There’s a popular idiom often attributed to Picasso about how good artists copy and great artists steal. Naturally, this isn’t referring to plagiarism, but rather the idea that it’s better for an artist to reproduce something directly from the source instead of simply regurgitating it as-is. The way I see it, this sentiment also applies to creative rip-offs, as I’ll take an unlicensed cash-grab over endless sequels any day of the week.
After all, this is how we got beloved franchises like Friday the 13th (the original film was an attempt at capitalizing on the success of Halloween) and even Star Wars (A New Hope was meant to be a cheap Flash Gordon knock-off). And in honor of all the rip-offs that continue to feed the ouroboros that is popular culture, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six spooky Mockbusters that are actually worth your time.

For a horror fan, the month of October is naturally designated for everything related to Halloween. So this month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies that take place on or around October 31st. As usual, though, these selections can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s Halloween-themed offerings include zombies, witchcraft, killers, and more.
The Midnight Hour (1985)
Image: The Midnight Club (1985)
Directed by Jack Bender.
The Midnight Hour is a great warm-up for the Halloween season, right before diving into heavier or scarier movies. This telefilm originally aired on ABC, then later showed up on cable. While it didn’t open to rave reviews, it has certainly found an audience over the years. The plot is simple enough: teens fool around with magic and accidentally raise an evil sorceress on Halloween. As the night goes on, the town is taken over by ghouls and monsters.

Executive producer Ed Seaman and Mvd Entertainment Group have acquired punk rocker Gg Allin’s life and music rights, with Jonas Åkerlund attached to the direct the biopic film, titled “Gg Allin: Live. Fast. Die.”
Angry Films’ Don Murphy and Susan MonEord will produce along with Eric D. Wilkinson from a screenplay by Richard Schenkman.
Known as rock ‘n roll’s “outlaw scumfuc,” Gg Allin’s live shows were legendary for his outrageous antics. Kevin Michael Allin (born Jesus Christ Allin) adopted “Gg” as his stage persona, but the role took over his life. Descending into booze, drugs and schizophrenia, Gg tore through band mates, fans, and women, announcing that he would commit suicide on stage October 31st, 1991 – only to find himself in prison for assault on that date.

Bruce Campbell will be the voice of President Richard M. Nixon in an indie thriller and dark comedy set in the Watergate era called “18 1/2” as directed by Slamdance Film Festival co-founder Dan Mirvish, Bugeater Films announced Friday.
The film’s live-action cast was also unveiled and stars Willa Fitzgerald, John Magaro, Vondie Curtis Hall, Catherine Curtin and Sullivan Jones. And alongside Campbell in the voice cast are Ted Raimi as Gen. Al Haig and Jon Cryer as H. R. Haldeman.
“18 1/2” is a historical fiction film about the 18 1/2 minutes of audio erased from President Nixon’s Oval Office voice recording system that led to the unraveling of the Watergate scandal. It made the audio’s erasure one of the worst incidents of evidence destruction by a presidential administration and something that’s been ripe for conspiracy theories. Campbell has previously played another President, playing Ronald Reagan on “Fargo,” and his voice...

“Sci-fi For The Mind”
By Raymond Benson
Renowned science fiction writer Jerome Bixby produced many short stories in the genre, but he is perhaps most well-known for writing a handful of classic Star Trek episodes. The memorable original Twilight Zone entry, “It’s a Good Life,” was based on his short story, as was the same segment in The Twilight Zone—The Motion Picture (1983). Bixby was also responsible for the stories or scripts for sci-fi films such as Fantastic Voyage (1966), and It! The Terror from Beyond Space (1958).
Bixby’s last work, allegedly completed on his deathbed in 1998, was the screenplay The Man from Earth. Nearly ten years later (2007), Bixby’s son Emerson helped bring it to the screen as producer. The low-budget feature was directed by Richard Schenkman and starred David Lee Smith as “John Oldman,” a man in the present day who has lived without aging for 14,000 years. One of the more original sci-fi indies of the 2000s gets an unexpected sequel in The Man From Earth: Holocene, director-writer-producer Richard Schenkman's intriguing but underwhelming follow-up to the microbudgeted mindblower The Man From Earth (2007). Once again starring David Lee Smith as an ordinary-looking dude who is actually some 14,000 years old, this second installment works best when it adheres to the talk-heavy template set by the original, written by respected Star Trek and Twilight Zone contributor Jerome Bixby.

The Nice Guys didn’t perform as well as we felt it deserved, yet Shane Black is something of a hot commodity again. While his Predator sequel / reboot / whatever prepares for a release in February of 2018, the writer-director apparently spent this Memorial Day weekend with, fittingly, our greatest living American, Dwayne Johnson, to move forward with their long-rumored collaboration: Doc Savage, a ’30s- and ’40s-era superhero who pre-dates and, speaking for ability, in many ways matches Superman.
Taking to Instagram, the star confirmed his involvement in the project scripted by Black, Nice Guys co-writer Anthony Bagarozzi, and Chuck Mondry. Sony is supporting the project, about which little else is known — though one imagines it’s to come after The Predator, i.e. remains a few years off. Waiting aside, the point stands: it’s plenty nice to have more Black, and it’s no less odd to be actively excited about a superhero picture.

No surprise, Wilkinson's idea for a Die Hard sequel isn't gonna happen; very surprisingly, he did get a deal to write a different movie. According to The Guardian:Wilkinson and his writing partner Richard Schenkman have since agreed a deal with La-based Eclectic Pictures, which has a first-look arrangement with Lerner’s Millennium Films. The company has now optioned their high-concept screenplay The Devil, about the mythical flying creature said to have terrorised residents of southern New Jersey for centuries, for an unspecified sum. Almost anyone who saw the 2007 film The Man From Earth was struck by just how powerful that low budget sci-fi movie is. It was so low budget that it takes place almost entirely in one room with the characters just discussing the possibility of a man who never aged and the implications that might have on human history. I was as blown away by the film as anyone, so I was thrilled when I found out tonight that producer Eric D. Wilkinson and director/co-producer Richard Schenkman were putting together a Kickstarter campaign for a spin-off of the original film titled Man From Earth: The Series.
Now, it doesn’t take someone with the wisdom of 14,000 years to gather that title means that instead of a second film, this new project is going to be a series. The new plot picks up seven years after the original, when John is...

Zombie Night (2013)
Director: John Gulager
Writers: Richard Schenkman, Keith Allan, Delondra Williams
Cast: Anthony Michael Hall (Patrick), Daryl Hannah (Birdy), Alan Ruck (Joseph), Rachel G. Fox (Tracie), Shirley Jones (Nana)
If you’ve read the cast, you might think that it’s 1986 again. It’s not, but Zombie Night could be right at home on a video store shelf represented by one of those weird videocassette boxes with no bottom. What I really love about the Asylum is that they are really comfortable about the films they make. Say what you will, but I’m still convinced that somewhere some brilliant, hyperactive kid is taking all these movies in, and in twenty years, he or she is going to direct some grindhouse and horror masterpieces of their own.
The Asylum’s films could be the muse for the next Tarantino or Rodriguez. You just never know.

Writer and director Richard Schenkman has had a varied career, encompassing romantic comedies, science-fiction and, more recently, a number of horror movies. His latest film is “Mischief Night,” a home invasion thriller in which teenager Emily (Noell Coet), still suffering from psychosomatic blindness brought about by a traumatic car accident that claimed her mother’s life nine years earlier, finds herself home alone and terrorized by a masked stranger (or perhaps more) on the night before Halloween. For ShockYa, Brent Simon recently had a chance to talk to Schenkman one-on-one, about his movie, what he loves and hates about the casting process, the state of independent filmmaking, and the script he [ Read More ]

*an online screener of this film was provided by The Asylum. Director: John Gulager. Writers: Richard Schenkman, Keith Allan and Delondra Williams. Cast: Anthony Michael Hall, Daryl Hannah, Alan Ruck, Rachel G. Fox, Shirley Jones and Jennifer Taylor. Zombie Night is a made for television film, which was produced by The Asylum. This reviewer is very familiar with The Asylum's work in low budget filmmaking, so one goes into one of their movies with reasonable expectations. And, Zombie Night certainly did not exceed any hopes. This title, while well shot, is developed from a fairly weak screenplay, which is almost plotless. The focus on minor characters does not really help the viewer immerse into the experience, as well. Overall, Zombie Night is a fairly ho hum affair and in a saturated zombie film market, it will soon be reburied. The story for the film can be discussed in just a few lines.

*there are spoilers here. Director: Richard Schenkman. Writers: Jesse Baget, Richard Schenkman and Eric D. Wilkinson. Cast: Ian Bamberg, Noell Coet, Adam C. Edwards, Stephanie Erb and Daniel Hugh Kelly. Director Richard Schenkman's name has come up a couple times this week on 28Dla. Schenkman is the writer behind another horror film titled Zombie Night (2013). His latest feature film from behind the camera is titled Mischief Night. This title was released on a few home entertainment formats on Mischief Night, October 30th, 2013. Sometimes called "Gate Night" or "Devil's Night," the night before Halloween is a time for pranks and misdeeds. In this film, Mischief Night is a time for murder! Unfortunately, in this film, the villains appear very silly, which weakens the conflict. The protagonist, on the other hand, is compelling and developed well, thanks to an interesting character arc. Though, Mischief Night offers the barest of thrills. The...

I’d never heard of The Man From Earth before the Kickstarter campaign for its sequel came across my desk. At first, I thought I was reading about a follow-up to Nicolas Roeg’s sci-fi classic starring David Bowie. What surprised me more was that none of my Fsr colleagues knew what it was, either. Yet this 2007 movie has a 7.9 rating on IMDb with nearly 82k votes. And not even enough reviews on Rotten Tomatoes to result in a score. The reason is that a lot of its fans discovered it through torrents, a fact that director Richard Schenkman and producer Eric D. Wilkinson admit they’re okay with considering the awareness and eventual success it brought to the film. Wondering if the sequel, The Man From Earth II: Millennium, would be worth promoting in this column, I watched the original this week. It’s streaming on Netflix if you’re interested. Scripted...

It's generally assumed that online piracy hurts filmmakers, but in the unusual case of "The Man From Earth," illegal downloads helped to spread the word about the film. Although the film's viral success didn't help the filmmakers get funding for a sequel, it did help the film break even and gain a strong fan base, which they're hoping will support their current Kickstarter campaign for a "The Man From Earth" sequel. We asked the filmmakers to explain how piracy boosted their film's stock and why they're taking to Kickstarter to fund the sequel. The film's co-producer and director Richard Schenkman explains below: Back in the early days of my "independent filmmaking career" (an oxymoronic term if ever there was one), my always-supportive parents would occasionally ask if there was any way they could help -- what exactly it was I needed to make a movie. "A pile of money about yay high,...

My favorite line from this trailer: “The blood and guts fly out….the camera does not stop rolling!”…Well, let’s hope not!
The movie’s lead actor, who is slicing his way through more than half-naked nubile bodies is Bill Oberst Jr. If you were at the screening of the St. Louis-lensed shocker Coyote last month at Mx Theater, you saw that film’s star Mr. Oberst who is currently swinging for the title of “Hardest Working Man In Horror” with no less than twelve major roles in independent horror films this year. Bill’s most famous role was as honest Abe in Abraham Lincoln Vs Zombies (2012), which, though not quite as good as Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter, was far superior than that boring-ass Speilberg movie.
