2021 Sanfic Industria concluded last Wednesday and the winners of the various programs were announced at Variety. Given that our main line of interest here at Screen Anarchy is genre and fantastic cinema we were eager to see who came out of the program with a boost to their project. The big winner of the Lab was Miguel Alejandro Gómez and his project Crono-Cápsulas. He won a Morbido prize and one from our friends at Blood Window as well. A few friends had projecsts in the program and it was good to see that Seba De Caro's El Viejo and Sofia Garza-Barba's Santos Remedios will take home Morbido Prizes. What the Variety article did not go into detail about was what the prizes entailed for...

Pushed back from last August and now held online as Covid-19 still rages in Chile, Sanfic Industria, the high-energy industry part of Santiago de Chile’s Sanfic festival, runs March 18-26. Given its context, it bids to play an even more crucial role in Latin America’s industry re-set after experiencing a more punishing pandemic impact than any other part of the world.
Sanfic Industria: More Growth, Despite Covid-19
Over the last 12 months, film and TV events, whether virtual or on-site, have almost all slimmed. Sanfic Industria, in contrast, is expanding, adding a much-awaited Series Lab showcase. Santiago Lab has already evolved massively over the last two-to-three years, blossoming from a tight-knit niche launchpad for promising titles to a can’t-miss event for many of the region’s most ambitious projects.
Further growth, and a move into drama series, looked inevitable. Over the last five years, high-end drama series production...

Argentine filmmaker Seba De Caro’s latest outing in the horror genre, “El Viejo” (“The Old Man”) taps collective and childhood memories of Argentina’s military dictatorship and the haunted house fable.
“For me, the possibility of narrating a story that pits childhood against the most terrifying past in the history of my country is a unique experience,” he said. “To some extent, it’s my own story,” he told Variety, noting that since he was born in 1975, images of Argentina’s cruel dictatorship under Lt. Gen. Jorge Rafael Videla are embedded among his childhood memories.
“El Viejo” is among six Latin American projects that participate at the Sanfic-Morbido Lab, whose pitching sessions take place March 23. The project is in development and seeks strategic partners.
“El Viejo” turns on an old man who has been pulled out of an asylum by his sons who can’t afford the fees anymore.

Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2013—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2013 to create a unique double feature.
All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2013 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch in that perfect world we know doesn't exist but can keep dreaming of every time we go to the movies.
