An intriguing film set in in the early 1920s. It explores the trials and tribulations of two families who live in Prague and Budapest, after the first world war.

The son of a once grand Hungarian family meets the daughter of a Czech family and their passionate relationship sours as they deal with the hardships of the time, and the tensions and resentments between the various ethnic groups- Czechs, Slovaks; Hungarians.

Very convincing performances, more like a documentary at times.

After enduring considerable disappointment and sadness in her new life, the Czech girl finds some peace and hope for the future with her father-in-law. Their friendship/relationship is never fully explained but is developed in a very tender and sympathetic manner by the director - Miloslav Luther. The sub-titles are a bit dodgy at times but overall a very rewarding experience, you really want to know what happens to these people.
