An Ukrainian woman enters Belgium illegally and hides in the van of a driver abandoned by his wife. He ends up helping her to find her husband who had emigrated long before. They are joined by his wacky Spanish mother and cute young daughter.

A group of undocumented aliens are being transferred to Brussels airport in a van where they were to be deported on flights out of the country. The vehicle suffers an accident and the occupants see a way for liberation. No one is happier than Sonia, an Ukranian woman who was coming to Belgium to be with her husband, but got caught by immigration. The police arrives to search for the missing deportees, catching a few, but Sonia manages to escape. Miguel, a Spaniard whose family emigrated to Belgium, is a single father who has not amounted to much. His house is a mess. He owes rent money to his landlord and he cannot pay. He works for Juan, his more prosperous brother, the owner of a travel agency that specializes in trips to warm places. Having to go to the airport, Miguel finds himself in a traffic tie-up. He decides to get off the road, driving over a recently planted corn field. He is not prepares to find Sonia hiding in his vehicle. Thus this frantic comedy begins. A surprise Belgian entry, it is a sort of madcap comedy with shades of a roadie. Directed with style by Stephan Vuillet, the film showed recently on a French international cable channel. For its sake, the frantic pace of the film works wonders as it goes from one situation to the next at breathless pace. It examines the lives of immigrants to countries where work was plentiful with good standard of living. &quot;25 Degrees in Winter&quot; was shot in 2004, therefore, it does not reflect the downturn in the economic picture of Belgium, or Europe for that matter. The screenplay is a collaboration by M. Vuillet, Pedro Romero and Stephane Malandron. The film is worth a look to watch Jacques Gamblin in action as Miguel. He gives an inspired performance that never stops. He is equally matched by Carmen Moura, playing his mother. Ms. Moura is a pleasure to watch because her performance never goes overboard. Sweet Raphaelle Molinier is seen as Laura, Miguel&#39;s daughter. Sonia is played by Lithuanian actress Ingerborga Dapkunaite.

When the film begins you see that one of the important themes (a universal one) is the illegal immigration. An Ukrainian girl knows a Spanish family in Belgium. But then you get to know this persons and it becomes so easy to like them. They are just regular persons with dreams and hopes, getting tangled in a tiny car in a hot day (in the middle of winter) across Brussels. Have you ever seen a road movie in the middle of a city? Well, this is your chance. You may know where the whole plot is going, but the question is how. Performances are so enjoyable. But two of them are outstanding: Raphaelle Molinier is a cute little girl that acts as a child, not as the little adult or the annoying scamp character that we often see in many movies. When she speaks she REALLY thinks the world would change with her good will. And special kudos for Carmen Maura in her role as Abuelita (Grandma). She&#39;s grumpy, manipulating, &quot;mischievous&quot; but you just gotta love her. This is not only a superb performance but an unforgettable one. When you have a good story with good characters, and good performances, the result is this. At the end, we all are foreigners in this world, but together we make our home...

A Spanish and her descendants who are Belgian after the dictatorship of the Franco Generalissimo (the Generalissimo of the s...) threw them outside Spain, like so many others that they had to emigrate by political or economic reasons: the old Europe. The new designs of familiar relation: a father left with its daughter, a mother with its son living with a stranger... And sure also the victims, always innocent, who must adapt to the new forms. Without excluding solidarity and the love, as she could not be of another way. One persecuted Ukrainian one, without documents, hundreds of Arabs who teem by the streets of Brussels: the new Europe, possibly future racially mixed Europe flood of rich shades.That is an alive society and in growth and for that reason generating adaptation problems. In spite of the apparent chaos which is it is Life. Live, then, the diversity.

This film is about a Ukrainian woman going to Belgium illegally to reunite with her husband. I particularly like the performance of the mother, who has to poke her nose into everything. She is so natural and human. Miguel is also a likable character, amplified by his mishaps and by his carefree attitude to almost everything. His kindness is also deeply touching, but probably not as realistic in modern day life. The ending is rather brutal. Sometimes the truth is not the way we want it to be. The little girl, Laura&#39;s state of mind is also portrayed well, and her turmoil of seeing a parallel story of her own is striking. I find this film warm and brutal at the same time.

Well, I just saw this movie yesterday and it almost gave me a headache, I&#39;ve seen french movies before and I think the French are sometimes very funny, like for example &quot;Amelie&quot;, but this was a drama, a chaotic mess. It was just very busy, all these weird things that occur in the movie. The whole time you are thinking &quot;where is this movie going to?&quot; It was a big mystery, but with a happy ending. The Ukranian girl is the most mysterious person in the movie, the only reason I wanted to keep watching was because of curiosity what would happen to her. My favorite character was at first Laura, because she was so cute, but later on in the movie she turns out to be quite annoying. Anyway, I&#39;ve seen better.
