Will Jennings, the two-time Oscar and Grammy-winning co-writer of the beloved Titanic theme, Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” has died at 80 in his Texan home, according to multiple reports. Though a cause of death was not identified, those close to the composer said he had been in declining health for a number of years.
The prolific lyricist was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the tunes “People Alone” from The Competition (1980) and “Up Where We Belong” from An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), the latter of which he won. In 2006, Jennings was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
In addition to his two Oscars, Jennings won three Grammys: “My Heart Will Go On” and “Tears in Heaven” (Song of the Year), from 1992’s Jennifer Jason Leigh-starring cop drama Rush,...

Television history is littered with failed sitcoms headlined by comedians that audiences seem to love — in the right show. Turn up in a stinker, however, and the shows are gone in a blink. Matthew Perry was great in Friends, but no one wanted Mr. Sunshine. Audiences adored McLean Stevenson in M*A*S*H but said goodbye to Hello Larry. Jon Cryer scored with Two and Half Men but was booted from his Extended Family this year.
Here are four more comedy stars who flopped multiple times while trying to get sitcoms off the ground…
1 Jason Bateman
Bateman received two well-deserved Emmy nominations for his performance as Michael Bluth in Arrested Development, recognition that came decades after his breakthrough as a Tiger Beat cover boy in Silver Spoons and The Hogan Family. In between, however, he starred in several sitcom flops that lasted a year or less, including It’s Your Move...

In the early 2000’s, Amy Winehouse was a powerhouse of a new voice in music. Her impressive vocals and songs about heartbreak brought her both critical and commercial success. Sadly, this gifted artist struggled with addiction and other issues. She passed away at the very young age of 27 leaving fans a powerful legacy. The 2015 documentary Amy opened up her world in wondrous ways. And now, filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson has brought her story to the big screen with a terrific performance from Marisa Abela as Winehouse. Back to Black tells the life story of this shining star that faded much too soon.
We recently had the pleasure of sitting down opposite the very talented Sam Taylor-Johnson and Back to Black star, Ms. Abela. I’ve spoken to Sam in the past regarding the terrific Nowhere Boy, and she was lovely back then as well. The director opened up about taking on Amy’s life,...

In the summer of 1968, months after the releases of We’re Only in It for the Money and Lumpy Gravy and a few months ahead of the release of Cruising with Ruben & the Jets, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention found time for a five-hour concert on the Sunset Strip. A new box set, Whisky a Go Go, 1968 — due out June 21 — chronicles the unique evening, which the band recorded for release but, in Zappa’s signature fashion, divvied up for spare parts on other recordings. Nick Cave has released “Song for Amy,” a new track appearing on both his score and the soundtrack for the Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black. Stream it below.
On “Song for Amy,” Cave sings over a gorgeous arrangement of piano, flute, and strings while delivering somber lyrics like, “I’d give you anything for you to stay/ But if you go now, I won’t stay in your way.”
In addition to “Song for Amy,” the Back to Black soundtrack features highlights from Winehouse’s discography and several songs from artists who inspired her, including Billie Holliday and The Shangri-Las. The film’s score was composed by Cave and his longtime collaborator Warren Ellis. Stream both albums below.

For her “unofficial” 2009 John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy, Sam Taylor-Johnson had so little music to work with that the opening chord of “Hard Day’s Night” pretty much had to carry the whole movie. You might think that history would repeat for Back to Black, the short but fast-lived story of Amy Winehouse, who rose to international fame in her teens and never saw 28, never mind 30. Surprisingly, the Winehouse estate is all in, and although one might argue that the singer’s trainwreck notoriety has been slightly snow-washed to protect the living, there’s still a surprisingly hard edge here, in a rare film that gives rock ’n’ roll agency to a woman for once, like a reverse-angle Sid & Nancy.
In a way, any music biopic is off to a bad start, since there’s always going to be the curse of symmetry: everything must square with what we already know,...

It's the end of an era.
Young Sheldon Season 7 wraps up the family-oriented prequel to The Big Bang Theory, leaving a hole in CBS' schedule that will be hard to fill.
The news that the series was ending has been heartbreaking for many reasons. Young Sheldon features sharp, snarky characters, satirizes small-town life, and offers a nostalgic look back at life in the early 1990s.
Young Sheldon is one of the last family sitcoms.
These types of shows were popular during the period that the series is set in; during the late 1980s and early '90s, there were a ton of comedies featuring families with kids, such as Family Ties, Growing Pains, the original version of The Wonder Years, The Hogan Family, and many others.
These types of sitcoms aren't nearly as common nowadays. Many shows feature kids, but they're often tangential to the main plot -- The Neighborhood...

Broadcast, the electronic dream pop project of James Cargill and Trish Keenan, who died of pneumonia in 2011, previously reissued their entire discography in 2015. Now, Cargill is unearthing dozens of demos collected over a 10-year span. According to a press release, Spell Blanket comprises of “songs and sketches” from Trish’s “extensive archive of 4-track tapes and MiniDiscs” that would have eventually served as Broadcast’s fifth album.
Distant Call, on the other hand, comprises of early demos that eventually would appear on their albums Haha Sound, Tender Buttons, and The Future Crayon. The album also features “Come Back To Me” and “Please Call To Book,” two songs that Cargill discovered after Keenan’s death. The latter song was Keenan’s entry for...

In honor of the 20th anniversary of Amy Winehouse’s debut album Frank, unseen video footage from the artist’s 2004 video shoot for the song “In My Bed” was released Tuesday.
The nearly four-minute lyric video was created in conjunction with the picture disc vinyl edition release of Frank, which features singles “Take the Box,” “Stronger than Me,” “F*** Me Pumps,” and “In My Bed.”
Stripped of her signature cat eye and beehive hairdo in the clip, Winehouse struts through a hotel, keeping her eye on the camera before and during clapperboard takes.

Titus Kaphar’s Exhibiting Forgiveness premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday.
“Some things can’t be worked out on canvas,” Andra Day says to André Holland in the drama, but some things can come alive on-screen and off-screen.
That certainly proved true now at the Sundance Film Festival, where Kaphar and Exhibiting Forgiveness just had a true moment. A packed Eccles Theater gave this afternoon’s premiere of the acclaimed painter’s feature directorial debut a resoundingly enthusiastic reaction.
A round of applause and cheers during the closing credits clearly caught the attention of suddenly busy buyers in the audience. As Kaphur and cast members Holland, Day, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and John Earl Jelks took the post-screening stage to a standing ovation, you could see a number of those buyers out in the lobby Asap and on their phones. One of the earliest success stories in the history of TV is “I Love Lucy,” which enjoyed six seasons atop the ratings. When the cast was ready to slow down a bit, audiences weren’t ready to see their favorite zany redhead leave altogether, so the 30-minute sitcom was retooled as 13 one-hour specials broadcast sporadically over three seasons, under a new name: “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.”
In the 70 years since, many TV shows have seen name changes before airing their first episodes. One of the most notorious is ABC’s attempt to soften the title of “You Can’t Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23,” which was shortened to the less-offensive “Apartment 23.” However, apparently that wasn’t quite as catchy, so they compromised with “You Can’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23” ahead of its April 2012 premiere.

Valerie Perrine, the beloved actress who played Eve Teschmacher in the first two Superman movies, is proving to be an inspiration far outside the superhero genre. Perrine was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2015 but remains in good spirits, challenging herself to continue the fight.

Hello and welcome to the Scene 2 Seen podcast, I am your host Valerie Complex. Today’s guest is Harry Shum Jr. and we’re going to go through the highlights of his acting resume beginning with his first gig in 2003 on an episode of Boston Public.
I remember seeing him in Glee, but that heartthrob moment toward the end of Crazy Rich Asians gave me pause. I thought, “Man! He’s so much better for Astrid than her ex-husband!” It was a small cameo role but it made an impression on the audience, and helped to grow anticipation for the sequel. Cra was a massive hit and features a historic all-Asian cast, and was nominated for a slew of awards including at Critics Choice and the SAG Awards.
Shum was in the Netflix film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon II – The Green Destiny, the sequel to the Academy Award-winning martial arts film set 20 years later.

I never worked on a TV show where a male writer declared it “rape day” or groped me or watched porn in the writers room, some of the actions attributed to Eric Weinberg. This was, as one female writer was quoted, “The worst of the worst.” This is the big stuff.
But in my nearly 20 years as a sitcom writer, I experienced plenty of medium to small stuff. Everything from a showrunner’s hanging women’s underpants on his lamp, to being told women aren’t funny, to being asked if my contribution to a script was making the coffee, to innumerable jokes about my breasts. Each time I’d laugh and blow it off. Yes, it wore me down. But I wanted to work. And it had happened on every show.
Except one. On that show, nothing like that happened. Ever.
When Michael Elias contacted me recently about the passing of Rich Eustis,...

It's not every day that you have a daily reminder of your childhood right outside of your office window, but then again, not everyone is Jason Bateman. It's a special kind of irony that Bateman has been in the entertainment industry for his entire life when you consider he's made a career of playing the everyday straight man. The former child star fell off the map for the better part of a decade, but the actor/director returned to Hollywood with a vengeance.
Bateman's comeback was kick-started in 2003 with a starring role in Fox's "Arrested Development" as Michael Bluth, the series' protagonist who guides his family through its many, many crises. Following the success of the comedy series, Bateman landed several supporting movie roles, followed by leading roles in films like "Identity Thief" and "Horrible Bosses." He recently re-invented himself in the dark Netflix series "Ozark," but in addition to acting,...

As much as "Ozark" depends on all-star showings from Laura Linney and Julia Garner, it could never work without Jason Bateman's performance. The desperation and coldness that he imbues in Marty Byrde are staples of the dark sense of humor that makes the show so compelling to watch. And as the Emmy-winning director of nine out of 44 "Ozark" episodes, Bateman's contribution to the show went well beyond acting.
Bateman began working as a child actor in 1980, playing the adopted son of the Ingalls family for 20 episodes in the late seasons of "Little House on the Prairie." As his TV career evolved, he tested out directing with one-episode jobs on sitcoms like "Valerie," "Family Matters," and "Arrested Development" in the '90s and 2000s, some of which he starred in and others where he was only in the crew.

Hollywood is an unforgiving place for children and teens, and there are plenty of cautionary tales that serve as evidence. For every Neil Patrick Harris, there seem to be a dozen who struggle. It's been proven time and time again: Hollywood is not a place where children thrive.
Fortunately, the statistics can be overcome. Director Ron Howard might as well be the flagbearer for child stars who transitioned to successful, well-adjusted adults in Hollywood. He might have had a leg up as both of his parents were in the industry, but Howard made his onscreen debut at the tender age of 1 in the film "Frontier Woman." As a child actor with a distinct mop of red hair and a freckled face, he was best known as Opie Taylor on "The Andy Griffith Show" and Richie Cunningham on "Happy Days."

Taylor Hawkins was sunshine incarnate. The late Foo Fighters drummer – also a songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist – had an unrivalled sense of positivity and joie de vivre. His megawatt smile could power a stadium show all of its own.
The first of two tribute concerts to Hawkins, who died aged 50 in March this year, does its utmost to summon that same energy. Gathered here at Wembley Stadium are some of Hawkins’s closest friends – the surviving Foos members, of course – family, collaborators and admirers, for a six-hour marathon of a show. Understandably, the mood that fills the 80,000-capacity venue is a strange one. Hawkins’s favourite songs are played ahead of the late-afternoon start time – Abba, Elo, George Michael – but no one feels like dancing just yet.

It’s hard out there for former child actors. Often, a lot have ended up tabloid fodder or have tragically died at a young age. Others have found a career on the reality show circuit -remember Vh-!’s “The Surreal Life” and “Celebrity Fit Club”? And the recent edition of The Food Network’s “Worst Cooks in America, Celebrity Edition” featured former child stars from the 1980s.
But transitioning to adult roles has been getting easier as witnessed in the 2022 Emmy nominations. Numerous nominees began their careers as child or teen actors including Jason Bateman (“Ozark”); Nicholas Braun (“Succession”); Kaley Cuoco (“The Flight Attendant”); Elle Fanning (“The Great”); Melanie Lynskey (“Yellow Jackets”); Will Poulter (“Dopesick”); Seth Rogen (“Pam & Tommy”); Juno Temple (“Ted Lasso”); Christopher Walken (“Severance”); Tyler James Williams (“Abbott Elementary”); Reese Witherspoon (“The Morning Show”); and Zendaya (“Euphoria”).
A lot of these actors started taking control of their careers at a young age.

This week, I talk to Neptune Frost co-directors American poet, musician, and actor Saul Williams, and actress, playwright Anisia Uzeyman. Frost had its world premiere last summer in the Directors’ Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival in 2021, before screening at Toronto and NYFF during fall of last year.
The film takes place amid the hilltops of Burundi, where a collective of computer hackers emerges from a mining community, the result of a romance between a miner and an intersex runaway. Set between states of being—past and present, dream and waking life, colonized and free, male and female, memory and prescience—Neptune Frost is a call to reclaim technology for progressive political ends. After attending the Cannes Film Festival in 2019 as a freelance film critic, I was excited to go this time as a film critic and reporter for Deadline. I knew that access would be different with a powerful platform and that my workload would double in size. Either way, I was prepared for the challenge. When walking down the Croisette on the way to the Palais de Festivals, the atmosphere wasn’t as welcoming as I’d hoped. As soon as I reached my destination, I noticed what was in store for me during that trip: microaggressions directed toward me because of my skin color.
According to the Miriam Webster dictionary, a microaggression is a comment or action that subtly and often unconsciously or unintentionally expresses a prejudiced attitude toward a marginalized group (such as a racial minority). Some of the incidents I experienced in 2019 Cannes fit the microaggression definition, but...

Robert Michael Nesmith, who died at the age of 78, is best known as the member of the Monkees who wore the wool cap, but also one of the band’s premiere songwriters. Besides providing several hits, the songs kickstarted the made-for-tv band into a self-producing, songwriting team.
The Monkees played their own instruments. Former child actors Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz weren’t initially proficient but were as eager to learn as any garage band. Musicians Nesmith and Peter Tork were hired as actors who knew how to ape The Beatles look in comedy films like A Hard Day’s Night and Help!.
Nesmith changed that. His song “The Girl I Knew Somewhere,” which was the B-side to the top 5 hit “A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You,” was the first song that had all four Monkees playing on it.

Monday’s episode of The Voice not only marked the beginning of Season 21’s Knockouts, it slid into the Mega Mentor’s seat Ed Sheeran (pre-positive Covid-19 test, obviously). And he quickly proved himself to be not only a savvy advisor to Blake Shelton, John Legend, Kelly Clarkson and Ariana Grande’s starstruck teams but also a right charming chap, too. One minute, he was playfully praising Blake’s dressing-room rendition of “Sweet Caroline,” the next he was cracking wise about how Yanks think that every Englishman drinks tea and knows the queen. Valerie Bertinelli is set as a lead opposite Demi Lovato in NBC’s single-camera comedy pilot Hungry, starring and executive produced by Lovato. The casting marks Bertinelli’s first series regular role since her six-season run on TV Land’s hit sitcom Hot In Cleveland. Hungry comes from Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner’s Hazy Mills, Sb Projects and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
Written and executive produced by Suzanne Martin, Hungry follows a group of friends who belong to a food-issues group helping one another as they look for love, success and the perfect thing in the fridge that’s going to make it all better.
Lovato’s Teddy is a talented food stylist who wants to have a healthy relationship with food and date men who are good for her – but, like so many of us – it’s a struggle.

And just like that – here comes spring. Amazon Prime‘s list of new releases for April 2021 isn’t as cheery as one would expect from the sunny season. But perhaps that’s by design – you should be outside anyway!
Amazon’s most prominent original series for April 2021 is undoubtedly Them from multi-hyphenate Lena Waithe. This horror anthology’s first season, subtitled “Covenant”, will center on a Black family in the 1950s who move from North Carolina to a white neighborhood in Los Angeles. It premieres on April 9. Given its name and premise, Them is drawing some (largely joke-y) comparisons to Jordan Peele’s Us on social media. But hey, the world could always use some more Us.

The 32nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards is bringing together the cast of “Glee” for the tenth anniversary of character Santana Lopez (portrayed by the late Naya Rivera) coming out as lesbian.
Demi Lovato, who played Santana’s girlfriend on the show, will introduce the special tribute, which will feature “Glee” cast members Jacob Artist, Chris Colfer, Darren Criss, Vanessa Lengies, Jane Lynch, Kevin McHale, Heather Morris, Matthew Morrison, Alex Newell, Amber Riley, Harry Shum Jr., Becca Tobin and Jenna Ushkowitz.
While on air, the series was nominated six times for outstanding comedy series, which it won in 2010 and 2011. Queer storylines were part of “Glee” from the beginning, most notably in the story arc of Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer), whose relationship with Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) ebbs and flows throughout much of the show.
