The longevity of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" has been fascinating to behold. Beginning on Minnesota public access television in 1988, Joel Hodgson's watch-bad-movies-with-sarcastic-buddies cult TV series has deeply entrenched itself into the collected Jungian lore of every Gen-Xer worth their weight in flannel. For much of its life, "MST3K" lived either on Ktma in Minneapolis or, when it became more successful, running at midnight on Comedy Central.
Throughout, the show famously included the phrase "Keep circulating the tapes" in its credits. That was an acknowledgement from the show's producers that world-of-mouth and shared VHS recordings of "MST3K" were responsible for its modest cultural foothold. Fans would call friends, mail them cassettes, and implore that the cult grow. In 2008, when "MST3K" was finally made widely available through DVD box sets, Dr. Forrester/Crow T. Robot actor Trace Beaulieu said in an Av Club interview to "Keep circulating some of the tapes.

“Mystery Science Theater 3000” is returning for a 13th season, this time on a new indie streaming platform, Gizmoplex.
Created by Joel Hodgson in 1988, the cult show “MST3K” follows a series of ordinary humans captured by mad scientists who subject them to a series of terrible B-movies. To keep their sanity, the humans create a series of companion robots to riff on the films they watch, which are presented on the show in their entirety. “MST3K” has gone through several iterations, initially airing on Ktma-tv Minneapolis, then on Comedy Central and the Sci-Fi channel, for a total of 10 seasons. It was revived for a two season run on Netflix in 2017. The show has been highly acclaimed since its creation, winning a Peabody in 1993, and has helped turn seberal obscure movies into cult classics, such as “Manos: The Hands of Fate.”

"Mystery Science Theater 3000" officially ended its run in 1999, but never really went away.
The "watching bad movies with several funny friends" premise was simply too good to leave behind, and every cast member on the show participated in "MST3K"-like projects for years thereafter. The show's creator, Joel Hodgson, teamed up with Mary Jo Pehl, Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff, and J. Elvis Weinstein to create "Cinematic Titanic," a riffing show wherein the cast was seen in silhouette, like on "MST3K," and were beholden to an evil, ill-defined corporate entity. Meanwhile, Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy formed "The Film Crew" wherein the...

“Mystery Science Theater 3000” is coming back strong.
The beloved cult series will be back with more original episodes and a custom online distribution platform thanks to another successful Kickstarter campaign. The campaign, which concluded May 7 after 30 days, raised over $6.5 million with over 36,000 backers.
Series creator Joel Hodgson will use the money to fund 13 new episodes, including the show’s first 3-D episode, 12 new short film riffs, a holiday special that will feature Hodgson, Jonah Ray and Emily Marsh as co-hosts, and to build The Gizmoplex, new virtual theater and online community hub that will be the exclusive home of the next season for its initial run.
Each new episode will be released one at a time as they are ready for release, rather than holding them until the entire season is complete. The Gizmoplex is also expected to host live episode premieres, watch parties, and special events. The most...

In the not too distant past — November 24th, 1988, A.D. — a moderately successful stand-up comedian named Joel Hodgson slipped on a jumpsuit. He then spent a few hours on a Minneapolis Uhf station making fun of the terrible movies Invaders from the Deep and Revenge of the Mysterions from Mars, alongside a couple of handmade robot puppets. Only a handful of lucky Minnesotans were watching Ktma that Thanksgiving night, exactly 30 years ago. They all saw the birth of a pop culture phenomenon: a charmingly cheap-looking show that, no joke, changed television.

The big announcement was made at San Diego Comic-Con yesterday - Netflix will be streaming the Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt-led Mystery Science Theater 3000 revival. Creator Joel Hodgson launched a Kickstarter campaign back in 2015 which eventually gained over $5.7 million in funding from fans (just beating the previous record by the Veronica Mars film). Pretty quickly they rounded up a cast which included Day as Kinga, Oswalt as TV's Son of TV's Frank, Hampton Yount as Crow T. Robot, Baron Vaughn as Tom Servo, and Jonah Ray as host. Hodgson followed up the Netflix announcement on his Twitter by adding that Kevin Murphy, Mary Jo Pehl, and Bill Corbett would also be appearing as themselves in the next MST3K and that he would also have a cameo. "Elliott Kalan, the Emmy-winning former head writer of The Daily Show, will serve as the head writer on MST3K," reports The Hollywood Reporter,...

2016-07-24T12:06:19-07:00New 'Mystery Science Theater' Coming to Netflix
Netflix announced this weekend that it will air a revival of the comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000. The announcement was greeted happily by most fans, but it caused mixed emotions in some who see the series' deal with Netflix as unnecessary after a recent Kickstarter campaign had already provided funding for a revival of the show.
No details were available about Netflix's version of the series, but series creator Joel Hodgson had already raised $5.7 million in a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund a 14-episode revival season. The new incarnation of the show is set to star Patton Oswalt, Felicia Day and Jonah Ray, along with original cast members Mary Jo Pehl, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy. Hodgson will produce and write the series, with help from Community's Dan Harmon and Joel McHale.

In December, after the movie-mocking cult TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000 raised an astounding $5.7 million in a Kickstarter campaign to produce new episodes, creator Joel Hodgson told Rolling Stone he hoped to have some news regarding the revival in time for Comic-Con. On Saturday at the San Diego event, Netflix announced that the 14 new episodes of MST3K would head to the streaming service "in the not-too-distant future."
Hodgson is back on board overseeing all facts of the revival, with comedian Jonah Ray and actress Felicia Day also cast in the series.

New episodes of”Mystery Science Theater 3000,” in which a captive man and his robot friends offer live commentary on amusingly bad B movies, will head to the streaming service in the “not too distant future,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. The cult classic movie riff comedy show Mystery Science Theater 3000 celebrates its 25th anniversary with a special MST3K: 25th Anniversary Edition DVD from Shout! Factory, and creator Joel Hodgson tells ETonline that much of the show's recipe for comic success had to do with the unexpected.

You're just kind of strapped in, and you've got to go watch this movie, and that's an unusual exercise in today's world. … You just don't watch movies you don't know anything about [these days]. Like MST3K, the show was created by Joel Hodgson and features the same team that first brought the Peabody award winning cult-classic series to life: Trace Beaulieu (Crow, Dr. Forrester), J. Elvis Weinstein (Tom Servo, Dr. Erhardt), Frank Conniff (TV’s Frank), and Mary Jo Pehl (Pearl Forrester), Cinematic Titanic continues the tradition of riffing on ‘the unfathomable’, ‘the horribly great’, and the just plain ‘cheesy’ movies from the past.
Three years ago when Cinematic Titanic came to the St. Louis area.s St. Charles Family Arena, they riffed on the deliciously riffable 1964 gem Santa Claus Conquers The Martians. The next year they chose a 1968 Kaiju I was unfamiliar with called War Of The Insects (aka Genocide) but...

Mystery Science Theatre 3000: The Movie
Stars: Michael J. Nelson, Trace Beaulieu, Kevin Murphy, Jim Mallon, John Brady | Written by Michael J. Nelson, Trace Beaulieu, Jim Mallon, Kevin Murphy, Mary Jo Pehl, Paul Chaplin, Bridget Jones | Directed by Jim Mallon
Distributors Mediumrare Entertainment are becoming synonymous here in the UK with quality cult releases and that’s not going to change with the release on Mystery Science Theatre 3000: The Movie. Making it’s Blu-ray debut – in fact, I think this might be it’s UK debut full stop, the film is somewhat of an acquired taste. Set between seasons 6 and 7 of the series (only season 8 has been broadcast here in the UK), the official plot goes something a little like this: “Mad scientist, Dr Clayton Forrester has concocted a diabolical scheme for world domination, to subject the human race to the worst movies ever made. This time it’s...

Pahrump - Call it Hof Vegas. Dennis Hof of HBO’s Cathouse no longer wants me to warn readers that his Bunny Ranch empire is in only Reno and not Las Vegas. He’s bringing his style of adult fun to the outskirts of Sin City. He called up the hotline from the middle of Crystal, Nevada to spread the news. The sounds of hammering and drills came from his end of the phone.
“We’re moving around here and getting some things done,” Dennis Hof said. “I bought two 35 year old rundown, rat trap brothels. What you’re buying is the licenses.”
The two old names were Cherry Patch Ranch and Mabel’s Whore House. The new places are Love Ranch and Dennis Hof’s Cathouse. “Those are name that are synonymous with good times.”
There are no good times for the former owner. He got arrested for bribing a county official.

This week, Shout! Factory releases Mystery Science Theater 3000 Vol. Xix (yes, that's 19), featuring four more classic episodes from the show that made it Ok to talk back to the screen: Devil Doll, Devil Fish, Ed Wood's Bride of the Monster, and Phil Tucker's infamous Robot Monster. A writer for most of the show's run, Mary Jo Pehl (who played the evil Mrs. Forrester during the SyFy run of MST3K), sat down to talk about her history with the cult cable classic as well as her current movie-riffing project Cinematic Titanic, which teams her with MST3K creator Joel Hodgson and fellow show vets Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff, and J. Elvis Weinstein on live shows and DVD releases.

Many have asked to know exactly what panels I’ll be guesting on and MCing this coming weekend (September 3-6) during Atlanta’s supermegamassivegeekorama DragonCon.
Below, you’ll find a list of the panels, the official DragonCon descriptions of said panels, and my commentary on what actually may or may not be happening.
Please Note: I will not only have copies of my children’s book There’S A Zombie In My Treehouse with me and available for sale, but I will also have a handful of Super-rare CDs with a “fan”-chosen selection of Crapoke tracks. Once they’re gone, they’re gone. All you have to do is have cash on hand, come up to me, and say, “Hey Ken. Where’s that CD of Crapoke? I’d like to buy one.” And with those magic words, A CD Shall Appear, we shall exchange your cash for it,...

"Are you ready to watch a really s--ty movie?" So asked Joel Hodgson, creator and original host of Mystery Science Theater 3000, before a packed Saturday-night house at New York City's Nokia Theatre. The occasion: a live performance of Cinematic Titanic, his MST3K follow-up project with fellow castaways from the Satellite of Love. Primed after a decade of Mst deprivation, the 2,100-strong crowd roared its assent. Before Hodgson came on stage to announce the celluloid craptacular du jour, the night's proceedings kicked off with Mary Jo Pehl, f.k.a. Pearl Forrester, who introduced Ct's guest Mc, David "Gruber" Allen.

Take one barely skilled Chinese martial artist. Add a beefy hunk of traditional blaxploitation, and top off with a complete selection of Asian actors who played bad guys on M*A*S*H. Stir rigorously.
Bake for two hours under the high heat of Mystery Science Theater 3000-inspired quips, and you end up with the new live DVD from Cinematic Titanic, "East Meats Watts."
This latest release from MST3K veterans Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu, Josh Weinstein, Mary Jo Pehl and Frank Conniff features a clunky 70's mess on celluloid mocked before an affectionate live audience. While Cinematic Titanic's earlier DVD releases all pack more than the U.N.-mandated share of laughs, the energy provided by the comics' interactions with the crowd make this the comic troupe's most successful DVD release so far.
