Riding in Cars with Boys: Gina Gammell, Riley Keough, Franklin Sioux Bob and Willi White on War Pony
Gaining access to an underrepresented community comes with a great amount of responsibility. There are countless examples of a director visiting a site for a few days, getting what they need, then hightailing it out only to use their subsequent press tour to emphasize the “raw grittiness” they observed while filming on location. It’s crucial to question who benefits from this exchange. Does the filmmaker gain authenticity for their work merely by virtue of who they put in front of the camera? Does the portrayed community benefit from being used to confirm an outsider’s predetermined perception? Gina Gammell and Riley […]

Lena Dunham was in a whole league of her own as an aspiring tween star.
The “Girls” creator and “A League of Their Own” enthusiast revealed that she met director Penny Marshall while auditioning for 2001 film “Riding in Cars With Boys.” Yet the audition soon went off the rails and didn’t warrant a callback.
“When I was 12, I met Penny Marshall in a failed audition for a film, ‘Riding in Cars With Boys.’ And that was really big for me,” Dunham detailed on SiriusXM’s “The Jess Cagle Show.” “I was treated actually really well. There was no cruelty. The only thing I’ll say is I understand why I didn’t get the role.”
Dunham continued, “She asked all the young actors to say our name, our height, where we were from, and smile. And I said, ‘I’m Lena, I’m from New York, and I don’t smile on command.

It’s blockbuster season and Amazon Prime is celebrating by bringing a major action film to its stream.
That’s right, Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2021 is highlighted by none other than The Tomorrow War on July 2. The year is 2051 and mankind is locked in a vicious war against an alien species. Our only hope is to go back in time and find…Chris Pratt. Ok, perhaps that’s a little reductive of the film’s plot. Future humanity also comes back to bring Sam Richardson to the future.
In terms of originals, there isn’t much else to speak of on Amazon Prime this month. The only other major release is The Pursuit of Love on July 30. This BBC series is directed by Emily Mortimer and takes place during the WWII era and follows two cousins as they navigate their lives. Lily James and Andrew Scott star.

HBO Max has ordered a two-part documentary about the late actor Brittany Murphy, best known for voicing Luanne Platter in “King of the Hill” and for starring in films like “Clueless” and “8 Mile.” The documentary hails from Blumhouse Television and Pyramid Productions and aims to present a detailed portrait of Murphy’s life, career, and unexpected death amid mysterious circumstances in 2009 when she was only 32. The series, yet to be titled, will work to debunk conspiracy theories and go beyond the tabloid headlines, with new interviews with those closest to Murphy, along with never-before-seen archival footage.
The film is directed by Emmy nominee Cynthia Hill, best known for her 2014 documentary about domestic abuse, “Private Violence,” which premiered the same year in the U.S. Documentary Competition at the Sundance Film Festival. “Men always seem to end up on top,” goes “Women Is Losers,” the Janis Joplin song that lends writer-director Lissette Feliciano’s 1960s-set feature debut its title. It’s a fitting line to ponder in the context of her over-enthusiastic yet frustratingly clumsy feminist film, which declares “inspired by real women” in its first frame before going on to illustrate their struggles against the era’s routine sexism.
It’s obvious that those unnamed and undoubtedly courageous real women mean a great deal to Feliciano, who utilizes her picture’s protagonist — a young, hardworking San Franciscan battling against the period’s patriarchal indignities — as a mouthpiece to give them a retroactive voice, and perhaps even to interrogate how far women’s rights today still have to go in a world where men continue to end up on top. But while these are commendably well-intentioned ambitions, “Women Is Losers” sadly squanders...

I’ve got a trailer for you to check out for the upcoming Netfllix movie Tall Girl. The film follows a high school girl named Jodi (Ava Michelle) who is six foot one and clearly stands out in the crowd. She is trying to get through life, all while being made fun of, always being noticed but never for the right reasons, and comparing herself to the more petite girls, like her beautiful sister.
There is one boy who has loved her since grade school (Griffin Gluck), but she just can’t get beyond the height difference. She thinks all is lost until the new, tall, exchange student shows up, and helps her to start thinking differently about herself.
Jodi, the tallest girl in her high school, has always felt uncomfortable in her own skin. But after years of slouching, being made fun of, and avoiding attention at all costs,...

Amy Lemisch is exiting her post as California Film Commissioner after 15 years on the job.
Lemisch will leave the state agency on May 10. Gov. Gavin Newsom, who took office in January after Jerry Brown was termed out, could announce her replacement soon. Newsom’s office did not respond to a request for comment.
Lemisch was appointed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2004 and re-appointed by Brown. Prior to the appointment, Lemisch worked as a producer with Penny Marshall’s Parkway Productions. Her credits include producer on “With Friends Like These”; co-producer on “Riding in Cars With Boys,” “The Preacher’s Wife” and “Renaissance Man”; and associate producer on “A League of Their Own,” “Awakenings” and “Calendar Girl.”
During the latter years of Schwarzenegger’s tenure, which ended in 2011, Lemisch was part of the campaign to boost tax credits in California to combat runaway production, resulting in an annual allocation of $100 million.

Chicago – Penny Marshall was somewhat of an enigma, and admittedly not comfortable in the spotlight. The 1970s sitcom legend who evolved into a top American film director never seemed quite sure of her legacy, but she left behind a superior body of work that defined her as a filmmaker. Ms. Marshall died from complications due to diabetes on December 17th, 2018, at the age of 75.
Carole Penny Marshall was born in the Bronx, and lived in the same building that also housed the childhood residences of Neil Simon, Paddy Chayefsky, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. She was a tap dancer as a child, and graduated from the Walton High School in New York City. After a two year stint in college, she married and had a daughter in the early 1960s, but was divorced soon thereafter. She eventually moved to Los Angeles later that decade on the encouragement of brother Garry Marshall,...

Penny Marshall, director of Big and star of Laverne and Shirley, brought the Bronx to Hollywood.
Penny Marshall, Hollywood's top-grossing female director and star of television's Laverne & Shirley died at age 75 from complications from diabetes. She had reportedly been battling health issues since diagnosed in 2009 with lung cancer which spread to her brain.
“Our family is heartbroken over the passing of Penny Marshall,” the family said in a statement. “Penny was a girl from the Bronx who came out West, put a cursive ‘L’ on her sweater and transformed herself into a Hollywood success story. We hope her life continues to inspire others.”
Marshall is best known for her role as Laverne DeFazio on the Happy Days spinoff Laverne & Shirley , which ran on ABC from 1976 to 1983. She was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy three times during the run.

Sad news has come today from Hollywood. The beloved actress and director Penny Marshall has passed away at the age of 75 in her Hollywood home due to complications from diabetes.
Penny Laverne on Laverne and Shirley. Then she gained enormous success being the first woman to direct a film that grossed more than $100 million, and the first woman to direct two films to gross as much. She was also only the second female director to see her film be Oscar-nominated for Best Picture.
She first started her directing career on episodes of Laverne and Shirley, and went on to direct some of my favorite movies, such as Big, Awakenings, A League of Their Own, and Riding in Cars With Boys. She had such a fun sense of humor, and a childlike wonder that she brought to the screen. She also produced a number of hits, including Ron Howard’s Cinderella Man.

She was a natural comedian — fearless and funny, willing to trade on her natural Bronx brogue to craft a sassy and street-wise character that was tailor-made for sitcoms. But Penny Marshall, who died Monday night at the age of 75, proved throughout her long career that she had so much more in the way of talent and ambition.
After her 1976-1983 run on ABC’s “Laverne & Shirley” made her a household name, Marshall used her skills and her connections to segue into directing. There was no roadmap in the early 1980s for a female TV star to make such a 90-degree turn, but Marshall found the path. She undoubtedly endured skepticism and snickers as she earned her DGA card, starting by directing several later episodes of “Laverne & Shirley.”

Penny Marshall, from the Bronx, had a voice you didn’t forget.
She talked in a molasses-slow, nasal whine, but her mind moved like a torpedo, finding every laugh where it was needed and the time to talk you through whatever got you down. Penny suffered from depression. She was a funny lady with no end of sorrows that she turned into comic shtick. Her death at 75, from diabetes complications, came after tough times for this actress-director-producer dynamo. “Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated! ” I am pretty sure the hopscotch chant that began every episode of ABC’s “Laverne & Shirley” (1976-83) has been echoing in the heads of nearly everyone of a certain age when they heard that Penny Marshall was dead at age 75 on Tuesday. The sitcom actress with the distinctive nasal honk who co-starred on the “Happy Days” spin-off with Cindy Williams as blue-collar Milwaukee brewery workers would become one of the most successful filmmakers of the late ’80s and the ’90s.
Much like her tomboyish character, Laverne DeFazio, who always wore a trademark “L” on her clothes, she was down to earth, naturally funny and had a knack for connecting to people. Critics might have winced at the twosome’s latter-day Lucy and Ethel antics, but these single roomies clicked with viewers in a major way, to the point that the show became the most-watched TV...

Penny Marshall, the actress and director behind “Big” and “A League of Their Own,” has died at age 75. Marshall passed away during the evening of December 17 at her California home, the New York Daily News confirms. The director’s publicist, Michelle Bega, said she passed away peacefully and died “from complications from diabetes.”
Marshall rose to prominence in Hollywood during the 1970s thanks to her leading role as Laverne DeFazio on the ABC sitcom “Laverne & Shirley.” The series was the most-watched comedy on U.S. television during its third season and ran for a total of eight seasons and 178 episodes. Marshall was nominated three times for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Musical or Comedy.
As a director, Marshall broke barriers in Hollywood with her 1988 fantasy comedy “Big,” starring Tom Hanks and Elizabeth Perkins. The movie made Marshall the first female director to earn over $100 million at the box office.

Penny Marshall, who went from starring on the smash Happy Days spinoff Laverne & Shirley to helming such features including Big and A League of Their Own, died Monday night of diabetes complications at her home in the Hollywood Hills. She was 75.
Marshall also directed films including Riding in Cars with Boys, The Preacher’s Wife, Jumpin’ Jack Flash and Renaissance Man, which she also produced along with League of Their Own. She was in postproduction on a feature about basketball Hall of Famer and Kim Jong-un pal Dennis Rodman.
Laverne & Shirley was an out-of-the-box smash after premiere in January 1976 on ABC. The characters appeared on briefly on Happy Days — which was created by her brother Garry Marshall — but made enough of an impression to lead their own series. Also starring Cindy Williams, the midcentury-set sitcom about a pair of lower-class workers at Shotz Brewery in Milwaukee would finish as the No.

Kylie Jenner once sagely informed us that 2016 would be the year of “realizing stuff.” And if there’s one thing we’ve realized beyond a shadow of a doubt over the course of the past 10 months, it’s that the fastest way to land a major ad campaign is to be the son or daughter of a famous personality. Need further evidence? Dolce & Gabbana tapped celebrity offspring for their spring/summer fashion show front row — and now they’ll be fronting the brand’s new campaign.

James Woods in 'Videodrome.' James Woods in $10 million Twitter lawsuit feud: Crassly vocal right-wing actor goes after two crassly vocal users who attacked him In a letter dated Aug. 21, '15, Twitter attorney Ryan Mrazik ridiculed Surf's Up and Scary Movie 2 actor James Woods, while also highlighting the potentially dangerous precedent of a $10 million lawsuit the 68-year-old entertainer filed against a Twitter user last July. The lawsuit was followed by a subpoena demanding that the social media giant reveal the user's identity and that of another user with whom Woods has been embroiled in the (generally) no-holds-barred Twitterverse. In case you're unfamiliar with the name, these days the two-time Oscar-nominated Woods is best known for a supporting role as a right-wing sociopath in Roland Emmerich's thriller White House Down, starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx (as a liberal-minded U.S. president despised by Woods' character), and for his relentless,...

What's leaving Netflix in March? Well, the streaming service is expiring a slew of movies and TV shows, with a big chunk of the departing titles belonging to the Cartoon Network -- you'll see those say bye-bye at the end of the month. From what we can tell, that's about it in terms of TV exiting Watch Instantly.
As for movies, the clock is ticking for favorites "Dumb and Dumber," "Fright Night," Desperado," "Seven," "Pretty in Pink," "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion," and "The Muppet Movie," which will all be pulled in the monthly purge.
Here's the complete list of titles that will vanish from your streaming list (pending any sort of meddling time-travelers). And, just so you're not left empty-handed, here's a list of what's new on Netflix in March 2015.
Leaving March 1
"3 Ninjas: Kick Back" (1994)
"Air Bud" (1997)
"Anaconda" (1997)
"Arachnophobia" (1990)
"Brokedown Palace" (1999)

Like her fellow Happy Days veteran-turned-director Ron Howard, Penny Marshall makes good but not exceptional movies. Unlike Howard, she hasn’t made very many, her last at the helm being Riding in Cars With Boys, which came out 13 years ago. In the meantime, she’s done some television, behind and in front of the camera, and a decade back she produced a few films, including Howard’s Cinderella Man. Now she’s ready to return to movie directing with the biopic Effa, about baseball Hall of Famer Effa Manley, and this is something we’re pretty excited about. For those who don’t know of Manley (and I admit I didn’t before hearing of the project), she was the first woman inducted into that honorable shrine to sports greats and she did so by being the co-owner and business manager of the Negro league team the Newark Eagles in the 1930s and 1940s. Women...

It's been 13 years since actress turned filmmaker Penny Marshall got behind the camera for Riding in Cars with Boys starring Drew Barrymore, but now she's poised to make a return to directing. Deadline reports Marshall is set to direct Effa, a biopic about Effa Manley, the first woman inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. The film will follow the woman who rose in the ranks of the Negro National League in the 1930s and ’40s as a co-owner and business manager of the Newark Eagles, a team that would go on to win the 1946 Negro World Series. Sounds like it would make a solid double feature to go with last year's 42. Here's what Marshall says about the story of Effa: “The story is a fascinating tale of a woman who broke through so many barriers and accomplished so much for the players and the game, during a time...

After more than a decade away from directing, Penny Marshall will return to helm sports-themed biopic, Effa. Per Deadline, the movie intends to tell the true story of Effa Manley, the pioneering baseball executive who was the first-ever female inducted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame.
Much like Marshall’s 1992 sports dramedy, A League Of Their Own, based around the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League from the World War II era, this movie will explore similar themes. Effa will zoom in on the specifics of Manley, an African American woman who rose through the ranks during the 1930s and 40s as the co-owner and business manager of World Series-winners, the Newark Eagles. “The story is a fascinating tale of a woman who broke through so many barriers and accomplished so much for the players and the game, during a time when the face of baseball changed forever,” said Marshall of the film.

A League Of Their Own director Penny Marshall is swinging away at a baseball biopic about Effa Manley, the sports trailblazer who became the first woman to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Manley made history by rising in the ranks of the Negro National League in the 1930s and ’40s as a co-owner and business manager of the Newark Eagles, the team that went on to win the 1946 Negro World Series. Lifetime aired its buzzed-about biopic on the late Brittany Murphy — aptly titled The Brittany Murphy Story — Saturday night. Controversy reached a fever pitch last week when Murphy’s father Angelo Bertolotti told Examiner he is “outraged” by the “hideous, unauthorized, and completely untrue” film. However, after watching the movie, he isn’t too far off-base.
The Brittany Murphy Story is bad, and that’s an understatement. The film is plagued by poor acting (yes, even for Lifetime), choppy time jumps, and tonal inconsistencies. If we’re to believe Lifetime, Murphy (played by Amanda Fuller) was a too-trusting, insecure victim to paparazzi and shady con-artists — namely, her husband Simon Monjack, who died five months after Murphy in the same room from the same cause. The film is more exploitative than exploratory. Is any of this true? We might never know, but fans certainly shouldn’t be happy about it.

The stars of Warner Bros rom-com Blended, set for release on May 23, will receive the honours at the Las Vegas convention on March 27.
“Is there anyone who isn’t in love with Drew Barrymore, one of the most captivating and incredibly talented actresses of our time?” said CinemaCon managing director Mitch Neuhauser.
“Her career is simply remarkable and to think the first two directors to take her under their wing at the respective ages of five and seven were Ken Russell and Steven Spielberg, is astonishing.”
Barrymore’s credits include the Charlie’s Angels films, Never Been Kissed, The Wedding Singer, E.T. and Riding In Cars With Boys.

Moments of sartorial significance, and that glimmer of recognition that we feel upon seeing an onscreen outfit worn more than once are found throughout Smooth Talk, Joyce Chopra’s underseen 1986 adaptation of a Joyce Carol Oates short story. The film is rife with all the monotony of life and charming ensembles we expect of a teenage girl in the summer, yet it simultaneously offers complexity and creepiness. Laura Dern plays Connie, an ingénue spending her days as an “unfinished girl, waiting for completion of some sort” (Quart 74). In her essay, “Smoothing Out the Rough Spots: The Film Adaptation of ‘Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?’” Rebecca Sumner discusses some of the costumes in Smooth Talk (as designed by Carol Oditz) in the midst of a larger argument of how well the film functions as an adaptation. Oh, Logan Lerman. You've certainly come a long way since "Riding in Cars with Boys" (yeah, see for yourself).
Director Chris Columbus certainly made a good call when it came time to cast the son of a god in "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief." There's definitely something ... well, deity-like about Logan Lerman — especially when he's wielding a sword.
Lerman is back in full-on demigod heartthrob mode in "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters." Check out our gallery of the young star in movies and on the red carpet.

The average fan of Nickelodeon’s Sam & Cat is probably too young to know who Laverne & Shirley are, but that’s about to change. The highly popular ABC sitcom of the late ’70s and early 80′s is having a little reunion thanks to the kids show.
Nickelodeon announced this week that Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams would be happy guest stars in an episode of Sam & Cat, its teen sitcom that premiered June 8, 2013 and is a crossover spin-off of both iCarly and Victorious.
In Sam & Cat, Jennette McCurdy and Ariana Grande play the titular friends who start a baby-sitting business. It also stars Cameron Ocasio and Maree Cheatham.
Though Laverne & Shirley ran for 8 seasons, until the year 1983, Marshall and Williams portrayed roommates of the ’50s and ’60s era. Their characters Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney worked in a Milwaukee brewery.
