The movie is set in Transylvania, a part of Romania. Around the time the film was made Romania was making noises about breaking away from the Soviet Union's influence. In an homage to this (of sorts), there's a point in the movie where Bardella (the She Beast herself) murders someone with a sickle. She throws the sickle down, where it happens to land on a small, mallet-style metal hammer (conveniently lying on the floor), -forming a hammer-and-sickle, the symbol of the USSR.
Because Barbara Steele was only available for one day, she was kept on the set for 18 hours. For many years afterward, she wouldn't speak to the producer.
Horrified by the outrageously comical final car chase scene shot by the second unit, director Michael Reeves reluctantly decided to keep it without a cut, not only because it couldn't be re-shot for budget reasons but also because the film's 75-minute running time was short enough as it was.
A fair share of the crew also appear in the movie in minor roles.
As teenagers, Ian Ogilvy and director Michael Reeves were actually school buddies. They had been out of touch for several years, when Reeves asked Ogilvy to star in this, his first feature film.
