To the ever-growing ‘unhappy men in space’ sci-fi subgenre we can now add Slingshot – a psychological thriller starring Casey Affleck, Laurence Fishburne and The Boys’ Tomer Capone as a trio of stressed-out astronauts.

The explorers are on a mission to Saturn’s moon, Titan, when something goes awry and they’re forced to attempt a risky slingshot manoeuvre in order to reach their destination. Meanwhile, Affleck’s character begins to hallucinate. Oh, and Fishburne’s brought a revolver with him for some reason.

Casey Affleck and Laurence Fishburne are traveling into another realm for psychological thriller “Slingshot.”

The film centers on an elite trio of astronauts who board a years-long, possibly compromised mission to Saturn’s moon Titan. “As the team gears up for a highly dangerous slingshot maneuver that will either catapult them to Titan or into deep space, it becomes increasingly difficult for one astronaut to maintain his grip on reality,” the official synopsis reads.

“Slingshot” is directed by Mikael Häfström with a script co-written by R. Scott Adams and Nathan Parker. Häfström previously directed 2007 film “1408,” which was based on a Stephen King short story, as well as features “Outside the Wire” and “The Rite.” Håfström first announced “Slingshot” in 2021.

The Pope’s Exorcist draws basis from the books An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories, penned by Catholic priest and exorcist Gabriele Amorth. Screenwriters Michael Petroni (The Rite) and Evan Spiliotopoulos (The Unholy), along with director Julius Avery (Overlord), eschew the biopic approach when exploring Amorth’s tenure as an exorcist in favor of a by-the-books horror movie. Russell Crowe is the sole saving grace in this diluted and often silly entry in exorcism horror.

Avery’s latest introduces his rebellious Gabriel Amorth (Crowe) in a rural village in 1987. Amorth walks in with remarkable confidence and jovial mischief in his eyes as he quickly exposes a case of psychosis, not possession, leaving the local priest splattered in blood and the family shocked. Amorth barely has time to cuckoo at nuns and get scolded by higher-ups at the Vatican before he’s summoned to a crumbling abbey in Spain.

Sunday Update: Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s The Super Mario Bros Movie has made history with the biggest worldwide opening ever for an animated title at $377.5M. Of that plumb pazzo result, an estimated $172.8M comes from the international box office. Wahoo!, indeed.

On the face of it, “The Pope’s Exorcist” would have you believe that it’s rooted in the real-life experiences of the late Father Gabriele Amorth, the Catholic priest who served for 30 years as the head exorcist of the Diocese of Rome. Its screenwriting credits proclaim as much, for starters, while a surfeit of onscreen dates and locations in the early going lend proceedings the faintest of docudrama veneers; moreover, the film is backed by the non-profit production arm of the Jesuit research university Loyola Marymount, with Loyola rector Father Edward J. Siebert among its executive producers.

As summer must eventually come to an end, so must these titles’ time on Netflix.

With Halloween right around the corner, the streaming service will remove all eight seasons of “The Vampire Diaries,” as well as several thriller and horror films including “Nightcrawler,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” “Seven” and “Insidious” so be sure to watch these spooky season classics before the end of the month.

The streaming service will no longer be the home for cherished TV series, including “Quantico,” “Saved by the Bell,” “Gotham” and “Dark Matter.” Netflix will also scrap classic titles, like “Catch Me If You Can,” “Mean Girls,” “Taxi Driver,” “Dirty Harry” and “Dumb and Dumber.”

If you were being pursued by a wily killer in the woods, could you survive? Don’t look for me alive, that’s for certain; at the first sign of trouble I would be tangled up in a bush, or drown in five inches of water. Let’s not even start on the deadly wildlife, chopping wood, making a fire, or the inconvenience of being slain on holidays. That last point is a bit of a sticky one for the protagonists of Rituals (1977), a Canadian spin on Deliverance that would probably pair better with Jeff Lieberman’s Just Before Dawn (1981). And if you’ve seen that intense shocker, you’ll know you’re in good company.

Released in Canada in July, a full year before the States, Rituals received some good notices but performed poorly with audiences, and was quickly forgotten. But time has a path to redemption, especially for films that deserve that reappreciation.

Netflix has not announced the film’s release date.

Producers on “Ivy” include Tripp Vinson for Vinson Films and Daniel Bekerman for Scythia Films. In addition to penning the screenplay, Cohen and Halberg will serve as executive producers. Christopher Yurkovich, Alex Ordanis and Tara Farney are also executive producing.

Exclusive: The Ready Or Not gang of filmmakers Radio Silence and scribes Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy, are coming back together to work on the MGM horror high school movie Reunion.

Radio Silence, composed of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella, will direct and produce off a screenplay and story by Busick, who co-wrote the story with Murphy.

Busick and Radio Silence recently were in production on Spyglass Media Group and Paramount’s reboot of Scream, due out 2022.

Without fail, at the start of every year, there’s a lot of chatter about how January is the prime dumping ground for “bad horror,” and I gotta tell you, it really bums me out. Sure, there will always be misfires released in any given month of the year, but as a whole, I love the month of January for horror, simply because it seems like for every dud, there are a few films that really swing for the fences, and you just never know what you’re going to get. “The Blackcoat’s Daughter” director Osgood Perkins has signed on to write and direct the supernatural thriller “Incident at Fort Bragg” for Lionsgate.

The project is inspired by the true story of Irish priest Malachi Martin, who was brought in by the U.S. government to perform a sanctioned exorcism on a young soldier at Fort Bragg, N.C., the largest military installation in the world.

FlynnPictureCo’s Beau Flynn will produce. Flynn previously produced “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” which totaled $144 million worldwide for Screen Gems, and “The Rite,” starring Anthony Hopkins, which earned $96 million worldwide.

Scott Glassgold of Ground Control Entertainment is also a producer, with Scott Sheldon of FlynnPictureCo serving as executive producer. Meredith Wieck and Aaron Edmonds are overseeing development of the project for Lionsgate.

AMC’s FearFest is right around the corner now and features plenty of heart-racing movies for viewers to sink their teeth into as Halloween nears. Going on its 23rd straight year, the channel’s annual spooky marathon promises to scare the you-know-what out of anyone brave enough to watch the 19 consecutive days of bone-chilling programming.

Exclusive: Torrey DeVitto (Chicago Med) has signed with Abrams Artists Agency for representation in talent, commercials, and voiceover.

DeVitto is known for her role as Dr. Natalie Manning in NBC’s Chicago Med, which was renewed for a fifth season earlier this year. DeVitto was previously seen as Maggie Hall in the final season of Lifetime’s Army Wives, Melissa Hastings in the ABC Family/Freeform series Pretty Little Liars, Dr. Meredith Fell in the CW’s The Vampire Diaries and Carrie in The CW drama One Tree Hill.

Rutger Hauer, the actor who played the villainous Roy Batty in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic Blade Runner and so many other awesome roles in his acting career has passed away.

It’s being reported that he passed on July 19th in the Netherlands after a long illness, and he was 75 years old. According to Deadline, his funeral was held today.

Hauer was a great and super entertaining actor that has left behind a legacy of genre films that also include Ladyhawke, The Hitcher, Blind Fury, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Sin City, Batman Begins, Hobo With a Shotgun, The Rite, and a lot more.

One of my favorite films that he starred in was Blind Fury, where he played a badass and skilled blind Vietnam vet with a sword. If you haven’t seen that movie, you’ve got to put it on your list of movies to see!

Exclusive: Nat Geo has recast one of the three leads in its upcoming scripted series The Right Stuff, based on Tom Wolfe’s best-selling nonfiction book. Former Once Upon a Time star Colin O’Donoghue will portray Lt. Gordon Cooper opposite Patrick J. Adams and Jake McDorman, taking over for Joe Dempsie, who had to exit the series because of visa issues.

Tomorrow is the centenary of the birth of one of cinema’s greatest directors, Ingmar Bergman, and to celebrate, The Criterion Collection has announced of their most expansive releases ever. This November, they will release Ingmar Bergman’s Cinema, a 39-film box set comprising nearly all of his work, including 18 films never before released by Criterion. Curated akin to a film festival, the set features Opening, Centerpiece, and Closing Films, with many double features in between. The set also features 11 introductions and over five hours of interviews with the director himself, six making-of documentaries, a 248-page book, and much more.

The supernatural horror thriller The Prodigy (previously titled Descendant), will be released by Orion Pictures theatrically in the U.S. on Feb. 8, 2019. The film, which stars Taylor Schilling (Orange Is the New Black) and Jackson Robert Scott, follows a mother who is concerned about her young son’s disturbing behavior and starts to think that something supernatural may be affecting him.

The film was directed by Nicholas McCarthy (The Pact) and based on an original screenplay by Jeff Buhler. Also in the film is Peter Mooney (Burden of Truth), Colm Feore (Thor), and Brittany Allen (Jigsaw).

The Prodigy was produced by Tripp Vinson. The executive producers are Nick Spicer, Buhler, Lisa Zambri and Daniel Bekerman.

Australian writer Michael Petroni has been confirmed as a speaker at this year's National Screenwriters' Conference in March.

Petroni, whose writing credits include The Book Thief, The Rite and The Chronicles of Narnia, has joined this year's lineup of speakers strong lineup of speakers at the conference which is being held from March 9-11 at the Silverwater Resort in Phillip Island, Victoria.

Chicago – Women in Film (Wif) Chicago is a advocate group for women filmmakers, on-set professionals and executives in the creative arts, and every year they present their Focus Awards to significant contributors in those arenas. The honorees in 2014 were Shira Piven, Susan Credle, Erin Sarofsky and Christina Varotsis.

The event took place on November 5th, 2014, at the Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago, and was hosted by marketing executive Melissa Thornley. Each of the recipients were feted with a video tribute, and each told their stories when they accepted the award. HollywoodChicago.com spoke with three of the honorees, with a diversity of voices for women in the film and creative industries.
