Exclusive: Police Academy veteran Steve Guttenberg and Vacation‘s Christie Brinkley have boarded Michael W. Gray’s coming-of-age family comedy American Summer.
Shooting has begun in Northern New Jersey and will extend into mid-October. Gray is directing from a script he wrote with Jennifer B. White.
Pic follows Mikey (Guttenberg), now in his 60s, who vividly journeys back to his childhood during one of the best summers of his life when he met the girl of his dreams, Kelly, scored a spot on the travel
baseball team, worked his first job and began his growth out of boyhood — all in the sudden wake of his dad missing overseas on a military mission.
Logan Gray stars as Young Mikey and Mia Talerico (Disney’s Good Luck Charlie) stars as Young Kelly. Also starring are Dan Lauria, Cullen Moss, Erinn Ruth, Michael Cuomo (Nanny), Ellen Toland (Inside the Rain), Stephen Krahel, former baseball stars Lee Mazzilli and Luis Sojo, plus newcomers Callie Reese (What Breaks the Ice), Cash Chisum, Jaba Keh, Carter J Thomas, Max Malas, Maximus Virgili, Chance Stout, and Noodle (the family puppy who saves the day).
“American Summer is a tale for a multi-generational audience to enjoy together. I look forward to sharing the film with the world as I want to bring people together to laugh and feel in their own way,” said Gray.
“I’m excited to be working on such a feel-good movie,” Guttenberg said. “The story requires the creative team to put together a narrative that is not only universal, but unique in its own style. American Summer has the potential to bring generations together, and that’s what audiences ask for in a great family film.”
Gray (A Birder’s Guide to Everything Jamie Marks Is Dead) and Michael Cuomo are producing. Guttenberg, Brinkley, Brian Dubin and Stephen Krahel are EPs. Josh Folan and Danny Ward are co-producers.
American Summer is a co-production of Relentless Filmz (Gray) and Brooklyn Owl Pictures (Cuomo). Gray is repped by Ramo Law. Guttenberg is repped by Vault Entertainment and CAA. Brinkley is repped by Artist Brand Alliance and Untitled Entertainment.

The Young and the Restless (Y&r) spoilers show that it looks like Claire Grace (Hayley Erin) is going to be leaving her job as a nanny to Harrison Abbott (Redding Munsel), after being pushed to go back to work for Victor Newman (Eric Braeden).
While at first, this may seem terrible for Kyle and her future, it actually maybe it’s saving grace.
Claire made it abundantly clear that she did not want to pursue a romantic relationship with Kyle while she was a nanny to Harrison.
It wouldn’t feel right. Now, however, if she has to leave her job as Harrison’s nanny this would free up a lot of room for their relationship, which many fans would be excited about.

Plot: When Sophie’s high school choir is selected for an Italian tour culminating in a performance for the Pope in Vatican City, JJ sees this as an opportunity to bond with his new stepdaughter, so he volunteers to help chaperone the group through the Venetian canals, across Florence’s renowned bridges and into Rome’s most historic sites. Instead he finds that he and Sophie have become unwitting pawns in a terrorist plot that could end the world as we know it.
Review: My Spy originally debuted at the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic after being pulled from release in August 2019. With mediocre reviews, the Dave Bautista-led action-comedy was solid family entertainment when audiences sorely needed new things to watch. Four years later, Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman have reunited for a sequel that is bigger and better than the original but still nowhere near as good as it should be.

Short films generated by artificial intelligence are popping up at more and more film festivals, and the largest event yet is dedicating an entire section to AI-generated movies.
The 2024 Tribeca Festival announced Friday it will host Sora Shorts, a new program featuring five original short films all made using OpenAI’s text-to-video AI model Sora. It’s not the first time AI films have made their way to a major film festival, but it is the first time movies made with Sora have.
Sora still hasn’t been released to the public and is new even for the most seasoned AI filmmakers, but OpenAI gave the cohort of five directors early access to the program — so long as they each agreed to the filmmaking terms surrounding AI as negotiated last year with the DGA, WGA, and SAG-AFTRA guilds.

Three months after SAG-AFTRA ended its long and bitter strike against the studios, guild president Fran Drescher took a glamourous and humorous victory lap in front of some of her most notable members Saturday at the SAG Awards.
Thanking IATSE, “Teamsters and basic crafts” at the top of her onstage remarks during the ceremony, Drescher also laid down a marker for what could be more labor unrest to come.
“You took the heroes journey and stood at the front lines, strike captains led the march on the picket lines and we all showed up to the rallies because you understood what our massive contribution means to this marvelous industry,” Drescher told the nominees and guests at the Shrine Auditorium. “This was a seminal moment in our union’s history that has set the trajectory for many generations to come.”

Exclusive: Brooklyn-based filmmaker Ged Dickersin (Coda) is launching True Indy, a production company intent on making films that can and should be made independently, with filmmakers telling acutely relevant stories for the world market.
True Indy sees the opportunity to attract financing for films that can be made in the $1 million-$5 million range, reducing the financial risk to investors and increasing the chances for a return on the investment. The company is introducing its slate of original U.S.-born indies at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin, as well as looking to partner with filmmakers from around the world in international co-productions.
“Independent filmmaking has developed so much, with budgets that exceed what the new world market can return, making it difficult for private equity to support the independents,” Dickersin said. “Coming out of the pandemic and the strikes, the cost of making a film has inflated drastically,...

Following a turbulent year marked by dueling industry strikes and the violent contraction–if not yet full pop–of the streaming bubble, 2024 has thus far been pretty good to Hollywood. It certainly helps that we’re in the middle of awards season, which for cineastes amounts to a three-month holiday largely characterized by voluminous binge-watching. And not just binge-watching of the year’s top films. For the curious, the season also offers up a smuggler’s bounty full of talking special post-screening Q&As, roundtables, filmmaker panels, celebratory cocktail receptions and more.

“I’m an unlikely labor leader,” Fran Drescher acknowledges on a late November evening.
Before this summer, Drescher long had been synonymous in the public imagination with her most iconic role, Fran Fine, in the popular ’90s CBS sitcom The Nanny, which she tailored to her comedic strengths, including her thick Queens accent. The sassy childcare worker to a posh New York family became inextricably linked with her persona, even after Drescher launched other sitcoms, started a cancer nonprofit and, eventually, was elected as the president of Hollywood’s largest union, SAG-AFTRA, in 2021.
But her public profile took a dramatic turn after SAG-AFTRA called a strike in July, joining the Writers Guild of America in the first double work stoppage involving the two unions in more than 60 years. In the spotlight during the months that followed, Drescher carved out a new lane with her distinctive advocacy for her 160,000 members: at once fierce and combative (yes,...

It’s almost time again for me to pack my bags and head to Park City, Utah, for the 2024 edition of the Sundance Film Festival. The last few years have been challenging for the fest, with the 2021 and 2022 editions only being online due to the pandemic. The 2023 edition was a hybrid version that sported a few high-profile debuts, including A24’s horror hit Talk to Me, but overall was a bit of a modest year in terms of stuff that broke out. However, 2024 seems to be a high-end year for the fest, with tons of big stars on the way to the festival, including Pedro Pascal, Kristen Stewart (there with two movies), Sebastian Stan, Woody Harrelson and many more.
It’s always interesting to note the trend in storytelling at this famous indie fest. In recent years, the pandemic weighed highly on the fest, with many films acknowledging the toll it took,...

There are narrative flourishes and then there are narrative flourishes. And one in the new film from director Amy Glazer (Seducing Charlie Barker, The Surrogate) is a doozy. How much you appreciate this heartwarming drama about a female pilot who discovers that her grandmother may actually be a legendary figure in aviation history will depend on how much you’re willing to go along with its major plot twist, which won’t be revealed here but is relatively easy to figure out. But if you’re willing to suspend some disbelief, 7000 Miles, recently showcased at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, offers myriad pleasures, not the least of which is a terrific performance by Wendie Malick. The veteran sitcom actress (Dream On, Just Shoot Me, Hot in Cleveland) anchors the film with her charismatic turn in a rare leading role that Katharine Hepburn would have killed for.

"You should've just stopped at cleaning toilets." Brainstorm Media has revealed the first official trailer for Raging Grace, an indie horror thriller made by filmmaker Paris Zarcilla - making his feature directorial debut. The film premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the Grand Jury Prize as well as the Thunderbird Rising Award. Arriving on VOD to watch this December. An undocumented Filipina immigrant and her daughter become ensnared by horrifying truth while working as a caretaker for a terminally ill old man. As they take care of this strange man, they unwittingly become entangled in a chilling secret. Starring Max Eigenmann, Jaeden Boadilla, Leanne Best, and David Hayman as Mr. Garrett. It also won awards at the Neufchâtel Fantasia Film Festival, including the Audience Award. While this story isn't particularly unique nowadays (also see Sundance winner Nanny), there is clearly something going on in this.

Exclusive: Veteran British director Susanna White has revealed she’s working on a feature film based on her teenage life set against changes in the fashion world, as she gears up for today’s launch of Apple TV+ period drama The Buccaneers.
White is developing an untitled script for the BFI, the first time she has written a feature script herself, and the plot is based on her personal coming of age story. “It’s the story of me at 13, set in the world of fashion in early 1970s,” she told Deadline in an interview. “It’s very fun, sexy and hopefully moving.”
We hear the film will follow 13-year-old Gingernut as she grows up with the fur trade’s decline playing out in the background. The plot will see her trying to make sense of her parents’ dysfunctional relationship and include themes of family, growing up, betrayal, love and loss.

Deep in negotiations with the studios in trying to seal the deal on a new three-year contract, SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher made it very clear today, she leads in her own way.
“I can lead with empathy, I can be me,” said Drescher in a video this morning posted on social media.
Drescher added: “I’m getting ready now to go to work, and I just want you to know that I feel a sense of strength, not anger, and I feel a sense of optimism, not negativity.”
That optimism may be welcomed words as the actors guild strike hits its 111th day today. The AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA have started their latest round of renewed talks on Oct. 24 with more conversations scheduled for today.
Simultaneously refuting and mocking criticism of her leadership style, the recently overwhelmingly- re-elected guild boss also noted in the edited video that she “can still rock a red lip.

Exclusive: Fran Drescher is less concerned with a meeting of several showrunners with Writers Guild leadership this week and more concerned with studios and streamers getting back to the bargaining table to make a fair deal.
“The showrunners meeting with the WGA? I don’t know really how that makes me hopeful for the studio CEOs coming to the table,” the recently reelected SAG-AFTRA president told Deadline on Wednesday as she was leaving an L.A. solidarity march and rally outside Paramount Studios.
After an on-off-on-off back and forth over the past few weeks, Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, Fargo’s Noah Hawley and others are set to sit down with the guild negotiating committee Friday at WGA headquarters on Fairfax and 3rd. Always intended as an “information session,” drama around scheduling the meeting has been perceived by some as an attempt by the AMPTP to carve out discord among the scribes and their guild.

Late “Night of the Living Dead” creator George A. Romero has one final film in the works.
Romero, who died in 2017 at age 77 after battling lung cancer, wrote a treatment for film “Twilight of the Dead” before passing away. Per Romero’s estate, the film is the “seventh and final installment” in the “Living Dead” franchise. The project was first revealed in 2021, but Deadline reported that newly relaunched Roundtable Entertainment is now moving forward with production and applying for a SAG-AFTRA waiver amid the strike for a slated late 2023 start date. The waiver would allow production to happen in spite of SAG-AFTRA work stoppage orders.
Romero’s widow Suzanne Romero, who will produce the film, said in a statement, “I’m delighted to be joining forces with Roundtable to bring the eerie evolution of Romero’s universe to the screen. Roundtable impressed me with their long-term and deep love of George’s work.

SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher joined the picket lines in New York on Thursday, armed with a new slogan that suggested the actors will not back down.
“We’re in it to win it. And our new hashtag is, ‘Yield to Our Deal,’” Drescher said.
Speaking in front of the Netflix offices near Union Square, and flanked by former SAG presidents Melissa Gilbert and Richard Masur, Drescher urged the gathered union members to keep up their morale as the strike goes on, while touching on key issues such as residuals and the use of artificial intelligence.
“We have to keep up our resolve. We are not going to back down. We are not going to be stepped on anymore for CEO greed and Wall Street greed at our expense when they can’t do it without us,” Drescher said.

It was a typical day on the set of “Gladiator 2” in Malta. British director Ridley Scott was orchestrating a complex sequence featuring the film’s star, Paul Mescal, and several hundred extras, all of it unfolding inside a replica of the Colosseum. They were more than halfway through the arduous three-month production of the film that marked the long-awaited sequel to Scott’s 2000 Oscar best picture winner, when, on July 13, at high noon, Scott called “Cut!” Quickly, word began to spread that half a world away, talks between SAG-AFTRA and the major studios and streaming services had collapsed.
Given that the cast and crew of the action epic had been living in a bubble, the prospect of a strike had seemed remote. But it didn’t take long for the grim reality to sink in. Within hours, Scott and his producers had sent a note to the crew...

Mark Ruffalo is looking to return to his indie roots during the SAG-AFTRA strike.
For the first time since 1980, the actors’ union has issued a work stoppage order against studios after the union did not reach an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
“The Kids Are All Right” actor and Marvel star Ruffalo took to Twitter to encourage fellow stars to prioritize indie filmmaking over allegedly mishandled mega-studio productions that drive the wealth disparity in Hollywood.
“How about we all jump into indies now?” Ruffalo wrote. “Content creators create a film & TV-making system alongside the studio & streaming networks? So there is actual competition. Then we just do what we always do — create great content & they can buy it, or we take it out ourselves & We share in those sales.”
Ruffalo added of studio executives, “They’ve created an empire of billionaires & believe that we are no longer of value.

SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher is done babysitting studio executives amid the failed Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers negotiations that led to the current strike.
The “Nanny” TV icon told Variety that Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger’s recent comments about the SAG-AFTRA strike were “tone deaf” and only further cemented Iger’s status as a “land baron of a medieval time” with a massive wealth disparity in Hollywood. During a Thursday morning CNBC interview ahead of the official declaration of the dual-union strike, Iger called the then-possible work stoppage a “very disturbing” and “disruptive” development — especially post-covid.
“I found them terribly repugnant and out of touch. Positively tone deaf,” Drescher said about Iger’s statement hours before the official SAG strike was announced. “I don’t think it served him well. Fran Drescher fired up her base today in a speech outlining strike plans.
The Nanny star said that she was “shocked” by the way that studio execs are treating actors. “I cannot believe it, quite frankly, how far apart we are on so many things. It is disgusting. Shame on them. They stand on the wrong side of history.”
She added that actors can’t keep being “marginalized, disrespected, and dishonored” by a business model that has been changed by streaming. “If we don’t stand tall right now, we are all going to be in trouble. We are all going to be in jeopardy of being replaced by machines and big business,” she added.

“There seems to be no real negotiations here,” a SAG-AFTRA member close to talks tells Deadline on AI talks with the AMPTP. “Actors see Black Mirror’s ‘Joan Is Awful’ as a documentary of the future, with their likenesses sold off and used any way producers and studios want.” The union member is referring to the opening episode of the latest season of the Charlie Brooker-created satire starring Salma Hayek and Annie Murphy. “We want a solid pathway. If you were wondering what’s poppin’ with best-selling rap star Jack Harlow this month, well, he’s officially in the industry, baby. The film industry to be precise.
The same artist who recently claimed he was “the hardest white boy since the one who rapped about vomit and sweaters” makes his acting debut with a remake of the 1992 sports comedy classic “White Men Can’t Jump.”
But there’s nothing hard about this new movie, even with its R-rated language. It’s a near total Disneyfication of the original in which all the incredible dialogue, daredevil sports moves, charismatic acting and unpredictable plotting have been replaced with vaguely good-natured banter and shaggy underdog clichés.
“White Men Can’t Jump” stars Sinqua Walls — so excellent in Nikyatu Jusu’s “Nanny” — as Kamal, a former high school basketball legend who fell on hard times and now barely scrapes by as a delivery driver.

“The Nanny” reunion may still be happening according to series star and SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher. While on Sirius Xm’s “The Julie Mason Show,” the actor teased that the possible November special could “maybe” become a backdoor pilot. She also highlighted the importance of SAG sticking with the Writers Guild of America during the WGA strike.

And hopefully the strike will be over soon enough, a deal can be forged with the Writer’s Guild and the AMPTP and we’ll be able to go back to figuring out what we want to do for a ‘Nanny’ kind of reunion, maybe backdoor pilot,” Drescher said.

At Variety’s 10 Producers to Watch panel, held March 31 at the Sun Valley Film Festival, the first order of business was defining what it means to be a producer, a title — and a role — that encapsulates a number of responsibilities on a film.
“The way that I describe it is you’ve got to know a little bit about a lot of things in filmmaking,” said Rachael Fung, whose film “Fremont” later won best narrative film in the festival’s One in a Million category, recognizing features made for less than $1 million. “You’ve got to be able to understand and talk to every single person that touches the film at every single stage. And also it’s about finding those directors and filmmakers and understanding their vision and figuring out the best way to get that to screen.”
“There are practical things like getting money for the movie, casting,...

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.
Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).
The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

Award honorees include Josh Brolin, who will receive the Vision Award, and Sophie Thatcher, who will be given the Rising Star Award. “Last year, people were dying to get out, and this year our ticket sales are outpacing 2022. Once again, there’s a strong appetite for live events,” says festival founder and executive director Teddy Grennan.

Jordan Peele is staying in business with Universal Pictures, as the studio has just set an untitled fourth film from the “Nope” writer/director for release on Dec. 25, 2024. Additionally, an untitled horror/thriller from Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions will open in theaters on Friday, Sept. 27, 2024.
Other movies dated for Christmas 2024 include James Cameron’s third “Avatar” movie and the third movie in the “Sonic the Hedgehog” film franchise. Recently, Broadway adaptation “Wicked, Part 1” scooted out of the Christmas timeframe to occupy a new Thanksgiving slot. “Wicked,” like the Peele project, will be released by Universal.
Peele’s feature directorial debut, “Get Out,” was released by Universal in 2017 and grossed over $255 million against a budget of just $4.5 million. On top of being an astounding commercial success, it netted Peele a Best Original Screenplay Oscar with additional nominations for Best Picture, Director and Actor. Two days after ”Everything Everywhere All at Once“ won seven Oscars, including best picture, the SXSW Film Festival, where Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s movie launched last year, has announced its own awards. To be clear, “Eeaao” was a studio-backed opening night premiere (not one of the smaller movies launched in competition at the indie-focused fest), but you can still feel the excitement in Austin around the landmark Oscar win. After all, SXSW was the first festival to take Daniels seriously, awarding them top prize for their Battles music video (“My Machines”) in 2012.
Will any of the movies or directors screening here this year go on to change film history?
With five days still to go at SXSW, the juries convened to present the winners.
Narrative feature honors went to writer-director Paris Zarcilla’s “Raging Grace.” On the surface, the tense story of an undocumented Filipina house cleaner and...

Imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny learned Monday from his lawyer that a film detailing his poisoning and political activism won the Oscar for best documentary feature.
The 46-year-old politician was attending a court hearing via video link from the prison when his attorney broke the news to him about the documentary, “Navalny”, by director Daniel Roher, according to his spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh. She called it “the most remarkable announcement of an (Oscar) win in history.”
Yarmysh did not report what Navalny’s initial reaction was to the Oscar win.
