know now, Lipinski ended up with gold and Kwan the silver. In 2002, it was much of the same: American Sarah Hughes took gold while Kwan won bronze. At the World Championships, too, American women dominated: From 1996 to 2006, there were only three years where an American woman didn’t land the top spot, and even then, the United States still had one (or even two) women on the podium.
