Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key reunite onscreen by way of stop-motion avatars in Henry Selick’s “Wendell & Wild,” released seven years after their sketch comedy series concluded. “Get Out” Oscar winner Peele co-wrote the script and produces with director Selick.

A cross-section of the country’s emerging screen talent has received the endorsement of the Casting Guild of Australia (Cga) with the announcement of the guild’s annual Rising Stars.

Hosted by Nikki Glaser, the series follows three women, Nakia Renee, Cj Franco and Sarah Emig, who move to a tropical island where they’re joined by 24 men. Half of the men are “nice guys” also looking for a real relationship, while the others are self-proclaimed “f-boys” competing for a cash prize. By the finale, all will be revealed — who is a nice guy, who is an “f-boy” and who will the women ultimately choose. The series is a social experiment that asks the age-old question: can “f-boys” truly reform or do nice guys always finish last?

Rogers wrote and executive-produced the movie, which is directed by Tony winner Bartlett Sher. “Oslo” centers around a Norwegian couple who find themselves in the middle of negotiations for the 1993 Oslo Peace Accords, a pivotal agreement between the Government of Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (Plo).

There’s more to The Women’s Balcony than the American marketing machine has thus far presented. Billed as a feel good comedy of communal spirit — and correctly so — there are much weightier issues at play. This isn’t merely a farcical war between a synagogue’s female congregation and a new rabbi placing their demands behind his own. It’s also a keenly intuitive account of fundamentalist extremism in a forum we aren’t used to seeing. Too often Hollywood takes this concept and projects it upon terrorists killing in God’s name, but evidence of it also exists closer to home. No religion is immune to having its “rules” bent for specific purposes. Zealotry is cultivated only when the devout forget their humanity to seek God-like authority for themselves.

Pie Films and United King produced the story about female members of an Orthodox community who rally together after the collapse of the women’s balcony in a Jerusalem synagogue.

Menemsha Films brokered the deal with Pie Films and plans a theatrical release in the first quarter of 2017.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers will star in Damascus Cover.

The actor was announced for the Middle East spy thriller alongside a cast including Olivia Thirlby, John Hurt, Igal Naor and Navid Negahban.

Daniel Berk (Sometimes They Come Back... for More) will direct the film based on Howard Kaplan's 1977 novel.

The film is based on true events, and set in 1989 as the Berlin Wall falls.

It centres around a spy in Syria attempting to smuggle a chemical weapons scientist and his family out of the country.

"I'm enormously excited about this role," said Meyers.

"This was a hugely significant time in the conflict in the Middle East, post-Cold War and with the collapse of the Berlin Wall, when an amount of spies were redeployed to the Middle East, where the theatre of covert operations would now take precedence."

The actor will next be seen in Roland Emmerich's gay rights movie Stonewall.

Carnaby International to begin sales of Damacus Cover in Berlin this week as filming commences in Morocco.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers, star of The Tudors, has taken the lead role in Middle Eastern espionage thriller Damascus Cover.

The film, which begins production in Morocco this week, will also star Olivia Thirlby (Juno, Dredd), Sir John Hurt, Igal Naor (Green Zone), Jurgen Prochnow (The Da Vinci Code) and Navid Negahban (Homeland).

London-based Carnaby International will handle worldwide sales and will begin pre-sales negotiations at Berlin’s European Film Market (Efm) this week.

Deals have already been struck in several major territories and will be announced soon, according to a spokesman for the production.

The film, produced by UK-based Big Book Media, is based on the best-selling 1977 novel by Howard Kaplan.

Breaking new ground is certainly something to be admired. Being able to push the boundaries further is a rare feat that is inspiring to witness. The issue becomes what happens when that new ground becomes tired and worn? The inability to answer that quandary is a big reason squeals to visual spectacles rarely succeed. Their once flashy and new trend oversaturates the market to the point of ad nauseam.

With that issue in mind it is no wonder 300: Rise of an Empire does not work nearly as well as its predecessor. Director Noam Murro’s style is reminiscent to the original to a fault. It is akin to waiting eight years to make a sequel to The Matrix.

Wonder how many viewers would be interested in another version of the oft repeated history of ancient Greece? It's the story of how the Persian King Xerxes, with over 1,000 ships in his fleet, could have easily conquered the divided Greeks in Circa 480 BC.

Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel "Xerxes", the film takes off on a very verbose expository note by the Spartan Queen Gorgo. Her explanations weave in the loose ends as well as the backstory of the characters, giving an insight into the history.

The first question that would seem to apply when regarding any sequel is "Does this feel like it is of a piece with the first film?" It doesn't have to be the same movie to be a successful sequel, but it should do something interesting. It should either be a response to the first film or a deliberately different type of film or it should build on some interesting story thread or it should enhance our understanding of the world or the characters. By that standard, "300: Rise Of An Empire" is a worthy sequel to "300," stylistically consistent and equally loony, featuring what may well be the first truly can't-miss performance in a film this year. It would not shock me if, twenty years from now, people talk about this film the way they talk about "Poltergeist" now, simply accepting it as common knowledge that Zack Snyder "really" directed the film.
