John Astin, Kristy Swanson and Benji Gregory were unable to reprise their roles for the sequel Bride of Boogedy (1987). Both Astin and Swanson were busy with film projects, and Gregory was filming the TV series ALF (1986). Their roles were re-cast with different actors.
Was originally envisioned by writer Michael Janover
as an Airplane! (1980) style comedy that was
watered down when Columbia Pictures rejected it and
Disney picked it up.
Michael Janover's original script was called 'Cheap Thrills'. It was a parody of horror films and written as a vehicle for Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong. When Disney picked the project, he toned down the humor.
Michael Janover got the 'boogedy' term from the segment 'The Ledge' from the film Cat's Eye (1985). In it, Robert Hays is forced by Kenneth McMillan to walk along a ledge on the top of a skyscraper and McMillan's character taunts him shouting 'Boogey! Boogey! Boogey!'
