Casting is such a crucial component to crafting a great film that last year the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rightly deemed the profession worthy of Oscar recognition. There will now be a Best Casting trophy handed out every March, which has avid Oscar viewers wondering what films would've won the top prize each year prior to 2025 –- and whether that winner would've had to be in the running for Best Picture. Would this have been a way to make sure star-studded romps like "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World," "Casino Royale," or "The Cannonball Run" were represented on Hollywood's biggest night? Would a critical misfire like "Heartburn" have been acknowledged just for bringing together the heavyweight acting duo of Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep for the first time? Could films like "The Outsiders" or "Stand by Me" (which should've been a Best Picture contender) have taken...

The curse of success is a fascinating thing in Hollywood. It has always been a "What have you done for me lately?" business. In the case of director Andy Muschietti, in the fall of 2017, he delivered Warner Bros. the biggest horror movie of all time when he nailed an adaptation of Stephen King's much-beloved novel "It." While King's novel had previously been adapted as a TV miniseries in the '90s, Muschietti's take on the material resonated with audiences in a way that nobody could have predicted. The great news for all involved is that King's novel is an unwieldy beast that no one movie could possibly hope to contain.

Netflix released a lot of original films in 2022, from animation to prestige fare to especially young adult book adaptations. There was no shortage of feel-good and transporting films to immerse viewers into entire universes, and even a bona fide box office success in the form of Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” follow-up “Glass Onion.” Below, we’ve singled out some of our favorites.
Behold, the best Netflix original movies of 2022, listed in order of release.

Plot: After suffering a near-death experience as a young girl, Darby Harper gains the ability to see dead people. As a result, she becomes introverted and shut off from her high school peers and prefers to spend time counseling lonely spirits who have unfinished business on earth. But all that changes when Capri, the Queen Bee of the school’s most exclusive clique, unexpectedly dies in a freak hair straightening accident, resulting in the obvious cancellation of her upcoming “Sweet 17.” Capri, however, pleads with Darby from the other side to intervene and convince Capri’s friends to proceed with the party as planned. In order to appease the wrath of the undead diva, Darby must emerge from her self-imposed exile and reinvent herself — which along the way allows her to find new joy back in the land of the living.

In “Darby and the Dead,” the promise of its premise outweighs the delivered product. Director Silas Howard demonstrates his deft capabilities bringing an energetic irreverence and aesthetic buoyancy to the unfurling feature, which is centered on a tormented teen cajoled into helping a recently deceased mean girl get a new life in the afterlife. Unfortunately, despite the film’s undeniable charms and strong lead performances, the fabric it weaves frays as it wears on, undone by clunky character development, trite sentimentality and rushed resolutions.
High schooler Darby Harper (Riele Downs) sees dead people. But unlike Haley Joel Osment’s “Sixth Sense” character, she knows exactly how to help the deceased with their unfinished business. She’s turned it into a full-fledged job, paid only in gratitude, playing spiritual counselor to those she affectionately calls “Deados” who’ve passed away and are stuck in limbo. This special gift was bestowed on...

For a movie about a teen who communicates with ghosts, “Darby and the Dead” is awfully dispiriting. Writer Becca Greene (“Good Vibes”) and director Silas Howard (“Dickinson”) casually kill off Darby Harper’s mother in the first minute, spend most of the movie requiring Darby (Riele Downs) to change her entire personality, and then proceed to punish her for following the path they’ve set.
Though the film seems designed to exploit a new generation’s affection for movies like “Clueless,” “Mean Girls,” “Bring it On” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” the filmmakers have missed the messages of those beloved classics altogether. Plus, there’s so much YA streaming content these days that lazily patched-together projects feel, well, extra lazy.
Even Downs, so appealing on Nickelodeon’s “Henry Danger,” can’t fight the forces of this soulless script (which was based on a potentially promising story idea by Wenonah Wilms). As Darby,...

"It" is one of Stephen King's most beloved novels. The horror story has terrified readers since it debuted in 1986. "It" features some of the most disturbing moments that King has ever created, and that's no small statement. While the story itself is horrifying, "It" explores the lasting impact of childhood trauma. The coming-of-age elements make "It" one of King's most heartfelt stories. Children and adults can feel inspired by seeing the Losers' Club overcome their fears.
Given the book's popularity, a film adaptation was nearly guaranteed. "It" was first adapted as a two-part miniseries in 1990, starring Tim Curry as Pennywise the Clown. The first episode showed the youthful adventures of the Losers' Club, and the second episode flashed forward to their time as adults. While there is a lot of nostalgia for the 1990 "It," the miniseries doesn't quite capture all the nuances that made the novel so beloved.

Stephen King's name is synonymous with horror. Netflix’s “Purple Hearts,” directed by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, has entered the streamer’s Most Popular Films List, ranking at seventh.
Starring Sofia Carson and Nicholas Galitzine, the movie tells the story of Cassie Salazar (Carson) and Luke Morrow (Galitzine), who find themselves in a tricky situation when they get married purely for the financial benefits that come with their union. Luke is about to deploy for The Marines when he meets Cassie, an aspiring musician with very liberal views. First they clash in an argument over their political leanings, but when Cassie asks an old friend of hers to get married so that she can actually afford the insulin she needs in order to live for diabetes, Luke steps in when Frankie (Chosen Jacobs) declines Cassie’s offer.

“Alone Together” was originally reviewed out of the 2022 Tribeca Festival.
Katie Holmes turns out to be one of the best chroniclers of the Covid-19 lockdown to date: Her sophomore feature as a director, “Alone Together” (which she also wrote), captures many vivid details on the subject overlooked by even documentaries.
But Holmes’ artistic ambitions aren’t lofty, as she seems to have set her sights on Lifetime movie rather than Oscar bait.
The opening scenes are stunning. On March 15, 2020, as news alerts flood the airwaves, June (Holmes) ventures outside her building, on her way to an Airbnb upstate booked by her boyfriend, John (Derek Luke), to wait out the pandemic. She’s been told by her employer it should all blow over in two weeks. (Ha!)

Perhaps, one day, somebody will make a film in which a hastily arranged marriage of convenience between two virtual strangers doesn’t blossom into real love, and instead more tensely culminates in mutual acrimony and cathartic divorce. Until then, those inclined can moon over drippy, dopey fantasies like “Purple Hearts,” an opposites-attract romance that — give or take an Iraq War backdrop and some current social-justice talking points — could have been made at any point in the last 70-odd years. Principally a vehicle for Disney-reared singer-actor Sofia Carson, as an independent-minded Latina singer-songwriter who marries a conservative Marine for insurance benefits, only for military tragedy to bring them closer together, this glossy but gloopy Netflix original is primarily out to serve its leading lady’s legions of fans, some of them perhaps young enough not to have seen it all before.

"I love the way you look at him – just, so, real." Is it, though?? Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a very cheesy romance titled Purple Hearts, which plays as a jingoistic love story about a marine and his wife. In spite of their many differences, Cassie, a struggling singer-songwriter, and Luke, a troubled marine, agree to marry solely for the military benefits (mainly the health insurance?). But when tragedy strikes, the line between real and pretend begins to blur. And they must attempt to see if they really do love each other or not. The film stars Sofia Carson as Cassie and Nicholas Galitzine as Luke, with Chosen Jacobs, Kat Cunning, Linden Ashby, Anthony Ippolito, John Harlan Kim, Sarah Rich, & Scott Deckert. This looks as bad as the Hallmark movies that we get every year, with some seriously sappy romance with nothing unique or compelling about the story either.

The Cinderella fairytale gets a hip hop revision in the new Disney+ film, Sneakerella starring Chosen Jacobs as the gender-swapped Cinderella, John Salley as the modern-day King, Lexi Underwood as the princess and Juan Chioran as the godfather figure. The glass slipper in this modern take is the sneaker designed by El (Jacobs), and he can read into someone's personality by their shoes. So CineMovie asked the actors to describe their ideal kicks.

Disney+‘s Sneakerella is a fresh new take on the classic Cinderella story. Premiering Friday, May 13 on the streaming service, the movie musical stars Chosen Jacobs as El and Lexi Underwood as Kira King, aka “Cinderella” and “the prince.” Sneakerella centers on El, a passionate sneakerhead from Queens, New York who dreams of being the next great sneaker designer. El works as a stock boy in a shoe store that once belonged to his late mother. He keeps his artistic talent hidden from his overburdened stepfather and mean-spirited stepbrothers. But one day, El meets Kira, the fiercely independent daughter of the fictional sneaker mogul and ex-nba star Darius King (played by real-life former NBA player John Salley), and everything changes. “With a little nudge from his best friend and a sprinkle of Fairy Godfather magic, El finds the courage to use his talent to pursue his dream of becoming a...

In the frequently picked-over corpse of author Charles Perrault’s classic story “Cinderella,” centered on a servant girl who rises from obscurity after falling in love with a prince, lie such themes as perseverance, hope and the value of being a dreamer. These are the cornerstone principles of the Disney corporation, founded by a fellow dreamer who, similar to the plucky protagonist in the fairy tale, made a wish and saw it come true. Though the studio has plundered these riches before with the likes of the popular 1997 TV movie musical and 2015’s lavish live-action feature, Disney+ original “Sneakerella” amounts to a modernized, more tween-oriented telling. Director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum’s re-sole of the story, which sees a talented teen fantasizing about designing sneakers for sports royalty, delivers a poignant take on the 1950s animated film it partially cannibalizes.

American Idol continued its rich tradition of the iconic “Disney Night.” The Top 10 found inspiration for their songs by venturing through Disneyland and connecting with mentor Derek Hough. The top-notch entertainer and Vegas headliner filled in for the previously announced Ben Platt. Rhenzy Feliz and Adassa kicked off the proceedings alongside the Idol hopefuls on Encanto’s earworm “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.” The show saw special guests including Animal and Miss Piggy from The Muppets, Sneakarella’s Chosen Jacobs, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie helped Katy Perry to her judging chair as she went full Ariel from The Little Mermaid, fins and all. Unfortunately, Katy literally fell off her seat at the start. Live TV is fun. What wasn’t fun? Seeing three more say goodbye (or is it see you real soon). Hold on to those mouse ears. Let’s break down how the magical night unfolded.
