Feature debutant writer-director Shane Atkinson toys with a hapless cast of schemers and low-lifes in this neo-noir, featuring a scene-stealing Dylan Baker as a vexed hitman
Sadsack husbands, missing suitcases, devious strippers, destabilising conversations with hitmen doubling up as metaphysical emissaries: this hyperactively structured crime thriller lines up many of the usual noir suspects, but loves messing with them. Often scenes end with left-field segues, such as when a cocky Pi suddenly finds his car towed by a couple of insolent cops. It’s not so much that the inhabitants of the Texan outpost of the title are caught in the genre’s meaningless existential whirlpool; rather, they’re being actively toyed with by some mischievous prankster deity (Aka debut director Shane Atkinson).

A darkly comic crime odyssey set in middle-of-nowhere America, writer-director Shane Atkinson’s Laroy, Texas wears its Coen brothers influence on its sleeve. And while it never quite reaches the hilarious heights or existential depths of the Coens’ finest work, it does offer similarly enjoyable mixture of the macabre and the absurd.
Atkinson’s film begins with a regular schmuck named Ray (John Magaro) being summoned to a greasy diner and handed an envelope full of photos that show his wife, Stacy-Lynn (Megan Stevenson), cheating on him. It’s devastating information to receive, and it doesn’t help that Ray is hearing it from a guy like Skip (Steve Zahn)—a self-styled private eye who dresses in a bolo tie and cowboy hat, and swears that he’s as much of a detective as any of the other boys on the force, even if he has spelled the word incorrectly on his business cards.

Shane Atkinson’s debut sets itself in the ever-so-small town of Laroy. Ray (John Magaro) is a man living the simple life, married to the local beauty-pageant queen and working at his family’s hardware store alongside his brother, Junior (Matthew Del Negro). He’s not unhappy, but not quite happy either. His existence depends on raising enough money for his wife Stacy-Lynn (Megan Stevenson) to open a salon. Her happiness results in his own happiness. Unfortunately, she’s not happy––at least not with Ray.
An unabashed quasi-homage to the Coen brothers, Laroy concerns a case of mistaken identity. Ray happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, and so when he’s assumed to be a hitman he obliges. As the confusion and dead bodies begin stacking up, Ray and his friend-turned-private eye Skip (Steve Zahn) must solve the plethora of crimes that lay in their wake.

When Ray Jepsen (John Magaro) pulls into a strip club parking to blow his brains out, his plans for the rest of the week are the furthest thing from his mind. But that’s one of the many, many downsides of suicide that nobody talks about — you create scheduling nightmares for everyone else in your life. And it’s particularly inconvenient when a local sleazebag erroneously believes that he hired you to carry out a murder that must be done tomorrow.
But that’s just life in Laroy, Texas. Shane Atkinson’s feature directorial debut takes place in a fictional town where residents only have three interests: extramarital affairs, blackmailing each other about extramarital affairs, and child beauty pageants. When an obstacle hinders someone’s ability to enjoy those treasured pastimes, murder is the most popular solution.
While suicide is never the answer, it’s easy to understand why Ray is so bummed.

Exclusive: Isaac Keys has been promoted to series regular and Michaela Watkins (Casual) and Seychelle Gabriel (Sleepy Hollow) have been tapped for recurring roles on the upcoming third season of Epix’s Get Shorty, from MGM Television. Production is underway in Vancouver for premiere this fall on Epix.
Key has recurred as Ed since the first season of the series, starring Chris O’Dowd and Ray Romano, appearing in a total of 18 episodes. Ed is Amara’s (Lidia Porto) bodyguard and a top lieutenant in her gang. He’s intimidating and built like a linebacker, but is intelligent and has a quiet confidence and dignity about him. Ed may not seem important, but he is perhaps the person Amara trusts most.
Get Shorty is based in part on Elmore Leonard’s 1990 bestselling novel — which also spawned Barry Sonnenfeld’s 1995 feature — and created for television by Davey Holmes. The series follows Miles Daly (O’Dowd), muscle for a Nevada crime ring who tries to become a movie producer in Hollywood with the help of a washed-up producer, Rick Moreweather (Romano), as a means to leave his criminal past behind.
In season two, Miles (O’Dowd) struggled to reconcile his ambitions as a filmmaker and a family man with his skill set as a career criminal. His progress in Hollywood is jeopardized when his washed-up producing partner Rick (Romano) agrees to wear a federal wire and begins a romantic relationship with dangerous crime boss Amara De Escalones (Porto).
Season three finds Miles embracing more ruthless methods as he settles scores in an attempt to continue climbing the Hollywood ladder.
Cast also includes series regulars Sean Bridgers, Carolyn Dodd, Goya Robles and Megan Stevenson. Steven Weber and Sarah Stiles are recurring guest stars.
Get Shorty season three is executive produced by Holmes and Adam Arkin. The series is produced by MGM Television and internationally distributed by MGM.
Keys is repped by Apa, Infinity Entertainment, and Ginsburg Daniels.

It’s always sunny in Hollywood… and it’s about to get real bloody there, too.
Epix is turning the Elmore Leonard crime novel Get Shorty, which became a 1995 John Travolta movie, into a TV series that premieres Sunday, Aug. 13 at 10/9c. And judging by the new trailer, which you can watch above, it puts a fresh spin on the original’s hitman-takes-l.A. premise.
Chris O’Dowd stars as killer-for-hire Miles Daly, who complains to his accomplice Louis (Rectify‘s Sean Bridgers) that this line of work isn’t great for his daughter: “If you had kids, would you...

Two episodes were provided prior to broadcast.
The upcoming television calendar is crowded with exciting series returning for their third seasons after long-bemoaned hiatuses, but Andy Daly’s Review is jumping the gun with its three-episode conclusion beginning March 16th on Comedy Central.
The masterful season 2, which concluded with the future of the series uncertain, had a closed yet somehow open ending with the beloved Forrest MacNeil (and his fans) puzzling over just how far the conspiracy governing the show’s entire nature went. The third and final season appears set to bring things to a conclusion that looks a little more like Return of the Jedi after last season’s wicked Empire Strikes Back, but the meta-confusion at the heart of Review can still be heard loud and clear.
While Forrest’s success in peering into life’s quandaries grew, he saw himself increasingly marginalized by co-workers, family, and...

Over the past couple weeks, Vulture published our critics’ year-end best-of lists. They included TV and film, comedy (sketches, specials, and podcasts), albums, video games, viral videos, and, appropriately, lists, among many other categories. Today we wrap up our year-end coverage with a collection of Vulture Insider picks for the best entertainment of 2015. Television: @purduette (Robin L. Barton): “The Knick: Compelling stories. Great visuals that capture the look and feel of old New York. And one of the best ensemble casts on TV.” @jmunney (Jeffrey Malone): “Review: Aj kicking Forrest in the balls should be on both Andy Daly and Megan Stevenson’s Emmy reels.” @crystalized (Crystal Covington): “Sense8: In an increasingly fractured real world, Netflix’s unique and moving series took just 12 episodes to memorably remind us what it is to be human. A crushingly romantic, thought-provoking, and stunning travelogue shot onsite around the world in four months,...

Megan Stevenson Visits Rachel Bilson’s Hart Of Dixie
Zoe Hart (Rachel Bilson) may have packed up and left New York City in Hart of Dixie, but that doesn’t mean she’s escaped it completely, evidenced by a surprise visit she’ll receive from a close friend played by Megan Stevenson. Stevenson is a bit of a newcomer to television. Her only other notable role is a guest appearance on an episode of $#*! My Dad Says, which I never bothered to watch so this makes her extremely new in my eyes.
According to Zap2it, she will be playing Gigi, who was Zoe’s best friend when she was in NYC. She gives no warning for her visit to Bluebell. One can only wonder why she decided to drop in. I think the most important thing to ponder is if Zoe will be excited to see Gigi. Everyday Zoe...

Meredith Monroe is on her way to Bluebell.
The former Dawson's Creek star, who has since appeared on episodes of Psych, NCIS and The Closer, will appear on at least one episode of Hart of Dixie later this year.
In what capacity? That must remain a secret for now, but TV Line teases the character as a "very important former Bluebell resident" with ties to already-established individuals in town. Our educated guess, based on our recent interview with Wilson Bethel?
Monroe will portray Wade's ex-wife.
Megan Stevenson has also been cast on Hart of Dixie. She'll come on board as Zoe's Bff from NYC.

As evidenced by this week's new episode, Zoe Hart is starting to make some real friends in Bluebell. We loved her interactions with Wade and Lavon on "Gumbo & Glory."
But Rachel Bilson's doctor is about to get paid a visit by her true best friend, as Zap2It reports, as Megan Stevenson has been cast as Gigi, Zoe's good pal from New York.

Who else will visit Zoe in Alabama later this season? Look for her mom to return, while Zoe's non-biological father will also be seen for the first time.
Moreover, look for Wes Brown to debut as a veterinarian and a love interest for Zoe. Because she definitely needs another one of those, doesn't she?...

Though she's officially a resident of Bluebell, Alabama after trouncing Brick Breeland in the gumbo cookoff, "Hart of Dixie's" Zoe Hart (Rachel Bilson) hasn't left New York City too far behind.
In an upcoming episode, we'll meet her friend Gigi from NYC -- and Zap2it has exclusively confirmed that Megan Stevenson will play the character, who comes to Bluebell for an unexpected visit.
Though she's a relative newcomer to the TV biz, fans may recognize Stevenson from a memorable guest appearance on an episode of last year's "$#*! My Dad Says," when she starred as Amy, who went on a double date with Henry, his famed Dad, and her aunt.
Zoe will certainly have plenty to deal with as the season continues. Executive producer Leila Gerstein confirms that we will see Zoe's mother again, and she'll likely also get a visit from her (non-biological) father this season as well.
