Originally Hedy Lamarr was signed to play the title role on a loan out from M.G.M. so that PRC could cash in on the publicity of the engagement of Hedy Lamarr to the movie's leading man, John Loder. However, as luck would have it, due to film scheduling running overtime for Lamarr at her home studio of Metro she couldn't meet her loan out obligation to Edgar G. Ulmer and she recommended her best friend, Lenore Aubert, for the leading role and that's how Aubert got the part.
