Brad Dourif has had an incredible acting career that stretches back more than fifty years – and back in the early days of that career, he even earned a “Best Actor in a Supporting Role” Oscar nomination for his performance in the 1975 classic One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Over a decade later, he started playing the role he is best known for, that of Charles Lee Ray, a.k.a. Chucky, a serial killer who uses voodoo to transfer his soul into the body of a doll. Dourif is now 74 years old, so when we hear that he has decided to retire from acting, it’s totally understandable… but while talking about his retirement, Dourif has also made sure to assure fans that his days of Chucky are not over. He will still continue to work on any Chucky projects that might come up.

The Halloween franchise is a multiverse of madness. The third film, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, has always stood off to the side by itself. The seventh, Halloween H20, came along and ignored the events of all of the previous sequels except Halloween II. The follow-up to that film, Halloween: Resurrection, was so poorly received that the entire original timeline was abandoned so Rob Zombie would direct a Halloween remake. And after the sequel to the remake, we got a trilogy of sequels to the original film. But before the decision was made to move forward with a remake, a sequel to Halloween: Resurrection was in development – and one idea for a sequel would have featured the return of Josh Harnett’s character John Tate from H20, Busta Rhymes’ character Freddie Harris from Resurrection, and Charles Cyphers’ Leigh Brackett from the first two movies. This one would have been titled Halloween: Retribution…...

A major dilemma has surfaced in the wake of the classic slasher resurgence: that of confusing movie titles. The new "Scream" is titled the same as the original, and so is David Gordon Green's "Halloween." The latest offender is David Blue Garcia's "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," named exhaustingly close to Tobe Hooper's original 1974 franchise-launcher "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre." For all three slasher franchises, this has not only resulted in turning Google into a gaping hellmouth where research goes to die, but now all posts about any film in the...

The horror-comedy “Deadstream” feels like ’80s Sam Raimi traveled forward in time, became obsessed with streaming culture, and turned Ash Williams into the dumbest possible stunt streamer. And it rules. With stunning creature effects, a great balance between laughs and scares, and one of the best uses of the Screenlife format, this is a film that could easily become a Halloween tradition alongside “Evil Dead II” or “Hell House LLC.”
Joseph Winter pulls what is mostly a one-man show as Shawn Ruddy, a popular yet toxic YouTube vlogger who was canceled after one of his stunts went too far and left someone in the hospital. After switching platforms to Twitch knockoff Livvid, Shawn decides to reclaim his influencer status and monetize his fans by conquering his biggest fear and surviving an entire night at a haunted house. Get ready, horror fans! "Halloween Ends" has, well, ended! The final film in David Gordon Green's reboot trilogy is set to stab its way into theaters this fall, marking the latest "final" confrontation between Jamie Lee Curtis' Lurie Strode and local old William Shatner cosplayer, Michael Myers.
Starting with 2018's boringly titled "Halloween," Green's new trilogy has brought Michael Myers to a new generation with a decades-old conflict. That film, set decades after the events of John Carpenter's original 1978 classic, also titled "Halloween," finds Laurie Strode as a grizzled survivor. She spent her life preparing for the inevitable day Michael Myers would escape and turned...

In the grand old splattered hallways of slasher horror movies, few franchises are as up and down and all around as that of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Since Tobe Hooper terrified us back in 1974 with, what is still, one of the greatest and most terrifying, raw and sadistic horror films ever made, there have been numerous attempts to match this landmark original.
Some have drawn cult fandom, some continue to fiercely divide (Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation), some are just plain terrible (2017’s Leatherface) or meh (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3: Leatherface) and some are rather underrated if very flawed attempts at taking the lore elsewhere while remaining somewhat true (Texas Chainsaw 3D). But now, ol’ Leatherface faces his next challenge, and most frightening…social media!

Rob Zombie’s upcoming “The Munsters” reboot is rated PG, the filmmaker announced on Instagram this week. The rating makes sense given that “The Munsters” is based on the family-oriented sitcom that gained popularity in the 1960s, but many fans speculated what kind of “Munsters” film the reboot would be given the involvement of Zombie. The director behind violent and twisted horror films such as “House of 1000 Corpses” and “3 from Hell” doesn’t exactly scream family friendly.
“For those of you speculating, wondering and assuming that ‘The Munsters’ would be dirty, violent and nasty…well, you are wrong,” Zombie wrote on Instagram while announcing his reboot’s PG rating. “It’s all good down on Mockingbird Lane.”
Zombie announced last summer that he would be writing and helming a reimagining of “The Munsters” and constructing all of Mockingbird Lane, the street where the family of benign monsters live...

Paramount Home Entertainment just released Escape from L.A. (1996) on 4K Ultra HD and its darkness has never been clearer. In it, former marine commando and all-around badass, Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell), is captured by the New Moral America and dropped into the country’s immoral detention center to steal a doomsday device designed to douse all power on the planet. The film marked John Carpenter’s first sequel, following up on the iconic dystopian satire, Escape from New York (1981), with even more nihilistic bite, and an ending darker than a fade to black.
Directed from a screenplay Carpenter co-wrote with Debra Hill and Russell, Escape from L.A. concludes with Snake Plissken pressing the button on the biggest remote control ever made. Every screen, all communications, and total power is cut. It is one of the biggest cliffhangers because, after an apparent off-screen debacle in Cleveland and two urban prison breaks,...

Jamie Lee Curtis recently told People magazine that she felt “embarrassed” going nude for “Trading Places” when she was 21 years old. Curtis starred as a call girl in the John Landis-directed 1983 comedy opposite Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy. Curtis appears topless in the film.
“I was 21 years old and the part required Ophelia to take off her dress,” Curtis said. “Did I like doing it? No. Did I feel embarrassed that I was doing it? Yes. Did I look Ok? Yeah. Did I know what I was doing? Yeah. Did I like it? No. Was I doing it because it was the job? Yes.”
Curtis added, “I wouldn’t do it today, it’s the last thing in the world I would do now. I also am married for 37 years, I wasn’t married then. I’m a mother of children. Absolutely not.”

Note: This article includes spoilers for "The Batman."
"The Batman" tells us it's a horror movie from its very first frame. The first shot shows a surveillance view of a happy family, their kid dressed for trick-or-treating. Within minutes, the family's seemingly friendly patriarch, who's also Gotham's mayor, will be dead. The predator's eye-view and the costumed, pumpkin-basket-holding kid at the scene's center are familiar. This feels like a sly play on John Carpenter's "Halloween," and a clue to the Riddler's (Paul Dano) own broken connection to childhood innocence. It may be the first subtle horror reference in "The Batman," but it's by no means the...

Exclusive: Production on Netflix’s Nailed It! Halloween was permanently suspended a day after crew members went on strike to secure a contract with IATSE. The walkout happened midway through filming the eight-episode Halloween arc of Nailed It!‘s seventh season.
The union had been picketing the show’s producers, Magical Elves, in the hope of bringing the company to the bargaining table. Instead, Magical Elves opted to stop production after four episodes. Following some back-and-forth between the indie production company and Netflix, the two sides agreed not to proceed with the additional four episodes. The crew was informed by Magical Elves that production had wrapped and its members were called in to collect their gear Tuesday afternoon.
“I know for sure that it’s shut down,” a union source told Deadline about Nailed It! Halloween! “They’d rather shut down than sign a union contract. They’re notoriously nonunion.

Director Matt Reeves reboots DC’s signature superhero franchise with this new start-from-scratch Batman adventure, starring Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader. Conceived as the first instalment of a new trilogy, it’s a comics-savvy Bat-thriller that gets almost everything right.
Taking inspiration from classic Batman story The Long Halloween, The Batman begins two years into billionaire Bruce Wayne’s (Pattinson) “Gotham Project”, whereby he patrols the streets of Gotham City at night, dishing out vigilante justice while dressed as a bat. In doing so, he’s earned the trust of Police Lieutenant James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright), who fires up the Bat-signal whenever there’s a crime requiring The Batman’s attention.

Prior to the past several years, slasher movies were all but dead. Unlike the unstoppable killers at its core, always rising for one last scare, the subgenre seemed to be down for good. Largely introduced in Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" and Michael Powell's "Peeping Tom" in the early 1960s, slasher movies came into their own in the following decade. Classics of the "Halloween" and "Black Christmas" sort were released, solidifying the subgenre as both a critical and artistic force the be reckoned with. The 1980s, however, were a true golden age for slashers with countless imitators cropping up, both independently and from the big studios. There were different...

Marvel and Disney’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is expected to soar to the top of the domestic box office over the holiday weekend with an estimated four-day debut of $75 million to $85 million.
The superhero film took in $29.6 million on Friday from 4,300 theaters. Some industry experts are estimating the superhero film’s earnings could even reach $86 million over its first four days, with a predicted three-day gross of $70.8 million. This would put “Shang-Chi” slightly below the debut of “Black Widow,” which opened to $80 million over three days and $60 million on Disney Plus Premier Access. However, “Shang-Chi” is expected to break the record for all-time Labor Day weekend earnings, far surpassing those of 2007’s “Halloween,” which made $30.6 million over the 2007 holiday weekend.
Unlike “Black Widow,” “Shang-Chi” is premiering exclusively in theaters as opposed to the hybrid release model that has become the norm during the Covid-19 pandemic.

[Editor’s Note: Spoilers for “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” Season 5, Episode 10, “Game Night” follow.]
The Fox comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” for reasons made obvious by its title, chose to celebrate its 99th episode last week, putting the spotlight on each character during a crazy road trip from Los Angeles to New York. But it also included a big reveal that became a central part of the show’s 100th episode, “Game Night” — Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz), the show’s resident badass, coming out as bisexual.
Rosa’s coming-out, showrunner Dan Goor told IndieWire, was a story choice made in close discussion with Beatriz this season. “In a way, after Stephanie came out, and has really in so many ways become such an Lgbt advocate, we felt like it was really a meaningful opportunity for the character, and it definitely felt in-world for the character. It didn’t feel like, you know, we didn’t feel like people would be like, ‘What?!’ You know, and 100 episodes in it feels like a good,...

You may know her as Jamie Lloyd or Annie Brackett from the Halloween franchise, but right now actress and filmmaker Danielle Harris is providing viewers with another enthralling performance with her role as Amy Barrett in Christopher Lawrence Chapman's new film, Inoperable. A mind-bending experience that blends psychological Twilight Zone-esque scares with gory hospital horror, Inoperable is out now in select theaters from Zorya Films and Millman Productions, and Daily Dead recently had the great pleasure of speaking with Harris about her unique new role and the ambitious approach to filming Inoperable, and she also shared her hopes for the future of the Halloween franchise.
Hi Danielle, and congratulations on Inoperable. It feels like a mix of Groundhog Day and The Twilight Zone, but it still has its own personality. Watching it for the first time was such a mind-bending experience, so what was it like when you...

Danielle Harris is an actress, based in Los Angeles. She has appeared in dozens and dozens of films. Notably, she appeared in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, at the very young age of 11 and Halloween 5, just a year later. She has also appeared in the the two Halloween remakes, shot by Rob Zombie. This film fan and critic knows her from her work on Stakeland (2010), Hatchet II (2010), Hatchet III (2013), See No Evil 2 (2014), Havenhurst (2016) and now in Christopher Lawrence Chapman's Inoperable. Harris is a prolific and talented actress. And, she is interesting, in that she has chosen to specifically work in the horror genre. In this interview, Harris talks about some of the difficulties of shooting in the genre. She also talks about doing her own stunt work, on Hatchet III and what she liked about her latest production, Inoperable. Her spirit animal is a wolf.

For much of the 2017 Gotham Independent Spirit Awards ceremony, it seemed like nothing could topple “Get Out.” Then came “Call Me By Your Name,” which landed Best Feature after “Get Out” triumphed in three major categories, proving that not only are both movies serious contenders for the best movies of the year, but we also have an unpredictable awards race.
That said: Anyone who uses the Gothams as a crystal ball for predicting the Oscar race is looking in the wrong place. Hosted by Ifp, the swanky New York shindig celebrates movies and television made with an “economy of means,” with a series of small committees to select the nominees and winners for each category. That’s a world away from the Oscar voting process, which involves thousands of members, multiple branches, and no limits on budgets.

Next to Universal, few studios have had such a big impact on horror than Rko Radio Pictures. Started in 1927, Rko was the first studio founded to make exclusively sound films, a then-brand-new invention that served as a major draw for the studio. Rko’s life was relatively short (it was killed just 30 years after forming), but during their time, they put out a seriously impressive number of classics, including Top Hat, It’s a Wonderful Life, The Informer, and most notably, Citizen Kane.
Of course, Rko didn’t shy away from horror. While their output wasn’t nearly as prolific as, say, Universal’s, it was still quite impressive, boasting some of the most formative and important horror films of old Hollywood. Rko saw the release of a few all-time classics, including I Walked With a Zombie, The Thing From Another World, King Kong, and the topic of today’s Crypt,...

Filmmaker and actor Mark Duplass won’t be seeing “Daddy’s Home 2” this weekend, and in a new tweet, he’s made his disdain clear to his 400,000 Twitter followers. Instead, Duplass would rather see one of many other great movies also on the big screen this weekend, and perhaps his followers will be encouraged to follow suit.
I like many of the people involved so I hate to do this but I must say Nope No Way to “Daddy’s Home 2” bc it stars Mel Gibson and it’s 2017 and there are plenty of great movies to see this weekend in theaters.

Keith Urban is in the running for four trophies, including entertainer of the year, at the 51st annual Country Music Association Awards tonight (Nov. 8), but -- win or lose -- his most important contribution to the event might well be the song he plans to debut.
Capitol Nashville released a new single, “Female,” to radio stations at 6 a.m. Et, hours before the performance on ABC. Roughly three weeks old, the song was inspired in part by the Harvey Weinstein scandal in Hollywood’s film industry. Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What’s the best modern show set in the ’80s? (To qualify, the show must have aired sometime 2000-present.)
Alan Sepinwall (@sepinwall), Uproxx
Recency bias would suggest “Halt and Catch Fire,” even though its strongest season, this last one, took place in the 1990s, or “Stranger Things,” which is an extremely fun show but not an all-timer. That leaves two clear-cut favorites: “Freaks and Geeks,” Paul Feig and Judd Apatow’s ode to high school outcasts; and FX’s Cold War spy thriller “The Americans.” The former is one of the great one-season wonders, one of the best shows ever made about teenagers, and — between Feig,...

Living in Chicago, I spend much of my year being jealous of all the people I see online going to the various genre film festivals held around the parts of the country that aren’t here… until now.
For the first time ever, Chicago is getting its very own full-blown genre festival with Cinepocalypse, a week-long event running November 2nd–9th at the Music Box Theatre, the best place to see a movie in the entire city. Formerly the Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival (which I have attended since it began and always completely loved), Cinepocalypse now has a new venue, a larger and more ambitious slate of programming, and dozens of special guests. It’s going to be bigger and better than any festival of its kind the city has ever seen, and I can’t wait to be there as much as possible to see as many cool movies as possible.
