Daniel Craig took over as James Bond 007 in Casino Royale. It was very nearly the best Bond movie of the lot...
This one? Very nearly the best Bond of the lot. Building the entire film around one card game is a masterstroke: the simplicity of the premise allows room for the Bond legend to grow. Umpteen moments of inspiration clamour for attention; Bond inventing the Vesper Martini is a personal favourite. Meanwhile, makers of blue swimming trunks must bow down before the DVD every morning - the collective 'phwoar' as Daniel Craig emerges from the sea echoed around cinemas across the world. Someone doesn’t skip the gym.

With TV shows on the decline and facing a troubled future (and mark my words, virtual reality is a fad) indie filmmakers are now at the forefront of a new media landscape. But there are plenty of reasons to make indie films besides being on the cutting edge — let's take a look at why so many of our most talented youngsters are turning to indie film… Read More: How This Teenager Landed an Oscar-Nominated Actor to Star in His Film 1. To become your own film marketer and entrepreneur! The most exciting part about making indie films nowadays is that the actual movie is not what's most important. It's the marketing and business side that's truly essential. To quote this article on The Death of the Artist — And the Birth of the Creative Entrepreneur (The Atlantic), "we don't have to worry about the art anymore, we can just be business...

Do you have an Oscar pool going? No? You're not a compulsive gambler like half of the People staffers? That surprises us. Well, if you're not the betting type, please excuse this very important inside information we have from Facebook. The monolithic site looked at mentions of the nominated actors, actresses and films over the two weeks preceding the ceremony and shared the data with People. Below, here's who Facebook's 750 million-plus users think are going to win - or, failing that, who should win by popular vote - at the Oscars. Best Picture1. American Sniper2. Selma3. Birdman4. Saturday afternoon, the National Society of Film Critics, "made up of many of the country’s most distinguished movie critics," announced the winners of its annual "Best of" vote. Critical darlings came out on top, with Jean-Luc Godard’s 3-D film "Goodbye to Language" prevailing in the Best Picture category. The Nsfc’s picks offer a selection of Oscar sure-things and outsider alternatives. After debuting at Cannes, "Goodbye to Language" trickled in to a few American theaters. Without any Best Foreign Language Film representation (France went with "Saint Laurent"), the film was destined for place on the fringes of the season. Leave it to Nsfc to come through for art. On top of Best Picture, Godard’s film earned love in the Director and Cinematography categories. With Patricia Arquette and J.K. Simmons picking up their 18,000th Supporting Actor wins, Timothy Spall, under-lauded for his work in "Mr. Turner," won Best Actor.

Colombian filmmaker, Ciro Guerra announced that his next film,"Embrace of the Serpent”, due out next year, will star U.S. actor Brionne Davis (“Savaged”) and Belgium’s Jan Bijvoet, the lead in Cannes Competition entry “Borgman” a really creepy dark comedy. Two other stars are non-pro actors, Nilbio Torres, from the Cubeo Vaupes people, and Antonio Bolivar, one of the last of the Ocainas. Both are from tribes living in the Amazon where this film will shoot in Mitu, San Jose del Guaviare and Puerto Inirida. As in his previous film “The Wind Journeys”, landscape will play a major role. “Embrace of the Serpent” draws inspiration from the travel journals of German ethnologist Theodor Koch-Grunberg and American Richard Evans Schultes, a celebrated pioneer researcher into indigenous peoples’ use of plants.
His "The Wind Journeys" was produced by our German friends Roman Paul and Gerhard Meixner at Razor Film Production, by Burning Blue's prolific Diana Bustamente -- who is now also heading the Carthagena Film Festival. It received some funds from Films From the South in Norway. It premiered in 2009 Cannes Un Certain Regard and was sold by Paris’ Elle Driver to 19 countries including Film Movement for North America, Madman for Australia, Eye, Film 1 and Sundance Channel for The Netherlands, Interior 13 Cine for Mexico, Cine Ojo for Argentina, Rcn CIne and Cineplex for Colombia, Camera for Denmark, Arthaus for Norway.
Guerra's next project "Taganga” was chosen to be in the Coproduction Forum in Los Cabos this past November. "Taganga" is about a fisherman from a small village by the Colombian coast where many foreign-owned scuba diving centers have been established. A new law requiring local fisherman to change the motors of their boats forces him to earn quick money, so he chooses to dynamite to fish. The owner of the largest scuba diving center opposes this use of explosives. When the fisherman receives a death threat if he continues the dynamiting of fish, he assumes the center's owner is behind the threat. In order to prove it, he begins a series of fateful actions.

Though Circuit underdogs "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Inherent Vice" came close to the top prize, the Toronto Film Critics Association followed suit on Tuesday when it named Richard Linklater’s "Boyhood" as the best film of 2014. Collectively, the group called it "a cinematic masterpiece that evokes beauty in life and the inevitable passage of time," adding an honor to Linklater for his "singular achievement." Additional Tfca awards include another Best Actor win for Tom Hardy in "Locke" and a much-needed nod to Isao Takahata’s stunning animated drama "The Tale of the Princess Kaguya." Along with its award winners, Tfca named Denis Villeneuve’s "Enemy," Michael Dowse’s "The F Word," and Xavier Dolan’s "Mommy" as its three finalists for the Rogers Best Canadian Film Award. “In an exceptional year for Canadian cinema, we’ve chosen three boldly directed films that are so dissimilar it’s almost hard...

It may have been largely shut out of the Academy Awards, but the Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis" got at least one more Best Picture honor to round out its awards season, as the International Cinephile Society today named it the best of 2013. The group of over 80 film journalists, academics and industry professionals -- of which yours truly is a member -- also handed the film wins for Best Original Screenplay, Best Ensemble and Best Actor for Oscar Isaac, who tied with "The Wolf of Wall Street" star Leonardo DiCaprio. Also taking a quartet of awards was "Blue is the Warmest Color," which won for Best Foreign Language Film, Actress, Supporting Actress and Adapted Screenplay, and finished second to "Davis" in the Best Picture vote. Interestingly, Alfonso Cuaron took yet another Best Director win (alongside ones for cinematography and editing), though "Gravity" only placed seventh in the Best Picture vote.

’12 Years a Slave’: 2013 movie about slavery in the American South is Best Film of the year for some U.S. critics’ groups (photo: Chiwetel Ejiofor in ’12 Years a Slave’) Directed by Steve McQueen and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave remains one of the favorites — perhaps the favorite 2013 release — among U.S.-based critics’ groups. Below is the list of winners from four of those: the Austin Film Critics Association, the Southeastern Film Critics Association, the Florida Film Critics Circle, and the Las Vegas Film Critics Society. Their winners were announced within the last week or so. McQueen’s slavery drama was the top choice of three of the aforementioned groups. The one exception was the Austin Film Critics, who went for Spike Jonze’s Her, in which Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with a computer with Scarlett Johansson’s voice. In the acting categories, 12 Years a Slave‘s...

According to director Jose Padilha it is. Padila was first brought aboard the MGM remake of Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop when Darren Aronofsky became disassociated with the project. Padilha spoke earlier with Film 1, revealing why it is important to remake this classic film from 1987. "I love the sharpness and political tone of RoboCop , and I think that such a film is now urgently needed. But I will not repeat what Verhoeven has done so clearly…...

I really don’t care who ends up directing the “Robocop” remake — I’m automatically opposed to the production. I know that sounds extreme, but, hey, I’m a fanboy. It’s what we do. Paul Verhoeven’s action-packed satire is one of my all-time favorite films, and the idea that someone wants to retool the material instantly boils my blood. That having been said, I’m still curious to how this production unfolds, so I’ll end up following it despite my somewhat misguided ire. Director Jose Padiha recently spoke with the Dutch website Film 1, where he revealed his plans for the project. Here’s a translation of the conversation, courtesy of Joblo.com: I love the sharpness and political tone of RoboCop, and I think that such a film is now urgently needed. But I will not repeat what Verhoeven has done so clearly and strongly. Instead...

'Elite Squad' director, José Padilha is the man to bring 'RoboCop' to a new generation. As Variety reports, his most recent film, 'Elite Squad 2: The Enemy Within' will be up for an Oscar in the foreign language category. The film has been very well received, earning over $61 million in Brazil, and holding a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. With an action film of his fairing so well, the reason for Padilha landing the 'RoboCop' gig is becoming more and more apparent. The director recently spoke with foreign website, Film 1 about his vision for bringing the venerable sci-fi to a new generation. The translated text reads: "I love the sharpness and political tone of RoboCop , and I think that such a film is now urgently needed. After three features films and a Canadian series, you could argue whether the world needs another Robocop right now. Paul Verhoeven's film was certainly an aggressive and honest product of its time, but really? A remake? Director Jose Padilha feels the time to strike is now. He's the guy MGM brought aboard the redo after Darren Aronofsky bowed out and based on Padilha's comments in a recent interview with Film 1, it seems he's putting a lot more thought and care into development than one might think. He tells Film 1 (translation courtesy of the /Film gents), "I love the sharpness and political tone of RoboCop , and I think that such a film is now urgently needed. It is 8.30am on a Saturday morning. Normally at this time on a Saturday I’d be in the catatonic state that customarily precedes a hangover. But not today. Today I am fresh-faced and awake, for today I am embarking on the Stathamathon, a gruelling eight-hour marathon of ludicrously explosive action movies starring the balding Brit bruiser Jason Statham.
Since being recruited by Guy Ritchie in 1998 to lead up his debut gangster flick Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, the Stath has carved a very respectable career for himself blowing things up, shooting things with guns, and delivering one-liners in his patented mockney accent. As comedian Richard Sandling, our host for the day, correctly observed, “he is his own genre”.
The event is being organised by Lionsgate to promote the forthcoming Blitz, which will be screened alongside three other Stath classics: The Mechanic, The Expendables and audience choice Crank 2: High Voltage.

Our month-long series about working in the arts in Europe comes to an end with award-winning Polish film-maker Katarzyna Klimkiewicz
How did you get started in your job?
I knew I wanted to be a film director since I was a teenager. I never really changed my mind, although I had a few moments of despair. I was lucky to have that certainty about what I wanted to do in my life.
Is there such a thing as Polish film?
I think there is, but it has been lost for the last 20 years. The strength of Polish cinema has always been its confidence in the audience's ability to read images. Nowadays film-makers in Poland have lost this confidence, and they feel they have to explain everything in dialogue, so the films have lost their magic.
How are the arts funded in your country? Does it work?

Via Nowness comes Film 1, a short by Martin de Thurah for designer Johan Lindeberg. De Thurah is best known for his Fever Ray and James Blake music videos, and his latest stars Iva Gocheva, Bogdan Kwiatkowski and Kate Lyn Sheil. It’s shot by Kaspar Tuxen, one of Filmmaker‘s 2010 “25 New Faces.” From the site:
Today’s digital premiere of Martin de Thurah’s Film I spotlights Johan Lindeberg’s new Blk Dnm line and takes cues from the designer’s personal life. “I went through a recent break-up and wanted to use my own dynamic to inspire the film,” Lindeberg says. “I am fascinated by the way in which fashion both provokes and reflects the human narratives around it.” The Swedish fashion designer looked to De Thurah, whose surreal music videos for the likes of Fever Ray and James Blake he cites as an ongoing source of inspiration,...

With so many disappointments this summer, it's easy to forget that we'll finally get to see Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, and that we'll finally start hearing more about the final chapter as it makes its way to the big screen.
But of course, the biggest question about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows still centers on where they'll make the split between Film 1 and Film 2. Director David Yates dropped a hint to the La Times, and if you haven't read the book, here be spoilers:
"We're here in the forest, we've just finished the scene where Harry, Hermione and Ron are captured by the Snatchers after being chased through the woods. The Snatchers are brutal and scary but they aren't the most intelligent of creatures. They're trying to figure out exactly who it is they've caught ... Things can change when you edit, of course, but the...

- With the amount of positive buzz that Jacques Audiard’s “A Prophet” is receiving, Sony Pictures Classics can do no wrong in their eventual release of what should be the tent-pole art-house film of the fall/winter sched. A critic's poll at IndieWIRE (in which we participated in) confirms that Audiard's latest is a standout film the most mentions/points in all four major categories: Best Film, Director, Screenplay & Acting Performance. A Prophet beat out Lars von Trier's Antichrist and another favorite of mine, Police, Adjective and The White Ribbon for Best Film. Paradoxically, winner for Best Director at the festival (Brillante Mendoza) was the top vote getter for Worst Film. I'm glad to see that despite a mostly negative reaction from the masses that the roundup of critics found that the top three Best Directors include von Trier and his deft cinematic prose in the Dafoe/Gainsbourg

I’ve been hearing some mixed things about John Dowdle's Quarantine recently, but I can’t help but be curious how he pulls of this remake of Rec (review), one of the most-loved horror films in recent years.
Sony has plans to release Quarantine on October 17th, and over the weekend the first poster art for it showed up at Cinema Expo in Amsterdam. Film 1 got a good snap of it, which you can see on your right. Not sure how I feel about it, really; I mean there’s no way they could get away with something as simplistic as the Rec poster was, but did they have to have so much damn explanation on the poster itself?
Ah, I’m just being picky. Jennifer Carpenter screaming is what sells this poster, we all know that. Audiences want to see women in peril, right? Right!? Especially when...
