Mark Damon, a film producer, sales executive, and spaghetti Western actor, died at 91, representatives for the executive told Deadline on Sunday night.
Damon, born Alan Harris in Chicago, started his career in Hollywood in 1956 after signing a contract with 20th Century Fox. After starring in House of Usher, Damon won a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer. The film was directed by Roger Corman, who died on Thursday.
Damon would move to Italy and star in films like The Reluctant Saint (1962), The Young Racers (1963), The Shortest Day (1963), Black Sabbath (1963), 100 Horseman (1964), Secret Agent 777 (1965), Dio, Come Ti Amo! (1966) and Johnny Oro (1966).
he first entered the world of independent sales and production in the 1970s while living and working in Italy where he saw a large market of independent international distributors eager for top American movies. He evolved from acting to film production and, in 1977, founded the Producers Sales Organization to sell American films to international distributors.

When cinephiles of a certain sensibility talk about the best decades for horror, they’ll probably point to the 1980s with its explosion of cutting-edge special effects and home video-induced demand for material. Or they might point to the era of Universal Pictures’ domination in the 1930s, followed up then by the moody Val Lewton thrillers of the 1940s. Maybe even a very unpopular kid will try to make an argument for the 2010s, at least until everyone pulls the A24 hat over his eyes and kicks him out.
But moviegoers would be foolish to overlook the 1960s. The decade saw not only two amazing horror flicks from Alfred Hitchcock but also caught the genre in an interesting time of transition. Filmmakers built on the Gothic approach of previous decades by adding a psychological dimension, finding new chills in an established model. Furthermore, the decade saw the first steps toward the ho,...

The label "hyperlink cinema" has sometimes been applied to "Pulp Fiction," in which writer-director Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary, who received a "story by" co-credit on the film, drew from the anthology structure of "Black Sabbath." Tarantino reportedly wanted to do with the crime film what director Mario Bava had done with the horror film in 1963. "Black Sabbath" also furnished Ozzy Osbourne's pioneering heavy metal band with its name, and it featured Boris Karloff — Frankenstein's Monster himself — introducing three tales of terror. The film's Italian title, I tre volti della paura, translates as, "The Three Faces of Fear."

“I have tennis elbow” Jane Campion says, stretching an arm out across the Zoom screen from her temporary Joshua Tree home. She’s in California for the release of her film The Power of the Dog—a Western set in Montana and shot in her native New Zealand.
Despite what her repetitive strain injury might suggest, Campion is by no means Wimbledon-ready. She has only learned tennis very recently during the pandemic and seems delighted by the humbling surrender of trying something new.
“I just can’t tell you the excitement I felt one night when I was playing with my coach and I hit the ball over about five times in a row,” she says. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, that was great, I can’t believe I’m hitting it.’”
But perhaps this gung-ho, game-on attitude provides some insight into who Campion is in a broader sense.

Sony Pictures has acquired “No Hard Feelings,” an R-rated comedy package with Jennifer Lawrence attached to star.
Along with Lawrence, the film will be directed by Gene Stupnitsky, a writer and co-executive producer on NBC’s “The Office.” “No Hard Feelings” will be Stupnitsky’s follow-up to the 2019 coming-of-age ensemble comedy “Good Boys,” his feature-length directorial debut. Stupnitsky also serves as co-writer on “No Hard Feelings,” alongside John Phillips.
“No Hard Feelings” is set in Montauk, NY, a hamlet on the east end of Long Island. The package is billed as an R-rated comedy in the vein of the 1983 Tom Cruise film “Risky Business” and the 2011 Cameron Diaz vehicle “Bad Teacher,” which Stupnitsky served as an executive producer and writer on.
Sony Pictures reportedly fended off some competition from other streamers and major studios in its pursuit of the project, including interest from Stupnitsky’s “Good Boys” distributor Universal Pictures.

As we wrap up the month of March, we have one final round of horror and sci-fi home media releases on tap before we start looking towards April and beyond, and I hope you have your wallets ready, because this week’s slate of titles is a budget killer, no doubt. Arrow Video is celebrating the 40th anniversary of An American Werewolf in London this year with a brand new limited edition Steelbook, and Warner Archives is showing some love to a few older titles this Tuesday as well: Isle of the Dead and The Bermuda Depths.
Vinegar Syndrome is keeping busy with a handful of new releases this week, too, including The Fear, Nightmare Weekend, Graduation Day, and Hitcher in the Dark. Severin Films is also celebrating a pair of films from Álex de la Iglesia with their Special Edition Blus for The Day of the Beast and Perdita Durango,...

No one can accuse Spanish filmmaker and all around maverick Álex de la Iglesia of being lazy. Not even during a pandemic. Somehow, he's getting shit done. We are all enjoying his series 30 coins and the director recently wrapped up photography of the first instalment of his new brand of horror films he calls The Fear Collection. That first film is a fable about the fear of tourism called Vececiafrenia. All of this was of course written with his writer Jorge Guerricaechevarría. The pair are at it again with production of a black humored road movie combined with a romantic comedy called El cuarto pasajero (The Fourth Passenger). It will star Ernesto Alterio and Blanca Suárez who have worked with de la...

After reading Heather's recent 4/5 review for The Wolf of Show Hollow, I can't wait to check it out this weekend and we're excited to share with Daily Dead readers and exclusive track from the movie's soundtrack! Also due out on October 9th, the 20-track release was composed by Ben Lovett and will be available courtesy of Lakeshore Records:
Lakeshore Records is set to release The Wolf of Snow Hollow—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on October 9. Composed by Ben Lovett, the album is a strikingly orchestrated, multi-faceted work inspired by old school Bernard Herrmann-era suspense thrillers reflecting all the dimensions of the offbeat horror film—from darkly comedic to tension-fueled terror to oddball mystery caper. The album includes the newly reimagined cover version of “Little Red Riding Hood” originally performed by Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs in 1966, and given a seductive and thoroughly haunting treatment by Lovett and indie artist Valen.

On Sept. 28, 1985 the world got a glimpse of what could have been a very different Batman animated series. The fourth episode of that year’s incarnation of Hanna-Barbera’s long running Super Friends animated series (Super Powers: Galactic Guardians) is “The Fear.” Unlike previous episodes, it wasn’t focused on the Justice League and their ongoing battle against cosmic forces of evil, but instead was firmly grounded in Gotham City and a battle between Batman and the Scarecrow.
Galactic Guardians was the eighth and final season of Hanna-Barbera’s beloved Super Friends franchise, and it was a notable departure from what came before. Galactic Guardians stories were more in keeping with DC Comics of the day, the animation style drew heavily on the work of Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, the artist behind the DC Comics Style Guide of the era, and for the second season in a row, the show leaned...

Flipper played a shambolic, hypnotic rendition of their anthem “Sex Bomb” earlier this year on their 40th anniversary tour, and they’ve now made it into a music video.
The clip opens with testimonials from the Melvins’ Dale Crover, Minutemen’s Mike Watt and artist Shepard Fairey, and it features clips from throughout the band’s career. Jesus Lizard singer David Yow, who has been touring as the group’s frontman, bellows the song’s chorus over and over again … “Sex bomb, baby!”

Nick Tosches, the novelist and music journalist who penned acclaimed books about subjects ranging from Jerry Lee Lewis and Hall & Oates to Sonny Liston and country music, has died at the age of 69.
The New York Times confirmed Tosches died Sunday at his Manhattan home. No cause of death was announced, but a friend told the Times that Tosches had been ill.
In a Rolling Stone review of The Nick Tosches Reader – and an overview of the “Noise Boys” music critics that include Tosches, Lester Bangs and Richard Meltzer – Robert Christgau called Tosches,...

When Black Sabbath first attempted to tour America in 1970, they had a Hell of a time. “We had to face the mayor of [every] town,” drummer Bill Ward once recalled. “We were banned all the time. They were afraid of us. They thought we were going to put a spell on you.”
Although Mick Jagger and Sammy Davis, Jr. had already publicly flirted with satanism, Black Sabbath — whose members all wore crosses to ward off evil — were much too scary for the United States. Their self-titled debut album sported a witchy woman on its cover,...

Jeff Fenholt, who played the title role in the original Broadway production and tour of the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice musical Jesus Christ Superstar and later became a TV evangelist, died Tuesday. He was 68 and apparently ailing, and though his son and friends in the faith community confirmed his death, details were scarce.
“Yesterday, my dad – Jeff Fenholt – went home to be with the Lord,” wrote son Tristan Fenholt on Facebook. “Like all of us, he was not a perfect man, but he knew the perfect Savior (Jesus), and loved to share the gospel with as many people as possible. His music and ministry literally touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. He truly loved the Lord… and still does. I love you and miss you, Dad!”

Post Malone’s third studio LP, Hollywood’s Bleeding, arrived today, featuring contributions from Sza, Kanye West, Young Thug, Swae Lee, Father John Misty and more. But perhaps the most surprising vocal feature comes from iconic Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne, who appears alongside Travis Scott on the track “Take What You Want.”
Osbourne – who contributes new vocals and not a sample – is the first voice we hear on the song, belting out the aching chorus: “I feel you crumble in my arms down to your heart of stone/You...

When you listen to “Worthless Abominations Destroyed,” the new “single” from Mayhem’s forthcoming album Daemon, you’re supposed to feel what Teloch, the band’s guitarist and songwriter for this cheery ray of sunshine, calls an “all is lost and hopeless” feeling. That’s considered a virtue in black metal, the extremely extreme subgenre the Norwegian group helped resuscitate in the early Nineties. Their breakthrough LP, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas — released after their bassist murdered their guitarist — felt especially gloomy (there was “none more bleak,” to pun off a...

John John Florence never decided to be a professional surfer. He was raised to be one. For the North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii native, the beach was the backdrop of his childhood. By three years old, he had already ridden his first wave. “My mom was pushing me in on a bodyboard,” he recalls in Rolling Stone’s “The First Time” video, in which he shares other surfing memories.
It wasn’t long before Florence became the youngest surfer (at age 13) to compete for the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Then,...

When Ozzy Osbourne launched his solo career with his 1980 debut album Blizzard of Ozz, he didn’t have the same support he had as a member of Black Sabbath. “That was in a warehouse in London,” Osbourne says of the album sleeve featuring him in a cape holding a cross with skull on the ground and a black cat behind him. “Because of funds, we had to do it ourselves. I think the cat was just there.” Then, with a laugh, he references one of the record’s more gothic songs,...

Mikael Åkerfeldt, leader of celebrated Swedish prog-rock outfit Opeth, looks back on the moment he became a metal fan, the time he partied with Abba’s very own Dancing Queen, a song that made him cry, what made him lose faith in contemporary metal, and more in the latest installment of “The First Time.”
The singer-guitarist — whose band ranked on Rolling Stone’s Greatest Metal Albums list and will release its 13th LP, In Cauda Venenum, next month — vividly remembers the moment metal came into his life. He recalls how...

Black Sabbath wrote the book on heavy, and their first decade’s worth of albums represent the Old Testament in the book of metal. From the clanging opening chords of “Black Sabbath” and lumbering siren’s call of “War Pigs” to the demon’s cry of “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” and proto-thrash riffs of “Symptom of the Universe,” the Iron Man laid the blueprint for the genre on their first eight albums.
Those LPs will now make up a new vinyl-only box set, The Vinyl Collection 1970 – 1978, which is due out September 6th.

Earlier this month, original Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward went public with his desire to reunite with the group via a video on his Twitter account. “I wanted to say that I love Tony [Iommi, guitar], Geezer [Butler, bass] and Ozzy [Osbourne, vocals] very much,” he said. “I’ve loved them for a long time, and I still do. And I would be very open-minded to any ideas about playing together in the future. That’s it. Love you all. Thanks.”

When an earthquake decimated parts of Armenia and killing between 25,000 to 50,000 people in 1988, the world was in shock. The Ussr earmarked the equivalent of billions of dollars to help rebuild, the U.S. sent medical aid and search dogs, and people from all over Europe came to help. Perhaps the most surprising fundraising effort, though, came from a who’s who of rock and metal legends calling themselves Rock Aid Armenia. The supergroup, which featured Deep Purple’s Ritchie Blackmore, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, Queen’s Brian May and Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi,...

The radio host was on-hand Wednesday to promote his newly issued book, Howard Stern Comes Again, which blends career-highlight interviews with memoir-styled commentary.
Early in the 14-minute segment, Stern admitted that his near-brush with cancer inspired him to reflect on his life in written form.

The band Traffic has probably been getting its heaviest web traffic ever this past week, thanks to the use of a 50-year-old song, “Dear Mr. Fantasy,” that plays briefly but inescapably in the first 10 minutes of the superhero epic. It’s the most prominent of the handful of pop songs that show up during the three-hour running time, at least before an even older oldie, from 1945, brings up the end credits.
And boomers who are well familiar with the Traffic tune as an FM staple for the last half-century may not be that much less initially puzzled by its appearance than millennials: Why isSteve Winwood warbling aboard the starship Benatar?

L7 first came together about 19 hours south of Seattle, in Los Angeles, in 1985. Although they had no claim to the Emerald City’s grunge explosion, they signed to Sub Pop, toured with Nirvana and shocked audiences more efficiently than their Lollapalooza contemporaries. When Rolling Stone ranked the 50 Greatest Grunge Albums earlier this week, L7 notched two LPs on the list: 1990’s metal-punk hybrid Smell the Magic (its “Shove” could serve as a genre blueprint) and its 1992 follow-up, Bricks Are Heavy, which is home to the hit “Pretend We’re Dead...

“Back then, I just wanted to write songs I could be proud of and be able to play in five years,” Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong told Rolling Stone in 2014 of his mindset two decades prior.
He would of course achieve that and a whole lot more. In 1994, Green Day accomplished what seemed unthinkable for young punks before them: They became an international phenomenon. With the release of the bratty, rousing Dookie, the trio not only made their major-label debut; they created a new youth movement as grunge was beginning its decline.

In 2015’s Curve, starring Julianne Hough, the pervert drifter antagonist stomps her phone, snuffing out its electronic life and hampering her escape plans—no further explanation required. Happy New Year, friends! I come bearing a belated gift featuring not one, but two horror icons in the form of the 1963, Mario Bava-directed, Boris Karloff-starring anthology film Black Sabbath. And in case you’re wondering, yes this title inspired a band that would go on to make some of the most well-known metal songs of all time (that’s good!) and whose lead singer kicked off the celebrity reality TV craze (that’s bad!). Oddly enough, I found the film in Shudder’s “Unhappy Holidays” section, even though after watching it I’m having trouble finding any connection to the holiday season. But I’m not here to start another “is it a Christmas movie?” debate. I just want to bone up on my Bava, as I’ve seen very little of his work and I also like the idea of getting more Karloff, who pulls double...
