If you’re like me, you spend a lot of August yelling “Summer is over!” to your nearest and dearest — and they don’t take kindly to that. Summer TV is in its twilight, while fall premieres loom on the horizon after the Emmy Awards on September 15.
But summer is not over, and there’s plenty of new titles to stream in the Disney bundle. Disney+ will premiere new Star Wars and “Winnie the Pooh” titles for kids, as well as the original series “Are You Sure?!” following BTS’s Jimin and Jung Kook. Hulu will become home to “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” “The Woman King,” “Smile,” and more movie titles, as well as the home for FX series — this month: “The New York Times Presents: Lie to Fly: Documentary Premiere.” Hulu originals “Solar Opposites” returns on August 12, and “Reasonable Doubt” for its second season starting August...

To date, Disney has tried to play an original animated film, a Marvel title, and an Emma Stone 101 Dalmatians villainess movie in theaters and on the PVOD tier of the studio’s streaming service simultaneously, and this weekend they’ll accelerate windows again on the Dwayne Johnson-Emily Blunt theme park-inspired title Jungle Cruise.
Given how we’ve seen Disney+ Premier siphon ticket sales with Black Widow in its initial Friday-to-Saturday decline and second weekend drop, industry estimates are conservative heading into the weekend for Jungle Cruise at around $25M domestic at 4,200+ theaters –the widest to date– and another $40M abroad for a $65M global start. We’re hearing that Disney will release first weekend global Disney+ Premier revenue figures as well on Jungle Cruise.
The Jaume Collet-Serra directed film opens in major international markets starting today with France and Italy, then adds Germany, Russia, Australia, Japan, Korea, Brazil,...

John Ortiz has been cast in a leading role of the ABC drama pilot “Promised Land,” Variety has learned.
The show is described as an epic, generation-spanning drama about two Latinx families vying for wealth and power in California’s Sonoma Valley. Ortiz joins previously announced cast members Christina Ochoa and Mariel Molino.
Ortiz will star as Joe Sandoval, the patriarch of the Sandoval family, a wealthy vineyard-owning family in the Sonoma Valley. Joe took a small vineyard owned by a former rival and turned it into a wine and beverage empire, alienating many, including members of his own family, along the way. More than just a savvy corporate fighter, Joe can do every job there is to do on a vineyard, but finds himself at a crossroads when an enemy from his past resurfaces.
Ortiz had his directorial debut at the Atlantic Theater with the play “Halfway Bitches Go Straight to Heaven.

Sony Pictures is in early development on a new adaptation of the classic sitcom “Bewitched,” starring Elizabeth Montgomery.
Montgomery starred for eight seasons as Samantha Stephens, a witch married to an ordinary man named Darrin (Dick York and later Dick Sargent) and whose magical powers often cause — yet, sometimes solve — a few wrinkles in her life as a typical suburban housewife.
Created by Sol Saks, under executive producer Harry Ackerman, “Bewitched” ran from 1964 to 1972 on ABC and was a defining example of the genre. Its spinoff, “Tabitha” (focused on Samantha and Darren’s daughter), ran for one season.
The new film comes from producers John Davis and John Fox with a script written by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett. Matalas has an overall deal at CBS and is currently co-running “Star Trek: Picard.” The quartet is also developing the “Witch Mountain” remake for Disney Plus.
Notably, this is not Sony...

Sony Pictures is in early development on a new movie take on the ’60s sitcom “Bewitched” that starred Elizabeth Montgomery.
The new “Bewitched” movie will be written by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett, who are the creators behind the series “MacGyver” and “12 Monkeys.”
John Davis and John Fox are developing the film that’s based on the original sitcom series.
“Bewitched” ran for eight seasons and 254 episodes beginning in 1964 and was the story of a witch married to an ordinary man, whom she does not inform of her special powers until after their wedding. She agrees to attempt to hide her magic from extended family and the outside world but struggles to hide her instincts with hilarious results.
Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman starred in a 2005 film directed by Nora Ephron also based on “Bewitched.” That film however was about Ferrell playing an actor who unknowingly teams with a...

Exclusive: Sony Pictures has set a movie based on Bewitched, the classic TV series that starred Elizabeth Montgomery. Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett, who ran the MacGyver and 12 Monkeys series, will write the script. John Davis and John Fox are producing through Davis Entertainment.
Sony tried a romantic comedy movie version in 2005, which Nora Ephron directed and which starred Nicole Kidman as the witch and Will Ferrell as her hapless husband Darrin. This one will be different, I’m told. Its jumping-off point is the series, in which a witch marries an advertising exec and then tries to hide her powers and her crazy relatives who drop in often.
Montgomery starred with Dick York (later replaced by Dick Sargent) in the ABC series that ran from 1964-72. The perfect TV series homemaker facade was used effectively in the recent WandaVision series, and the premise — the wife who has a...

Florida Georgia Line member Brian Kelley’s plan to bring a country-music musical to life as a legit stage production is now extending to a movie version that is being developed simultaneously.
Kelley and his partners announced not just a film iteration of “May We All” — whose planned staging has been put off due to the pandemic — but the director who’s been tapped for a movie version: Andy Fickman, whose credits include directing and exec-producing CBS’ TV series “Kevin Can Wait” as well as a number of feature films and stage productions.
The stage version, announced in Variety in 2019, was set for a developmental production at Memphis’ Playhouse in the Square in fall 2020, to have been followed by an official Nashville premiere in 2021. As lockdowns have pushed any of these stage debuts further back, producers decided to move up a film adaptation.

Dwayne Johnson became the biggest, most marketable and highest-paid star in the industry by relying entirely on the strength of his personal brand, which has worked wonders for him over the last two decades. Not all of his movies are what you would call classics, but they tend to do solid business at the box office despite many of them being completely indistinguishable from each other.
If you were asked to name one Dwayne Johnson film where he played a character in a beige shirt who was caught in a race against time to avoid a catastrophic event while forced to battle various CGI critters, would you choose Race to Witch Mountain, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, sequel The Next Level, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island or Rampage?

Exclusive: The Disney live action team is in early development on a reboot of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day with Matt Lopez writing. 21 Laps and Jim Henson Company, who produced the first film, will return as producers. The film will be developed for Disney+.
The original film is based on the Judith Viorst children’s book and is considered one of the more popular children books of all time. Dwayne Johnson is no stranger to sci-fi, having tackled a number of different roles in almost every imaginable twist on the genre, and the results have been unsurprisingly inconsistent. After first dipping his toes into the water when he was still a full-time professional wrestler in a 2000 episode of Star Trek: Voyager, his next foray into sci-fi couldn’t have gone much worse.
Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales was a bizarre abomination that reeked of intentionally abstract self-indulgence and rode a wave of critical apathy to a box office total of less than $375,000. From there, Johnson has revisited the genre in the form of tedious video game adaptation Doom, the bland and forgettable Race to Witch Mountain remake, completely ignored animation Planet 51 and the surprisingly entertaining Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

Warner Bros is putting the wheels in motion on new Father of the Bride movie, with Matt Lopez penning the script. This latest reboot will revolve around a Latinx family, a first for the franchise.
This marks the third retelling of the story that began with the Spencer Tracy original in 1950 and was most recently remade by Disney in 1991 starring Steve Martin. That film spawned a sequel in 1995.
The latest film will tell the story of a father coming to grips with his daughter’s upcoming wedding through the prism of multiple relationships within a big, sprawling Cuban-American family. It will be more of a rom-com than previous versions of film.
Sources say Lopez was inspired by his own cross-cultural nuptials and the many epic Cuban weddings he has attended, some of which he’s still recovering from.
Jesse Ehrman and Paul Perez will oversee for Warners.

With a long weekend now upon us, folks are no doubt going to be seeking out fresh content to dig into and though today – and the next few days – are actually a bit light on new movies and TV shows when it comes to the major streaming services, there’s still some stuff worth checking out.
Of course, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and HBO Max, in particular, just delivered massive drops to their subscribers on the first of the month, with each platform bringing a ton – and we do mean a ton – of new arrivals. So, it’s understandable that July 3rd, 4th and 5th may be a bit on the light side.
But again, there’s enough here that you should find something to satisfy you. And if you don’t, well, like we just said, July 1st brought with it more than enough to keep you busy.

Both are your typical sports-based films about a failing team who gets a boost from a coach who is willing to push them to be their best,...
