Although eleven years have passed since the release of the third film in the Riddick franchise, star Vin Diesel has always kept hope alive that he would someday be re-teaming with franchise mastermind David Twohy on another Riddick adventure. Back in May, we learned that Riddick: Furya was scheduled to start filming on August 26th – and during the build-up to the start of production, Diesel has been sharing behind-the-scenes images and video on social media that show him getting back into character as Riddick. You can check them out at the bottom of this article.
Riddick: Furya will be a continuation of the sci-fi action franchise that began with the creature feature Pitch Black back in 2000. That was followed by the epic The Chronicles of Riddick, which underperformed at the box office in 2004, so they reduced the scope for the third film, Riddick, which was released in 2013. The Chronicles of Riddick is a very interesting sci-fi franchise if you look at it. It never became a cult classic mainstream title, but The Chronicles of Riddick franchise has a solid fanbase, and the franchise as a whole definitely helped its star Vin Diesel in his career, establishing him as a star.
The franchise was created by brothers Ken and Jim Wheat and centers on the tales of the 28th-century antihero Riddick. Since the series’ launch in 2000, three full-length movies and one animated short have been released.
We have recently confirmed that Diesel will be returning to his character in the fourth feature film, Riddick: Furya, which began filming this month. The announcement that a new Riddick movie will continue the franchise was undoubtedly a fantastic one for fans, and in light of that, we have some first-look photos from the set of the movie for you to enjoy!

Vin Diesel has worked his way up to being one of Hollywood’s A-list movie stars and has starred in some big franchises including The Fast and Furious, XXX, and The Chronicles of Riddick. He has also voiced Groot in the MCU. Outside of acting, Diesel is also a big film nerd and interestingly a big fan of Dungeons & Dragons.

Rawson Marshall Thurber's "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story" lived up to its title when it hit theaters on June 18, 2004. It had been a fairly meh summer up to this point. "Shrek 2" was a smash, and the Alfonso Cuaron-directed "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" was the first truly good and aesthetically distinctive film in that series, but most of the heavy hitters were, at best, interesting misfires. When word got out from critics that Steven Spielberg would be adding to the disappointment parade with "The Terminal," it looked like a full-on bummer summer was in the offing.
No one was expecting much from a comedy built around a popular playground pastime, but "Dodgeball" was an uproarious slapdash lark that opened to an unexpected $30 million at the domestic box office. Ben Stiller had been a proven commercial commodity since the Farrelly Brothers' surprise 1998 smash "There's Something About Mary,...

You might think that Vin Diesel would be mostly focused on finishing the Fast & Furious franchise at this point, with the reportedly last movie still sitting in the development garage. But it appears another of his recognizable characters has overtaken Dom Toretto in the race to screens – Richard B. Riddick. Riddick: Furya is now in line to shoot in August.
The Riddick character originated in 2000's Pitch Black, which saw him and a group of survivors of a crashed spaceship tackling bloodthirsty critters that hunt by night — as the planet they're stranded on is thrust into a long night by an eclipse. He was further explored by 2004's The Chronicles Of Riddick and 2013's Riddick.
Writer/director David Twohy, who has been on the Riddick journey alongside Diesel since the first movie, is back for Furya, which sees the character finally return to his home world, a place he barely remembers at this point.

While Vin Diesel is known as the protagonist of the Fast & Furious franchise, he had his breakthrough with the sci-fi film franchise The Chronicles of Riddick. Beginning with Pitch Black, the franchise spawned two more sequels, short films, and video games. Diesel even turned producer of the threequel after trading the rights for the franchise for a cameo in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.
The makers have now confirmed that a fourth film is in development. Diesel would be reprising his role as the mercenary Riddick in the film titled Riddick: Furya. The film would reportedly follow the character as he goes back to his homeworld, which finds its citizens fighting against a new monster.

Vin Diesel will be back for Riddick: Furya, ahead of filming Fast & Furious 11: more on the story right here.
Outside of the original Pitch Black movie, that introduced Vin Diesel as the character of Riddick on the big screen, there’s an argument that the terrific videogame The Chronicles Of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay is as good as the franchise has got on screen.
Certainly 2004’s mega-budget The Chronicles Of Riddick stumbled a little, and then a third movie, 2013’s Riddick, financially was more rewarding but still not top tier.
Nonetheless, Vin Diesel is not discouraged, and he’s reuniting with director David Twohy for a long-mooted fourth cinematic adventure for the character of Riddick. The film in question will be called Riddick: Furya, and the assumption was that it was going to slot in around production for the upcoming Fast & Furious 11.

Vin Diesel will begin production on the fourth installment of the Riddick franchise, Riddick: Furya, on August 26. The film will be shot in Germany, Spain, and the UK.
This follow-up to the sci-fi films Pitch Black (2000), The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), and Riddick (2013) reunites Diesel with writer and director David Twohy. Diesel will reprise his role as the anti-hero Richard B. Riddick, a dangerous escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the galaxy.
In Riddick: Furya, Riddick finally returns to his homeworld, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there, he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster. Some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.

After years of promises that it would happen, the fourth "Riddick" movie is, indeed, finally happening. Vin Diesel is set to return as the titular character in a new installment of the franchise titled "Riddick: Furya," with David Twohy again serving as director. For the fourth time since the turn of the millennium, Diesel will be playing in the sandbox that helped make him a movie star in the first place.
According to a press release, "Furya" will begin production on August 26, 2024, with filming set to take place in Germany, Spain, and the U.K. This brings the project full circle, as Diesel and Twohy have been trying to make it for some time. Whenever Vin Diesel wants to get away from family and live more than a quarter mile at a time, he revisits his other franchises. Diesel, an unapologetic sci-fi nerd, has always had a soft spot for his space anti-hero character, Riddick. Diesel will be following up on the previous entries with the upcoming Riddick: Furya. Deadline has now reported that this entry has just set its production start date on August 26th. This comes just as director Louis Leterrer confirmed that the eleventh Fast & Furious movie will not begin production until next year, which leaves Diesel open.
The plot of Riddick: Furya reads,
“Riddick finally returns to his home world, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.

Vin Diesel is officially returning to the world of Pitch Black and galactic antihero Riddick, the sci-fi action franchise that gave the actor his first major leading role.
Riddick: Furya, which was announced in February 2023, is now moving full steam ahead toward an Aug. 26 shoot date, producers announced Monday. Diesel stars and produces the film, which reteams him with David Twohy, the filmmaker who has directed all of the franchise’s previous entries. Furya will film in locales such as Germany, Spain and the U.K.
Pitch Black, released by Universal in 2000, introduced Diesel as a captured criminal who, along with several other passengers, crash lands on a planet where sundown unleashes feral monsters. While the first one was made for $23 million, 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick cost over $100 million, as the movie went big in scope. The route failed to excite audiences and it seemed like the movie series was over.

Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2024 is missing a certain amount of original series firepower. In the place of a blockbuster like The Handmaid’s Tale or Shōgun, however, is some content diversity.

This mystery drama takes place during the reign of Henry VIII and features none other than Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) investigating a murder. Other series of note this month include the Korean drama Uncle Samsik on May 15.

What’s the best destination for spring TV? IndieWire doesn’t have a definitive answer, but as we do every month we’ll help you weigh the options with a breakdown of everything coming to your favorite streaming platforms in May.
The month is a prime time to have Disney+, what with the ongoing and buzzy success of “X-Men 97” and upcoming “Marvel Studios’ Assembled” going behind the scenes of the reboot series. May is of course the month of Star Wars, and the House of Mouse will celebrate with “Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” on May 4. Disney is also home to BBC America’s “Doctor Who,” which returns for a highly-anticipated 14th season with Ncuti Gatwa stepping into the Tardis as the new Doctor (he stepped into the role in December 2023 as part of the series’ beloved Christmas special tradition).

Prime Video’s big February drop is Mr. & Mrs. Smith! No, not the 2005 Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie action movie, but a new TV series kinda based on it starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. The set up for the show version? Glover and Erskine are two strangers who both get jobs at a shady spy agency and are asked to get married so that they can pretend to be a couple undercover, but things get more complicated when they start falling in love for real. Uh oh!
If you’re in the mood for a movie or two this month, you can also check out the Prime debuts of Strays, Bottoms, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. In the meantime, here’s everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Freevee this month. Amazon Originals are accompanied by an asterisk!

Vin Diesel's Riddick movies are an unusual franchise, driven by Diesel's love for the character and a desire to explore his world with series director David Twohy. Each entry is wildly different from the others, spanning different genres and even mediums, with a short detour into animation for "Riddick: Dark Fury." Riddick himself is a fun sci-fi creation, the last surviving member of an alien warrior race called Furyans, with reflective eyes that see in the dark. But where should newcomers to the franchise start, and what order should they watch the "Riddick" flicks in?
Thankfully the answer is fairly simple, dear reader, though which entries work best might vary from viewer to viewer. "Pitch Black" seems to be fairly universally beloved, but the other "Riddick" entries received more mixed receptions yet have their own cult followings. The movies are possible to enjoy on their own but might be a little confusing,...

The 2000s was a strange time for genre filmmaking and especially science fiction. While sci-fi cinema was in theory thriving, that was mainly thanks to the presence of franchises that were, in fact, their own mini-genres (like Star Wars and Star Trek). Then there were superhero films, always sort of a cousin to sci-fi, with the X-Men and Spider-Man series both exploding and the Marvel Cinematic Universe making its debut with Iron Man (2008) just as the decade came to a close.
But there were some top-shelf literary adaptations as well. Steven Spielberg’s A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001) was a flawed yet powerful expansion of a Brian Aldiss story while his War of the Worlds (2005) and Minority Report (2002) were outstanding takes on classic tales from H.G. Wells and Philip K. Dick (there might have been no sci-fi filmmaker more consistent at the time than The Beard). Other remakes or adaptations,...

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
It's safe to say that Vin Diesel is an actor who has made the most out of every single opportunity given to him. From voicing Groot in Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise -- a role that requires him to say just three words over and over again most of the time (and in multiple languages) -- to leading the "Fast & Furious" series as Dom Toretto, Diesel has generated more than $14 billion at the box office through the movies he's starred in. Yet, it is a modest, mid-budget hit from a decade ago that remains arguably the most fascinating thing he's ever done. With 2013's "Riddick," Diesel used every tool at his disposal to bring a passion project to fruition.

Mr. Vin Diesel has made a name for himself playing monotone bruisers; big guys who look like they want to smash your skull in if you get in your way. But he's also a family man when it comes to the "Fast and Furious" films. He's also been a talking tree, a sci-fi warrior, a mobster, a military grunt in a Steven Spielberg movie, and more. While Diesel seems solely committed to playing Dom in the "Furious" saga these days, we shouldn't forget about his other work, some of which is quite good (and others ... not).
To get to the bottom of what Diesel's best role is, we here at /Film asked our readers to weigh in. Then we compiled the results in a special, massive supercomputer. The results may actually surprise you. They kind of surprised me! So let's take a look at Vin Diesel's best roles, starting at the bottom.

When the San Diego Comic-Con moderator of the “Project K” Hall H panel said this was the first Indian film to ever come to through the convention, it almost seemed impossible. But some haphazard googling confirmed it’s true, not counting bootlegs from back in the day when those vendors were still allowed here.
So it makes sense that the massive show the producers of the science fiction action film — they call the genre “Spice Punk” — put on in Hall H was as much hype for this particular movie as it was for India’s film industry itself. The panel opened with a performance by an all-male drum line joined midway by an all-female dance troupe clad in white and carrying electric torches.
This was followed, after some banter between the moderator and producer Rana Daggubati, a panel guest who practically served as co-moderator, by a sizzle reel devoted to...

If you are artistically inclined, here’s a challenge for you. Design the dining area of a spaceship for a working class, blue-collar crew but, and here’s the catch, it can look nothing like the dining area of the commercial towing vehicle Uscss Nostromo. Let us know how many drafts you get through.
It is a look that is so ubiquitous in spaceship design that we barely even register it anymore, and yet it is also completely distinctive. Whereas before Ridley Scott‘s Alien we had seen spaceships as naval ships, wagon trains, and disheveled Vw camper vans, with the Nostromo we were introduced to the spaceship as a long-distance truck, as an ocean tanker, and as an oil rig. And like the titular alien star-beast, once it got through the airlock there was no getting rid of it. Here are some of the best stories to be inspired by,...

When "Alien 3" was released in 1992, it was roundly bashed by critics, met with uproar by fans, and later disowned by its director, David Fincher. Despite this, the troubled production and intrigue around Fincher's original vision have made it a constant source of fascination for "Alien" aficionados. One of the many subplots was the input of David Twohy, one of several writers involved in the film and whose biggest contribution was the setting of a prison planet populated by shaven-headed criminals.
Things didn't work out for Twohy on "Alien 3," but he got a chance to revisit that idea when he was offered the chance to rework and direct a screenplay that bore similarities to the "Alien" movies. Its most interesting character would become a vicious criminal named Richard B. “The Whale” repeated as #1 on two of three VOD charts this week, with Brendan Fraser’s Best Actor Oscar propelling significant new interest for Darren Aronofsky’s film. It leads at iTunes and Google Play, while its lower price placed it behind two $19.99 titles at the revenue-calculating Vudu.
However, the biggest impact on the VOD charts this week may come from the theatrical debut of “John Wick: Chapter 4.” Prior titles in the Lionsgate action franchise occupied six of the 20 slots at iTunes and Google Play. That’s less likely at the revenue-driven Vudu chart, where the three previous titles are available for $3.99.
But even “Wick 4” saw interest — that despite it lacking any immediate availability other than at theaters. Most platforms announced presales on Friday for Est (buying a digital download), even though that option is weeks or months away. It currently is #4, but briefly hit #1 over the weekend.

Last month, it was announced that Vin Diesel and writer/director David Twohy are about ready to get rolling on Riddick: Furya, the fourth film in the Riddick franchise and a project that Diesel has been regularly mentioning pretty much ever since the third movie was released ten years ago, doing his best to keep the Riddick hype alive. His efforts must be working, because shortly after last month’s announcement all three of the previous Riddick movies cracked the Netflix top 10 in the United States. Pop Culture reported that, at one point, the Riddick movies were ranking in the top 10 in reverse order: “Riddick stands at number four, Chronicles of Riddick at number seven and Pitch Black at number nine.” So Diesel took to Instagram to celebrate the Netflix success of the films while mentioning that he’s working to get Riddick 4 into production.

This week in home viewing, the whale topped a bear. “Cocaine Bear” ($19.99) came out on PVOD after its third weekend — standard timing for Universal. Since it was still strong in theaters, home availability would usually guarantee across-the-board #1 rankings at iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu.
But surprise — A24 lowered the price of “The Whale” to $4.99 just before Brendan Fraser’s Best Actor win. The film soared to the top at iTunes and Google Play right after the Oscars.
Both sites rank by transaction, which benefits any lower-cost rental. However, Darren Aronofsky’s film is also #2 at Vudu, which counts by revenue. (Vudu has “Cocaine Bear” at #1).
Meantime, Oscar juggernaut “Everything Everywhere All at Once” — available on streaming as well as theaters — stayed strong at $19.99. That price may have discouraged some buyers, but it still placed fourth or fifth on all charts.
“A Man Called Otto” (Sony), with its price reduced to $5.99, continued its strong chart showing.

Vin Diesel has celebrated a milestone on Netflix for his Riddick trilogy.
The Fast and Furious star has appeared as violent antihero Richard B Riddick in three films across the Chronicles of Riddick franchise: Pitch Black (2000), The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), and Riddick (2013).
He is seemingly set to reprise the role once more in Riddick 4: Furya, a film that has been in development since 2014.
On Instagram, Diesel offered fans an update on the prospective new sequel, and cheered the fact that all three Riddick films were in Netflix’s Top 10 films list at the same time.
“Had some really great Riddick meetings this week...” wrote the actor, “only to find that all three films are in the top ten Netflix movies.
“Wow. So grateful to our Furyan community. Haha. Happy creative Sunday…”
In the comments underneath, fans of the franchise shared their enthusiasm for a fourth Riddick entry.

In the 2000 film "Pitch Black," star Vin Diesel plays a convict being transported to a prison on a spaceship when it's damaged and lands on a desert planet. Though it looks deserted and continually bathed in light, there are dangerous creatures there that come out only in the dark. That would be fine ... if an eclipse wasn't happening. The crew and passengers, including an Imam and his followers, a person looking for a new home, a bounty hunter, and an antique dealer, now have to fight off these creatures, and not everyone survives.
The film was a sleeper hit, making $53 million worldwide on a $23 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. The film spawned two sequels, "The Chronicles of Riddick" in 2004 and "Riddick" in 2013. Both films also starred Diesel, with David Twohy directing all three. According to a 2002 story from Variety, Twohy wasn't originally going to direct the sequels, but...

Officially announced just a couple weeks back, Vin Diesel will return in Riddick: Furya, the upcoming fourth installment in the Riddick franchise that’s being directed by David Twohy.
In the new film, Riddick finally returns to his home world, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins by the Necromongers.
But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new enemy. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.
David Twohy‘s 2000 film Pitch Black was our introduction to Vin Diesel as an action star, and the actor of course went on reprise the role of monster-killer Richard B. Riddick in 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick and most recently, 2013’s Riddick. All three films are coming to Netflix in March 2023, we’ve learned this week, just in time for the fourth movie’s announcement.

March is a time for madness, whether it comes from basketball, Mercury retrograde, or a person’s home streaming habits. Netflix joins in on the chaos by updating its library with all three “Hangover” movies, a whole lot of workout content, “Magic Mike Xxl,” and much, much more.
On March 9, the streamer will premiere Part 2 of “You” Season 2, starring Penn Badgley, Charlotte Ritchie, and Ed Speleers. The five remaining episodes find Joe (Badgley) trapped in a volatile dance with London mayoral candidate and serial killer Rhys (Speleers), trying to prevent more murders but also not go down for the many he’s committed in the process. The trailer shows Joe and Kate (Ritchie) growing closer, more brushes with Kate’s wealthy socialite friends, and the return of Victoria Pedretti as Joe’s wife Love — or maybe the ghost of his wife, and of sins past.
