Anthony and Joe Russo, the Russo Brothers, have directed some of the biggest movies of all time, with their film Avengers: Endgame coming in second place just behind James Cameron’s Avatar… but that hasn’t made it any easier to get their sci-fi adventure film The Electric State out into the world. The project was first announced back in 2017 and experienced multiple ups, downs, and behind-the-scenes shake-ups on its way to production, with filming beginning in 2022 and wrapping in early 2023. Reshoots followed in 2024. Now The Electric State is finally be ready to make its way out into the world, so we figured it was time to put together a list of Everything We Know About The Electric State:

Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi adventure The Electric State adapts a much-loved art book by Simon Stalenhag. Or does it? We weigh up what counts as an adaptation.
Does Netflix read YouTube comments? If so, it’s a wonder what it makes of the 2,200 (and counting) responses beneath the debut trailer for its upcoming movie, The Electric State. They’re not what you’d call enthusiastic.
“It’s literally an art book,” reads one. “How did they make it look so wrong.”
“The tone looks nothing like the book whatsoever,” reads another. “I loved the hopeless, lonely, and dystopian feel of the source material.”
It’s churlish to judge a film too harshly based on its marketing, of course, but watching the 147-second promo for Netflix’s upcoming, (reported) $320m sci-fi adventure raises a number of questions. Most pressingly: why option Swedish artist and author Simon Stalenhag’s graphic novel of...

The Electric State promised big adventure and even bigger action during a panel at New York Comic Con, which showed off Anthony and Joe Russo’s latest Netflix film.
The footage and discussion with creatives and cast — including Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown — was presented to an electric crowd at the Empire Stage on Thursday, hours after a new teaser trailer dropped online.
The film hits Netflix on March 16 and is a spin on Simon Stalenhag’s graphic novel, which explores a battle between man and intelligent machine set in the ‘90s.
Electric State follows Michelle (Brown), a young woman with a sweet but mysterious robot who teams up with eccentric drifter Keats (Pratt) for a cross-country expedition to find her brother in a retro-futuristic U.S., where an uneasy peace has settled following a human and AI war.
Joe, who jokingly shared that he’s “exhausted” with his...

The Russo Brothers are back! After dabbling in sprawling crime saga territory with Cherry and getting stuck into the world of spies with The Gray Man, the men behind Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame are undertaking a road trip movie with a robot-shaped twist in The Electric State, a post apocalyptic sci-fi joint based on Simon Stålenhag's striking 2018 graphic novel. Boasting an all-star cast (Millie Bobby Brown! Chris Pratt! Giancarlo Esposito! Brian Cox!) and a compelling conceit — What if man and AI went to war in the 90s and turned America into a bot-strewn wasteland? — it looks like a welcome return to the Russos' genre roots. Check out the trailer below:
Set to a slowed down mix of Oasis' 'Champagne Supernova' and filled with quintessential post-apocalyptic imagery — dystopian headsets, rusting robots, spontaneous fire pits, deserted frontier-looking towns — The Electric State bears all the hallmarks of a classic 80s, Amblinesque romp,...

“The Electric State” is alive.
The new sci-fi adventure, from Anthony and Joe Russo (the directors of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame”), stars Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt — and you can get a first look at the wild, robot-filled world in the brand-new trailer out Thursday. Watch it below.
The movie, based on the graphic novel by Simon Stålenhag (whose work also inspired the Prime Video series “Tales From the Loop”), takes place in an alternate 1990s that has survived a robot uprising that started when the animatronics developed by Walt Disney for Disneyland gained sentience. Now the robots live in exile.
Brown plays Michelle, an orphaned teenager living in this post-apocalyptic society, whose missing brother makes contact with her via a robot. She hires a smuggler named Keats (Pratt) to help get her across the wasteland and find her brother, all while discovering the mystery behind his disappearance.

Millie Bobby Brown may soon be saying bye to the ’80s-set “Stranger Things,” but the Netflix staple star isn’t traveling far in time (or space) for her upcoming film “The Electric State.”
Brown leads the adventure feature alongside Marvel alum Chris Pratt, who reunites with his “Avengers: Endgame” co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo for the 1990s-set film. Brown plays Michelle, an orphaned teen who is navigating life in a society where sentient robots resembling cartoons and mascots live in exile after a failed uprising. Yet after Michelle befriends lovable robot Cosmo, who appears to be controlled by her maybe-dead younger brother, she sets out to find the truth about what really happened to her family.
Of course, Brown’s co-star Pratt seems to be continuing his “Guardians of the Galaxy” alter ego by once again playing a futuristic smuggler.
The official synopsis reads: “Determined to find the beloved sibling she thought she had lost,...

The Russo Brothers may be readying their MCU second coming as we speak, but before the filmmaking duo get stuck into Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars' multiversal madness, they've still one more non-ip blockbuster up their sleeves yet. Based on Simon Stålenhag's visually striking 2018 graphic novel, The Electric State — whose mega ensemble includes Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, and Woody Harrelson among many, many others — is a Netflix bound, blockbuster sci-fi fantasy set in an alternate version of the 90s where man and AI went to war. We know — how far fetched! Boasting robots, wigs, and post-apocalyptic wasteland vistas galore, it's a far cry from the grittier, more grounded fare the Russos have endeavoured to make with post-Endgame joints Cherry and The Gray Man. Check out the newly released first images from the movie below:

Marvel has gained great popularity since their first avengers film (‘The Avengers’), winning loyal fans all over the world by establishing seamlessly integrating characters, plot lines, and events across MCU movies and TV shows. This past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios officially said goodbye to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and hello to Avengers: Doomsday.
This of course means that Marvel is likely done with Jonathan Majors' Kang the Conqueror as the season 2 finale of Loki allows the film studio to tie up the Kang/Tva storyline with no loose ends.
It seems TMZ has caught up with Majors in West Hollywood early yesterday morning, where they asked the actor about his feelings on being replaced by Robert Downey Jr.'s Victor von Doom in the next two Avengers films.
"Yeah, I'm heartbroken," said Majors in response to the question. "Of course [I'm heartbroken]. I love him, I love Kang. Doctor Doom is wicked, though."
The TMZ reporter then asked if Majors thought it was unfair that Robert Downey Jr. has a convicted felony charge for drug and weapon possessions on his rap sheet, whereas Majors only has a misdemeanor.

Marvel Studios appears to have scrapped plans for Kang the Conqueror to be the Multiverse Saga's big bad, instead pivoting to Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday (which had been announced as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty in 2022) and Avengers: Secret Wars.
The Russo Brothers will direct both movies, while Avengers: Endgame co-writer Stephen McFeely has replaced Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness scribe Michael Waldron as their sole writer.
Of course, by far the biggest news to come out of Hall H was Robert Downey Jr.'s MCU return as Doctor Doom!
Variety has spoken to several inside sources and confirmed that Joe and Anthony Russo will earn a whopping $80 million between them for helming both Avengers movies. As for Downey, he'll be making "significantly more" when he suits up as the evil Victor Von Doom.
While the Russo Brothers' deal doesn't include back-end compensation, it contains performance escalators that...

At this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios welcomed Joe and Anthony Russo back to the MCU by announcing them as the new directors of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Shortly after that memorable Hall H panel concluded, the Russo Brothers described Secret Wars as "the book that made us fall in love with comics." Now, they shared a lengthier statement about their return and the decision to cast Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
You’re the best damn fans in the world, and we’ve missed you.
When we made Avengers: Endgame we truly believed that it was the end of the road for us in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We had put all the passion, love and imagination that we had into the Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War, and then culminated it all with Endgame. All within a few years. From roughly 2014 to 2019—starting with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and ending with Avengers: Endgame—Marvel Studios and the Marvel Cinematic Universe went on a run of massively successful films that dominated pop culture on a global scale. It arguably represented the absolute peak of the superhero genre’s reach and power, and certainly its popularity. Four of the biggest and best movies during that stretch, including the aforementioned The Winter Soldier and Endgame, were also directed by the same guys: Anthony and Joe Russo.
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige saw something in the Russos’ pitch for The Winter Soldier, which they envisioned as a paranoid political thriller, that overrode any concerns that they were basically TV directors with a handful of small, poorly received features to their names. Feige’s bet paid off, as the Russos went from The Winter Soldier to the even more expansive Captain America: Civil War...

Marvel Studios last held a Hall H panel at the San Diego Comic-Con in 2022; during that, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars were both announced for a 2025 release.
A lot has changed since then, including the Multiverse Saga's focus! Kang is out and Doctor Doom is in, with Robert Downey Jr. set to make his MCU return as Victor Von Doom. How this links up to his time as Iron Man, if indeed it does, remains to be seen.

We always knew Marvel Studios' return to Hall H at Comic-Con this year was going to be big, but it would be safe to say nobody had a Robert Downey Jr. MCU return on their bingo cards. And yet, that's exactly what we got with Kevin Feige and co's mic drop of a closing panel reveal. As Harvey Dent once said, "You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain." And in Iron Man actor Downey Jr.'s case, he'll have done both when he takes to our screens as Doctor Doom (!) in The Russo Brothers' newly titled Avengers: Doomsday (formerly Avengers: The Kang Dynasty) and the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars. Check out the moment Downey Jr.'s return was revealed below:

Robert Downey Jr. is returning for the next 'Avengers' movies - but not as Iron Man.The 59-year-old actor - who played the snarky hero from the eponymous 2008 flick until the character's gut-wrenching death in 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ - was unveiled as the villainous Victor Von Doom aka Dr. Doom in the upcoming 'Avengers: Doomsday' and 'Avengers: Secret Wars' at Comic Con on Saturday (27.07.24).The presentation saw Marvel boss Kevin Feige confirm Anthony and Joe Russo would be returning to the franchise to direct 'Doomsday', and they explained the film would lead towards an adaptation of the popular comic-book 'Secret Wars', but not before the return of a familiar face.As over 20 people in olive green robes and masks assembled on the stage, Joe Russo teased: “If we’re going to bring Victor Von Doom to the screen — he is one of the more complex characters...

We've all been wondering what Marvel Studios would do about its Kang problem and it appears Doctor Doom was the solution after all! Avengers: The Kang Dynasty has been officially retitled Avengers: Doomsday and will release in May 2026.
As for Avengers: Secret Wars, that's set to follow a year later in May 2027, presumably ending the Multiverse Saga.
However, by far the biggest news to come out of the hour-long Hall H panel was the revelation that Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom!
It sounds like he'll appear in both upcoming Avengers movies and, as expected, those will be directed by Avengers: Endgame helmers Joe and Anthony Russo. They've steered Marvel Studios to huge success in the past so it makes perfect sense to trust them with the Multiverse Saga's two most important projects.
Joining them will be Stephen McFeely as the writer of both movies.

Marvel officially confirmed that Joe and Anthony Russo on stage to announce that they’ll be directing both “Avengers 5” (now titled “Avengers: Doomsday”) and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Stephen McFeely, who cowrote the Russos’ previous Marvel films with Christopher Markus, will write the screenplays for both movies.
Marvel announced the Russo Brothers’ return by first showing a sizzle of all of the Marvel Studios films the Russos had previously directed — “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.” As they walked out, the thunderous crowd shouted “Russo! Russo!”
The Russos said, “We missed you guys. You are the best damn fans in the world.”
“Being able to create stories and explore characters within the Marvel Universe fulfilled a life-long dream of ours, and we discovered a powerful connection with audiences in each film that we made,” the Russo Brothers said in a statement.

Yesterday evening, the news broke that the Russo Brothers are in talks with Marvel Studios to direct Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Now, Jeff Sneider has shared what he's heard about the situation on The Hot Mic podcast. It sounds like Joe and Anthony approached Marvel Studios first, only to be turned down because the studio was already in talks with other filmmakers.
We know Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy was being eyed to helm Avengers 5 at one point but is thought to have passed so he can focus on other projects, including a Star Wars movie.
Believe it or not, it seems no one wanted the job of helming the next Avengers movies. Why? Well, because getting them wrong would be akin to career suicide! Marvel Studios, unable to find anyone, then returned to the Russos with an offer (it's likely an official announcement will be made...

The Avengers films in the MCU have been the biggest money-makers of the franchise. With every installment, the ultimate ensemble piece where various MCU heroes come together to fight a common enemy grew in size and scope. The last two Avengers films were a cultural phenomenon that catapulted the franchise to unprecedented heights.

Breaking news from Marvel Studios this afternoon as The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Joe and Anthony Russo, a.k.a. the Russo Brothers, are in early talks to helm the still-untitled Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Joe and Anthony Russo are in talks to become Avengers directors once more, returning to helm the next two (!!) Avengers movies. This would mark a homecoming for the filmmakers, who previously helmed the Marvel Cinematic Universe entires Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
The Russo Brothers’ return to the Avengers franchise comes at a high-stakes time for the MCU. Originally, the fifth Avengers movie was to be subtitled The Kang Dynasty. Looking at the Harry Potter films in retrospect, it’s clear that Jk Rowling’s magical franchise not only witnessed unprecedented success but also extended its influence far beyond the magical world of Hogwarts. When Captain America: The First Avenger Writers Settled The Debate About Chris Evans Played Steve Rogers( Photo Credit – Facebook )
Chris Evans’ Captain America is kind of the moral compass of the Avengers team, whose past was explored in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. However, there were quite a few things that bothered the fans, like how Steve Rogers became accustomed to the new world, and a bigger question than that was whether he was virg*n. A deleted scene explained how Steve got used to the modern world, and the doubt about his virgin*ty was cleared a decade later by the movie’s writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Scroll below for the deets.
In the first movie, Steve is a skinny person who lacks the physique of a soldier, but his resolution and determination surpass everyone else’s. Thus, he was chosen to be given the super soldier serum and transformed physically.

Avengers: Endgame sits at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes with more than 550 reviews. However, with many critics turning on superhero movies in recent years, there's been an increase in "superhero fatigue" talk and a general, often overly harsh, criticism of the genre.
However, one person who won't put up with the 2019 movie being torn down in any way is singer and talk show host Kelly Clarkson.
In a new video posted on The Kelly Clarkson Show's YouTube channel, the American Idol winner responds to negative Letterboxd reviews. In the case of Avengers: Endgame, she was having none of it.

Kevin Feige had a far crazier idea for Avengers: Endgame climax inspired by the Toy Story 3 ending. Feige wanted to kill off all the six Og Avengers at the end of the film and proposed the idea to directors Russo brothers and screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. However, they shot down the idea since the directors believed that they could not do justice to all these character deaths.

Avengers: Endgame is one of the greatest Marvel movies ever to be made. Not only did it perfectly bring together all the different characters in one space without feeling like clutter, but presented a conclusive end to the decades-long saga. Just when all hope seemed lost, the movie proved that there is always a bigger picture hidden in plain sight and that one only needs to look for it.

The making of the Infinity Saga is as big a mystery to the fans as the entirety of Phase Five’s Secret Invasion. The narrative established in the run-up to Avengers: Endgame proved that the level of planning that was required to pull off the two-part grand finale would make the Time Heist look like child’s play. As the Avengers played pretend on screen, the real superheroes got to work to create one of the most visionary and sprawling spectacles ever dreamed of on film.

Have you ever witnessed a cinematic moment so moving that it lingered long after the credits rolled? The death of Natasha Romanoff in Avengers: Endgame was just one of the moments that devastated Marvel fans, and Scarlett Johansson found it almost as hard to come to terms when she learned about her character’s fate.
Kevin Feige produced the 2019 superhero flick, which is a direct sequel to Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Mark Ruffalo.
Scarlett Johansson in and as Black Widow
Indeed, Johansson handled Feige’s cruel Avengers: Endgame decision with the poise of a true champion, a decision that continues to shock Marvel fans to this day. But behind the scenes, the Black Widow actress, 39, was not immune to the weight of this narrative shift, admitting to crying in her shower alone—a raw, human reaction to a character she had lived and breathed for almost a decade.

In 2022, Netflix released The Grey Man, an action thriller film starring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, Regé-Jean Page, Wagner Moura, Julia Butters, Dhanush (in his Hollywood debut), Alfre Woodard, and Billy Bob Thornton. The movie received mixed reviews, with critics praising the cast and action but criticizing the “clichéd script.” The movie was directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, with Joe Russo contributing to the script alongside Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
But, despite the mixed reviews, Netflix was seemingly satisfied with the movie as a sequel was ordered, and based on what the Russo Brothers recently said, The Grey Man sequel seems to be their top priority at this moment, although they do have a lot of upcoming projects.

"Holy s**t! Really?" That's how Chris Evans reacted when he was pitched the basic idea for what would become "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," according to Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige "Yeah, that's the reaction we want! That'd be great!" he said in a 2014 interview with IGN. When the final product was released to the world that year, many fans ended up having the same reaction as Evans did. Holy s**t, indeed.
What directors Joe & Anthony Russo accomplished alongside writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely was nothing short of game-changing. "The Winter Soldier" was a revelation then, and it remains one of the most heralded comic book movies of all time today. It was the moment that Evans ascended...
