The original Smile became a sleeper hit for writer/director Parker Finn in 2022, so it’s no surprise that the film has generated a sequel just two years later, especially given its obvious franchise potential. It’s particularly gratifying to find Finn back in both the writer’s and the director’s chairs, because he’s surely one of the finest jump scare orchestrators in the business.
Smile 2 picks up six days after the events of the first movie, as desperate cop Joel (a briefly returning Kyle Gallner) tries and fails to get rid of the cursed entity that infects each host and makes them see grotesquely grinning figures, before eventually killing themselves, while also wearing a monstrous smile.

What are you looking for in a sequel? Dependable familiarity or narrative evolutions? Parker Finn's Smile 2 is a sharper, meaner, and despicably addictive amplification of Smile that doesn’t tamper with what works. Finn's execution of trauma-driven haunts is an upgrade across the board, albeit recognizable. It's funnier, flashier, scarier, and doesn't feign complacency even for a millisecond. Smile 2 is an invigoration of exposed demonic templates (typed by someone lukewarm on Finn's successful original). Move over, Lady Raven; Skye Riley's taking center stage.
Naomi Scott is a knockout as pop music megastar Skye Riley, an ex-addict who's just announced her hotly anticipated "Welcome Back" tour. She's a sober and rebranded shell of herself but pushes forward, driven by the pressures of not letting down her ravenous fans, profiting record executives (Raúl Castillo), or supportive loved ones. Skye's mother and acting manager, Elizabeth (Rosemarie DeWitt), keeps a...

Every horror movie franchise operates according to its own set of rules, so in the spirit of public service, we’ll offer a refresher on the parameters of filmmaker Parker Finn’s 2022 directorial debut Smile. There’s a supernatural parasite who feeds on trauma and attaches itself to an unwilling host. Side effects may include: paranoia, insanity, hallucinations involving friends and loved ones beaming ear to ear like they’re auditioning for a biopic on the Joker, suicidal ideation, and actual suicide. After six or seven days, the unlucky recipient...

Smile arrived in theaters in 2002 and earned $217 million worldwide on a $17 million budget. That's a massive profit for a horror movie and Paramount wasted no time in developing a sequel, Smile 2, which is set to be released this Friday.
Based on the first wave of reviews, the follow-up is just as good as - but perhaps not better than - its predecessor.
However, as we first reported on FearHQ.com, new lead Naomi Scott (Power Rangers) is receiving a lot of praise for her performance and it sounds like there are plenty of scares for horror fans to get excited about.
The Hollywood Reporter says Smile 2 "will leave plenty of horror fans grinning from ear to ear," but cautions, "[Director Parker Finn] perhaps just needs to back off a little from the misconception that more is more and maintain a greater focus on his story skills."
Variety echoes that by explaining,...

“Why are you doing this to me?” asks Sosie Bacon’s Rose Cotter at the conclusion of Parker Finn’s 2022 breakout horror hit Smile. “Because your mind is so inviting,” responds the monster that’s been systematically driving her mad and feeding upon her trauma. Unlike many of the possession movies that the film is indebted to, its shapeshifting parasitic baddie isn’t content to just feed off of anyone. It has to be someone with a black well of darkness to drink deep from. With Smile 2, it becomes clearer why this is so uniquely disturbing, with Finn turning the personal into the apocalyptic and offering up a near-perfect sequel in terms of go-for-broke intensity and one-upmanship.

One hit horror sequel deserves another, and Art the Clown won’t be the only one smiling this weekend. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Despite the huge success of Damien Leone‘s “Terrifier 3,” Art the Clown will have to deal with the fact there is likely to be an even bigger horror sequel this weekend as Paramount Pictures releases “Smile 2.” It’s the follow-up to the 2022 hit horror movie from filmmaker Parker Finn, which opened with $22.6 million on its way to $105.9 million domestic and $217 million worldwide. It should go without saying that October is the perfect month for a horror release, but oddly, the original “Smile” opened on September 30, then had sustained legs with smaller week-to-week drops. Other horror franchises that have dominated the month of October include the “Saw” and “Paranormal Activity” movies, both which saw huge bumps in business with their second chapters.

Parker Finn’s 2022 feature debut, Smile, was transparently molded from chain-possession horror like The Ring and It Follows, in which a death curse is passed from one victim to the next while the agonized protagonist tries to wriggle out of it. Despite its familiarity, the movie worked, in part because the writer-director brought plenty of style and sustained anxiety to the derivative premise but also because the means of transferal was so disturbingly ordinary — a big toothy grin. The film cost a modest $17 million to make and grossed north of $200 million worldwide, which made a sequel inevitable.

When you’re the son of a Hollywood icon like Jack Nicholson, expectations definitely run high. Ray Nicholson is stepping into that glare with the horror film Smile 2, sharing the screen with the talented Naomi Scott. Set to release later this week, this sequel to the hit Smile (2022) is helmed by Parker Finn and promises to be a spine-tingling ride.

In Smile 2, Scott plays Skye Riley, a pop singer who faces terrifying challenges as she prepares for a world tour. While Ray Nicholson’s involvement in such a high-profile project is thrilling, some critics wonder if he can truly shine, especially with Scott poised to deliver a performance that’s sure to steal the spotlight.
Needless to say, Jack Nicholson’s son will need to bring his A-game to shine alongside Scott in what’s sure to be a nail-biting experience.

Pop star Skye Riley (played by Naomi Scott) thinks she’s going crazy in the final trailer for Smile 2. Released just ahead of the film’s October 18, 2024 release, the minute-long trailer is completely bonkers and shows poor Skye being terrorized by smiling faces.
The cast of the R-rated sequel also includes Rosemarie DeWitt, Lukas Gage, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Peter Jacobson, Ray Nicholson, Dylan Gelula, and Raúl Castillo. Smile‘s Kyle Gallner reprises his role for the sequel.
“About to embark on a new world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley (Scott) begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events,” reads Paramount Pictures’ synopsis. “Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and pressures of fame, she must confront her dark past before her life spirals out of control.”
Smile‘s Parker Finn wrote, directed, and produced the sequel. Additional producers include Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Isaac Klausner, and Robert Salerno.

We’ve seen this smile before … sort of.
While on the red carpet for the forthcoming Smile 2, the follow-up to the Sosie Bacon-led horror film about a grinning harbinger of death, star Ray Nicholson was asked about his approach to the genre and how fans have likened the smile on his character’s poster to that of his father Jack Nicholson’s deranged smirk for the seminal Stanley Kubrick film The Shining.
“We’re very different people,” the actor told Deadline at the premiere. “I was born in 1992, he was born in 1937. The things that affect me don’t necessarily affect him. Obviously, I love him. He’s my inspiration. I ate dinner with him every night. I studied it, that’s how I learned to be a human being. So, of course we’re gonna be kind of similar.”

You didn't think the Joker would be the only one putting a twisted smile on your face this spooky season, did you? Todd Phillips, Joaquin Phoenix, and Lady Gaga had no choice but to watch as their version of the Clown Prince of Crime dropped the ball with the critical and box office disaster of "Joker: Folie à Deux," but maybe a more modest sequel to another horror hit could pick up the slack in a big way. In 2022, "Smile" scared the living daylights out of audiences on its way to generally positive reviews and a total of well over $200 million worldwide -- both key ingredients to greenlighting an inevitable sequel. Fast forward a couple of years later, and "Smile 2" is already staring down the barrel of a much-needed opening weekend success. And those prospects just increased significantly now that early reactions have just begun to hit social media.

Writers/Directors David Charbonier and Justin Powell, the exciting duo behind recent horror movies The Djinn and The Boy Behind the Door, are back with a new intense horror movie in Push (read my review).
The film, which just received its world premiere at Sitges, follows a pregnant realtor, Natalie, who must survive a night of terror when a deranged client shows up at her open house. That the woman is on the cusp of giving birth means time is of the essence, compounding survival odds.

Writers/Directors David Charbonier and Justin Powell have a way with single-location thrillers that are simplistic in setup but visceral in unrelenting suspense. Their style of lean, efficient storytelling that puts the horror first continues with their latest, Push (formerly titled Open House). Armed with a much bigger location and stylish cinematography, Charbonier and Powell’s latest makes for a more mature effort that delivers (pun intended) in a massive way when it comes to nail-biting tension and intense thrills.

Writer, director, and producer Parker Finn says the trick to unlocking the Smile 2 story was to find the right character to follow. That character turned out to be Skye Riley, a pop star played by Naomi Scott. “Skye is this famous star who is surrounded by people, and yet she’s incredibly alone,” says Finn in the new behind-the-scenes featurette. “It’s a frightening situation for anybody to be in.”
The sequel’s cast also includes Rosemarie DeWitt, Lukas Gage, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Peter Jacobson, Ray Nicholson, Dylan Gelula, and Raúl Castillo. Smile‘s Kyle Gallner reprises his role for the sequel.

A new trailer and poster for Smile 2 has just dropped (via FearHQ.com) and, if you enjoyed Smile, all signs point to this being a worthy successor to the surprise horror hit.
As well as hinting that we'll finally learn more about the supernatural curse which haunted Sosie Bacon's Rose Cotter in the first instalment, we see Naomi Scott's popstar, Skye Riley, go to drastic measures to escape it. If that works...well, it may be a game-changer for the franchise.
Smile has 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and was well-received by horror fans; expectations are high for this sequel to deliver, and shifting the spotlight to a lead character who's a celebrity promises to shake up this premise in an exciting way.
Parker Finn returns to write and direct the sequel, so there's really no reason to believe it won't be every bit as terrifying as its predecessor.

"Skye – pull it together, and get back out there." Paramount has unveiled the main official trailer for the horror sequel Smile 2, once again directed by creator Parker Finn. The first teaser trailer arrived back in June a few months ago, this one is even crazier and more frightening. About to embark on a new world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley (played by Naomi Scott) begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events. Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and the pressures of fame, Skye is forced to face her dark past to regain control of her life before it spirals out of control. In addition to Scott starring as Riley, this also features Rosemarie DeWitt, Kyle Gallner (from the first movie), Lukas Gage, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Peter Jacobson, Raúl Castillo, Dylan Gelula, and Ray Nicholson. This looks like one of the most exciting horror sequels in years, inventively bigger and even freakier.

When in doubt, just plaster on a smile. Such is the haunting advice behind Parker Finn’s highly-anticipated sequel “Smile 2,” which centers on a pop star played by Naomi Scott who is slowly slipping into insanity.
Coupled with M. Night Shyamalan’s “Trap,” concert-centric horror films are becoming a trend.
The first “Smile” was a success — especially by indie standards — so the sequel got a star-studded cast and a bigger budget.
The “Smile” 2 synopsis reads: “About to embark on a new world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley (Scott) begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events. Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and the pressures of fame, Skye is forced to face her dark past to regain control of her life before it spirals out of control.”
Rosemarie DeWitt, Ray Nicholson, Kyle Gallner, Lukas Gage, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Peter Jacobson, Raúl Castillo, and Dylan Gelula co-star.
