The film contains 163 minutes of special computer generated effects.
Many scenes were filmed in St. Petersburg, Russia, although most of the series takes place in Moscow. Director Vladimir Bortko, who lives in St. Petersburg, decided in favor of it because, in his words, "St. Petersburg today still looks more like the 1930s Moscow".
Documentary black-and-white footage of the 1930s Moscow is included in the final episodes.
In the original Russian version of the series, the voice of Alexandr Galibin's character Master is actually dubbed by Sergei Bezrukov, who plays Ieshua Ha-Notsri (Jesus).
