Worked as a miner at Silverwood Colliery near Rotherham, and was an amateur singer and stand-up comic in his spare time. Following an accident at the colliery in which he was injured, he turned professional in 1974.

First came to note as holiday camp host Ted Bovis in Hi-de-Hi! (1980), a part he went on to play for eight years.
