Paramount+’s latest UK slate is headlined by a dark drama from The Bridge and Marcella creator Hans Rosenfeldt, with new unscripted shows including a reality series about LA hairdressers and true crime doc about a notorious hoax caller.
Leading a six-strong order is Rosenfeldt’s drama The Burning Girls, a six-part series based on the Cj Tudor novel about a village haunted by a dark past.
Deadline first revealed news Rosenfeldt and Buccaneer had landed rights to the project in March last year, at which point Paramount+ was not involved.
Buccaneer Media is producing in association with Vis – Paramount’s international production arm – and Scandi noir supremo Rosenfeldt is leading a writing team that includes fellow The Bridge writing alum Camilla Ahlgren. Cast has yet to be set.

Former Tele München Group managing director Herbert Kloiber’s Night Train Media has taken a majority stake in London-based non-scripted distributor BossaNova as it looks to align its documentary and drama businesses.
Under the deal, BossaNova — founded last year by non-scripted veterans Paul Heaney and Dina Subhani — will have access to an acquisition fund to fulfil the company’s mission of co-creating and co-funding projects by matching producers with the most relevant platforms and broadcasters: a clever model in the non-scripted arena that was popularized by Heaney at his former company, Tcb Media Rights, which was sold to “Pooch Perfect” distributor Beyond Rights last summer.
Earlier this year, as part of its inaugural BossaNova Development Day, the distributor connected with more than 50 buyers and commissioners from 35 channels and platforms with 30 producers, who pitched over 75 new projects. Per the half-hour comedy’s description, “The Psychology of Stupidity” follows neuroscientist psychologist Anthony, who opens a practice to try to cure people of stupid behavior under the mantra that until you accept your own stupidity, you can‘t expect others to stop acting so stupidly. Myfanwy Thomas wakes up at Millenium Bridge in London surrounded by dead bodies.
She doesn't know how she got there, or what happened to the bodies. That's the hook for new Starz drama The Rook, which premieres tonight at 10/9c.
To say the series is a disappointment would be the understatement of the century. It leaves behind many parts of what made the novel it's based on a success.
It would have probably worked better if it was more faithful to the novel.
Emma Greenwell (Shameless) takes on the lead role and does her best as her character pivots her way through the dumbest of scenarios.

Starz has released a trailer for a new series they’ve produced called The Rook. It’s an adaptation of the book written by Daniel O’Malley and the story centers on a woman with amnesia who slowly learns that she is a Secret Service agent who is part of a group that recruits people with supernatural abilities and takes on paranormal threats. She also learns that she has special abilities of her own.
This looks like an interesting series worth checking out and it stars Olivia Munn, Adrian Lester, Ronan Rafter, Catherine Steadman, Jon Fletcher, Shelley Conn, and James D’Arcy.

Starz released its trailer for original series “The Rook” on Tuesday, which stars a very confused — and very much in danger — Emma Greenwell.
“The Rook” is a supernatural spy thriller, which tells the story of Myfanwy Thomas (Greenwell), a woman who wakes up in the rain beside London’s Millennium Bridge with no memory of who she is and no way to explain the circle of latex-gloved dead bodies splayed around her. When Myfanwy discovers she is a high-ranking official in the Checquy, Britain’s last truly secret service for people with paranormal abilities, she will have to navigate the dangerous and complex world of the agency to uncover who wiped her memory — and why she is a target.
Watch the trailer above. In it, Greenwell wonders aloud, “What kind of monster am I?”

Netflix movies may still be question mark in terms of being allowed in competition at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival in May, but the streaming giant will be present at Cannes Series. The Cannes television festival will mark its second year next month with Netflix going up against rival Amazon in the competition section. The full lineup includes series from Israel, Norway, Spain, and Belgium.
Netflix’s competition entry is the German series “How to Sell Drugs Online Fast,” from writers Philipp Käßbohrer and Matthias Murmann. Amazon is heading to Cannes Series with “The Feed,” a London-set drama created by Channing Powell and based on the novel Nick Clark Windo. “The Feed” stars “Game of Thrones” favorite Michelle Fairley opposite David Thewlis in a story about a piece of technology that allows people to instantly share thoughts and emotions. The tech falls into the wrong hands and becomes a murderous weapon.

The Rook is a supernatural spy drama – a genre particularly suited to be made by “naturally duplicitous” Brits, according to exec producer Stephen Garrett. Character Seven boss Garrett, who co-founded Broadchurch producer Kudos, also discussed the departure of Twilight author Stephenie Meyer from the Starz drama.
The Rook tells the story of Myfanwy Thomas (Emma Greenwell), who wakes up in the rain beside London’s Millennium Bridge with no memory of who she is and no way to explain the circle of latex-gloved dead bodies splayed around her. When Thomas discovers she is a high-ranking official in the Checquy, Britain’s last truly secret service for people with paranormal abilities, she will have to navigate the dangerous and complex world of the agency to uncover who wiped her memory – and why she is a target.

"I can't really tell you how to do it, I can only describe how I did it." Vertical Entertainment has released the first official trailer for an indie horror thriller from the UK titled Astral, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Chris Mul. The film's story follows a metaphysics university student who discovers the practice of "astral projection" and the scientific possibility of a dimension outside our own. Coming to terms with the untimely death of his mother, Alex turns to astral projection in an attempt to reconnect with her. Of course, evil never dies. Astral stars Frank Dillane as Alex, with Vanessa Grasse, Damson Idris, Catherine Steadman, Trevor White, and Darwin Shaw. At first glance, this seems pretty much like every other demonic spirit horror film out there, I'm not really sure what makes it unique. But it's worth a look anyway. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Chris Mul's Astral,...

Exclusive: There is change at the helm of Starz’s upcoming spy thriller series The Rook, from Lionsgate and Liberty Global. Lisa Zwerling (Betrayal) and Karyn Usher (Bones) have come onboard as showrunners. They will replace in the role The Night Manager‘s Stephen Garrett who remains an executive producer. Meanwhile, Twilight‘s Stephenie Meyer who, via her production company originally brought The Rook to Lionsgate, is stepping away due to differences in creative visions of the project.
The behind-the-scenes change comes early in the production of The Rook, which is currently filming the first two episodes of its first-season order in London. The showrunner switch will have no impact on production, which will continue as scheduled. The Rook is slated to air on Starz in the U.S., and across Liberty Global’s international platforms in 2019.
Zwerling and Usher will executive produce via their Carpool Entertainment production company alongside Garrett under his Character 7 banner.

Who are the stars of tomorrow in TV, film and theatre?
Digital Spy presents its predictions for 2015 - in no particular order, here are seven young actors, writers, comedians and musicians who look destined to make an impression on the world of entertainment this year.
1. Billy Howle
After graduating from the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in 2013, Billy Howle quickly landed television work in Channel 4's New Worlds and on ITV's Vera.
But the young actor first came to our attention last year with his powerful performance as the troubled James in sorely underrated countryside thriller Glue.
Next up for the talented Howle is a plum role in BBC One's adaptation of Laurie Lee's Cider with Rosie, which is due to be broadcast later in 2015.
2. Hannah Britland
A graduate from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Hannah Britland launched her television acting career with early roles in Misfits and Skins.

You may have overlooked the 2008 Scottish offering known as Outpost, but seeing as it played multiple genre-friendly film festivals, stars Ray Stevenson, and earned some decent praise from the horror press (myself included), I'm going to assume that FEARnet readers have seen it by now. (It's about a group of soldiers who discover a nasty old Nazi experiment and do not live to regret it.) Those who enjoyed that flick will be pleased to know that not only is there an Outpost 2 available now, but there will soon be a third chapter. For the sake of this review, we'll focus on Steve Barker's Outpost: Black Sun.
Right off the bat I'm tempted to give Outpost: Black Sun a break because of one simple reason: it offers a potentially ridiculous premise, but it does so with a grim tone and an admirably straight face. A sequel that deals with "Nazi...

Outpost: Black Sun follows a young woman named Lena (Catherine Steadman), who has spent most of her life hunting down notorious Nazi war criminals. The last name on her list is a man known only as Klausener, a ruthless German scientist who in the closing stages of WW2 was working on the technology to create an immortal Nazi army. During an expedition to Eastern Europe, Lena stumbles upon Wallace (Richard Coyle), a friendly but mysterious ally who shares in her desire to chase down the deadly Nazi secrets that Klausener is keeping hidden deep beneath the Earth in an old wartime bunker.

Since everyone loves Nazi Zombies as much as I do, I am thrilled to talk about two upcoming Nazi Zombie movies that look more than promising. Exciting is an understatement, even.

You probably don’t remember Outpost from a few years back and there isn’t really any reason why you should. It was the very definition of average and told the tale of a gang of mercenary’s in a war-torn European country coming up against undead hordes of Nazis.
Despite the premise and the popularity of Nazi Zombies (probably because we get to kill them again) the film never came alive the way it should have done and was overshadowed by the much better Dead Snow around the same time. So understandably hopes were not high for a straight to DVD sequel to a film that was average at best and got a limited release in the first place. Even more ominous was the fact that the film has retained the original writer and director Steve Barker. Surprisingly Outpost: Black Sun manages to be a far better film than...

Premiering at Film4’s FrightFest festival on 25th August, we’ve been given three copies of Nazi zombie film Outpost II: Black Sun to give away on Blu-ray for the release on 27th August.
Following on from the original Nazi Zombie movie Outpost, Director and Writer Steve Barker and Rae Brunton return to resurrect the un-dead Nazi army from their bunkers once more as they attempt to dominate and paint/splatter the world red.
Outpost II: Black Sun follows investigative Lena (Catherine Steadman, Salmon Fishing In Yemen, The Inbetweeners) on a trail to find notorious war-criminal Klausener, a German scientist who in the closing stages of WW2 was working on a frightening new technology with the power to create an immortal Nazi Army. Her trail leads her to a war zone in Eastern Europe where a Nato task force has been deployed to stop the merciless and brutal killings from an unknown sinister enemy.

I can't lie, I never got around to checking out Steve Barker's Outpost, but after getting a look at the brand new trailer for the follow up (which has been sitting in limbo for some time now), Outpost II: Black Sun, I can guarantee I'll be seeking this one out immediately: The sequel looks absolutely vicious! Barker returns to write (alongside of Rae Brunton) and direct this immediate follow up, which features the talents of thespians Richard Coyle (Grabbers), Clive Russell (Sherlock Holmes), Michael Byrne (Braveheart), Catherine Steadman (Salmon Fishing in the Yemen) and Paul Birchard (The Dark Knight).
