David Adjmi’s Stereophonic was named Best Play of the year by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle today, with the Best Musical Award going to the Off Broadway production of Dead Outlaw from the team behind The Band’s Visit.
Stereophonic, currently on Broadway, has received 13 Tony Award nominations, and includes songs written by Will Butler from the indie rock band Arcade Fire. The play tells the story of a fractious 1970s Fleetwood Mac-like rock band recording what will be a massive Rumours-like hit record.
Dead Outlaw, with music and lyrics by David Yazbek and Erik Della Penna and a book by Itamar Moses, is inspired by the life of Elmer McCurdy. The musical, which premiered this year at the Minetta Lane Theatre, was originally conceived by Yazbek and tells the story of an outlaw from the early 20th Century whose corpse became a traveling sideshow exhibit for decades.

Nominations for the 39th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards were announced today by Amber Iman and George Abud, two stars of Broadway’s “Lempicka.” The Lortels honor outstanding achievement in Off-Broadway theater. The 2024 ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 5 at NYU Skirball Center. The Lucille Lortel Awards are produced by the Off-Broadway League and Lucille Lortel Theatre, with additional support provided by Tdf.
It’s common for productions to begin their life Off-Broadway before transferring to the Main Stem, so many of this year’s Tony Awards hopefuls are among the list of Lortel nominations. Chief among these contenders is “Hell’s Kitchen,” the semi-autobiographical musical from Alicia Keys. That tuner garnered five Lortel nominations. These include Best Musical, Best Choreography for Camille A. Brown, a Lead Performer bid for Maleah Joi Moon, and Featured Performer bids for Shoshana Bean and Kecia Lewis. All performance categories at the Lortel Awards are gender neutral.

“The Crown” is gearing up for its last hurrah at the SAG Awards, an organization that has bestowed a number of prizes onto the Netflix regal show over the years. It claimed the highly coveted TV drama ensemble prize twice (2019 and ’20), while individual winners through the years were Claire Foy (2016 and ’17), John Lithgow (2016) and Gillian Anderson (2020). Now the sixth and final season is hoping to prevail for a third time, which would tie it with “Downton Abbey” in this category at three total wins.
Season 6 faces off in the TV drama ensemble race against fellow nominees “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show” and “Succession.” Elizabeth Debicki is “The Crown’s” only solo acting nominee this year, with her co-nominees in the TV drama actress category being Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”).

This year’s SAG Awards nominations for drama ensemble run the gamut in terms of total cast members nominated. You have “The Gilded Age” on one side with a jaw-dropping 34 people represented. And then you have “The Last of Us” on the other side with just two — hi, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey! HBO’s zombie apocalypse series has now tied the Screen Actors Guild record with “Key and Peele,” which was the first TV show to nab an ensemble citation with just two stars: Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
The “Key and Peele” funny duo lost to “Orange Is the New Black” for comedy ensemble in 2016, which had a whopping 34 cast members nominated that year. Might SAG Awards history repeat itself? “The Last of Us” competes this year against “The Gilded Age” (34 cast members), “Succession” (18), “The Crown” (15) and “The Morning Show...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 2 Episode 6, “Warning Shots.”] Morgan Spector‘s George Russell saw the climax of the workers’ strike in The Gilded Age Season 2’s sixth episode. Tensions reached a tipping point when Henderson (Darren Goldstein), the union’s leader, and his men faced being shot and killed as they tried to prevent scabs from crossing their picket line. At the very last moment, George stopped the police from carrying out any bloodshed — a move that left his right-hand man, Richard Clay (Patrick Page), seething. Spector tells TV Insider that while the union has won this battle, there will be more to this war in a potential third season. And George’s humane decision in Episode 6 may cause an irreparable rift between him and Richard, similar to a real-life robber baron and his No. 2 from the same era. “Obviously these [union] issues aren’t going anywhere, but I would expect we would probably ...

For a series stuffed to the gills with Tony Award-winning actors, it makes perfect sense that the second season of “The Gilded Age” would find its ensemble embroiled in a plot over dueling opera houses. As Carrie Coon’s social climber Bertha Russell says at the beginning of the new trailer, “I intend to bring the great city of New York the opera house it deserves.” That development puts her at odds once again with the moneyed old guard of the city, played by Christine Baranski and Donna Murphy. "It's at the top of my list of lost films that I would, without conscience, kill to see." Wolfe Video has revealed a new official US trailer for an indie comedy film titled The Sixth Reel, from filmmakers Carl Andress & Charles Busch. This indie screwball comedy caper from NYC originally premiered in 2021 but hasn't been released until now - available to watch this fall. A down-on-his-luck movie memorabilia collector discovers a legendary lost film and becomes entangled in an outrageous adventure to deliver it to the right hands before it is lost forever. The film is co-written and co-directed by drag legend Charles Busch and the acclaimed American director Carl Andress. The Sixth Reel stars Charles Busch, Julie Halston, André De Shields, and Patrick Page, with Tim Daly and Margaret Cho. This looks a bit too low budget and a bit too kooky for my tastes, but also seems like...

It's over and done, but aren't you glad it happened?
On Schmigadoon! Season 2 Episode 6, Josh and Melissa get their Finale Ultimo, which turns out to be a "Happy Beginning."
The singular sensation Ariana DeBose is back, opening up the episode with a fabulous tribute to 1981's R&b musical Dreamgirls.
DeBose hasn't been featured as prominently in Schmigadoon! Season 2 as she was in Schmigadoon! Season 1, likely due to her career taking off after her Oscar win -- but this is a beautiful way to showcase her doing what she does best.
DeBose delivers dramatic, dynamic vocals with elegance and glamor. The number sets the tone for the rest of the episode perfectly.
Once again, Cecily Strong proves what a marvelous actor she is. We know there will be a happy end, but her commitment to the proceedings is admirable. Patrick Page's Kratt somehow remains both dapper and dastardly. His evil knows no bounds!

If Season 1 of “Schmigadoon!” needed to nail the candy-colored vibes of an MGM musical, Season 2 does the same dance — but backwards and in heels and probably stockings with a run or two. The second season of the Apple TV+ series set an equally ambitious production task for itself by turning to the messier, sharp-elbowed, darkly funny musicals of the ’70s.
The cast had to contend with the compositional whiplash of Kander and Ebb and Sondheim (to say nothing of Aaron Tveit’s hippie commune). But production designer Jamie Walker McCall’s brief was to create a musical version of Chicago – canonically, a Schmicago – that would look as grimy and gross as a Kristin Chenoweth-run orphanage that also still reflected the fun and theatricality of the series. As McCall conceptualized the show’s Schmicago, she looked beyond the “Cabaret,” “Chicago,” and “Sweeney Todd” references embedded in the script to something more surprising: “Mary Poppins.

"Schmigadoon," Apple TV+'s musical series that parodies iconic stage productions of the past, is back for season two - but don't expect the Golden Age musical numbers from season one. Season two - which the show renames "Schmicago" - turns its attention to the darker and sexier musicals of the 1960s and 1970s. Those productions - like the reference for the new title, "Chicago" - feature sex, murder, trauma, and war, and often don't end happily. In the series, Melissa (Cecily Strong) warns Josh (Keegan-Michael Key) that she's not as familiar with the shows of this era, so if that's you, too, we've got you covered. These are the biggest musical references for "Schmigadoon" season 2, aka "Schmicago."

“You can never return to Schmigadoon,” rasps Tituss Burgess in a new “Schmigadoon!” Season 2 trailer. “Welcome to Schmicago!” The new “first look” trailer from Apple TV+ then drops viewers into a darker, sexier musical pastiche than the candy-coated first season. Watch the full video above and then read on to dive into the smorgasbord of Broadway references hidden in this exciting sneak peek.
“As the high of Schmigadoon starts to wear off, the realities of life start to set in,” reveals Cecily Strong during a behind-the-scenes interview. It seems that the spark of romance her character Melissa experienced with Josh (Keegan-Michael Key) has begun to dissipate after leaving the world of Golden Age musicals. Josh has the idea to return to Schmigadoon in order to reignite their romance and sense of fun, but the couple is instead transported to a town inspired by musicals from the 1960s and 70s.
