He was the father of the most famous film critic in the UK, Barry Norman, who hosted the BBC's Film '72 (1971) series for over 20 years. His daughter was Valerie E. Norman, a script supervisor turned director.
In his later years, he was a victim of throat cancer and (like his friend Jack Hawkins) had his larynx removed by surgery, making it difficult for him to speak.
