Novelist Marcel Aymée published a letter before watching the film and said that he was against Bourvil choice for the role. But after the viewing, he apologized to Bourvil, who was at first wounded by the letter.
Bourvil was disturbed to have won the acting award in Venise Festival instead of Jean Gabin, whom he admired, and he used the TV cameras to explain to Gabin that he was sorry to have been chosen instead of him. Gabin, who was at first grumpy about this, finally forget the whole thing.
