CNN on Tuesday morning will take its second swing at trying to boost revenue from streaming video and digital content.
Most users of CNN.com will likely see no change in the experience they have each time they visit CNN.com, one of the biggest news sites in digital media. Heavy users, however, will be asked to consider starting a subscription to the site, which will begin to offer more content behind a paywall that executives at the Warner Bros. Discovery outlet hope will entice them to pay a little extra: $3.99 a month, or $29.99 a year. The company unveiled its subscription hopes in July.
“The hope is that these are our first, very early steps to building a direct-to-consumer business,” Alex MacCallum, executive vice president of digital products and services for CNN Worldwide, said during an interview. “We want this to be a very robust business line that complements the affiliate...

Kasie Hunt has long been known for her work on the political beat, but in days to come she hopes people will think of her for news about culture or sports, maybe the weather. When the news cycle delivers something weird or surprising, the CNN early-morning anchor says she is even “willing to make faces on the air.”
Cable’s A.M. news shows have thrived in recent years by focusing relentlessly on politics, Now CNN and Hunt want to scramble viewers’ perceptions by widening the network’s aperture. “We want to be there for them even when politics is not the lead,” says Hunt during a recent interview.
People who tuned in to Monday’s “CNN This Morning,” the program Hunt anchors between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. — now with her name in the title — may have noticed a few new elements on screen, particularly starting at 6. New blue-and-yellow...

Viewers of the Paris Olympics will expect to see plenty of Simone Biles, Katie Ledecky, Sha’Carri Richardson and LeBron James when they tune into NBC later this week to watch the athletic extravaganza. They may also get glimmers of another familiar visage: Hoda Kotb.
NBC plans to feature a “Hoda-cam” as part of its efforts to cover the 2024 Games. Viewers may see shots of Kotb watching the U.S. women’s gymnastics team — long one of her favorites — and interacting with the families of Olympic hopefuls.
The “Today” co-anchor learned about the new feature last week, at the same time as her colleagues Savannah Guthrie, Craig Melvin and Al Roker — as well as a reporter from Variety who was meeting with the quartet and “Today” producers to learn about the morning-news mainstay’s plans for covering the 2024 Olympics after the group had completed a photo shoot for a “digital cover...

Several prominent TV networks quickly reworked their Sunday schedules in the wake of an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, with broadcast networks standing up special morning coverage and cable-news outlets wholly reworking their normal weekend programming.
ABC and NBC broadcast special versions of “Good Morning America” and “Today,” while CBS pre-empted its usual offering — “CBS Sunday Morning” — in favor of a bespoke program anchored by John Dickerson. At NBC, Savannah Guthrie, who co-anchors weekday “Today,” joined Willie Geist, who typically leads a Sunday “Today” broadcast. ABC News, meanwhile, convened the three hosts of the weekday broadcast of “Good Morning America” — Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos and Michael Strahan — for an atypical weekend program.
Cable-news networks also revamped their normal schedules. Fox News Channel had already planned a special Sunday schedule in advance of the start of this week’s Republican National Convention, but aired a bespoke evening program Saturday...

President Joe Biden insisted Thursday he was the best qualified candidate to run against former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election in a back-and-forth with reporters that had him, at times, railing against the decisions of a conservative-led Supreme Court and explaining in great detail some of the nuances of U.S. foreign policy when it comes to China, Russia, Australia and South Korea.
Biden parried with journalists over his fitness for office even as he tried to make the case that the economy and national security had improved during his time in the White House. But his efforts were hampered somewhat by a gaffe in which he referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as “Vice President Trump,” and the ensuing attention to that detail shows just how much the nation has been concerned about his age and fitness in the aftermath of a poor showing at a presidential debate two weeks ago.

CNN is finally gearing up to compete more aggressively in the digital future, where rivals have already staked out ground.
The Warner Bros. Discovery-backed news outlet will launch a new subscription product on CNN.com before the end of the year, according to a new memo from CNN Chairman and CEO Mark Thompson, and debut two new free ad-supported digital offerings, one based on CNN’s original series and productions, and another based on its Spanish-language service. The moves come amid an overhaul of CNN’s newsroom that will result in the elimination of 100 positions.
“We plan to take the journalistic firepower, user-experience and commercial potential of CNN Digital to the next level with strategic commitment, significant fresh investment, an injection of specialist expertise and plenty of creativity and experimentation,’” said Thompson, who didn’t offer granular details about the new subscription concept. “We will develop new digital products with...

The concern over President Joe Biden’s advanced age and cognitive abilities crystalized in the front half of the first presidential debate on Thursday, leading to panic among his supporters and several notable individuals to call for him to be replaced on the ticket.
Biden had multiple gaffes and stumbles as the debate began, trailing off at points and mixing up and missing words while completing his answers and replies to his opponent. This was sharply contrasted by Trump, who shouted about Biden’s perceived failures. While he got it together in the second half hour, the damage to Biden’s campaign was apparent.
Immediately after the debate, CNN reported that Biden’s incoherence was causing alarm bells to go off with top Democratic leaders who are now wondering what to do. The network’s chyron in the panelist’s post-debate analysis read: “Sources: Dems saying ‘we have a problem’ after Biden’s performance tonight.

Ahead of the first presidential debate, Donald Trump is taking a leaf out of his Election Day playbook and attempting to preemptively discredit a strong performance by President Joe Biden. The former president and his allies have spent the days leading up to the rematch between the 2020 rivals accusing Biden of everything from doping, to secretly using an earpiece, to the unsportsmanlike use of Mountain Dew.
There is no evidence that Biden receives performance enhancing drugs ahead of major public appearances, but Trump’s allies have picked up on the thread regardless.

Updated with CNN comment: CNN This Morning anchor Kasie Hunt cut off an interview with a Trump spokesperson Monday after she continually used a segment on debate prep to attack Hunt’s colleagues, Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.
During the interview, Trump campaign national press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the former president “is knowingly going in to a hostile environment on this very network, on CNN, with debate moderators who have made their opinions about him very well known over the past eight years and their biased coverage of him.”
Hunt then said that Tapper and Bash “have acquitted themselves as professionals as they have covered campaigns and interviewed candidates from all sides of the aisle.” She then noted that “if you talk to analysts or previous debates … if you are attacking the moderators, you are usually losing.”

With the first presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump taking place live on CNN this Thursday, June 27, political surrogates and spokespeople have been making the media rounds this week to promote their candidates’ positions and posturing in advance. One such got shut down in dramatic fashion Monday (June 24) morning when Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt repeatedly attacked the moderators, CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, as being “biased” against Trump, causing CNN This Morning anchor Kasie Hunt to cut her interview short. The View host Whoopi Goldberg introduced a clip of the exchange, which included Hunt insisting the two “have acquitted themselves as professionals as they have covered campaigns and interviewed candidates from all sides of the aisle,” and adding, “If you are attacking the moderators, you are usually losing.” Goldberg, for one, was positively giddy over the exchange when reviewing it in the “Hot Topics” segment of Monday’s episode,...

Poppy Harlow, who has been with CNN since 2008, is departing the network. Harlow announced her decision in a memo to colleagues.
She was offered a new role following the cancellation of CNN This Morning, but instead decided to leave, the network confirmed.
Harlow was co-host, along with Don Lemon and Kaitlan Collins, of CNN’s rebranded morning show, CNN This Morning, when it launched in November, 2022.
Lemon was ousted from the network the following April, and Collins left for her primetime show the following June. Phil Mattingly joined as co-host, but the show itself was dropped earlier this year in a retool of the network morning schedule. There still is a CNN This Morning with anchor Kasie Hunt, but it has an earlier start time of 5 a.m.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell condemned former Fox News’ host Tucker Carlson and Donald Trump after senators approved a $95 million foreign aid package that would send funds to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.
Under the law, the United States will send $60 billion in support to Ukraine, $17 billion for Israel, $9 billion in humanitarian aid for Gaza and $8 billion to Taiwan.
“I think the demonization of Ukraine began by Tucker Carlson, who, in my opinion, ended up – or he should have been all along – which is interviewing Vladimir Putin,” McConnell told reporters during a news conference.
“And so, he had an enormous audience, which convinced a lot of rank-and-file Republicans that maybe this was a mistake,” he added. “I think the former president had sort of mixed reviews on it. We all felt the border was a complete disaster, myself included.”
The Senate minority leader went on to talk about the negotiation phases.

CNN anchor Kate Bolduan got an interesting new job in 2022 when she was named the anchor of “5 Things,” a quick-hit open-the-day summary of top stories that was made available for streaming audiences. Two years later, she appears poised to get it again.
Bolduan will lead a test run of “5 Things” starting Monday on CNN Max, the live-streamed news service available on Max, the streaming venue backed by corporate parent Warner Bros. Discovery. The program’s reappearance after a long absence marks the latest chapter in a concept that many at the news outlet seem to love, but just can’t figure out how to transform into a sustainable video franchise. CNN already operates a podcast and newsletter tied to the format.
CNN has reason to try “5 Things” anew. It was one of the more popular offerings made available on CNN+, an ambitious but short-lived subscription-based streaming service launched in 2022 in...

A small contingent of journalists gathered near the Canadian border earlier this morning to watch as Dixville Notch, Nh, continued its tradition of casting the first ballots on an election day.

Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.
That said, networks see the caucuses as the kickoff of what is hoped a spike in viewer interest in the presidential contest, as was seen in 2020 and 2016. All of the broadcast networks are planning for ongoing coverage of...

Utah is the first state the Kennedy campaign succeeded in putting his name on the ballot. This state has also been a primary focus of the campaign in recent weeks as it helps to develop the plan to put Kennedy on the ballot in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.
Kennedy showed gratitude to the campaign staff and volunteers after filing his petition at the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake City. He thanked them for helping gather the 1,000 signatures necessary for independent candidates to file for ballot access in Utah. At the end of December 2023, the Salt Lake County Clerk’s office confirmed the campaign’s signatures.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. once again spread unfounded claims regarding the Covid-19 and the vaccine.
“So you have gained notoriety for your skepticism about vaccines,” CNN anchor Kasie Hunt told Kennedy during a recent interview.
“And over the summer, in an interview, you said, quote, ‘There’s no vaccine that is, you know, safe and effective.’ Do you still believe that?” she asked.
“I never said –,” Kennedy stated before Hunt cut him off.
“So, stop me, we have the clip. Please play the clip,” Hunt declared.
“Play the whole clip,” Kennedy requested.
Hunt then played the clip of him and Lex Fridman talking during a recorded interview on July 5.
Fridman and Kennedy discussed that the media has been slamming Rfk Jr. for being anti-vaccine. Kennedy then claimed that he is not anti-vaccine but is instead “pro-safe vaccine.”
“Difficult question. Can you name any vaccines that you think are good?” Fridman asked.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an independent presidential candidate, found himself on the defensive as he addressed allegations of antisemitism when he perpetuated baseless claims about Covid-19 and vaccines.
In an interview with CNN’s Kasie Hunt, Kennedy, a vocal opponent of Covid-19 vaccines and public health measures meant to curb the virus’s spread, tried to refute accusations that his previous remarks that linked Covid-19 to Jewish ancestry were antisemitic.
In July, Kennedy stated that Covid-19 was “ethnically targeted” to spare Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese individuals. While he acknowledged that some people might have been “disturbed” by his comments, Kennedy maintained that they were not antisemitic. He explained his hesitation to discuss the issue publicly and cited concerns that antisemitic individuals might exploit the information.
Kennedy also defended his remarks from 2022, in which he compared Covid-19 lockdowns to Nazi Germany and suggested that one could flee to Switzerland. At the time,...

At least one of the big companies that distribute CNN via cable or satellite is unnerved by how closely the company’s new live-streaming service looks like its TV network.
Big satellite distributor DirecTV has let executives at Warner Bros. Discovery know via letter that its executives believe the similarities between the two products violate the carriage contract between the two companies, according to a person familiar with the matter. The new CNN streaming service, CNN Max, just launched last week and includes many of programs that run on linear CNN, including “CNN This Morning,” “The Lead With Jake Tapper” and “Anderson Cooper 360.”
The New York Times previously reported the contretemps between DirecTV and Warner Bros. Discovery.
“Wbd maintains strong and meaningful relationships with our affiliate partners. Our partners are aware of and understand our rationale with Max, which is to reach new audiences,” Warner Bros. Discovery said in a statement.

CNN’s new streaming product is set to look an awful lot like its familiar cable network.
CNN Max, which debuted Wednesday, has been touted as a way to get news giant’s content out to a increasing number of cord-cutters and consumers who no longer view cable as their primary way to get video entertainment and information. And parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, in the belief, perhaps, that a streaming subscription is just as good as one to a cable or satellite service, is making the bulk of its linear lineup available to the broadband crowd.
The weekday schedule of CNN Max features several new hours led by anchors such as Jim Acosta, Fredricka Whitfield, Rahel Solomon and Jim Scuitto. But a significant chunk of the service is built on CNN’s linear morning, late-afternoon and primetime schedule. When all is said and done, Max viewers will be able...

CNN, whose brief foray into subscription streaming was snuffed out shortly after the close of the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger in April 2022, is officially getting real estate on Max.
A new offering, CNN Max, will be added to the streaming service in what Warner Bros. Discovery called an “open beta” on September 27. It will consist of a 24/7 stream pulled from the news network’s U.S. and international feeds, with a sprinkling of original fare, with user feedback welcomed. For many reasons, some having to do with contracts with pay-tv operators, it won’t be a full-over-the top version of linear CNN, and certain talent and new shows like the new 9 p.m. hour hosted by Kaitlan Collins will not be in the mix.
Wbd CEO David Zaslav hinted at the new venture during the company’s quarterly earnings call several weeks ago, saying news and sports make SVOD platforms “come alive.

CNN has announced a dramatic shake-up of its programming schedule, including new anchors for the morning, daytime, primetime, and weekend shows. Inside Politics Sunday host Abby Phillip will anchor the news network’s 10 pm hour on weekdays, with chief legal analyst Laura Coates anchoring the 11 pm slot. Elsewhere, chief national affairs analyst Kasie Hunt will anchor Early Start following the departure of the show’s long-time host Christine Romans last month. CNN This Morning is also receiving a makeover following the recent controversy that saw Don Lemon fired after making sexist remarks. The morning show’s long-time co-host Kaitlan Collins also exited the program to host the network’s 9 pm hour, replacing Chris Cuomo, who was fired in 2021 amid an inquiry into whether he aided his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Phil Mattingly, CNN’s chief White House correspondent, will now co-host CNN This Morning alongside the show’s long-time anchor Poppy Harlow.

The new program, which will be based in New York and is slated to debut Monday, July 10, at 9 p.m. eastern, is a new hour built around up-and-coming anchor Kaitlan Collins, who has, in the space of just a few years, vaulted from White House correspondent to morning co-anchor to primetime personality. Collins has been leading CNN’s 9 p.m. hour over the past few weeks, but under a catch-all rubric of “CNN Primetime,” which also encompassed town-hall specials and deep-dive interviews with newsmakers led by others.
CNN announced the new program Tuesday night during its Fourth of July coverage and musical celebration, which typically attract a broader audience than its usual weekday schedule.

After spending months keeping CNN from expanding into streaming, parent company Warner Bros. Discovery appears to have changed its mind.
Warner Bros. Discovery is exploring ways to get more CNN programing on to its Max streaming service, according to a person familiar with the matter, looking at the news outlet’s broader portfolio to see what content might work. Executives will have to navigate agreements with CNN’s traditional distributors that often require cable and satellite companies get first access to CNN’s live broadcasts.
Yet CNN’s rivals have grappled with similar obstacles and found ways to repurpose the news and opinion shows they run. The Fox Nation streaming outlet runs Fox News Channel’s opinion programs a day later. Fox News in 2020 unveiled a new international service that puts its programs in countries such as Mexico and Spain. Msbnc in March of last year unveiled a plan to offer episodes of “Morning Joe,...

CNN may be getting ready to take a new swing at fixing its long-running 9 p.m. problem.
CNN is getting ready to launch a new show in that hour called “CNN Primetime,” which is described with a logline that says, “Join CNN’s top anchors for special events and unique conversations about the issues that matter the most.”
Both the show title and the programming descriptions are on display in interactive schedules that subscribers to cable and satellite services can call up to examine programming options. On Thursday, CNN is set to offer a “CNN Town Hall.” Another entry describes a one on one interview between a newsmaker and anchor Don Lemon. A person familiar with the matter says the details were inadvertently uploaded to cable systems and that only the town hall is a go for next week. A launch of “CNN Primetime” may not take place for some time,...

The next star anchor of CNN may not even work there yet.
Executives at the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed news outlet are considering the prospect of hiring a host from outside the network’s roster of correspondents to lead at least an hour in primetime, according to a person familiar with the matter. The plan surfaces after CNN CEO Chris Licht told a town-hall assemblage of CNN staffers Tuesday in New York that he intended to turn his focus to CNN’s 9 p.m. hour after debuting a new morning program led by Don Lemon, Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins.
CNN declined to make executives available for comment.
While there is no guarantee the idea will come to fruition, its existence suggests the network is mulling a return to a previous era. CNN has long worked with hosts such as Larry King or Piers Morgan, who typically had little to do with the CNN newsroom,...

Broadcast networks are devoting their primetime hours to coverage of next week’s midterm results, underscoring the stakes and interest in this year’s election. But the night is also a bit of a prelude to 2024, as all of the news divisions and cable news outlets hope that audiences will return for another momentous presidential election.

When Jake Tapper launches his new primetime show on CNN Tuesday at 9 p.m., he will have to turn from the intensely serious (an interview with President Joe Biden) to the sublime (a chat with actor Dwayne Johnson). It will be just one of many pivots the anchor will have to make in days to come.
The version of “CNN Tonight” that Tapper will lead through the midterm elections aims to provide “thoughtful, no-bulls—t context” around some of the biggest stories in the news cycle, according to a person familiar with the matter, and won’t tether the journalist to the CNN programs for which he is known best, “The Lead” and “State of the Union.” Viewers should expect Tapper to focus on fewer stories and to spend more time digging into them, and to hold forth with newsmakers and heads of state as well as authors, actors and figures of popular culture.

CNN is tweaking its programming recipe for noted food author Alison Roman.
After unveiling an alliance with the culinary influencer that would have put a new original series with her at the center on streaming hub CNN+, the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet will launch a program from her on its flagship cable outlet this fall.
A four-episode series, “(More Than) A Cooking Show,” featuring Roman learning about ingredients, traveling, and trying recipes, will debut on CNN in the fall. The series is produced by Zero Point Zero Productions, the company that was to have created her CNN+ program, and its announcement suggests that CNN is continuing to work to find roosts for several of the concepts it created for the broadband service. CNN+ was quickly scuttled after its launch by a corporate parent eager to cut costs and place CNN content in other parts of its streaming portfolio.
