A tent full of celebrities and movie executives in a beautiful setting gave hope for filmmaking this weekend. No, not the Indie Spirits — this was another tent, 1,300 miles away.
The Texas Film Awards took place March 3 on Willie Nelson’s famous Luck, Texas ranch, outside Austin. Under its canopy, open to the crisp Hill Country air, Jonathan Majors, Margo Martindale, John and Janet Pierson, and Mike De Luca were inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame by presenters including Luke Wilson, “Justified” creator Graham Yost, and Kevin Smith. It was a remarkable evening that defied the Red State vs. Blue State tropes that dominate cultural discourse — even as politics makes Texas filmmaking more challenging.
Earlier that day at the Film Awards press conference, DeLuca praised the state as a source of “new voices, underrepresented voices, new stories to tell, because LA can be a very bubble community. That’s...

HGTV, like all legacy Discovery channels, can no longer program exclusively for cable. There’s also streamer Discovery+ to think of, and, in a few months, the parent company’s HBO Max replacement that will also include the sprawling lifestyle roster. So, naturally, orders aren’t slowing down.
The latest re-ups are particularly interesting — not just because they feature newer faces on a network dominated by longtime talent but because they each star people of color working in a TV genre that was once almost exclusively white. The series, Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson’s Married to Real Estate and Rico León’s Rico to the Rescue, are getting a respective 12 and eight new episodes tacked onto their current orders.
Kathleen Finch, Warner Bros. Discovery US Networks Group chair and chief content officer, discussed the orders (and the push behind them) with The Hollywood Reporter over email earlier this week.

When @BarackObama sees your nephew dressed as Prince & starts singing Purple Rain! Unreal! Thank you @Potus & @MichelleObama! pic.twitter.com/pigoU7BMbX - Gary (@masterwilliams) October 31, 2016 President Obama had a fun-filled night celebrating his last Halloween in the White House with Michelle on Monday, where the president and first lady not only danced to Michael Jackson's "Thriller," but also paid homage to another iconic singer. While passing out candy to group of young trick-or-treaters, the president spotted an adorable, miniature version of Prince coming down the line to get a treat. "Hey, Prince! What's going on man?" he greeted the purple-clad little boy, before breaking into the chorus of Prince's 1984 classic "Purple Rain." Luckily mini-Prince's uncle, Gary Williams, was there and caught the whole thing on tape. "When @BarackObama sees your nephew dressed as Prince & starts singing 'Purple Rain!' Unreal!," Gary wrote on Twitter.

What do you say about Purple Rain that hasn't already been said? Not only is it one of the greatest music films of all time, but it's one of the defining films of the 1980s and earned Prince an Oscar. The soundtrack spent nearly a full half-year at Number One on the Billboard charts, sold 20 million copies worldwide and won two Grammys. But as with all things Prince, that's not the full story. A number of truly excellent books and articles have been written about the making of Purple Rain, and we're here to share some of the best bits of them with you.

A couple of months ago on the Sound On Sight gaming podcast, Open Source, myself and Mike, one of the co-editors of the gaming section, entered into a bet. “I’ll be playing Final Fantasy Xv in 2015″, he said. Once I’d stopped laughing, the battle lines were drawn. “If Final Fantasy Xv is released in 2015, I’ll eat my shoe”, I said, and the wager was made official. If Final Fantasy Xv is released this year, I eat my shoe. If it’s released after December 31st 2015, Mike eats his. Almost instantly I felt bad. So safe seemed this bet for me, that in good conscience it wasn’t even fair to take it on. Both E3 and a brand new trailer for the game at Gamescom have been and gone since we made the wager, and we still don’t have a release date for Final Fantasy Xv yet.
