New Delhi, March 23 (Ians) Filmmaker G. Ashok has shared the reason why he feels his Bollywood debut film "Durgamati" did not do as well as its original Telugu version "Bhaagamathie", which was also directed by him. He feels the film didn't do well because the Hindi version went directly to Ott and did not have a theatrical release.
"Theatrical release," Ashok cites as reason while talking to Ians when we ask him why "Durgamati" fared below expectaions. He adds: "Due to unprecedented times, we unfortunately couldn't release the film in theatres. Durgamati's strength is its horror element, and horror is only enjoyed with good sound in dark rooms like in theatres."
"Durgamati" stars Bhumi Pednekar, Maahie Gill and Jisshu Sengupta.
Speaking about his camaraderie with Bhumi, director Ashok said: "For the lead character in the film, I wanted a performer who could pull the show alone. Bhumi is known...

Actress Mahie Gill feels that she is not very marketable, and adds that the pressure of delivering hits is surely scary for bigger actors.
"I say this about myself, I am not very marketable in the sense that I can run a movie on my shoulders," Mahie told Ians, adding: "This scare is more for bigger actors. It is scary for these actors. It is scary for these people."
Mahie seems to have to secured a position among actors for whom performance matters more than the box office pressure. "If your film doesn't work but if you are appreciated as an actor you keep getting work," she pointed out.
Mahie made her debut in Bollywood in 2003 with "Hawayein" but she became a familiar face playing a new-age Paro in Anurag Kashyap's 2009 release, "Dev.D". Her notable Bollywood roles have been in "Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster", "Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns...

Arshad Warsi feels it is easy to get stereotyped as an actor, and very difficult to break away from it. The actor says he has managed to evade the image trap despite his overwhelming popularity in comic roles only because his serious roles were equally loved.
"It is difficult (to break away from stereotypes). We all get stereotyped -- all of us do, every actor does. That's how it is. You do a certain role or you do something that people enjoy, and then that is what you keep getting because that is ringing the box office," Arshad Warsi Said.
"It becomes difficult to get out of it. Fortunately for me, I've managed to do that purely because people have enjoyed my serious acting as well as my comedy," he added.
Arshad continued, "Usually, when somebody does comedy, a lot of (his/her) serious roles don't work because you can't...

Durgamati The Myth (Amazon)
Starring Bhumi Pednekar, Arshad Warsi, Jisshu Sengupta, Mahie Gill
Directed by Ashok
While cinema the worldover has made gigantic leaps in theme and execution, we seem to be trapped in a time warp. Who makes this kind of Chandamama mythological anymore? Unless they think the audience is a sucker for mumbo-jumbo…. The original Tamil-Telugu bi-lingual Bhagmathie was a blockbuster. Maybe Anushka Shetty’s bellowing bhoot act was a big turn-on to her fans, much in the same way that some men like to get whipped by their partner in bed.
You have to be really twisted to enjoy Bhumi Pednekar ‘s persecuted –bureaucrat-turns-into-a –flaming-fatale act. It is so funny it hurts, when it’s meant to be intimidating. It’s not the actress’ fault really. It’s the god-awful script made even more unbearable by the direction which plays every scene by numbers: 4 junior artistes on...

New Delhi, Dec 10 (Ians) Bollywood actress Mahie Gill says she puts in efforts to ensure that she does not end up repeating herself in the roles that she chooses to do.
"What started happening was that after Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster I started getting similar roles. So I felt that if I do the same things, everything will finish," Mahie told Ians.
Repetition gets boring after a point, she stressed.
"So, there is an effort that I don't do the same things, so that people tell me later on that I have done something different. Otherwise people get used to it and things become boring -- for an actor as well as for people," she added.
Mahie will next be seen in "Durgamati", where she plays a Cbi officer named Satakshi Ganguly. The horror film stars Bhumi Pednekar in the central role.

"Akshay (Kumar) sir gives you a lot of freedom as an actor. Makers of this film thought that I could do it, so he (Akshay Kumar) never interfered in my performance. Of course my director (G. Ashok) has supported me a lot. In this film, I completely surrendered myself to his vision," Bhumi said while interacting with Ians.
Bhumi plays an Ias officer in the film, which tells the story of an innocent government officer who becomes the victim of a major conspiracy involving powerful forces.

Mumbai, Nov 19 (Ians) Actress Bhumi Pednekar prefers to be part of entertaining projects that leave a message for the audience.
"My film should entertain, but at the same time it does seek to leave the audience with a thought that will hopefully change their thinking for the better. Most of my films have had heavy social messaging but even if you think of a film like 'Pati Patni Aur Woh', which was an out-and-out entertainer, you know the film clearly tells you that you don't have to succumb to societal pressures of marriage. Staying in a marriage is as much a woman's choice too," Bhumi explained.
She made her debut with "Dum Laga Ke Haisha" in 2015, and since then has been gradually delivering critically acclaimed performances.
"Every film has a certain set of audience and, for me, a film has to entertain its core audience. If it fails to do so,...

Bollywood actress Bhumi Pednekar says she is not an accidental actor and that her journey has been of survival.
"It's been five years and it still feels like a dream! I am not an accidental actor and I say this time and again. This is something that I really wanted to do and I have worked really hard to be here. I am born and brought up in Bombay so that definitely helped because just having some sort of a support system in the city, which is the city of our Hindi film industry, makes your journey slightly easy," Bhumi said.
"However, because I am not from a traditional film family or I really didn't have any contacts, I was very confused at first about how to go about it," she added.
The actress said she had to convince her parents that she wanted to be an actor. "I mustered...

Indian cinemas are shuttered, production continues to be at a standstill and the country remains in lockdown until at least May 31 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Unsurprisingly, consumption of television and streaming services has surged during this period. But digital may not be an existential threat to the film business.
India remains the most prolific film-producing country in the world, with an insatiable appetite for cinema, Hindi-language Bollywood, and regional. The 2018-19 financial year alone saw 2,446 films in 49 languages certified in the country.
According to the Ernst & Young annual report on India’s media and entertainment sector, theatrical business for 2019 was valued at $2.5 billion, making it fourth in the overall pecking order behind television’s $10.4 billion, print’s $3.9 billion and digital’s $2.9 billion. Cinema screen numbers have shrunk over the years to 9,600 for a population of 1.3 billion, and producers of several films, led by comedy “Gulabo Sitabo,” starring...

"I have been instinctively correct about the roles that I have chosen to bring to life and I'm grateful to the audiences for all the love. As an actor, only your body of work combined with the success of the films can result in more and better work and I'm truly grateful that audience and critics have loved my performances. I hope to continue doing good work and choosing the best scripts that the industry is making," Bhumi said.
