Just when I thought 2021 couldn't get worse, here we have 2 back to back appalling outings from GV Prakash. I have avoided watching so many films and yet to give John Abraham's "Satyameva Jayate 2" a chance. I want to save time by not watching it, or at least that's what i think. I'm a sucker for cheesy bad movies but the trailer was so awful. But here we have a strong contender and Jail is easily the worst film of the year along with Bhoomi, Jagame Thandhiram, Sabapathy, Navarasa, Trip, Vaazhl, Bachelor and Vijay Sethupathi's 2021 filmography (Check out my review for his Mughizh)
I remember when there was no other choice but to watch Navarasa. Despite it's pretentious casting and worst dialogues, it was beyond comprehension to think on how this totally ridiculous film was banked by Netflix India. I found myself laughing the whole time. You can ask me why did i watch it, let me state that i usually stay away from such films labelled with cringe and paid reviewers hype. But there are times i won't have an option but forced to watch it with my friends and hate every second for witnessing crap unfolding in front of my eyes with laughter and cringe reactions from those around me. I resisted to share my thoughts as all the criticism has been said and spewed forth for all the good reasons.
Now there's another overhyped movie, wish i could've skipped considering GV Prakash's awful 'Bachelor' a movie which was a trite observation on insecure types, losers, wannabe hippies. But I had hopes on Vasanthabalan who is back after almost 7 years, his last film was a decent ripoff of Amadeus. This was the only driving force to check out Jail, but he failed due to pathetic writing and mediocre acting by the lead, supporting characters, ridiculous villain and the awful songs. Too bad that most of the time the result is disappointing and absolutely superfluous. When the film arrived at the climax, i didn't even care. It was predictable as the lead loses his life, I just got detached as this film does a terrible job communicating with the audience with what emotions we're supposed to be feeling.
In Conclusion: A really bad filmmaking and it's high time that Tamil cinema should stop mediocre filmmakers from milking out delicate topics (Eelam Tamilians, Plight of Farmers, Malaysian Tamils, Gentrification, Kasthapadra Vada Chennai folks, Drone Shots, Rowdies, Porul, Pullingo Sambavams) and focus on good writing.
