It's time for a new episode of Sweetpea on Starz, and this one was another enjoyable one. I think the premiere got off to a great start and set up the story nicely. And now, we see the aftermath of Rhiannon's first kill. Ready to jump into our review of Sweetpea episode 2, "This Sort of Thing Needs Some Feminine Energy?" Let's do it! Spoilers Below.

It's the next day and Rhiannon starts cleaning up the mess she made the night before after her first murder, Ryan. The guy she slept with before shows up and wants to buy her dad's transformation or something to do with the business. But right now is not the right time dude. And she rightfully closes the door in his face. Honestly, go away right now.
Anyways, Rhiannon has bigger things to worry about since the police has now found Ryan's dead body.

Hi, fellow Ella Purnell fans! If you've checked out the talented actress' new series on Starz, Sweetpea, last week then you may be eagerly anticipating the release of a new episode today. However if you've checked the Starz app, as well as the television schedule, there's actually no new episode of Sweetpea today. Why is that?
The first episode of the dark comedy premiered on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024 and it honestly really managed to impress me. Of course we don't condone anyone's murderous rage the way Rhiannon snapped by the end of the episode, though I feel like the premiere did a good job of establishing the character and the circumstances she's in that leads her to his bloody high she's on.

Well if you want to continue to see her story play out the way I do, then you'll have to wait one more day. That's because Sweetpea...

Ella Purnell is one of the fastest-rising stars today thanks to her breakout roles in Fallout and Yellowjackets. There’s no stopping her from conquering Hollywood as she now stars in the dark comedy-drama Sweetpea in a role that seemingly fits her acting style.

Sky’s Sweetpea is a terrific show to add to your Halloween list this year. The dark comedy tells the story of Rhiannon Lewis, a woman who changes drastically after the sudden death of her father. Rhiannon’s always thought herself to be invisible. This terrible feeling sets in first because she’s been bullied from the ages of 12-16, so much so that she starts to pull her hair out from stress and anxiety. Over the years, even as an adult, she struggles to share her opinions with her co-workers or to be able to assert herself. Do you know how the story of a lot of male serial killers begins with one small trigger that messes everything up? Rhiannon’s story runs along similar lines. Soon after her dad dies, Rhiannon’s dog gets run over by a car too. Depressed and lonely, she cries by the canal...

With a simmering, powderkeg rage fueling the backbone of the series, “Sweetpea” is largely a triumph. Plenty of stories over the years deal with female fury, isolation, and overall messiness. In the Starz adaptation of the novel of the same name by Cj Skuse, those feelings are amplified through a bloody killing spree as our antihero protagonist desperately seeks to be seen, no matter the consequences — or body count.

Have you ever been so annoyed with someone you thought, “Man, I wish they were dead”? Have you ever acted on that impulse? The sizable gap between the group who says yes to the first question and the group who says yes to both questions is wide enough that calling both “groups” presents a form of false equivalency. One “group” includes pretty much everyone on Earth, while the other consists of the rare breed of people who inspire Ryan Murphy shows. But here we are, once again, with a new series trying to bridge the gap between identifiable frustrations and sociopathic actions, this time using misplaced tension, so-so humor, and unconvincing empowerment narratives to liven up its rote story.
As far as revenge fantasies go, “Sweetpea” is fine. Ella Purnell’s aspiring serial killer is given ample motivation and quickly acts on it. (There’s a dead body by the...

Is Sweetpea Based on a Book? The Murderous Wallflower Story Explored - Main Image
Considering the prominence of shows being adapted through different original source materials, could this new thriller from Starz be any different? Is Sweetpea based on a book, too? Here's how the vengeful wallflower was created.
Is Sweetpea Based on a Book? Explaining The Wallflower's Original Source Material
The story of Sweetpea follows the nearly invisible girl, Rhiannon Lewis (played by Arcane and Fallout star Ella Purnell), who has never gained anyone's attention her whole life.
Apart from being overlooked by store clerks and men she rides with on the bus, her own boss also seems to completely ignore her existence or potential for a promotion at work.
However, Rhiannon gets "pushed over the edge and loses control", leading her to a transformational journey of expressing her vengeance in the most not-so-healthy way: on a murder streak.

Sweetpea starring Ella Purnell premiered today, and I am honestly already hooked! The fact that we hear Rhiannon's dialogue, and sometimes her thoughts match what we think as well let's not lie, is a great story device especially because she's a wallflower and has hardly anyone to talk to. Let's get into our review of Sweetpea episode 1, "Sorry For Your Loss, on Starz. Spoilers Below.
Right off the bat, you feel for Rhiannon. She walks and moves around in life with no one noticing her. Not on the bus, not at the market, and especially not at work. Even the guy who does notice her a bit and sleeps with Rhiannon only replies to her texts with emojis. Rude. Her family life is tough as well with her mom walking out, and her sister having moved to France and not really responsive or communicative. This poor girl.

Ella Purnell is hard to ignore. The wide-eyed British actress has drawn raves as a plucky survivor in Netflix‘s apocalyptic drama Fallout, and in her breakout role as a teenage queen bee in Showtime supernatural thriller Yellowjackets. TV Insider spoke with Purnell about her new darkly comedic and suspenseful six-part series, Sweetpea, In the Starz thriller, she pulls off playing someone invisible: the ignored and sidelined Rhiannon Lewis, a receptionist at a local newspaper who develops an intoxicatingly liberating taste for murder. Purnell shares what it felt like shooting Rhiannon’s first kill: “The animal comes out. It’s not something we ever do. It’s not something we’re allowed to do, especially as women where we have to really manage our emotions and be quite careful with what we let out and when we let it out to be encouraged to just scream, to just explode. Starz and BritBox have launched a bundle for new customers to access both digital platforms from a single subscription through Starz.com in a first for the platform.
The launch of the bundle, revealed on a Lionsgate earnings call in August, coincides with the debut of new and returning series from both streamers including Sweetpea, Three Women and the next installment of Outlander for Starz, and BritBox series Passenger, Joan with Sophie Turner, and Season 2 of Sherwood.

The offering is priced at $14.99 a month, reflecting a 25% savings for both apps. It debuts amid a broader bundling push among streamers to attract subscribers and reduce churn, and as Lionsgate Studios and Starz are set to split apart into two separate companies by year end.

Fans of U.K.-set programming, rejoice. Starz and BritBox announced a new partnership on Thursday for what is perhaps the most niche bundle in streaming.
Now, via the Starz website, viewers with $14.99 a month to spare can access both digital platforms via one subscription — at a 25 percent discount from subscribing to both seperately.
Starz, of course, is the U.S. cable brand behind the Outlander and Power franchises, as well as recent debut Three Women and, as of today, thriller Sweetpea. BritBox is the streaming-only platform for hours and hours of British programming launched in the U.S. in 2017 by BBC Studios and ITV and now solely owned by the former.
As corporate behemoths settle into the latest stage of the streaming era, where growing revenue is now key after years of over-spending, bundling has become quite popular — and has naturally left some cord-cutters with cable deja vu. The...

On a flight not so long ago, Ella Purnell managed to terrify the woman sat next to her after accidentally giving her a glimpse of the recent viewing history on her laptop.
“It was basically 50 shows about serial killers,” she recalls, speaking over coffee in a café near her flat in East London (which she admits she’s rarely been in due to excessive recent travel). “But specifically female serial killers, because they’re very different from male serial killers.”
As Purnell notes, the concerned neighbor was carrying a baby, which she then “literally moved” away from her.
“So I had to explain. I was like, ‘I’m so sorry, I’m actually researching, it’s part of my job… I promise you, I’m not a monster,'” she recalls. “But I’m not sure how convincing I was.”

At the start of Sweetpea, the new Starz/Sky Atlantic series adaptation of Cj Skuse’s novel of the same name, Rhiannon Lewis (Ella Purnell) is having a bad life. In voice-over, she catalogues the people she’d like to kill in a list that ranges from the man spreader on the bus and the cashier at the store who is always on the phone, all the way up to her high school nemesis, Julia Blenkingsopp (Nicôle Lecky).
Rhiannon is a quintessential horror protagonist. She is shy and meek, working a dead end job as the receptionist at a newspaper where she is taken advantage of by work colleagues. She is introverted and overlooked, pining for a romance with a shitty guy who won’t acknowledge her in public. Ella Purnell is done hiding her own rage.
“In a climate where we’re just getting increasingly silenced, [women] have a lot to say, and the more you try to silence someone the louder, in my experience, you want to scream,” the “Yellowjackets” and “Fallout” actress told IndieWire.
So it makes sense that Purnell’s latest series — and her debut as an executive producer — is with “Sweetpea,” a show that is like the “female ‘Dexter’ meets ‘Fleabag,'” according to the star.
The Starz official series description bills the dark comedy as a “deviously twisted coming-of-rage story,” something that also resonants with Purnell. And while the “rage” emphasis has been made trendy from creatives such as Taylor Swift to Diablo Cody, “Sweetpea” puts a murderous twist on finding your voice.
Purnell plays Rhiannon Lewis, a woman whose life passes her by…that is, until she finds power in wielding an ax.

We're stepping into the ring on the Pilot TV Podcast this week as we sent our very own journalistic heavyweight Boyd Hilton to chat to Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal about their Spanish-language boxing drama La Máquina on Disney+ [36:25 — 52:15 approx]. And that's not all in the fisticuff quarters, as we (non-literally) bash Kay for daring to take some time off work to go to a wellness retreat and give James an earful for his egregious (if entirely oblivious) queue-jumping.
Back on the actual TV talk front however, James, Kay, and Boyd embrace the spooky season's commencement with a listener question that's all about the best TV-based horrors. (No prizes for guessing how far we get without a shoutout for The Last Of Us!) There's also some chat about what the team have all been watching this week — including Apples Never Fall, Heartstopper Season 3, and, er, that Philip Schofield island thing on Channel 5.

Yellowjackets breakout Ella Purnell drew on previous experience of “not being afraid to look ugly” when leading Sweetpea, the irreverent Sky-Starz dramedy about a quiet wallflower who becomes a serial killer.
Speaking to Deadline in the days leading up to Sweetpea premiere, Purnell talked up her roles as Jackie in Yellowjackets and Lucy in Fallout, which allowed her to give breadth to her character Rhiannon in the C.J. Skuse adaptation.
“Yellowjackets was a really fun experiment in not being afraid to look ugly in environments where you initially look put together,” she said of playing Mean Girls-esque queen bee Jackie who ends up in a hole in the ground in the hit Paramount+ series. “Eventually she looks like s**t so bringing a bit of that to Rhiannon who doesn’t have a lot of pride in her appearance was important. As a young woman who has grown up...

Despite her upcoming murderous portrayal, Ella Purnell struggled to stomach her latest role.
As the British actress discussed her homicidal character Rhiannon Lewis in Sweetpea, premiering Oct. 10 on Starz and Sky, she admitted starring in the series did “take a toll” on her mentally.
“People think I must be really messed up, but I swear I’m a happy, well-adjusted human!” Purnell told The Guardian. “I can’t do horror films. I don’t really love watching too much gore, or any supernatural things. I’m not even really a big sci-fi person. And I’m not a gamer. So I don’t know how any of this has happened!”
The six-part series stars Purnell as Rhiannon, a quiet wallflower who develops a vengeful and intoxicatingly liberating taste for murder.

From Yellowjackets to Fallout and now murderous new drama Sweetpea, the British actor is killing it. But behind all the grisly roles, she’s really sweet ... honest
All Ella Purnell ever wanted to do was write children’s books about magical trees and talking ducks and happy bunny rabbits, and instead here she is chainsawing a man’s head off in a radioactive wasteland. Or freezing to death in the wilderness and being eaten by her closest friends. Or being so traumatised by school bullies that she takes up serial killing, slaughtering victims with her dead dad’s treasured pocketknife.
It might not be exactly what Purnell had in mind for her 20s, but spending the past few years committing, and being subject to, acts of stomach-churning violence has certainly had its upsides: the Londoner is now on the brink of TV superstardom. Purnell has been on a steep trajectory...

"Mindfulness can break noses." Netflix has revealed the official trailer for an interesting new German dark comedy series called Murder Mindfully, originally called Achtsam Morden in German. In 8 episodes, the story of a lawyer struggling with burn-out unfolds in a light-hearted way and with a great sense of absurdity as he turns his life completely upside down, soon allowing neither his mafia clients nor anything to upset him. Tom Schilling stars as Björn, a high-powered mafia lawyer, whoseeks peace in a mindfulness class to ease his stressful life. But as he explores the art of relaxation, he stumbles upon a darker method of finding inner peace — one that involves murder. The series main cast also includes Emily Cox, Murathan Muslu, Britta Hammelstein, Peter Jordan, Pamuk Pilavci, Johannes Allmayer, Sascha Geršak, Marc Hosemann, and Luca Maric. Yet another new series about how murder is cathartic (also see: Sweetpea). This series looks clever and kooky and funny.

The networks have also unveiled an extended second trailer for the six-part show to build buzz, which can be watched above. From Kirstie Swain, Sweetpea stars Yellowjackets’ Ella Purnell as Rhiannon Lewis, a quiet wallflower who develops a vengeful and intoxicatingly liberating taste for murder.
The series, which will launch in October, is based on the cult novel by C.J. Skuse. Starz jumped aboard as U.S. co-producer earlier this year and Power of the Dog maker See-Saw Films is producing with its new Patrick Walters-led label fanboy.
Purnell is one of the hottest TV talents out there at present, having impressed as Jackie Taylor in Paramount+’s Yellowjackets and subsequently led Prime Video’s Fallout video game adpatation. She is joined by Nicôle Lecky playing Julia, Jon Pointing as Craig, Calam Lynch (Bridgerton) as Aj, Leah Harvey (Foundation) as Marina.

In the latest episode of Industry — the HBO drama that follows the usually unhinged, occasionally evil, and always entertaining exploits of young financiers at the London offices of the fictional American bank Pierpoint & Co. — the well-heeled bankers have swapped business attire for costumes, in the name of raising money for needy children.

Sky Studios CEO Cecile Frot-Coutaz has said there is “no scenario” in which its pay-tv customers will not have access to content from Warner Bros. Discovery streamer Max when it launches in the UK.
Sky has been the sole home of HBO content in the UK for many years, but it is widely expected Wbd will move the content to its own streamer when their current output deal ends in 2025. Wbd has not officially set a date for a UK launch, but senior exec J.B. Perrette said earlier this year it would “crazy” not to go direct-to-consumer in the UK.
With that backdrop, speculation has been rampant about what the future of the Sky-Wbd partnership will look like, with both sides making positive noises about an agreement without clearly outlining what shape it could take.
Speaking today at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Frot-Coutaz echoed comments Sky CEO Dana Strong...

Fresh from its hugely impressive haul of nine Emmy nominations for hit Apple TV+ show “Slow Horses,” powerhouse producers See-Saw Films has unveiled a slate of new literary options also being developed for TV.
The British/Australian company, which in recent years has demonstrated its ability to amass acclaim, awards and audiences on the big screen and small, has landed the rights to three pieces of IP, including one that has already proved a hit on stage.
Playwright Benedict Lombe’s epic romance “Shifters” — starring “Supacell” lead Tosin Cole and “The Power” actress Heather Ageypong — is currently in the process of transferring to the West End after a sellout run at the Bush Theater (and with Idris Elba recently joining the play’s lineup of producers). But it’s now also being adapted by Lombe for TV with See-Saw, with plans to take the story beyond the stage play and into a returning series.

Starz has a new series coming our way and I am very excited about this one! The series is titled Sweetpea and it is a dark comedy-drama (which happens to be one of my favorite genre combos) that stars Ella Purnell, who can most recently be seen starring in Prime Video’s Fallout.
If you’re just as excited as I am about Sweetpea, I share everything we know so far about it. Including when and where to watch, the cast, and more!
Set to premiere on Starz, the series Sweetpea is based on author Cj Skuse’s 2017 book of the same name. The story follows Rhiannon Lewis (Purnell), a young woman who is bored with her uneventful life and tired of her being ignored. Rhiannon is lost in crowds, forgotten by peers, and passed over for promotions at work. She is in a relationship, well...sort of? The guy...
