People may be surprised to learn that staying out of the ocean won’t guarantee their safety from sharks. In fact, a dip in a river or pond could lead to an encounter with one of the most aggressive sharks in the world: the bull shark. Strangely enough, though, the Carcharhinus leucas doesn’t show up in sharksploitation movies anywhere near as much as its larger and more popular cousin, the great white. Many don’t even know of its existence until they hear of a sighting or attack in an unlikely place.
Jaws led to great whites becoming the face of shark horror. Of course, there are exceptions — Deep Blue Sea features bio-engineered mako sharks, and Syfy went through a period of unleashing one variety of mutant shark after another — yet as a whole, sharksploitation prefers great whites. Then in 2003, TBS Superstation mixed things up by having a bull...

Well, here we go again. We’re getting another sequel to a film that’s over 25 years old. That’s right; the 1988 film Cheerleader Camp, which we weren’t too keen on in our review, is getting a follow-up titled Cheerleader Camp:… Continue Reading →

Cheerleader Camp (1989)
Directed By: John Quinn
Written By: David Lee Fein, R.L. O’Keiff
Starring: Betsy Russell (Alison), Leif Garrett (Brent), Lucinda Dickey (Cory), Lorrie Griffin (Bonnie), George Buck Flower (Pop), Travis McKenna (Timmy), Teri Weigel (Pamela), Rebecca Ferratti (Theresa Salazar), Vickie Benson (Ms. Tipton), Jeff Prettyman (Sheriff Poucher), Krista Pflanzer (Suzy)
“Cheerleader Camp”, which has the alternate title “Bloody Pompoms”, is much better than some of the later slasher fare I have seen. The slasher boom was in the early 1980s but by the time the late 80s came around it seems the ideas were thin.
“Cheerleader Camp” feels like a strange version of “Friday the 13th” in many aspects. While I do like the movie as a whole, it does have its issues. It could also be that I have a soft spot for slasher films as they were the first...

The clean, crisp air; the smell of the campfire; the call of nature. (Wait! What?) Yes, those are all wonderful things we associate with summer camp. A time for young people to venture out on their own and have experiences they'll remember for the rest of their lives... even if that's only about another 25 minutes.
The upcoming film Camp Dread, starring Eric Roberts, rekindles all those great memories of summer camp horror movies past, and oh, how we love them.
After becoming the setting of some truly memorable films in the 80's, summer camp has forever been tagged as the perfect hunting ground for the slasher. It's secluded, it's quiet, and it's filled with poorly supervised camp residents and camp counselors. Is there a more perfect recipe for a bloody good time than that? I think not!
So where do we start? Of course with the counselors. Oh those irresponsible,...

One of the best things about horror film posters is the obligatory tagline. Some of them are catchy and increase your interest in watching the film, others are silly, some are unforgivably campy, and others are outright ridiculous. The best horror film poster blurbs, however, are typically a blend of all the aforementioned components. Many of our favorite taglines are almost a lampoon of themselves, but somehow, that has become part of the magic. It’s almost as if the worse the pun, the better the audience response. The heyday of the outlandish promo blurb was at its height when the slasher film was at its peak, but that’s not to say that contemporary horror cinema hasn’t brought us some dandies. With that in mind, we present to you 20 of our most favorite horror poster taglines from the 1970s to present. House "Horror has found a new home.

I grew up in the 1980s, when serial killers stalking summer camps defined the horror genre: Friday the 13th, Sleepaway Camp, Cheerleader Camp, The Burning. So to me, the Great Horror Campout was a long time coming.
Billed as an “immersive experience,” the Great Horror Campout is a 12-hour, overnight “camping trip” that puts you in the middle of the horrors that lurk in the woods. I do not like camping and I do not like wilderness, so I doubt that I could make it through the actual event. When I was offered a preview of the experience in a climate-controlled warehouse, I jumped at the chance.
Myself and a half-dozen journalists were asked to meet in Griffith Park in the heart of Los Angeles - already a scary proposition. Griffith Park is a massive state park built into the mountain, so there are lots of winding, multi-layered roads, none of which have names.

The fantastic thing about the VHS years is that the poster art was frequently hand drawn and frequently had very little or nothing to do with the actual film. If you picked a film based solely on the box cover, you had a pretty good chance of being disappointed or at least surprised. Distributors seemed to see a snazzy box cover as a good way to get some mileage out of a subpar film. That still goes on today, but it seems to happen less frequently and the artwork just isn’t the same. In spite of the trickery that duped more than a couple of horror fans in the ‘80s and early ‘90s, there are some terrific and legitimate films that have terribly misleading – albeit awesome – cover art. Forthat reason, we present to you ten shining examples of awesomely misleading film artwork. Chopping Mall If you were to take...

Let’s ruminate on where some of our favorite TV shows will end up in 2013.
American Horror Story
The show is a little bit of a trainwreck, so let’s take it all the way. I want the next season to be set in a summer camp in 1981. Yes, fans will complain it is a Friday the 13th/Sleepaway Camp/Cheerleader Camp/The Burning/etc. knock-off, but so what? Jessica Lange could be the head of the camp, and in addition to a machete-wielding maniac on the loose, you could have a very human bullying story, and a very non-human “creature in the lake” story. Maybe Jessica Lange is in cahoots with the maniac and they are serving the campers the flesh of the victims.
My second choice for the next American Horror Story? A haunted roller disco, circa 1974.
Dexter
I think that Deb, after shooting Laguerta in cold blood,...

I miss low-grade slasher flicks like Cheerleader Camp and Sleepaway Camp, and it appears the makers of the new movie The Cheerleaders Must Die! feel the same way. Just yesterday, the production met its Kickstarter goal of $7,000 to hire a casting director and a story board artist. Congrats to everyone involved!
“Most of the heavy lifting has already been done: we’ve assembled a great creative team, we have secured distribution from National Lampoon, and we have started to reach out to name talent – actors and actresses to help bring these characters to life. We are still finalizing production financing and while that’s being worked on we need money to keep the ball rolling.”
The cheerleaders of Armadillo High party hard and cheer harder but they feud amongst themselves more than with rival teams. Things really heat up with the arrival of the new girl, Tammi, who, unbeknown to anyone,...

Cheerleader Camp Over the years there has been plenty of annoying horror film characters for various reasons. You had Katherine Kamhi in Sleepaway Camp. She played such a good something that rhymes with witch that you would think she was one in real life. So when she got hers in Sleepaway Camp, it was well deserved! And wouldn't you be tempted to knock off someone that treated you like that? Or how about Giallo from Dario Argento. That woman, who was being held hostage, had so many opportunities to escape and get away, that she eventually became downright annoying. So much so that I would knock her off myself and end the pain that viewers sitting through that film had to endure. So c'mon, admit it, there's definitely been a character you wish you could go knock off yourself. That special someone you was rooting against. My pick goes to.

Almost one year ago, when we launched at Big Daddy, one of our first posts was about 10 horror films in need of a DVD or Blu-Ray release. The Nesting and Twice Dead which both made the list are now either out on DVD or about to be released. Other titles that made the list included The Pack, Night Warning, Massacre at Central High, Dance of the Damned, Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice, Deadly Blessing, The Kindred and Killer Party. With this second annual edition, we hope to spotlight more horror films that have fallen through the cracks. Titles that haven't been released beyond VHS (with the exception of one, that has only been released to VOD) that need the attention of us horror fans and distributors to make these titles readily available for our horror movie watching enjoyment.

Ah, the 1980s. Big hair, flashy clothes, and that new TV channel that only shows music videos. Exploitation films too were changing. Gone were the Excorsist- and Omen-inspired horror films of the 70s. Biker movies were passe. And socially relevant nurse and teacher dramas were being replaced by teen comedies and a new type of scary movie: the slasher film. In 1985, New World Pictures released Out Of Control, a somewhat strange combination of Lord Of The Flies and a John Hughes movie that is harder to classify. In some ways the perfect drive-in movie, Out Of Control contains violent action, teen romance, sex, nudity, and pop music. But there is an undercurrent of weirdness to the film that, intentional or not, implies some deeper meaning behind the exploitive aspects and makes it interesting to watch for its details. The Asylum are (in)famous for their ‘mockbuster’ releases. Essentially low budget versions of Hollywood blockbusters these have such memorable names as The Terminators and Transmorphers. Recently though The Asylum appear to have been branching out more with new lines such as a string of sex comedies (including #1 Cheerleader Camp and Milf) and with 8213: Gacy House they have an original horror film, albeit a pretty derivative one.
8213: Gacy House is presented as a found footage film and The Asylum have stuck to this conceit with the packaging and everything on their website. The DVD is allegedly actual crime scene footage edited into a narrative and released by The Asylum. The DVD even states:
Be Advised! This is not a Hoax, nor a Reenactment. This is actual crime scene footage released by law enforcement.
None of this is obviously true, as a cursory internet search and a bit of common sense will tell you,...

A plethora of wimpy Jason Voorhees and Michael Meyers wannabes has submerged the slasher sub-genre in a swampy, leech-infested lake leaving me with no other choice but to accept the inevitable: my once immortal horror heroes have sadly been plagued with mortality by much tamer modern day manifestations of the macabre. Independent writer/director and owner & founder of production company Kerosene Films, Kerry Beyer takes a playful stab at re-inventing and ultimately redefining some of the greatest monumental machete-wielding maniacs ever to slash their ways through horror history.
