CNN is kicking off its comprehensive coverage of Election Day two full days before most Americans head to the polls.

On Thursday, the Warner Bros Discovery-owned cable network said its coverage of key U.S. Senate, U.S. House and White House competitions will start on Sunday, November 3 at 5 p.m. Eastern Time with a special programming block called “Countdown to Election Day.” The block will feature special weekend editions of “The Situation Room,” “Erin Burnett Outfront,” “Anderson Cooper 360,” “The Source with Kaitlan Collins, “CNN News Night: State of the Race with Abby Phillips” and “Laura Coates Live.”

“Election Day in America” will offer non-stop coverage of Election Day on Tuesday, November 5 at midnight Eastern Time. Most users of CNN.com will likely see no change in the experience they have each time they visit CNN.com, one of the biggest news sites in digital media. Heavy users, however, will be asked to consider starting a subscription to the site, which will begin to offer more content behind a paywall that executives at the Warner Bros. Discovery outlet hope will entice them to pay a little extra: $3.99 a month, or $29.99 a year. The company unveiled its subscription hopes in July.

Several prominent TV networks quickly reworked their Sunday schedules in the wake of an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, with broadcast networks standing up special morning coverage and cable-news outlets wholly reworking their normal weekend programming.

ABC and NBC broadcast special versions of “Good Morning America” and “Today,” while CBS pre-empted its usual offering — “CBS Sunday Morning” — in favor of a bespoke program anchored by John Dickerson. At NBC, Savannah Guthrie, who co-anchors weekday “Today,” joined Willie Geist, who typically leads a Sunday “Today” broadcast. ABC News, meanwhile, convened the three hosts of the weekday broadcast of “Good Morning America” — Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos and Michael Strahan — for an atypical weekend program.

President Joe Biden insisted Thursday he was the best qualified candidate to run against former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election in a back-and-forth with reporters that had him, at times, railing against the decisions of a conservative-led Supreme Court and explaining in great detail some of the nuances of U.S. foreign policy when it comes to China, Russia, Australia and South Korea.

Biden parried with journalists over his fitness for office even as he tried to make the case that the economy and national security had improved during his time in the White House. Discovery-backed news outlet will launch a new subscription product on CNN.com before the end of the year, according to a new memo from CNN Chairman and CEO Mark Thompson, and debut two new free ad-supported digital offerings, one based on CNN’s original series and productions, and another based on its Spanish-language service. The concern over President Joe Biden’s advanced age and cognitive abilities crystalized in the front half of the first presidential debate on Thursday, leading to panic among his supporters and several notable individuals to call for him to be replaced on the ticket.

Biden had multiple gaffes and stumbles as the debate began, trailing off at points and mixing up and missing words while completing his answers and replies to his opponent. This was sharply contrasted by Trump, who shouted about Biden’s perceived failures. While he got it together in the second half hour, the damage to Biden’s campaign was apparent.

Immediately after the debate, CNN reported that Biden’s incoherence was causing alarm bells to go off with top Democratic leaders who are now wondering what to do. The network’s chyron in the panelist’s post-debate analysis read: “Sources: Dems saying ‘we have a problem’ after Biden’s performance tonight.

Ahead of the first presidential debate, Donald Trump is taking a leaf out of his Election Day playbook and attempting to preemptively discredit a strong performance by President Joe Biden. The former president and his allies have spent the days leading up to the rematch between the 2020 rivals accusing Biden of everything from doping, to secretly using an earpiece, to the unsportsmanlike use of Mountain Dew.

There is no evidence that Biden receives performance enhancing drugs ahead of major public appearances, but Trump’s allies have picked up on the thread regardless.

Updated with CNN comment: CNN This Morning anchor Kasie Hunt cut off an interview with a Trump spokesperson Monday after she continually used a segment on debate prep to attack Hunt’s colleagues, Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.

During the interview, Trump campaign national press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the former president “is knowingly going in to a hostile environment on this very network, on CNN, with debate moderators who have made their opinions about him very well known over the past eight years and their biased coverage of him.”

She was offered a new role following the cancellation of CNN This Morning, but instead decided to leave, the network confirmed.

Harlow was co-host, along with Don Lemon and Kaitlan Collins, of CNN’s rebranded morning show, CNN This Morning, when it launched in November, 2022.

Lemon was ousted from the network the following April, and Collins left for her primetime show the following June. Phil Mattingly joined as co-host, but the show itself was dropped earlier this year in a retool of the network morning schedule. There still is a CNN This Morning with anchor Kasie Hunt, but it has an earlier start time of 5 a.m.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell condemned former Fox News’ host Tucker Carlson and Donald Trump after senators approved a $95 million foreign aid package that would send funds to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

Under the law, the United States will send $60 billion in support to Ukraine, $17 billion for Israel, $9 billion in humanitarian aid for Gaza and $8 billion to Taiwan.

“I think the demonization of Ukraine began by Tucker Carlson, who, in my opinion, ended up – or he should have been all along – which is interviewing Vladimir Putin,” McConnell told reporters during a news conference.

“And so, he had an enormous audience, which convinced a lot of rank-and-file Republicans that maybe this was a mistake,” he added. “I think the former president had sort of mixed reviews on it. We all felt the border was a complete disaster, myself included.”

Hallie Jackson is taking NBC’s venerable “Nightly News” to Washington D.C. for one night each week.

The NBC News senior Washington correspondent has been named the new anchor of NBC’s Sunday evening-news broadcast, taking the reins from Kate Snow. The Sunday broadcast will originate from the nation’s capital. Jackson’s first official day at the desk will be April 7. NBC News informed staffers of the decision Wednesday.

“Hallie is an exceptional journalist and an extraordinary broadcaster, representing the very best of NBC News. She is a natural fit to anchor our flagship newscast on Sundays,” said Janelle Rodriguez, NBC News’ executive vice president of programming, in a statement.

Phil Mattingly will serve as CNN’s chief domestic correspondent, taking on a new role after the network overhauled CNN This Morning.

Mattingly had co-anchored the morning program since last year, but the network shuffled its schedule last week, with CNN News Central taking over the 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Et timeslot, and CNN This Morning moving to 5 a.m. Et with Kasie Hunt as anchor. The network has not yet announced a new role for Poppy Harlow, who had co-anchored CNN This Morning since its debut in November 2022.

Updated: CNN is dropping the latest iteration of CNN This Morning as part of a shake-up of its morning lineup.

Poppy Harlow and Phil Mattingly have anchored the show since August, after several lineup changes since its debut in the fall of 2022. Kasie Hunt’s 5 a.m. Et show, known as Early Start, will expand an hour and take on the CNN This Morning title.

Changes will go into effect later this month.

CNN News Central, meanwhile, will move to 7 a.m. Et and run until 10 a.m. Et, with anchors John Berman, Kate Bolduan and Sara Sidner.

Jim Acosta, who has anchored a weekend show, will anchor CNN Newsroom at 10 a.m. Et and Pamela Brown will anchor an 11 a.m. Et hour starting in the spring. Wolf Blitzer will anchor the hour until she returns from maternity leave. Brown’s show will be called The Bulletin with Pamela Brown.

CNN has told staff it is moving its much-hyped Chris Licht-era morning show, This Morning, from New York to its Atlanta headquarters, two people familiar with the matter have told The Hollywood Reporter.

The show’s 50-person team have been told they can reapply for jobs within the network, according to the people familiar. Phil Mattingly and Poppy Harlow will be moving to new roles, per sources.

CNN will move up its News Central show, hosted by John Berman, Sara Sidner and Kate Bolduan, to help fill the time slot. Early Start host Kasie Hunt will anchor from 5 a.m.-7 a.m. Et, News Central moves from 7 a.m.-10 a.m. and Jim Acosta signs on at 10 a.m. Et.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is set to appear on the presidential ballot in Utah after having formally filed with the state’s elections office on January 3.

Utah is the first state the Kennedy campaign succeeded in putting his name on the ballot. This state has also been a primary focus of the campaign in recent weeks as it helps to develop the plan to put Kennedy on the ballot in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

Kennedy showed gratitude to the campaign staff and volunteers after filing his petition at the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake City. “So you have gained notoriety for your skepticism about vaccines,” CNN anchor Kasie Hunt told Kennedy during a recent interview.

At least one of the big companies that distribute CNN via cable or satellite is unnerved by how closely the company’s new live-streaming service looks like its TV network.

Big satellite distributor DirecTV has let executives at Warner Bros. Discovery know via letter that its executives believe the similarities between the two products violate the carriage contract between the two companies, according to a person familiar with the matter. The new CNN streaming service, CNN Max, just launched last week and includes many of programs that run on linear CNN, including “CNN This Morning,” “The Lead With Jake Tapper” and “Anderson Cooper 360.”

The New York Times previously reported the contretemps between DirecTV and Warner Bros. Discovery.

“Wbd maintains strong and meaningful relationships with our affiliate partners. Our partners are aware of and understand our rationale with Max, which is to reach new audiences,” Warner Bros. Discovery said in a statement.

All customers of Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming platform can now watch live news content from CNN.

Max is now officially in the news streaming business. Warner Bros. Discovery has launched its new CNN Max content hub on Max, meaning subscribers of the Max with Ads, Max Ad-Free and Ultimate Max Ad-Free plans all get live news, breaking updates, and much more. Wbd first announced it was bringing live news from CNN to Max in August.

“We have the broadest and highest quality entertainment offering, and now will include world-leading news as a meaningful addition for all Max subscribers, at no extra charge,” Wbd’s head of streaming J.B. Perrette said. “CNN Max is differentiated by having 24/7 news at its core from CNN, the leading global news organization, and being available on a scaled streaming service in the U.S., which has a significantly younger and additive audience compared to traditional TV.

The open beta for CNN Max, Warner Bros. Discovery’s 24/7 streaming news offering, officially launched to Max subscribers on Wednesday, and largely mirrors the company’s linear TV lineup.

CNN ventured back into streaming on Wednesday with the launch of CNN Max, a service that diverges from its past efforts in the way that it mirrors so much of the schedule of the linear network.

Primetime shows like Erin Burnett OutFront, Anderson Cooper 360 and The Source With Kaitlan Collins, as well as morning programming including Early Start with Kasie Hunt and CNN This Morning are on the scheduled unveiled on Wednesday. Other shows come from CNN International, including State of the Race with Kasie Hunt, which is debuting on Wednesday as well, and One World, with Bianna Golodryga joining Zain Asher as anchor. Amanpour also is part of the early afternoon schedule.

CNN Max, which debuted Wednesday, has been touted as a way to get news giant’s content out to a increasing number of cord-cutters and consumers who no longer view cable as their primary way to get video entertainment and information. In a change to its morning show, Fox News is adding Lawrence Jones as a co-anchor of Fox & Friends, where he will join longtime hosts Steve Doocy, Brian Kilmeade and Ainsley Earhardt on weekday mornings.

Jones will also continue in his role as the program’s enterprise reporter. His weekend show Lawrence Jones Cross Country will end with his new promotion, with Kilmeade taking over the 9 p.m. Saturday time slot.

Jim Sciutto, Bianna Golodryga, Rahel Solomon and Christiane Amanpour are among the CNN journalists who have been tapped to take part in the effort, according to two of these people.

CNN and Max could make an announcement about the project as soon as Thursday, according to these people, and would likely provide greater detail. A spokeswoman for CNN declined to comment and a spokesman for Max declined to comment.

CNN has announced a dramatic shake-up of its programming schedule, including new anchors for the morning, daytime, primetime, and weekend shows. Inside Politics Sunday host Abby Phillip will anchor the news network’s 10 pm hour on weekdays, with chief legal analyst Laura Coates anchoring the 11 pm slot. The morning show’s long-time co-host Kaitlan Collins also exited the program to host the network’s 9 pm hour, replacing Chris Cuomo, who was fired in 2021 amid an inquiry into whether he aided his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Phil Mattingly, CNN’s chief White House correspondent, will now co-host CNN This Morning alongside the show’s long-time anchor Poppy Harlow.

Pamela Brown, Kasie Hunt, Victor Blackwell and Manu Raju are among the journalists who will have new solo-anchored hours. Allisyn Camerota, who has been holding down late nights for the past few months, will take up longer form reporting and will contribute to the Sunday documentary program “The Whole Story,” CNN said Monday.

The version of “CNN Tonight” that Tapper will lead through the midterm elections aims to provide “thoughtful, no-bulls—t context” around some of the biggest stories in the news cycle, according to a person familiar with the matter, and won’t tether the journalist to the CNN programs for which he is known best, “The Lead” and “State of the Union.” Viewers should expect Tapper to focus on fewer stories and to spend more time digging into them, and to hold forth with newsmakers and heads of state as well as authors, actors and figures of popular culture.
