Juha from 1937 is the second film version of Juhani Aho's great novel.It is directed by Nyrki Tapiovaara, and this was his first movie.He only got to do five until Winter War took his life at way too young.Last Saturday marked the 100th birthday of Tapiovaara.An interesting fact of this movie is, that Juhani Aho's son Heikki Aho and Björn Soldan were there making this movie.Heikki was the producer while Björn was working as the cinematographer.Both of them were also writing the script and editing it.Hannes Närhi gives a really good performance as Juha.Irma Seikkula is fantastic as Marja.Walle Saikko is terrific as Shemeikka.Tuulikki Paananen is wonderful as Anja.This movie is very well made of Aho's book.The drama works, the whole plot line with Marja leaving with Shemeikka and having his baby.It's all brilliantly portrayed here.And those shots of the wild rapids look amazing.Tapiovaara really knew his game.
