2024 has been a big year for movies about imaginary friends, between the Blumhouse horror film "Imaginary" and John Krasinski's live-action family film "If." Now, Netflix is getting in on the imagination-based fun with Studio Ponoc's "The Imaginary," which already looks to be one of the best animated films of the year. With breathtaking hand-drawn animation and a groundbreaking technique of animating light and shadow, "The Imaginary" looks stunning and seems to be introducing a whimsical, heartfelt, and emotionally charged story to back up the gorgeous visuals. Here's the official synopsis of the film, which is based on A.F. Harold and illustrator Emily Gravett's beloved and award-winning novel of the same name:

Zack Snyder and Nathan Lane were among the filmmakers and cast members that joined Netflix’s animation presentation to preview a full slate of upcoming animated features and series, during an event held Thursday in Hollywood, just days before the start of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

“I love mythology,” said Snyder as he introduced a first look at his adult series “Twilight of the Gods.” On a scale like this, I feel like animation was the greatest way to tell the story.” The cast includes Sylvia Hoeks, Stuart Martin, Pilou Asbaek, John Noble, Paterson Joseph, Rahul Kohli, Jamie Clayton, Kristopher Hivju, Peter Stormare, Jamie Chung, Lauren Cohan and Corey Stoll.

Netflix has given a series order to the comedy “Neon” from Shea Serrano.

The streaming service has given the series an eight-episode order. Tyler Dean Flores, Emma Ferreira, Jordan Mendoza, and Courtney Taylor will star. Per the official logline, the series “focuses on three friends who move from a small town in Florida to Miami with the hopes of making it big in the world of reggaeton.”

Flores stars as Santi, described as “a budding reggaeton artist who, with the help of his friends, Ness (Ferreira) and Felix (Mendoza) and A&r rep, Mia (Taylor) hopes to become the biggest reggaeton star in the world. Or at least make rent.”

Flores is repped by Paradigm and Untitled Entertainment. Ferreira is repped by Oaz and 3 Arts Entertainment. Mendoza is repped by CAA, Avalon Management, and Frankfurt Kurnit Klein and Selz.

Serrano created the series and serves as an executive producer.

Netflix is dancing to the beat of reggaeton for its next comedy series.

The streamer has handed a series order to Neon, a comedy set in the world of the musical genre that birthed the song “Despacito,” the second-most-viewed video ever on YouTube.

Now in its second week of release, the vampire movie added another 6 million to its domestic total across the four-day Labor Day Weekend.

The film’s domestic total is now 15,045,000, with The Invitation finding itself in the #5 spot on the domestic charts. Worldwide, The Invitation has sunk its teeth into 18,545,000.

The Dracula-inspired horror film The Invitation (formerly known as The Bride) is now in theatres, and just opened at #1 at the domestic box office with a weekend haul of 7 million. Our own Chris Bumbray was surprised at how bloody the film was for something with a PG-13 rating, and he mentioned that to director Jessica M. Thompson (The Light of the Moon) during an interview – which you can watch in the video embed above. Thompson said they had to darken the blood to get by with a PG-13… but during an interview with our friends at Bloody Disgusting, she also said that there is an R-rated cut of The Invitation that’s going to get a streaming release!

Sony’s Screen Gems released vampire movie The Invitation into theaters over the weekend, the PG-13 horror movie scaring up 7 million here in the United States thus far.

The film has largely been de-fanged for theatrical release, but director Jessica M. Thompson tells Bloody Disgusting that a rated “R” cut exists… and will be released.

It’s not hard to tell something is off about New Carfax Manor, where the maids’ aprons are numbered and supposedly carnivorous birds roam the skies. Sitting somewhere in England’s creepiest countryside, the mansion’s implausibly cream-colored Barbie Dreamhouse exterior belies its shadowy Gothic insides; all dark corners and drafty bedrooms with bars on the windows. “The Invitation,” a gothic horror film from Sony’s Screen Gems, made 775,000 at the box office in its Thursday night preview screenings from 2,739 locations and showings that started at 4 p.m. The film opens on more than 3,000 screens this weekend.

“The Invitation” opens in a quiet week at the end of the summer and is projected for a 6 million-7 million opening against a 10 million budget. It also opens against “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” the latest film from “Mad Max” filmmaker George Miller starring Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton.

For some comparisons, Screen Gems’ “Don’t Breathe 2,” which opened last August, made 965,000 in its Thursday previews starting at 7 p.m. and went on to just shy of an 11 million opening weekend. “Escape Room: Tournament of Champions” made 8.8 million in its opening after getting a 1.2 million start in its Thursday previews.

Jo Koy debuted his family comedy Easter Sunday on Tuesday at the Tcl Chinese Theatre alongside costars Jimmy O. Yang and Tiffany Haddish, producer Dan Lin and director Jay Chandrasekhar.

The Disney+ original movie Out of My Mind has added six new actors to the cast. Emmy nominee Judith Light and Emmy winner Luke Kirby (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) have signed on along with Rosemarie DeWitt, Michael Chernus, and more. The film is an adaptation of Sharon Draper’s award-winning novel of the same name. Newcomer Phoebe-Rae Taylor stars as Melody Brooks, a girl with cerebral palsy who has a quick wit and a sharp mind. Due to her being non-verbal and using a wheelchair, Melody is not given the same academic opportunities as her classmates. Insecure‘s Courtney Taylor will play Katherine, a post-doctoral candidate and educator who notices Melody’s untapped potential. She encourages Melody to participate in mainstream education, where greater successes and challenges await. Disney+ announced Monday that Rosemarie DeWitt (“The Staircase”), Luke Kirby (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) and Judith Light (“American Crime Story”) have been added to the cast of “Out of My Mind,” a Disney+ original movie adaptation of Sharon Draper’s award-winning novel of the same name. Since we’re in a long wait between live-action Wonder Woman movies, it makes sense for Warner Animation to fill the gap. I just wish they filled it with something stronger than the just-released Wonder Woman: Bloodlines. The story is mostly about Diana and Vanessa Kapatelis with a hideous cabal of rogues attempting to plunder the technology of Themyscira.

It looks like it should fit in the animated continuity but it doesn’t really. We’re treated to a lengthy pre-credit sequence that recaps her origin and rushes things so quickly, that you blink and we’ve gone from Diana (Rosario Dawson) rescuing Steve Trevor (Jeffrey Donovan) to her leaving paradise for Man’s World and suddenly is allied with Etta Candy (Adrienne C. Moore) as they go to hang out with Dr. Julia Kapatelis (Nia Vandalos).

As 2019 begins winding down, the last entry into the line of DC Universe animated films to be released during this calendar year arrives in the form of Wonder Woman: Bloodlines. For those keeping track, the Amazon Warrior has appeared in many animated team-up flicks in this decade alone, but it’s worth pointing out how this is her first solo outing since 2009’s Wonder Woman. Much like that standalone, this direct-to-video gem is a triumph, and I hope it doesn’t take Warner Bros. long to green light a sequel.

Before I delve further into discussing the specifics of this picture, I can’t help thinking it was originally intended to coincide with Wonder Woman 1984‘s theatrical release. In fact, I’d previously wondered if Bloodlines would be delayed into mid-2020 in order to line up with the Gal Gadot-led feature since it’d been pushed. Well, that didn’t happen,...

Once we’re ready to put 2019 behind us, I’m confident that we’ll be able to say this year was a great time for DC animation. In my view, Reign of the Supermen, Justice League vs. The Fatal Five and Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were each impressive to varying degrees, with Batman: Hush dazzling audiences most recently.

If those weren’t enough, the talented folks behind these flicks have one more ace up their sleeve, that being Wonder Woman: Bloodlines. For those not up to speed, they should know this’ll be an original tale developed for the direct-to-video market, as opposed to an adaptation of any specific comic book. Furthermore, it’ll indeed take place within the New 52-inspired continuity begun by Justice League: War – only it’s set earlier on the timeline.

With the debut of the newest DC animated movie, Batman: Hush, comes a fresh batch of information about its successor. DC has finally given us a good look at Wonder Woman: Bloodlines, the last movie on the slate for 2019, and while much of the information released is not new, there is one extremely promising tidbit that is officially out in the world.

With Batman: Hush now in our rearview mirror (you can check out our review for that one here), our attention now turns toward the next major entry in the hallowed library of DC animated movies. If you’ve been keeping up with recent news, then you know that to be Wonder Woman: Bloodlines.

To bring those late to the party up to speed, know this flick does indeed follow the New 52-inspired continuity begun by Justice League: War – but it’s set earlier on the timeline. From the look of it, we could consider it animation’s answer to Wonder Woman: Year One, though I must be quick to point out this isn’t an adaptation of Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott’s work on the comic book side. I mean, it’s possible some cues could be taken from the book, but this is an original story.

Odd as it may seem, a certain Amazon Warrior hasn’t actually headlined an animated film of her own since 2009’s Wonder Woman. She’s played a huge part in numerous direct-to-video Justice League flicks in the time since, sure, but it’s probably safe to say her fanbase has been waiting with bated breath for some sort of followup.

Thankfully, the hiatus will end later this year once Wonder Woman: Bloodlines arrives on home video. According to a first look featurette included on the Batman: Hush Blu-ray (stay tuned to We Got This Covered for our full review pertaining to that one), this tale will indeed fall in line with the New 52-inspired continuity started with Justice League: War – but it’ll take place earlier in Diana’s superhero career.
