In 2006, you could scarcely go a day without someone shouting, “This is Sparta!” in your face. The iconic line by Gerard Butler’s King Leonidas in Zack Snyder’s 300 became a battle cry for anyone looking to punt an irritant off a cliff. Out of sight. Out of mind. According to sources, a 300 TV series is developing at Warner Bros. TV. It’s early days for what Deadline says could be a prequel to the 2006 film, and fans are already theorizing about the plot, which is unknown. While deals are not in place, we hear Zack and Deborah Snyder could reunite with Gianni Nunnari, Mark Canton, Bernie Goldmann, and Wesley Coller of Stone Quarry for the newly announced project.
Zack Snyder directed and co-wrote 300 with Kurt Johnstad and Michael B. Gordon. That’s Gordon, not Jordan. Based on the 1998 comic book series by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley,...

New Amazon Prime Video series “Los Farad,” released Dec. 12, takes a look at the Cold War from one of its strangest geo-political hubs, 1980s Málaga. The action-packed show follows a family that is normal in many ways, despite earning a luxurious living as arms traffickers.
Part of a determinedly diverse and burgeoning lineup at Spain’s Prime Video, “Los Farad” is a high-profile prestige package starring Miguel Herrán – who plays Rio in “Money Heist” and Cristián in “Elite” – and the on-the-rise Susana Abaitúa, who delivered a tearaway performance in Netflix rom-com “Crazy About Her.”
Co-created by Alejandro Aménabar co-scribe Alejandro Hernández, “Los Farad” is directed by Mariano Barroso in his fifth collaboration with Hernández.
Emerging as one of Spain’s most notable drama series directors in an age of premium fiction, Barroso has extracted terrific, nuanced performances in series set in Spain’s recent past, such as “The Invisible Line” and “What the Future Holds.

Henry Selick, the man who gave us The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, and Coraline, is finally back in action. Selick has teamed up with Jordan Peele to bring us Wendell and Wild, a new stop-motion animated tale that will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for Wendell and Wild, which is jam-packed with spooky, fantasy goodness.
Wendell and Wild follows two scheming demon brothers (voiced by Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key) who enlist the aid of 13-year-old Kat Elliot (Lyric Ross) to summon them into the Land of the Living. I can’t believe it’s been over a decade since the release of Coraline, so the return of Henry Selick is very welcome indeed.

Perhaps it’s time for another meeting between officials from Israel and Palestine like the series of off-the-books negotiations that took place in Oslo, Norway, back in 1993. Those sessions — conducted in secret over nearly six months, since Israeli policy forbade interacting with or otherwise acknowledging the authority of the Palestinian Liberation Organization — paid off in a very public handshake between Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Plo leader Yasser Arafat, photographed with then-u.S. President Bill Clinton.
But the U.S. had little to do with the Oslo Accords, as J.T. Rogers’ Tony-winning play “Oslo” reminded audiences when it premiered at New York’s Lincoln Center Theater in 2016. The discussions were brokered by a nonpartisan Norwegian couple, which provides a uniquely neutral framing device for an in-depth look at the issues concerning both sides. Now, as a recent outbreak of violence in the region reminds how precarious any peace agreement has been,...

"Our countries live in the past... Both obsessing over what we have lost... Let us find a way to live in the present. HBO has debuted the full-length trailer for a riveting movie titled Oslo, based on the Tony award-winning play by J. T. Rogers which opened on Broadway in 2017. We posted the teaser trailer a few weeks back, and this full trailer is even more intriguing. An emotional, eye-opening look at this historic meeting. Oslo recounts the true-life, previously secret, back-channel negotiations in the development of the pivotal 1990s Oslo Peace Accords between Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organization. "In the face of conflict, they sought peace. Based on the remarkable true story of the 1993 Oslo Peace Accords." The film stars Ruth Wilso as Mona Juul, Andrew Scott as Terje Rød-Larsen, and cast including Jeff Wilbusch, Salim Dau, Waleed Zuaiter, Igal Naor, Doval'e Glickman, Rotem Keinan, and Itzik Cohen.

I've got a slick trailer here for a new upcoming spy thriller called Damascus Cover, which stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers. It looks like a decent, well-made film with a story that will have plenty of twists and turns and nefarious characters..
Ari Ben-Sion (Meyers), haunted by the death of his son, is assigned by the Mossad to smuggle a chemical weapons scientist out of Syria. Within days his mission goes wrong. To survive Ari reaches out to a deep cover agent code named, The Angel. He soon discovers that he is a pawn in a much bigger plan.
I'll give the film a shot because I enjoy watching spy thrillers. The cast also includes Olivia Thirlby, John Hurt, Navid Negahban, Tsahi Halevi, Jürgen Prochnow, Igal Naor and Wolf Kahler.
The movie was helmed by Daniel Zelik Berk, who is a producer making his feature directorial debut. The movie will be...

This looks like a fairly typical spy romance mystery thriller, with some big twists and nefarious characters. I'm curious, but not completely sold on it yet. Take a look below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Daniel Zelik Berk's Damascus Cover, direct from YouTube: Ari Ben-Sion (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), haunted by the death of his son,...

There’s more to The Women’s Balcony than the American marketing machine has thus far presented. Billed as a feel good comedy of communal spirit — and correctly so — there are much weightier issues at play. This isn’t merely a farcical war between a synagogue’s female congregation and a new rabbi placing their demands behind his own. It’s also a keenly intuitive account of fundamentalist extremism in a forum we aren’t used to seeing. Too often Hollywood takes this concept and projects it upon terrorists killing in God’s name, but evidence of it also exists closer to home. No religion is immune to having its “rules” bent for specific purposes. Zealotry is cultivated only when the devout forget their humanity to seek God-like authority for themselves.

Terry George‘s The Promise begins with a title card that appears on-screen stating that 1.5 million Armenians were killed by the Turkish government during World War I. It’s a tragedy that has been depicted before in film, perhaps most notably in Atom Egoyan’s underwhelming Ararat, with ample room still made available to deliver the definitive version. Despite formidable talent on both sides of the camera, unfortunately we’ll have to wait longer for such a drama to arrive.
The film takes place on the brink of World War I in Turkey. Michael (Oscar Isaac), an intelligent, compassionate Armenian, decides to settle down and marry a girl (Angela Sarafyan) that he’s not completely smitten by, but claims that with time he will indeed love her. He lives in Armenia, but opts to journey to Turkey, without his wife, to study medicine at the Imperial Medical School and become...

Jonathan Rhys Meyers will star in Damascus Cover.
The actor was announced for the Middle East spy thriller alongside a cast including Olivia Thirlby, John Hurt, Igal Naor and Navid Negahban.
Daniel Berk (Sometimes They Come Back... for More) will direct the film based on Howard Kaplan's 1977 novel.
The film is based on true events, and set in 1989 as the Berlin Wall falls.
It centres around a spy in Syria attempting to smuggle a chemical weapons scientist and his family out of the country.
"I'm enormously excited about this role," said Meyers.
"This was a hugely significant time in the conflict in the Middle East, post-Cold War and with the collapse of the Berlin Wall, when an amount of spies were redeployed to the Middle East, where the theatre of covert operations would now take precedence."
The actor will next be seen in Roland Emmerich's gay rights movie Stonewall.

Breaking new ground is certainly something to be admired. Being able to push the boundaries further is a rare feat that is inspiring to witness. The issue becomes what happens when that new ground becomes tired and worn? The inability to answer that quandary is a big reason squeals to visual spectacles rarely succeed. Their once flashy and new trend oversaturates the market to the point of ad nauseam.
With that issue in mind it is no wonder 300: Rise of an Empire does not work nearly as well as its predecessor. Director Noam Murro’s style is reminiscent to the original to a fault. It is akin to waiting eight years to make a sequel to The Matrix.

Rise of an Empire is a fine sequel to 300, but People's critic says you should check into The Grand Budapest Hotel instead. Here's what to see and what to skip in theaters this weekend. See thisThe Grand Budapest HotelWhimsy gets such a crappy rap. Granted, too many directors use it poorly, spraying their sketchily plotted, inartfully written films with cinematic chintz. But Wes Anderson is of an entirely different vintage. He uses massive amounts of whimsy - more than just about anyone else - but the difference is that he knows just how. Take The Grand Budapest Hotel, for instance.

Wonder how many viewers would be interested in another version of the oft repeated history of ancient Greece? It's the story of how the Persian King Xerxes, with over 1,000 ships in his fleet, could have easily conquered the divided Greeks in Circa 480 BC.
Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel "Xerxes", the film takes off on a very verbose expository note by the Spartan Queen Gorgo. Her explanations weave in the loose ends as well as the backstory of the characters, giving an insight into the history.

The first question that would seem to apply when regarding any sequel is "Does this feel like it is of a piece with the first film?" It doesn't have to be the same movie to be a successful sequel, but it should do something interesting. It should either be a response to the first film or a deliberately different type of film or it should build on some interesting story thread or it should enhance our understanding of the world or the characters. By that standard, "300: Rise Of An Empire" is a worthy sequel to "300," stylistically consistent and equally loony, featuring what may well be the first truly can't-miss performance in a film this year. It would not shock me if, twenty years from now, people talk about this film the way they talk about "Poltergeist" now, simply accepting it as common knowledge that Zack Snyder "really" directed the film.
