'Trials' wins Gemini verdict
TORONTO -- A TV movie about a rape victim was the big winner Monday night in Toronto at the Gemini Awards, Canada's TV awards. For The Many Trials of Jane Doe, a biopic about police mishandling of a rape case, Jerry Ciccoritti earned a Gemini for best direction, Wendy Crewson grabbed a trophy for best actress in a TV movie, and Karen Walton won for best TV movie writing. With fewer original one-hour Canadian dramas on primetime schedules because of funding shortages, TV movies were the big winners at the Geminis. The best TV movie award went to 100 Days in the Jungle, and Michael Riley earned the Gemini for best performance by an actor in a dramatic program or miniseries for his role in The Interrogation of Michael Crowe. CTV newsroom drama The Eleventh Hour came away with the Gemini for best TV drama, unseating Canadian Broadcasting Corp.'s DaVinci's Inquest, which had won in the category the previous five years.
