Protest The strongly worded statement says the attitude of Amma is clear from their decision to bring back Dileep.Tnm StaffIn yet another strong move from the Women in Cinema Collective, 15 of its members have come out with a statement explaining why they had never become part of Amma (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists). The statement signed by 15 female actors including Amala Akkineni, Ranjini Pierre, Sajitha Madambil and Kani Kusruti, says they realised Amma as an organisation cannot be trusted from the way it approached the sexual assault on their colleague in February 2017. In a strongly worded statement shared on Wcc's Facebook page, the female actors cited eight reasons why they chose to abstain from the most powerful body of the Malayalam film industry. The reasons are as follows: 1. In an industry where there is not even a concept of equal pay, the act of imposing Rs 1 lakh as membership fee is neither pro people nor democratic. 2. The way Amma approached the issue of sexual assault of one of our colleagues, shows that their decisions cannot be trusted. 3. The silence that the organisation (Amma) generally maintains towards the founding members of Wcc, and the issues they raise, are precarious and irresponsible. There is no other option but to reject an organisation which is not capable of a healthy and ideological debate. 4. The attitude of the organisation towards women was clearly portrayed in the retrogressive skit which was presented in the recent celebration of Amma, and in their move to take back an actor accused in a case of sexual violence. 5. The history of the organisation; which has been scripted together by fans associations and star centered power coteries, has convinced us that there is no possibility of a democratic system paving way for a debate in the near future. 6. We also understand that star personalities who head the body are not capable of reconstructing it in a way which would incorporate women with self-esteem, and to respect their work place. 7. Other than using women as show pieces, the organisation has not attempted to ensure their participation in its responsibilities and decision making. 8. We firmly declare that we don’t want to be part of an organisation that is anti-human. "We are committed to open all the needed ways for the coming generation to create timely art which is beyond caste, religion, gender and factionalism through movies, a medium Malayalis immensely love," the statement further said. The statement has been issued by actors Abhija Sivakala, Amala Akkineni, Archana Padmini, Darsana Rajendran, Divya Gopinath, Divya Prabha, Jolly Chirayath, Kani Kusruti, Sajitha Madathil, Ranjini Pierre, Samyuktha Nambiar, Santhy Balachandran, Shylaja Ambu and Sujatha Jannnethri. The ultimate aim, the statement says, is to create a space to approach movies as a medium and an art with more care, respect and trust. CinemaThe film marks the Bollywood debut of Malayalam star Dulquer Salmaan and Marathi actor Mithila Palkar.Digital NativeThe makers of the Bollywood flick Karwaan had announced a couple of weeks ago that the film would make it to theatres on August 10. This had the fans of the lead stars excited as the movie went into the post-production mode. However, we now hear from sources in the know that the release date has been advanced by a week and it will hit the marquee on August 3. When enquired into what made the team decide on a new release date, it was revealed that the makers of Karwaan wanted it to have a solo run for two weeks before other films start hitting the theatres to cash in on the long Independence Day weekend. With a long line-up of films scheduled to release around the Independence Day week, it indeed seems to be a good strategy by the makers of Karwaan to release the film earlier. Karwaan is touted to be a comedy film that has Dulquer Salmaan and Irrfan Khan playing the leads with Kriti Kharbanda and Mithila Palkar featuring opposite them. Interestingly, it will mark Malayalam star Dulquer Salmaan and Marathi actor Mithila’s debut in Bollywood. Amala Akkineni will be seen in an important role in this flick. The film is directed by Akarsh Khurana and is bankrolled by Ronnie Screwvala. Anurag Saikia is the music composer for this flick while Avinash Arun has done the cinematography. Though Akarsh Khurana is wielding the megaphone for the first time, he has written films such as Hamshakals and Krrish 3. Dulquer has completed shooting for his portions in Karwaan and the film is currently in the post-production stage. Besides this Bollywood movie, the actor also has the Tamil movie Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal which is in the post-production mode. The romantic thriller is a Desingh Periyasamy directorial, which has Ritu Varma playing the lead opposite Dulquer. According to reports, Dulquer plays a happy-go-lucky youth in this film. KollywoodThe teaser reminds one of the Hollywood thriller 'Don't Breathe' but perhaps Karthik Subbaraj will surprise us.Tnm StaffYoutube screengrabThe teaser of director Karthik Subbaraj’s upcoming thriller Mercury was released on March 7 by actor Dhanush on Twitter. Very happy to release the teaser of Karthik Subbaraj’s #Mercury - A Silent Thriller starring ace dancer-actor-director Prabhudeva. A Silent Film after so many years! Congratulations to the whole team.https://t.co/uWhe9uM320 — Dhanush (@dhanushkraja) March 7, 2018 Touted to be a silent thriller, dancer-actor-director Prabhu Deva is seen playing the antagonist. The film also stars Sananth Reddy, Deepak Paramesh, Anish Padman, Shashank and Remya Nambeesan in lead roles. The trailer begins with a fallen sign board that reads, “Warning. No trespassing” with an abandoned building in the background. There’s also a memorial headstone that reads “In memory of 84 people who died in this town due to mercury poisoning - 1992”. With mysterious sounds in the background the symbol used to represent the first planet in the solar system - Mercury, takes up the screen. The line “When life is at war, the most powerful scream is silence” summarises the genre of the film - a silent thriller. Set on a hill station, complete with foggy visuals, the teaser has strong references to the Kodaikanal mercury poisoning incident. Although too early to tell, the film’s trailer bears resemblance to the 2016 Hollywood edge-of-the seat crime thriller, Don’t Breathe. The Hollywood film has a visually impaired antagonist who is extremely sensitive to sounds. After his debut film Pizza in 2012, Mercury will be director Karthik Subbaraj’s second thriller. The director gained a lot of appreciation for his previous thriller and hence, expectations for this film are high as well. Santosh Narayanan has composed music for the film and Tirru, who has worked in films like 24 and Krrrish 3, has been roped in to work on the film’s cinematography. Actor Prabhu Deva was last seen in Gulaebaghavali that released last year and has a number of films like Yung Mung Sung and Lakshmi, lined up for release. His last directorial Action Jackson released in 2014 in Hindi. The '80s film Pushpaka Vimana, starring Kamal Haasan and Amala Akkineni in lead roles, is among the few films which have had no dialogues at all. Towards the end of the Mercury teaser, we're told that this is a “no language” film releasing in all languages. The film will be out this April on Friday the 13th.

KollywoodWe cannot wait for April 27 already!Tnm StaffThe teaser for Rajinikanth's much awaited film Kaala may not have had the ideal release but fans will take anything that comes their way. The teaser was released at midnight on March 2, after a scene from the film was leaked. It opens with Nana Patekar saying, "Kaala, what sort of name is that?" Well, we All know what sort of name that is - one that belongs to the superstar and carries with it all the punch that's needed in the world. Nana's question is answered by a shot of Rajinikanth holding an umbrella in the rains. With some awesome shades and a white beard. This is followed by a voice-over (Samuthirakani?) explaining what Kaala means - black, the one who fights to protect. But is everyone happy with fights? Eswari Rao, who plays Rajini's wife in the film, is not impressed clearly! Like Kumudhavalli, who was Rajini's wife in his first film with Pa Ranjith, she appears to be an assertive woman. Nana and Rajini have something of a standoff, with the former dressed in the white and the latter in black. Nana's character says that he wishes to clean the world, while Kaala counters him by saying that black is the colour of the workers of the world. "Come to my chawl and see, all the dirt will look colourful to you," he shoots back. And then there's the punch line, mixing Hindi and Tamil, the superstar snaps his fingers and throws a challenge into the air, "Kya re? Setting ah? Vengaiyin mavan, I'm standing alone, come if you have the guts!" (no, the English translation doesn't do justice to the swag). The teaser rushes to the end with some goosebump-inducing music (by Santosh Narayan). And then Thalaivar says, "You haven't seen the full rowdyism of Karikaalan, right? You will see it!" The teaser also has Ambedkar's famous words for Dalit emancipation - Educate, Agitate. But does not have the third word, 'Organise'. Why so? We have over a month to debate! Phewww.
