Out of these, Sunny Deol won for Best Actor in GHAYAL(1990) and Best Supporting Actor in DAMINI(1993), Bobby Deol and Twinkle Khanna won the Best Male and Best Female Debutantes respectively for BARSAAT(1995), Amrish Puri won for Best Supporting Actor in GHATAK(1996) and Ajay Devgan was bestowed with the Critics Award For Best Actor in THE LEGEND OF BHAGAT SINGH(2002). Santoshi also directed Deol to win the National Film Award for Best Actor in GHAYAL and Best Supporting Actor in DAMINI as well as Anil Kapoor and Ajay Devgan for Best Actor in PUKAAR(2000) and THE LEGEND OF BHAGAT SINGH respectively.

Though all of his 3 collaborations with actor Sunny Deol resulted in massive critical and commercial successes, Santoshi had a major fallout with Deol when the latter insisted on Santoshi casting Bobby Deol as the titular real life independence activist in THE LEGEND OF BHAGAT SINGH(2002) while Santoshi had already set his mind on Ajay Devgan. As a result, Deol parted ways with Santoshi and Anil Kapoor got the lead role in Santoshi's military action drama PUKAAR(2000), winning Kapoor the National Film Award for Best Actor.

Of the 14 Bollywood films he has directed till date, only FAMILY:TIES OF BLOOD(2006), HALLA BOL(2008) and PHATA POSTER NIKLA HERO(2013) have failed to secure a single Filmfare nomination in either technical or acting categories.

Amongst the 4 Khans of Bollywood, Shahrukh and Saif Ali Khan remain the only ones to have never worked with Santoshi. They are also the only A-list stars, alongside Hrithik Roshan, to have never been approached for any of his directorials ever since the beginning of his career as a full fledged independent filmmaker in 1990. Else, Sanjay Dutt and Mithun Chakraborty were considered to play the iconic role of Ajay Mehra in GHAYAL(1990).
