The CGI roach scenes were filmed using the same graphics effects engine from Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) and Jurassic Park (1993).
The feature film debut of voice actor Billy West. While West had extensive voiceover work in several TV cartoon and live action shows, live action TV movies, animated shorts, music videos, video games, and commercials before this film's release, Joe's Apartment (1996) was actually the first theatrically-released film in which West acted in any capacity. He would provide the voice of Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd in Space Jam (1996) later that year.
This film is based on the 1992 short Joe's Apt. (1992), which frequently aired on MTV during commercial breaks. Mark Rosenthal, who played the original Joe in the latter film, provided the voice for one of the cockroaches in this movie.
