Hallmark Channel has gone country. The network’s new rodeo-focused drama Ride is airing on Sunday nights. The show follows the McMurrays, a Colorado ranching family. They are fighting to hold on to their land while also moving forward after the shocking death of one of their own.
The Ride cast includes Nancy Travis as family matriarch Isabel McMurray, Tiera Skovbye as Isabel’s widowed daughter-in-law Missy, and Beau Mirchoff as her second son, Cash.

Austin (Marcus Rosner), the eldest McMurray son, is a big-time rodeo star, and Cash has always felt somewhat overshadowed by his older sibling. He joins the Marines to make his own way in the world, but in the Ride series premiere, he returns home to Colorado after having spent several years away.

At this moment, in the world of TV comedy, nobody is doing diversity better than ABC. "Fresh Off The Boat" is one of the best new comedies of the spring, maintaining its creative momentum from a strong pilot and generating a consistently solid audience in a time period that has caused ABC nothing but trouble in recent years. "Black-ish" was one of the fall's better new comedies and after the usual out-of-the-blocks maturation, it has become reliably smart and perceptive, doing a reasonably good job of holding onto that fickle "Modern Family" audience. I didn't have any use for "Cristela," but people I respect have been aggressively and demonstrably on-board for it since Day 1. ABC also has comedies celebrating families from The Heartland ("The Middle"), conservatives ("Last Man Standing"), secular Jews ("The Goldbergs"), intimacy-free gay marriage ("Modern Family") and wealthy snobs in the Hamptons ("Revenge"). As much as I've hated...

There are a number of good reasons why Shame is one of the buzziest films of this year’s Toronto festival. It’s a tale with the hooky subject of sex addiction. It’s the second feature directed by Steve McQueen, the British art world superstar-turned-filmmaker whose first film, Hunger (2008), was a powerfully explicit and intense drama about the 1981 Bobby Sands-led Irish prison hunger strike. And it stars Michael Fassbender, the rising star from Inglourious Basterds and X-Men: First Class, who only last week took home the Best Actor prize at the Venice Film Festival for his performance in...

“Downloading Nancy” is surely the feel-good movie of the year. If by “feel good” you mean depressing and sex-filled. Or at least, that’s the vibe you get from this long, 3-minute trailer for the movie. I believe this is a red band trailer, although someone put it on YouTube without that warning. The footage shows nudity from star Maria Bello and sex of the doggy style variety, and I’m guessing those are pretty much Red Band stuff. Sick of her life, housewife Nancy (Bello) just wants it to be over and done with, but rather than kill herself, she hires a stranger from the Internet to do the job for her. But fate takes a strange turn when she meets her killer (Patric) and the two fall in love. Of course, Nancy realizes that love and murder do not naturally go hand in hand. Starring Maria Bello as Nancy,...
