The film was inspired by Liar Liar (1997) starring Jim Carrey, while the poster was copied from Me, Myself & Irene (2000), another Jim Carrey comedy.
Govinda and Sushmita Sen were previously cast together in David Dhawan's 1999 film "Biwi No. 1". Govinda walked out of the film due to a disagreement with Sushmita and was replaced by Salman Khan. Dhawan got them to resolve their differences and they worked together in this film for the first time.
Ekta Kapoor made her debut as a producer.
The film was originally titled "Sajan Re Jhoot Mat Bolo".
