Strictly Come Dancing has returned to TV screens across the UK. The series has been part of viewers' lives for two decades and, on its 20th anniversary, it's back with a brand new series. And that brand new series certainly opened things on an unexpectedly shocking note, as last week's second outing - which featured the first elimination of the series - saw Tom and Nadiya eliminated despite being in the middle of the Leaderboard the night before.
This week, we had the annual Movie Night Special, which had some stunning routines from movies such as George of the Jungle, Harry Potter, Rocketman, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and so much more. But who stood out this week, and who struggled to keep up with the numbers?
Here are the Strictly spoilers, results, and scores from the Week 3 Saturday night Movies Special.

It's bizarre to think if the 2000 "X-Men" movie had instead come out in 2024, there would be people complaining about Hugh Jackman not being ripped enough to play Wolverine. Or if "Smallville" premiered now, someone would probably make a crack about Tom Welling having a "Dad Bod." (If you don't believe me: This is what Jason Momoa looked like when he got body-shamed for having the build of an "average" person.) It's gotten to the point where, when Josh Harnett goes shirtless for a scene in M. Night Shyamalan's thriller "Trap," it's almost shocking that he looks closer to somebody who's actually physically capable of doing the things his character is supposed to be able to do in the film -- not someone who's severely dehydrated and been fasting all day to make their abs pop.

As Twisters blows into cinemas worldwide, this week’s film quiz includes some questions about weather on film…
In summer 2024, UK weather has been as unpredictable as ever, which is a fine hook for a Twisters-adjacent quiz about movie weather. As well as seeing if you know your Little Miss Sunshine from your Rain Man, this week’s batch of 30 questions covers subjects such as movie-star parents, awards-worthy performances, and film-to-tv spin-offs. Thinking cap and quizzing trousers are a must, but dress for all weather as usual!
Once you’ve completed all three rounds, you’ll find a link to a separate post with the correct answers at the bottom of this post. As always, this is all just for fun, but please let us know how you did in the comments (scores out of 30 this week!) and give us any other lovely feedback. Come rain or shine, we...

Hollywood is a constant churning mill of content with competitiveness rooted at its core. A striking example of this is the current summer box office that has witnessed a tide of resurgence following the release of the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence starrer Bad Boys: Ride or Die. The fourth installment in the franchise holds immense importance, at least for the former entertainment stalwart, who is marking his biggest return to the big screens after the 2022 Oscars debacle.

Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy would’ve had a different actor playing a crucial role in the film. During a recent interview, director Stephen Sommers revealed that he tried to cast a famous Star Wars actor in the film. The character of Ardeth Bay in the film was initially written for an older actor and Sommers tried to cast Darth Vader actor James Earl Jones in the role. The director also considered Roscoe Lee Browne in the role, but both actors were busy with other projects.
Oded Fehr played the role of Ardeth Bay in The Mummy franchise
Sommers then had to rewrite the character to be played by a much younger actor and cast Israeli actor Oded Fehr in the role. The character returned once again in the sequel film, The Mummy Returns, in 2001.

"'The Mummy' isn't really trying to scare you – it's trying to entertain you." This is what /Film's Chris Evangelista lovingly wrote of 1999's "The Mummy" in 2021. Directed by Stephen Sommers and starring Brendan Fraser as the swashbuckling Rick O'Connell, the film became a somewhat unexpected hit, so much so that it ended up being one of the highest-grossing films of 1999 overall. Critics were a bit mixed on it in its day. It was an action/adventure film, the likes of which Hollywood had released many times before. Be that as it may, a film designed purely to entertain (rather than to scare) resonated with audiences in a big way. It was pulpy lightning in a bottle.

Up until recently I worked the night shift in a hotel, so I know how creepy it can feel at times, especially when you’re getting used to the place with all of the building’s odd little noises and quirks. That’s the position Gwen finds herself in.
Recently moved into the area and in need of money, she’s answered an ad for a temporary overnight position at the All Tucked Inn. The owner Teddy, who seems to be making his story up as he goes along, tells her the woman who regularly does the job has been sidelined with medical issues. He’d love to stay and help, but he has a date. But there’s nothing to worry about, this is a quiet, peaceful place where nothing ever happens.

After years in the industry, Brendan Fraser was awarded an Oscar in 2023, recognizing the actor’s exceptional acting chops. In recognition of his role as Charlie in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, the American-Canadian actor, 55, received his first Academy Award for Best Actor. He was the first Canadian to win the Academy Award for Best Actor for his starring role as an obese gay man, which brought him critical acclaim and many other honors.

The Gordy subplot in Jordan Peele's "Nope" is distressing for many reasons, not least of which is that history is filled with incidents of real-life film and TV actors nearly meeting their maker at the hands -- or paws -- of a startled non-human costar. We're not as far removed from such real-world incidents as you might assume, either. During her "Hot Ones" episode in 2022, Leslie Mann recalled having to share a "little tiny space" with an actual lion on the "George of the Jungle" set 25 years earlier and realizing that "if he just jumps at me, I'm dead" and nobody could do a damn thing to save her.

As far as '90s comedies go, "Encino Man" is up there as one of the seemingly forgotten flicks that die-hard fans are thirsting with nostalgia over. The film helped establish Pauly Shore as a genuine movie star and it certainly doesn't hurt that both Sean Astin ("The Lord of the Rings") and Brendan Fraser ("The Mummy") have gone on to become cherished actors in their own right. It's an of-its-time comedy that remains loved to this day. But could a sequel be on the horizon?

After saying that he’d be very picky about his next role after winning an Oscar, Brendan Fraser has found it. He will star in “Rental Family” for Searchlight Pictures and from filmmaker Hikari, best known for her work on “Beef.”
Fraser in “Rental Family” will star as a down-and-out actor living in Tokyo who is hired as a token American guy for a Japanese rental family company providing professional stand-in services.
Hikari has been developing “Rental Family” since 2019, and she also co-wrote the film with Stephen Blahut. The film will begin principal photography this spring in Japan. No release date has been announced.
Eddie Vaisman and Julia Lebedev of Sight Unseen, which produced this year’s Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner “A Thousand and One,” are producing “Rental Family.” Hikari and Shin Yamaguchi, who produced her prior feature “37 Seconds” in 2019, will also produce. Blahut and Tomo Koizumi will executive produce.

As confirmed by Deadline, Richard Roundtree, the groundbreaking star of the original "Shaft" franchise has died as a result of pancreatic cancer. He was 81. Roundtree was a gifted athlete who played for New Rochelle High School's nationally-ranked and undefeated football team but later dropped out of college after he was scouted by Ebony Fashion Fair founder Eunice W. Johnson and began modeling for companies like Duke hair products and Salem cigarettes. A few years later, he joined the Negro Ensemble Company theater group in New York City, where he became a fast leading man. This led to a successful career in front of the camera, where Roundtree would become colloquially known as the "first Black action hero."
He appeared in a number of Blaxploitation films in the 1970s, but he became a cinematic icon as detective John Shaft in the films "Shaft," "Shaft's Big Score!," "Shaft in Africa," and the short-lived series adaptation.

Richard Roundtree, who broke ground with his signature role in the Shaft movie franchise, died October 24 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer with his family at his bedside. He was 81.
Roundtree’s career spanned five decades and included everything from his most popular blaxploitation role to a very early appearance on As the World Turns in 1956 to being a Season 2 main cast member on Ava DuVernay’s OWN series Cherish the Day last year.
He is best known for playing detective John Shaft in the 1971 action thriller and its sequels, Shaft’s Big Score! (1972) and Shaft in Africa (1973) as well as the short-lived 1973 Shaft TV series.
For his performance in the original film, Roundtree was nominated for a New Star of the Year Golden Globe and hailed as the first Black action hero. More importantly, the films made Shaft a cultural hero, a symbol of Black power onscreen, at the box office and beyond.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro may be the Oscar winners headlining Martin Scorsese‘s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” but there’s actually a third among the supporting cast. So let’s take a look back at Brendan Fraser‘s journey to winning Best Actor for “The Whale” earlier this year.
Adapted from Samuel D. Hunter‘s 2012 stage play, “The Whale” starred Fraser as Charlie, a 600-pound English teacher who isolates himself from the world but is given a chance at redemption as he attempts to restore his relationship with his estranged daughter, Ellie (Sadie Sink). The film had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on September 4, 2022, where it got a standing ovation. From that moment on, experts started to pencil Fraser in as a front-runner for the Best Actor Oscar.

Taylor will star as Dr. Eleanor Mayer, a highly acclaimed psychiatrist known for her modern-Freudian approach, in a recurring role. In this clip, she confronts Maggie Siff’s own highly motivated psychiatrist/performance coach character, Wendy.
“It is no secret that you are extraordinary, Wendy. But I think you can be even better,” Dr. Mayer says in the clip. “I would like to help you with that.”
“Thank you, but I’m not in the market for a performance coach,” Wendy fires back.
“I was suggesting therapy. Isn’t that why you’re here?” Dr. Mayer asks.

Actors often refer to their bodies and voices as "their instrument," and go to great lengths to completely transform themselves to more accurately portray a character. Sometimes that transformation involves heavy use of prosthetics, while other times, actors will completely rebuild their bodies to play a role. These extreme bodily transformations are continued subjects of debate, with actors like Brendan Fraser admitting that the extremes he went through to achieve his chiseled appearance in "George of the Jungle" legitimately messed with his brain chemistry, while Kumail Nanjiani was very candid about the way the public responded to his superhero transformation before Marvel's "Eternals."
There are so many intersections to consider when analyzing the ethics of an actor's physical overhaul, but if there's one thing to take solace in, it's that actors are being far more transparent about what their process is like than ever before. It is unrealistic for us...

Brendan Fraser's richly deserved comeback crested last March when he won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale." It was the end of a long, hard road that began in the 2000s with a messy divorce, an alleged sexual assault at the groping hands of the then-president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and a deep depression caused by the death of his mother. Fraser had gone from being one of the most exciting talents of his generation to a C-level movie star.
That generation included Chris O'Donnell, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck, all three of whom co-starred with Fraser in the 1992 antisemitism drama "School Ties." They were all often in competition for the same roles, but they eventually made their own way in the industry. Fraser's square-jawed good looks and comedic gifts landed him leading roles in "The Mummy" and "George of the Jungle,...

Movie director and Oscar-winner James Cameron managed to break his own box-office records when he delivered Avatar to the big screen.
But before it hit theaters, Cameron used Brendan Fraser’s popular hit as a sort of guinea pig for Avatar.
Brendan Fraser originally thought the script for ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ was ‘daft’ Brendan Fraser | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Fraser once had a starring role in the sci-fi feature Journey to the Center of the Earth. The movie was based on a short story by French novelist Jules Verne. In the adaptation, Fraser played a professor who attempts to escape a cavern he finds himself trapped inside of. On his way out, Fraser’s professor encounters several creatures and obstacles that threaten his life.
Fraser admitted that when he first received the script, it was a concept he didn’t think much of.
“Verne was arguably science fiction’s creator.

Harrison Ford is a film veteran that many actors look up to, including recent Oscar-winner Brendan Fraser. But this meant actually working with Ford could be a nerve-racking ordeal that caused him to miss a few lines.
So Ford came up with an innovative way to help his co-star with his dialogue.
Brendan Fraser asked Harrison Ford about his ‘Brass Balls Award’ before he was cast in their film ‘Extraordinary Measures’ Brendan Fraser | Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic
Ford and Fraser would cross paths in the 2010 feature Extraordinary Measures. But the two originally met each other a couple of years prior to filming. The Whale star first ran into his idol on stage at the Spike TV awards.
“I was selling mummy warriors and he was selling crystal skulls. It was my duty, my obligation, to present him with Spike TV’s Brass Balls Award,” he once said in an interview with Vulture.

Before his career and personal life were thrown off course, Brendan Fraser was a promising leading man throughout the 1990s. Now, Fraser is back where he should’ve been all along, sharing the screen and the spotlight with other big-name actors. His small role in the cult classic Now and Then isn’t his most memorable performance, but Fraser’s presence in the movie is noteworthy because of who he replaced for the character. Leonardo DiCaprio was set to be in Now and Then before dropping out. Nearly three decades later and after wildly different trajectories, Fraser and DiCaprio will share screen time in one of 2023’s most highly anticipated films.

For his role as Charlie in The Whale, Brendan Fraser took home the Oscar for best actor at Sunday night’s Academy Awards ceremony.
Fraser was a prominent actor in the 90s and early 00s, starring in blockbuster films like George of the Jungle (1997) and The Mummy trilogy (1999-2008).
He starred in fewer films from the late 00s to 10s due to health issues and news that broke out of an alleged sexual assault committed against him in 2003 by Philip Berk, the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association at the time.
However, he experienced a career resurgence when Steven Soderbergh cast him in No Sudden Move (2021) and Darren Aronofsky threw a “creative lifeline” to him in the form of a leading role in The Whale.

Brendan Fraser is the man of the moment.
At the Oscars ceremony on Sunday night (12 March), the actor, 54, completed his career comeback with a Best Actor win for his role as a man with life-threatening obesity in Darren Aronofsky’s divisive drama The Whale.
Fraser’s portrayal had previously earned him standing ovations at film festivals in Venice and Toronto, and saw him receive the best reviews of his career. Read The Independent’s take here.
His recent success comes after some years out of the spotlight. Fraser first broke out in the early 1990s with the comedy Encino Man and the drama School Ties, before going on to become a household name for George of the Jungle and The Mummy trilogy.
He also did dramatic turns in Gods and Monsters, The Quiet American and 2006 Best Picture winner Crash.

All four acting categories were won by veteran performers who have never been nominated – as Michelle Yeoh put it: ‘Don’t let anyone tell you you are past your prime’
Oscars 2023: Everything Everywhere All at Once triumphs with major sweepThe full list of winners
It is a truism to say that the Academy loves a comeback, but at this year’s Oscars it reached a fever pitch: all four acting awards were won by screen veterans who, until now, had never won – or even been nominated for – an Academy Award.
There was Brendan Fraser, who broke out in roles such as a reanimated Neanderthal in Encino Man (1992) and a lovable woodwose in George of the Jungle (1997), before cementing himself as the defining hunk of the 90s with his windswept explorer in 1999’s The Mummy.

‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ was named best picture at the 95th Academy Awards, capping off an improbable awards season run by winning the movie business’s highest honour. The film, an adventure about a Chinese-American laundromat owner grappling with an IRS audit and inter-dimensional attackers, earned seven statues, including original screenplay and directing honours for its creators Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (collectively known as the Daniels), reports ‘Variety’.
The victory is a big one for A24, the indie studio that pushed the zany film to an impressive $100 million at the box office, a stunning achievement at a time when the market for arthouse movies has shrivelled.
The studio also managed the rare feat of nabbing all four acting honours — three of which were won by ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ and one by ‘The Whale’.

Brendan Fraser has won the best-actor Oscar for “The Whale,” a transformative role in which he revived a career that was once so bright.
“I started in this business 30 years ago and things didn’t come easily to me,” said Fraser, breathing heavily. “I just want to say thank you for this acknowledgement.”
Fraser was one of five first-time nominees in the category, the first time that had happened since 1935. Fraser beat out Austin Butler of “Elvis,” Colin Farrell of “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Paul Mescal of “Aftersun,” and Bill Nighy of “Living.”

After 20 long years, Brendan Fraser made a triumphant return to the Oscars on Sunday evening. The 54-year-old star - who is nominated for best actor for his performance in "The Whale" - was joined by his girlfriend, Jeanne Moore, and two of his sons, Holden, 18, and Leland, 16, whom he shares with ex-wife Afton Smith.
Of their dad's Oscar nomination, Fraser's sons told Laverne Cox on the E! red carpet, per People, "We are unbelievably proud. Over the moon." Noticeably absent was Fraser's eldest son, Griffin, who maintains a life outside of the spotlight. The last time Fraser attended the Academy Awards was in 2003.
Fraser's return to the big screen has been highly lauded, though "The Whale" has been criticized for its portrayal of fatphobia. Fraser began his career as an action hero, playing George of the Jungle in 1997 and starring in the Mummy trilogy from 1999 to 2008. But his career stalled in the 2000s,...

Remember the “McConaussaince” of 2013? If you’re reading this website, of course you do. Gold Derby founder Tom O’Neil referred to it as the time when Matthew McConaughey went from “surfer dude to serious actor” and was justly rewarded by the Academy Awards for his gut-wrenching performance in the docu-drama “Dallas Buyers Club.” A decade later, awards watchers are in the midst of another well-publicized career redemption, this time for Brendan Fraser. Hmm, how does “Fraserssaince” sound?

Exclusive: Brendan Fraser, an Oscar Best Actor nominee this year for A24’s The Whale, has signed with CAA. He had been represented by the agency several times in the past, including in the early 2000s and early 2010s.
According to sources, Fraser left Gersh, where he had been for seven and a half years, in early January and had been without an agent since then.
He continues to be managed by Brillstein Entertainment Partners and also repped by Felker Toczek Suddleson Abramson.
Fraser was one of the biggest action stars of the late 1990s and early 2000s with The Mummy franchise and George of the Jungle before largely falling off the radar for the past decade.
He is enjoying a career resurgence right now with Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale. Fraser has won the Critics Choice and SAG Award for his performance, among other accolades.

It’s great to see the Brenaissance happen. Oscar nominee Brendan Fraser has been a joy to watch in movies since 1992’s Encino Man. Although the Oscars tend to overlook comedy, Fraser has done strong dramatic work long before The Whale. However, it’s great to see his performance in The Whale recognized.

The 1998 drama Gods and Monsters depicted filmmaker James Whale (Ian McKellan)’s relationship with a gardener (Fraser) at the end of his life. This is decades after Whale directed Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, as he ensnares the young man into sexual games.
Writer/director Bill Condon won the Oscar for his screenplay. McKellan and Lynne Redgrave got nominations.

The Whale is a movie directed by Darren Aronofsky starring Brendan Fraser whom we guess will win the Oscar… and an excellent Sadie Sink,
This movie is based on a play by Samuel D. Hunter.

I don’t know about you, but I spent my Valentine’s Day evening onstage at the Arlington Theatre for the Santa Barbara Film Festival’s American Riviera Award tribute to Brendan Fraser. I have to say it was definitely a love affair between the sold-out audience in that huge venue and the Oscar-, SAG- and BAFTA-nominated and Critics Choice Award-winning star of The Whale.

Sbiff produces these elaborate two-hour tributes to various Oscar nominees each year, and this year’s crop has included Cate Blanchett, Angela Bassett, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Colin Farrell & Brendan Gleeson together. I have been doing these for the past two decades and this one was so much fun to do, and you couldn’t find a more deserving or genuinely nice recipient.

“It’s a film that always had the intention to change hearts and minds,” Brendan Fraser said of The Whale, for which he is nominated for the best actor Oscar, ahead of receiving the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s American Riviera Award on Tuesday night.
The popular star, who was greeted with huge applause by the Santa Barbarians who packed the historic Arlington Theater, discussed his life and career with Deadline‘s Pete Hammond, who described the actor’s recent resurgence, after several years out of the spotlight that he had occupied since the early 1990s, as “the Brenaissance.”
Coming from an “itinerate family” that spent considerable time in Europe, Fraser said that seeing plays in London as a kid hooked him on the idea of becoming an actor. He studied at a conservatory in Seattle before heading to L.A. in 1991, where he was asked by Sherry Lansing...

1992 was a breakout year for Brendan Fraser, who demonstrated his impressive range with star turns in the cult comedy hit "Encino Man" and the hard-hitting drama "School Ties." Fraser continued that trend of displaying serious dramatic abilities alongside his talent for playing what he once told GQ are "naif characters" and "fish out of water" types in '90s comedies like "George of the Jungle" and "Blast From the Past." Then there was the unfortunate "Dudley Do-Right" which signaled the end of that particular golden age.
With his resurgence in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale," Fraser has reminded us all of his impressive dramatic talents. But for many, it was those outsider characters, stumbling wide-eyed through worlds they didn't fully understand, that defined the actor's appeal. And while "George Of The Jungle" was perhaps the biggest hit within that particular Fraser subgenre, affectionately termed his "himbo" movies, it all started with "Encino Man.

When you think about George of the Jungle, Brendan Fraser‘s ripped body is probably the first thing that comes to mind. The 1997 movie is one of Fraser’s most beloved films for several reasons. While the actor delivered a great performance as the fish-out-of-water George, he was uncomfortable filming the movie.

George of the Jungle is a comedy film based on an animated TV series of the same name, which borrows from Edgar Rice Burroughs’ creation Tarzan. The movie follows a primitive man (Fraser) raised by apes in the African jungle who falls in love with a San Francisco heiress Ursula.

Brendan Fraser's ongoing Brenaissance (sorry) continues as the once-reclusive star re-emerges into the spotlight. Much of Hollywood's newly rediscovered love for Fraser stems from his Oscar-nominated turn in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale," but he's also got the benefit of '90s nostalgia and just being a charming guy working in his favor. That effortless charm was put to good use back in the '90s when Fraser was handed starring role after starring role. From his breakthrough in 1992's "Encino Man," which established his ongoing penchant for playing "naif characters," to 1997's "George of The Jungle," and his biggest hit "The Mummy," Fraser had a gentle and endearing demeanor that proved popular with audiences of all ages. Sometimes.
Other times, it didn't work that way. "George of The Jungle" proved a hit for Disney in '97, bringing in 105 million at the box office on a 55 million budget. Two...
