Radio-Canada, a French Canadian TV network, has renewed the drama Les rescapés for a second season.

However, the TV network didn't officially confirm it. We only learned it through a list of show which will receive funding from the Fonds Quebecor, a private patronage program for TV production.

This show created by Frédéric Ouellet (Grande ourse) follows a family from Montreal in 1964. Gérald Boivin (Roy Dupuis), a detective of the Montreal Police, and his family have been mysteriously transported in the Montreal of 2010. While being in a-not-so distant future, the Boivins will question their values and beliefs. Besides, whether they like it or not, the family has to build closer ties. However, in order to go back to where they came from, the Boivins must find the man who sent them in the future.

Yesterday, the Genie Awards, Canada's equivalent of the Oscars for those who don't know, were handed out. This year, Polytechnique dominated the Genie Awards and even took the award for Best Motion Picture. However, the presentation of the award on TV and on webcast was too short. Besides, it wasn't a live presentation and not all the awards were shows on TV/webcast. Second Besides: When will a TV network (and not some cable network that few Canadians have) broadcast the Genie Awards? Anyway, without further ado, here's the presentation of the winners.

This morning, the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television (Acct) had announced the nominees for the 30th Genie Awards. For those who don't know, this is the Canadian equivalent of the Oscars. This year, the leader in the race is Polytechnique with 11 nominations. Moreover, the winners will be announced on April 12, 2010.

This afternoon, the nominees for the Jutra Award, Quebec's own Oscars, were announced. Unlike last year, there are two new things that we should expect to see. The first one being that the jury will be formed by 18 people. Secondly, all members of the jury have seen the films that are nominated. Besides, the host of evening will be Patrice L'Écuyer and the ceremony will take place at La Tohu on March 28. Also note that the Jutra Award will be broadcasted live on Radio-Canada. Since genre films are almost absent from the Canadian big screen, the creators of Grande ourse: La clé des possibles deserve to be lauded. In fact, this film is technically well directed as much as its Asian or American counterparts. However, the appreciation of this film shouldn't be done at any price since the script is its weakest link. After all, is it that easy to adapt a TV series in less than two hours?

For those who don't live in Quebec (a predominantly French-speaking Canadian province), this film is a spin-off of a hit TV series I saw in High school. After the abduction of Émile Biron (Normand Daneau), his best friend, by an old witch (Monique Mercure), former journalist Louis-Bernard Lapointe (Marc Messier) learns from Charles Foucault (Frédéric Gilles), an academic, that he has to go in a parallel universe.
