*full disclosure: an online screener was provided by the film's publicity arm. Director: Colin Minihan. Writers: Colin Minihan, Stuart Ortiz. Cast: Brittany Allen, Juan Riedinger, Merwin Mondesir It Stains the Sands Red is the latest thriller from the Vicious Brothers. Colin Minihan (Grave Encounters) and Stuart Ortiz try to breath some life into the zombie sub-genre, with this title. However, the long zombie chase in the desert gets a bit tiresome and repetitive, after awhile. The film's tone is overly sad. Meanwhile, there are almost no redeemable characters on-screen, outside of central character Molly (Brittany Allen). Even Molly has a long list of vices. A bit slow, It Stains the Sands Red offers minimal conflict and action, as well. It is not all bad. But, It Stains the Sands Red will entertain only the most patient zombie film fans. The film begins with one of the film's only wide shots.

These days, it seems like you can't flip on the TV without seeing one of the "reality" shows about paranormal investigations; what started out as a relatively underground hobby that very few people took seriously has blossomed into a full-scale cultural phenomenon.
From the cheesy, scripted introductions to the predictable "oh my god, what was that?!" shrieks after every innocent sound, these shows provide both entertainment and sources of eye-rolling for audiences everywhere. For my part, I do believe in the afterlife, but I also don't think that most spirits are hanging around waiting to ham it up the minute a TV crew arrives.
The movie Grave Encounters has a pretty neat premise, all things considered. It's the tried-and-true formula of found-footage film but set within the boundaries of one of these paranormal research cable shows.

Found footage movies have become very popular recently and are a dime a dozen. This is because they are inexpensive to produce and they can be big money makers. Even ones that don’t make a lot of money seem to turn a profit. The main problem with these found footage movies is that people always question the motives of the people in the movie. Why are they still carrying around the camera? Why don’t they just drop it and find their way out of what ever situation they’re in? The Vicious Brothers, the writing and directing team behind Grave Encounters, have found a way to answer this question, it’s just too bad the answer isn’t a very good one.

If you’ve seen Session 9, you know that indie horror movies about abandoned lunatic asylums can be pretty damn creepy. Today we got the trailer for Grave Encounters, another film in this sub-genre that could soon be doing the rounds. From what we’ve seen, it could be another screamer. Taking cues from films like Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project comes a new cinema verite ghost flick, Grave Encounters, which comes from directors simply known as "The Vicious Brothers". Starring Sean Rogerson, Merwin Mondesir, Ashleigh Gryzko, Mackenzie Gray and Juan Riedinge, the pic premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, here's what Johnn Marrone had to say: "The cinema verite horror pic is the latest in a tidal wave of mockumentary films that bites off so many of the "new wave" styles that unfortunately, as fun as it is at times, ends up feeling a bit more like a faded carbon copy of that which we have seen so often before." Directors: The Vicious Brothers Writers: The Vicious Brothers Starring: Sean Rogerson, Ashleigh Gryzko, Merwin Mondesir, Mackenzie Gray, Juan Riedinger The last thing this world needs now is another found footage horror film; but, nonetheless, writers-directors The Vicious Brothers (Colin Vicious and Stuart Vicious) have thrown their hat into the ring with Grave Encounters. The film starts as a reality television producer (Ben Wilkinson) tells us the story of the unaired footage of episode six from the ghost-hunting TV series Grave Encounters. The producer gets all choked up as he talks about the unearthed 76-hours of raw miniDV footage shot by the Grave Encounters crew. Thankfully, we do not have to watch all of the raw footage; someone has done us the courtesy of editing it down to a manageable, 85-minute or so "rough cut." And here we are, within the (presumably) raw footage, in front of Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital. This...

With the unceremonious canning of Roland Emmerich's The Zone, some speculated that the found-footage horror genre had had its day. At the very least though, we've still got Area 51, Apollo 18 and Paranormal Activity 3 on the way. And there's also Grave Encounters, the trailer for which has just gone online. The film shares its name with a fictional paranormal-investigating TV series: the reason that Sean Rogerson, Merwin Mondesir, Ashleigh Gryzko, Mackenzie Gray and Juan Riedinge are filming inside the Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital. Previously a Bedlam-like insane asylum, the institution is now suposed to be abandoned, but it seems that some of its former residents were reluctant to leave...Cue everything you'd expect, in grainy shaky-cam, as the crew remain determined to keep documenting what looks to be their final episode. Locals provide ominous interviews, windows open of their own accord, and there's even a seemingly deliberate nod to The Blair Witch Project's standing-in-the-corner ending,...
