A total of 36 individuals earned their first Primetime Emmy acting nominations in 2024, including “Feud” stars Naomi Watts and Tom Hollander and recent Oscar also-rans Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”) and Ryan Gosling (“Saturday Night Live”). A standout among these newbies is Paul Rudd, who is the only one in the group with shots at two performance wins: Best Comedy Supporting Actor (“Only Murders in the Building”) and Best Narrator (“Secrets of the Octopus”).
Rudd could now make Emmys history as the eighth doubly-nominated first-timer to triumph on at least one of his bids. The first to do so was Robert Cummings, who simultaneously won for “12 Angry Men” and lost for “My Hero” in 1955. He was followed by Jack Albertson, Eileen Brennan, Jane Lynch, Riz Ahmed, Ann Dowd, and Ali Wong.

Space Cadet, which stars Emma Roberts as Florida party girl Rex, who finds herself unexpectedly becoming an astronaut candidate, comes from director by Liz W. Garcia, who brings a refreshing spin to the beloved “fish out of water” trope,
infused with a female-centric narrative that reminded me very much of classics such as the 80s Goldie Hawn-led duo of Protocol and Private Benjamin – which itself inspired a similar “fish out of water” military comedy in 2002s Cadet Kelly; along with the likes of Miss Congeniality (2000) and Legally Blonde, released a year later in 2001.
Garcia’s film very much echoes Legally Blonde and Miss Congeniality thematically, both of which featured strong, independent women – played by Reese Witherspoon and Sandra Bullock respectively – who...

There are shades of Legally Blonde and Private Benjamin in Amazon’s lesser, low-rent comedy about a Florida bartender with dreams of being an astronaut
There’s a well-tested, and mostly well-liked, formula being recycled in Amazon’s lightweight Fourth of July comedy Space Cadet. It’s the mildly rousing story of an underestimated blonde excelling in a more serious field, something Goldie Hawn aced in Private Benjamin and Protocol before Melanie Griffith took over with Working Girl and Born Yesterday, followed by Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde. It’s an easy, against-all-odds rise for us to get behind and a career-defining every-scene showcase for an actor who may have also found herself unfairly undervalued by the industry.
There’s something for both actor and character to prove, and when it’s done right, we should be able to taste the same hunger, cheering for an inevitable victory. But in...

In September 2021, Olivia Colman bagged her first career Emmy for “The Crown” despite having failed on her Oscar bid for “The Father” five months earlier. This made her the 16th performer to triumph at the Emmys after going home empty-handed at the same year’s Oscars and the fourth to do so during the 21st century. The release of the 2024 Emmy nominations ballots confirmed that nine of the 16 actors who lost at the latest Oscars ceremony are capable of joining Colman on said list.
Gold Derby’s current Emmy odds indicate that the man and woman with the best hopes of following in Colman’s footsteps are Ryan Gosling and Jodie Foster, who just earned their respective third and fifth Academy Award notices for their supporting turns in “Barbie” and “Nyad.” They are now generally expected to share in the experience of being first-time acting Emmy nominees thanks to his...

Goldie Hawn wants to work with her famous family on a project and recently revealed she has some ideas about how to make it happen.
In a new interview, the Overboard actress expressed her desire to work with family members like her husband, Kurt Russell, and her kids, Kate Hudson, Oliver Hudson, and Wyatt Russell.
“What I would love, actually — before we all get too old — [it] would be so great to do a movie together,” Hawn said during an appearance on the Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa podcast. “Wouldn’t it? It would be so fun and so crazy and oh, my God.”
Hawn brought up the idea after podcast host Ripa suggested she and her family should star in a reality show.
“We might do something with Oliver that is a cartoon, so in other words, we would all be the voices of that,” Hawn said.

When the 2023 Primetime Emmy nominations were revealed, Ali Wong and Pedro Pascal both had the honor of being included in multiple performance lineups. She made history as the first newcomer to the acting categories recognized for both live action (“Beef”) and voice (“Tuca & Bertie”) work, while he became the first actor nominated for three programs on his initial Emmy outing. These achievements made them the newest members of a group of 26 people who earned their first two (or three) acting Emmy nominations in a single year.
Wong’s eventual Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress win for “Beef” made her the seventh person in this bunch to succeed on one of her bids. The first was Robert Cummings, who received 1955’s Best Single Performance by an Actor prize for “Twelve Angry Men” and simultaneously lost for his regular lead turn on “My Hero.”

“So keep on running sweetheart. You’re a racehorse. I love you,” Hawn concluded.
Hudson expressed her gratitude to her mom in the comment section, saying, “Haha! Mama you’re the best! Being fast is still my favourite accomplishment. Catch me if you can!

In Luca Guadagnino’s latest cinematic endeavor, “Challengers,” Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist form a dynamic, throuple-esque trio, each delivering performances that scream Oscar-worthy. The real question is, will Academy voters look beyond the palpable sexual chemistry to acknowledge the film’s artistic merit? That’s a challenge for the marketing maestros.
Penned by newcomer Justin Kuritzkes, the spouse of “Past Lives” writer-director Celine Song, “Challengers” weaves through a 13-year narrative, chronicling the life of Tashi Duncan (Zendaya), a tennis wunderkind-turned-coach, who hatches a plan for her husband Art’s (Faist) comeback. The plan pits him against his ex-buddy and Tashi’s former flame, Patrick (O’Connor), setting the stage for a dramatic unraveling.

It was nice while it lasted: David Fincher’s “The Killer” opened to #1 on the Netflix Top 10 last week and it’s now #3. Another high-profile Netflix Original took its place with Mary Lambert’s “Best. The premise of Nancy Meyers' 2006 romance "The Holiday" is rather high concept. Iris (Kate Winslet), a reporter in England, has just broken up with her cheating boyfriend. Amanda (Cameron Diaz), a Los Angeles native and showbiz impresario, has just done the same. By chance, the two heartbroken women discover a want-ad in the newspaper wherein they would swap homes for the holidays and live in each other's respective towns. Amanda, while in England, finds some unexpected romantic company with Iris' visiting brother Graham (Jude Law). The two decide to have a fling, but end up seeing each other more and more. Iris, meanwhile, settling in L.A., finds herself drifting closer and closer toward a friend of her ex, a charming and funny dude named Miles (Jack Black). The film also features Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon, Kathryn Hahn, and John Krasinski. Lindsay Lohan makes a cameo.

After Netflix plugged the plug on Nancy Meyers’ expensive romantic-comedy movie earlier this week, it seems that Warner Bros may come to the rescue.
Nancy Meyers had spent over a year developing Paris Paramount for Netflix, but she and the streaming service clashed over the budget. Nancy Meyers wanted at least $150 million, which would have made it one of the most expensive romantic comedies of all time, but Netflix wouldn’t budge past $130 million. It was reported just last week that Scarlett Johansson, Penélope Cruz, Michael Fassbender and Owen Wilson were circling roles in the movie, and it was said that at least $80 million of that budget would have gone to the talent. Sources told THR that Warner Bros was “attracted to the idea of a ready-made hot project with an A-list cast and possible summer start date.“

The Nancy Meyers movie that recently fell apart at Netflix over budget issues may be revived at Warner Bros.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Warners, attracted to the idea of a ready-made hot project with an A-list cast and possible summer start date, may be stepping in to pick it up. Exploratory talks are underway, according to several sources.
Scarlett Johansson was attached to play the lead role in Meyers’ feature, with Penélope Cruz, Owen Wilson and Michael Fassbender also eying the project. Meyers will write, direct and produce the comedy, which is currently known as Paris Paramount, although it is not clear if that’s the actual title, a working title or a code name.

Netflix has “axed” a new Nancy Meyers romantic comedy following a dispute with the director.
The filmmaker has lined up her next project, which will be her first feature film since The Intern in 2015.
Titled Paris Paramount, the comedy, announced in April 2022, follows a filmmaking duo who reunite on set after a failed romance years before.
Paris Paramount is eyeing an A-list cast, including Scarlett Johansson and Owen Wilson alongside Penélope Cruz and Michael Fassbender.
According to Deadline, it’s this cast that may have contributed to Netflix canning the project, as Meyers is said to have requested a higher budget to fulfill an $80m (£65.8m) payment to the main cast members.
The film was originally budgeted at $130m (£106.9m), which is $100m (£82.2m) more than The Intern.

We’ll have to wait a little longer for the next movie from Nancy Meyers as Netflix has pulled the plug on what was to be a star-studded romantic comedy.
The reason for Netflix choosing to axe the project comes down to the budget. Nancy Meyers was wanting at least $150 million dollars, which would have made it one of the most expensive romantic comedies of all time, but Netflix wouldn’t budge past $130 million. That’s still an awfully high budget for a movie of this type, but Meyers typically employs an all-star cast who demand big salaries. It was reported just last week that Scarlett Johansson, Penélope Cruz, Michael Fassbender and Owen Wilson were circling roles in the movie.

Update [Tuesday March 14, 11:14 p.m.]: Moviegoers agonizing over the breakdown of Nancy Meyers’ latest film (one that was meant to bring her out of retirement), don’t cry into your cashmere just yet. News hit earlier on Tuesday that Netflix was no longer developing the new rom-com from the iconic director, but sources with knowledge of the project said that filmmakers are looking into other options to get it to screen. The untitled film was reported to star Scarlett Johansson, Penélope Cruz, Owen Wilson and Michael Fassbender. Pending talent availability, the project will be shopped to prospective buyers as a package, one source added. Representatives for Meyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Netflix is shutting down its Nancy Meyers movie, the star-studded romantic comedy that was expected to be her first directing vehicle in nearly a decade.
According to sources, Netflix and Meyers could not come to an agreement on the budget. Meyers is said to have asked for a budget of at least $150 million, but the studio did not want to go over $130 million. It was a steep price tag for a genre that is usually more in the midbudget range and one that could have made it the most expensive romantic comedy of all time. Meyers, who last directed the 2015 Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro feature The Intern, has commanded budgets on the higher end for the genre and is known for her work with big stars such as Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep. She is also known for her Architectural Digest-worthy production design.

Hollywood icon Goldie Hawn thinks the Oscars have lost their touch.
The actor won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1970 for her breakout role in Cactus Flower. She was nominated again in the Best Actress category for Private Benjamin in 1981.
“It used to be elegant,” Hawn told Variety of the Oscars in a new cover story.
“I’m not old-fashioned, but sometimes jokes are off-colour. And I’m missing reverence. Things have become politicized. I want to see people in awe. I want to see people believing again. I want to see people laughing more in a way that isn’t just at someone else’s expense.”
The actor added that Will Smith’s infamous slap at last year’s ceremony was “indicative of our culture right now”.
“I mean, you could look at it and say, ‘What the hell just happened?’ Somebody lost control. They lost their self-regulation.

Goldie Hawn has revealed how the Oscars led to her biggest-ever career regret.
The actor has been nominated twice – once for Best Supporting Actress in 1970, following her early role in Cactus Flower, and again in the Best Actress category for Private Benjamin in 1981.
She won the former trophy, beating out Catherine Burns (Last Summer), Dyan Cannon (Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice) Sylvia Miles (Midnight Cowboy) and Susannah York.
However, the award was picked up by Racquel Welch on Hawn’s behalf as she didn’t make it to the ceremony – something the actor wishes she could go back and change.
“I never got dressed up – I never got to pick up the award,” she said in a new Variety interview, adding: “I regret it.”
She continued: “It’s something that I look back on now and think, ‘It would have been so great to be able to have done that.’”

It turns out there was some razzle dazzle before the razzle dazzle.
Back in 2003, “Chicago” rolled through the awards season on its way to that year’s best picture Oscar. But there’s a little-known subplot in the development of the Miramax film. Some 15 years before Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones shared the screen in the iconic movie adaptation of the Broadway musical, Harvey Weinstein had been developing a precursor version with Goldie Hawn and Madonna. Hawn was set to produce and star as the fame-chasing murderess Velma Kelly, while Madonna was on board to play Roxie Hart, the upstart killer threatening to steal Velma’s thunder. But Weinstein decided to go in a different direction despite having deals in place.
“Harvey basically undermined me and Madonna,” Hawn tells Variety in a cover story about her legendary career. The dancer-turned-comedy star was quietly working on the film in the late...

The filmmaker behind films like What Women Want, The Intern, and Something’s Gotta Give, Nancy Meyers, is assembling an A-list cast for her next movie. According to reports, Scarlett Johansson, Owen Wilson, Penelope Cruz, and Michael Fassbender could join Meyers’ next feature-length project insiders refer to as Paris Paramount.
We hear Johansson is circling the lead role, with sources saying the story revolves around a talented young writer/director who falls head over heels for a producer. After taking the entertainment industry by storm to do several successful projects, the couple ends their union romantically and professionally. Later, the duo finds themselves working alongside one another when a unique project crosses their path, forcing them back into an old routine plagued with complications and overbearing Hollywood personalities.
The plot shares similarities with Meyers’ Hollywood experience and her longtime romantic and professional relationship with Charles Shyer, another of Tinseltown’s writer-director-producer combos.

Nancy Meyers’ return to the director’s chair is getting underway.
After not directing a movie since 2015’s The Intern, the filmmaker known for her upscale romantic comedies is back with a project that is attracting A-list talent. Scarlett Johansson is circling the lead role in Meyers’ upcoming feature for Netflix, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter, with Penélope Cruz, Owen Wilson and Michael Fassbender also eying the project.
Netflix had no comment.
Meyers will write, direct and produce the comedy, which is currently known as Paris Paramount, although it is not clear if that’s the actual title, a working title or a code name.
Sources say the story centers on a talented young writer-director who falls in love with a producer, with the pair making several successful films before calling it quits romantically and professionally. The two are forced back together, however, when a great new project arises,...

Hollywood star Raquel Welch has died at the age of 82.
The star, who appeared in films including Fantastic Voyage and One Million Years BC, died on Wednesday (15 February) following a “brief illness”.
Welch’s rep confirmed the news to ABC, writing: “The legendary bombshell actress of film, television and stage, passed away peacefully early this morning after a brief illness.
“Her career spanned over 50 years starring in over 30 films and 50 television series and appearances. The Golden Globe winner, in more recent years, was involved in a very successful line of wigs.”
“Raquel leaves behind her two children, son Damon Welch and her daughter, Tahnee Welch.”

Jordan Peele’s 2017 movie Get Out became an instant classic thanks to its incredible characters, compelling mix of comedy and horror, and pinpoint skewering of America’s racial dynamics. The film abounds with memorable moments, including when the patriarch of his villainous family, Roman Armitage (played by Richard Herd), reveals the disturbing twist to a kidnapped Chris (Daniel Kaluuya).
Herd isn’t in Get Out for long, but he has a crucial role in landing Peele’s central metaphor about racism. The director used an idiosyncratic piece of advice to help the actor find the right tone for the scene.
‘Get Out’ is one of the best movies of the century
When the trailers for Get Out first dropped, it was easy to be skeptical of the concept. In 2017, Jordan Peele was half of a beloved comedy duo with Keegan-Michael Key, but no one knew about his ambitions as a solo filmmaker.

The Movie: "Private Benjamin" (1980)
Where You Can Stream It: Showtime
The Pitch: Judy Benjamin (Goldie Hawn) has dreamed of one thing since she was eight years old, according to the film's opening title card: essentially, to be a wife. Specifically, "All I want [...] is a big house ... nice clothes, two closets, a live-in maid, and a professional man for a husband." "Private Benjamin" starts by giving Judy everything she's ever wanted, starting with a huge wedding to a professional man named Yale Goodman (played perfunctorily by Albert Brooks), who promptly dies while consummating their marriage later that same night.
Judy was a divorcée (she was previously married at 20) and widow by the age of 28. Her family didn't know what to do with her,...

When the 2022 Emmy nominations were announced, Sydney Sweeney joined an elite group of 24 individuals who each earned their first two TV academy acting bids in the same year. As a “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus” cast member, she is respectively in the running for both the Best Drama Supporting Actress and Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress prizes. Triumphing in at least one category would make her only the fourth doubly-nominated female first-timer to pull off a win, after Eileen Brennan (1981: won for “Private Benjamin”; lost for “Taxi”), Jane Lynch (2010: won for “Glee”; lost for “Two and a Half Men”) and Ann Dowd (2017: won for “The Handmaid’s Tale”; lost for “The Leftovers”).

In between his mega-hit “Back to the Future” sequels and his Oscar juggernaut crowdpleaser “Forrest Gump,” Robert Zemeckis directed the sublime black comedy “Death Becomes Her,” released to theaters 30 years ago on July 31, 1992. In a summer of mostly safe, audience-friendly comedies like “Sister Act” and “HouseSitter,” “Death Becomes Her” entered the marketplace an oddball piece of dark, absurdist humor that didn’t fit into a clear category. Let’s take a moment and reflect on the “Death Becomes Her” 30th anniversary.
Starring Meryl Streep, Bruce Willis and Goldie Hawn, the film tells of a fading actress named Madeline (Streep) who takes a magical immortality treatment that makes her beautiful and ageless, only to discover her old rival Helen (Hawn) long ago consumed the potion. After Madeline’s husband Ernest (Willis) pushes Madeline down the stairs, breaking her neck, havoc and hilarity ensue as both Madeline and Helen suffer increasingly debilitating...

An actress receiving two Primetime Emmy nominations in a single year may seem like a rare occurrence, but it is actually fairly common. In fact, there have been 65 instances since 1967, including two last year involving Aidy Bryant and Jean Smart. What is uncommon is a woman earning double recognition within the same genre, with Bryant being one of only a dozen to ever be so honored (discounting guest categories). Now, Toni Collette has a shot at becoming the lucky 13th.
For her work on the two limited series “The Staircase” and “Pieces of Her,” Collette could be nominated this year as both a featured player and a lead. On the former show, she plays Kathleen Peterson, the subject of a real early 2000s murder case that ended in the conviction of her husband, Michael. Her potential supporting notice for playing Peterson would be her third in the category following bids...

There are any number of memorable images from James Gray’s “Ad Astra,” a singularly introspective space adventure in which Brad Pitt journeys to the outer limits of our solar system just to hear Daddy Lee Jones tell him that he doesn’t care, but none have stayed with me quite like the shot of Pitt’s astronaut landing on the Moon — the very first stop on his interstellar voyage into the heart of darkness. Once the ultimate symbol of humanity’s possibility and the nearest proof of our species’ infinite reach, the Moon has since been reduced to a low-gravity version of Newark Airport, complete with American fast food restaurants and the general vibe of an upscale New Jersey outlet mall. The point is clear even before Pitt’s character double-underlines it: There is nothing truly new for man to discover among the vast ocean of stars, because we...

Nancy Meyers is bringing her filmmaking talents (and her immaculate kitchens) to Netflix, where she’ll write, direct and produce a new feature film.
News of the partnership comes after Meyers and Netflix teamed to release the short film “Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish),” which debuted on the streamer’s social channels in 2020. The special project brought together the cast of “Father of the Bride” and “Father of the Bride Part II” — Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Kieran Culkin, George Newbern and Martin Short — for the first time in 25 years, with Robert De Niro, Florence Pugh, Alexandra Shipp and Ben Platt added to the mix. Meyers wrote and directed the Banks family reunion clip (produced by Reese Witherspoon), which benefitted World Central Kitchen.
Details about the new film are scarce, though the project is described as an ensemble comedy, a formula which Meyers has mastered over her career.

Since the ninth ceremony in 1937, the Academy has nominated over 400 performances for Best Supporting Actress, with 83 actresses claiming victory. Some of the industry’s best character actresses have been recognized in this category, as well as some veteran actresses who accept roles with less screen time but a lot of impact. This category also honors genres often overlooked by the Academy, such as comedy and horror, although they rarely win. However, many of the nominated performances are just as memorable as the winner, and in some cases, even more so.
Would “Private Benjamin” still be as funny today without Eileen Brennan‘s Captain Lewis? Or “Blazing Saddles” without Madeline Kahn‘s Lili Von Shtupp? And despite numerous adaptations, it’s still Piper Laurie we envision as Carrie’s knife-wielding, religious-fanatic mother. And no shower scene will ever top Janet Leigh‘s slashing in “Psycho.”

Richard Herd, an instantly recognizable character actor who recurred as Mr. Wilhelm on Seinfeld and appeared in All the President’s Men, The China Syndrome and several Star Trek projects, among many other credits, died Tuesday in Los Angeles of cancer complications. He was 87.

Herd appeared in 11 Seinfeld episodes during it last four seasons, including the finale.

One of the biggest film stars of the 70s and 80s, Hawn left acting and producing behind for 15 years. She talks about Hollywood, patriarchy, dancing – and how meditation changed her life
Goldie Hawn is Hollywood royalty, but that’s not how she sees it. Sure, she won an Oscar at 24, for her role starring opposite Ingrid Bergman and Walter Matthau in 1969’s screwball comedy Cactus Flower, and was a box-office favourite for much of the 1970s, 80s and 90s. The ultimate tongue-in-cheek ditzy blonde expanded successfully into producing, too, with movies such as Private Benjamin and Overboard. Kurt Russell, her co-star in the latter, has been her partner for 37 years. And yet, she says: “I consider myself more a dancer than anything else.”
Her mother was a dance teacher and, pre-fame, Hawn performed as a ballerina and go-go dancer before being spotted on a can-can line in Los Angeles and drafted into TV comedy.

The Writers Guild of America handed out its top awards of the year in concurrent ceremonies on both the East and West Coasts on Saturday night, with big winners including “Parasite” and “Jojo Rabbit” on the film side and “Succession” and “Barry” in TV.
Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won took home the award for original screenplay for “Parasite,” winning out over nominees such as Noah Baumbach for “Marriage Story.” Bong expressed his gratitude to WGA members for reading his script in translation. “You understood the structure of our story and the nuance of our dialogue — it’s amazing,” he said.
In English, Bong made a reference to President Donald Trump’s polarizing political agenda by observing: “Some people make the barriers higher. We writers, we love to destroy the barriers.”
The other major film winner was “Jojo Rabbit” by Taika Waititi, which won over competitors including Todd Phillips and Scott Silver for “Joker.

Nancy Meyers, the highest-grossing female writer-director-producer in Hollywood’s box office history, will be the recipient of the WGA West’s 2020 Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement.
Diane Keaton, who starred in Meyers’ 2003 film Something’s Gotta Give, will present the award at the 72nd annual Writers Guild Awards ceremony on February 1 in Los Angeles. The award is presented to guild members who have “advanced the literature of motion pictures and made outstanding contributions to the profession of the screenwriter.”
“Nancy Meyers is the writer many of us aspire to be – her scripts walk the line of blending challenging ideas with comedic situations, dramatic themes with hard jokes,” said WGA West president David A. Goodman. “Her work consistently proves that movies about the foibles and frailties of humans will be commercially successful in the hands of a master of her craft. The Wgaw Board of Directors is thrilled to give her this award.
