I wanted to change the world,” Nye says on his ambitious and apocalyptic six-episode Peacock series “The End is Nye,” “I want people to take action.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Nye is the co-writer, executive producer and host of the docuseries that’s designed to scare viewers into seizing the opportunity to halt potential disasters before they threaten the planet.

Is it time for South Korea’s TV drama series to move over and make way for Korean unscripted entertainment — namely game shows and reality shows?
While 2003 drama series “Jewel in the Palace,” or the more recent “Crash Landing on You,” “Memories of the Alhambra,” “Mr. Queen,” “Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce)” and “Descendants of the Sun” have for years successfully tugged at emotional heartstrings across Asia, the unscripted category has equally long been a staple of Korean domestic TV.
Korean variety shows have been a catch-all with multi-generational appeal. Talent contests have worked well in the home market, but often were too quirky — too much dialogue, or distracting titles flashing across the screen — which meant that they were best exported as formats rather than finished shows.
Examples of those include Mbc’s 2015 hit “King of Mask Singer,” which became “The Masked Singer” for Fox in the U.S. (and...

Exclusive: The Masked Singer might just be getting the Coronation Street treatment.
ITV is understood to be preparing more Masked Singer mashups with its stalwart shows as The Masked Dancer’s budget is redirected, Deadline understands.
The Masked Dancer will definitely not air in 2023 and could be axed full stop, while ITV instead looks at making more Masked Singer mashups in the vein of last year’s The Masked Singer: I’m a Celebrity special, with several expected to be dotted throughout the year.
Sources from the UK entertainment sector said ITV will continue utilizing its tentpole brands for the mashups and one speculated long-running soap Coronation Street could be next.
Along with I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and Britain’s Got Talent, The Masked Singer has become one of ITV’s biggest entertainment juggernauts, with the final airing tomorrow. It regularly attracts more than 5M viewers.

Ashley Tisdale stuns on the red carpet. Pic credit: ©ImageCollect.com/Izumi Hasegawa/Hollywood Newswire
High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale knows a thing or two about balance. The star posted a picture that showcased her sculpted abs and her love of pizza.
The actress wore black and white patterned pants with a matching top. She left the collared shirt unbuttoned, and the black tube top she wore underneath showed off her fit figure.
Ashley smiled as she bit into a slice of pizza.
She wore her brown hair in loose waves, and her minimal makeup showed her summer glow. Her tan only emphasized her toned midriff.
The second photo showed the star in a meditative pose with her legs crossed and palms facing up. Both images showed off the actress’s collection of minimalist tattoos.

The night before HBO’s “Somebody Somewhere” was set to shoot an episode revolving around a tornado, a real one came close to the show’s set. “Somebody Somewhere” star Bridget Everett recounted to Variety‘s Awards Circuit podcast how life imitated art that day, and vice versa.
“There was a real tornado that ripped through Naperville (Ill.) and also not far from where we were staying in Lamont,” she says. “Jay Duplass was directing that episode, and the people in the Duplass’ post, the VFX and all that stuff, they knew how to make it look real, and to kind of fake it in the right ways. But it was important to me that it felt like a real tornado, because I’m from Kansas, and I know what that shit looks and feels like.”

“We’re already counting down to see who’s hiding behind those infamous masks in 2023 and look forward to welcoming the series back to ITV and ITV Hub next year.

Fox Entertainment and Hulu have entered a programming deal that will allow Hulu to stream all episodes of Fox's unscripted series, including "The Masked Singer," "Lego Masters," "I Can See Your Voice," "Name That Tune," "The Masked Dancer," "Gordon Ramsay's 24 Hours to Hell and Back," "MasterChef," and "MasterChef Junior." As someone who consumes cooking competitions as an anxiety balm, this is fantastic news.
What this means is that you won't have to hunt down clips of earlier seasons when you want to catch up on your new favorite show. I don't know about you, but it's endlessly frustrating to try to figure...

Fox Entertainment and Hulu have set a comprehensive output deal enabling the Disney-owned service to stream all out-of-season episodes of many Fox series, including all of the network’s unscripted fare.
The unscripted titles involved include The Masked Singer, Lego Masters, I Can See Your Voice, Name That Tune, The Masked Dancer, Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back, MasterChef and MasterChef Junior. In addition, Hulu will stream Fox animated comedy HouseBroken, which features the voices of Lisa Kudrow, Will Forte, Clea DuVall, Nat Faxon, Sharon Horgan, Tony Hale, Sam Richardson and Jason Mantzoukas.
The output deal also includes future unscripted programming that will be owned and controlled by Fox Entertainment.
The agreement preserves a shared exclusive with Fox-owned streaming platform Tubi. Fox Corp. acquired the free, ad-supported platform in early 2020, soon after it embarked on a new corporate chapter upon the close of a $71.3 billion deal with Disney.

NBC and Ellen DeGeneres will not be teaming up again for another season of fun and games. “Ellen’s Game of Games,” which has aired on the network for four seasons, has been canceled, Variety has confirmed. This coincides with the conclusion of the comedian’s award-winning daytime talk show, slated to end this upcoming spring with Season 19.
DeGeneres served as host and executive producer of the one-hour alternative series, which included supersized versions of some of the most popular games from “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” The series also features Stephen “tWitch” Boss who, with DeGeneres, oversaw the contestants playing different games over four rounds. The winner of each round advanced to the “Know or Go” stage, and the winner of that round proceeded to “Hot Hands” for a chance to win a $100,000 cash prize.
The move to end the spinoff series isn’t entirely surprising, given that DeGeneres’ current contract ends this year.

Argonon Group, the parent company behind “The Masked Singer U.K.” has unveiled a company re-brand and new strategy for growth.
With offices in London, LA, New York, Glasgow and Liverpool, Argonon owns Scottish indie production company Bandicoot, which makes the U.K. version of “The Masked Singer” as well as “The Masked Dancer.”
The company celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2021.
Argonon’s revamped logo, which is accompanied by the new strapline “The world watches,” features the company’s name in stripped-back font with the central “o” enlarged or replaced by the image of an eye. It was first broadcast on Jan. 1 during “The Masked Singer U.K.”
According to the company, the logo “[highlights] the millions of viewers watching Argonon’s content across the world; as a representation of the range of talent and characters seen in the group’s programming; reflecting the diversity of the group’s talent, on and off-screen.

ITV has commissioned a second season of South Korean spin-off format The Masked Dancer.
The eight-episode series-order for Argonon indie Bandicoot Scotland comes as ITV preps to air the third run of The Masked Singer UK, as the two become established parts of the network’s Saturday night schedule.
The Masked Dancer sees 12 celebrities dancing in masks as judges Oti Mabuse, Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall and Mo Gilligan attempt to guess who they are, with at least one eliminated each week as host Joel Dommett presides. Last year’s competition was won by gymnast Louis Smith, who was disguised as Carwash.
While it didn’t rate as well as The Masked Singer, the show still regularly topped 3M overnight viewers – a solid showing for a spin-off entertainment offering. There had, however, been rumors that the show would be cancelled after one run as ITV looks to return Britain’s Got Talent to the schedules,...

Exclusive: Simon Cowell’s ITV format Walk The Line has started attracting interest from global buyers, according to exec producer Lee McNicholas, who praised South Korean entertainment shows for “ripping up the rulebook” and “forcing us to re-examine the way we approach formats.” Distributor ITV Studios Global Entertainment is in conversation with several territories over the sale of the six-parter, McNicholas said.

It appears that the Fox programmers are trying to capitalize on the success of The Masked Singer by introducing other talent competitions. Last season, the network tried Game of Talents and The Masked Dancer with mixed success. Will Alter Ego be the hit they're looking for? Will it be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned.
A singing competition series, the Alter Ego is hosted by Rocsi Diaz with Alanis Morissette, Nick Lachey, Grimes, and will.i.am serving as judges. The show provides a different take on an old format by combining talent and motion capture technology. In this series, lost dreams and second chances are reignited when singers from all walks of life become the stars they’ve always wanted to be. However, the contestants won’t perform as themselves. Rather, they’ll be given the chance to show how they’ve always wanted to be...

Oscar winner and “American Idol” alum Jennifer Hudson is adding something completely different to her resume: Talk show host.
Hudson, most recently seen on the big screen playing Aretha Franklin in “Respect,” is pitching a new daytime talker to be produced by the team from “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Variety has learned. Although not technically an “Ellen” replacement — her show wouldn’t be a continuation of the “Ellen” deals and is being shopped as an entirely new series — it would be positioned as Warner Bros. TV’s new flagship daytime talk show now that “Ellen” is ending its run.
“Ellen” executive producers Andy Lassner and Mary Connelly also served as show runners on Hudson’s test show, which was recently shot on the “Ellen” stage and is now being used as part of the pitch to station groups. Those meetings are taking place this week and appear to be going...

Exclusive: Keshet Productions’ rebranded UK non-scripted arm Interstellar has picked up an ITV pilot commission for a celebrity dance format.
All Star Dance Off will most likely air around the Christmas period on youth-skewing portfolio channel ITV2, according to an ITV spokesman who confirmed the order.
The format is in its early stages and Deadline understands the show will shortly enter production, with the four celebrity contestants not yet confirmed.
The greenlight is one of the first for Israeli media company Keshet’s Interstellar, which Deadline revealed had rebranded in May, at which point the Greenbird-owned David Williams-led producer unveiled shows for UKTV and Cbbc.
Interstellar already makes ITV2 formats Singletown and Celebrity Showmance, which were commissioned prior to the rebrand.
ITV is seeking the next generation of entertainment formats following the cancellation of The X Factor after 15 seasons in July, though the main channel already has ITV Studios’ successful dance format Dancing On Ice,...

The hunt for hit international unscripted IP, à la “The Masked Singer,” continues apace.
Fox Entertainment and in-house studio Fox Alternative Entertainment have launched an international unscripted format fund to find IP for the global marketplace.
The fund will invest in and develop internationally originated unscripted concepts that range from reality-competition and variety series to dating and other genres. Both networks and platforms will be targeted by the fund, which will look for cost-effective programs.
Fae will co-produce series selected by the fund with each series’ partner. Rob Wade, president of alternative entertainment and specials at Fox Entertainment, will oversee the initiative.

As she slowly awakens from the “dream” of working with director Steven Spielberg on “West Side Story,” Maddie Ziegler is teasing some of the upcoming musical’s standout scenes, including the iconic “Dance at the Gym” number.
The “Dance Moms” alum stars as Velma in Spielberg’s film adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical, about two teenagers (played by Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler) of different ethnicities, who find love in New York.
“It’s always nerve-wracking to do a remake of something, especially something so iconic, but [Spielberg] really stayed true to the 1960s, which is amazing,” Ziegler, 18, told Variety backstage last weekend at the 2021 iHeartRadio Music Festival at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena. “We had all of our costumes handmade and the full undergarments and everything they wore in the ‘60s, which was awesome.”

Fox alternative entertainment head Rob Wade said the quick spread of the Covid-19 delta variant this summer caught everyone off guard — and led to the outbreak of cases registered on the set of “The Masked Singer.”
Last month Los Angeles County’s Public Health department reported 12 confirmed positive Covid-19 cases at Red Studios Hollywood, where “The Masked Singer” was shooting its sixth season. Production wasn’t shut down, however, and Wade says the season — the first with an audience back in studio since the pandemic began — will look and feel much like a return to normal for the show.
But that took a lot of effort — and the outbreak had a “huge impact” on the show, Wade said. “You have to realize with ‘Masked Singer,’ we had done two seasons of ‘Masked Singer’ and a season of ‘Masked Dancer.’ This was our fourth ‘Masked’ franchise within 18 months. It’s all...

“The Masked Singer” producer Fox Alternative Entertainment (Fae) and Dublin-headquartered outfit BiggerStage will jointly produce variety competition series “The Big Deal” for Ireland’s Virgin Media Television.
The series, presented by Vogue Williams, features celebrity judges including pop legend Boy George; comedian and actor Deirdre O’Kane; Aston Merrygold, formerly of boy band Jls and recent finalist on “The Masked Singer”; talent show favourites Jedward; and rising music star Lyra.
After each act, the performers are offered a deal: they can either accept a cash buyout and leave the competition with a useful sum of money — or they can reject the offer and hope they’ve impressed the judges enough to progress through to the final and the chance to win a life-changing prize pot.

“The Masked Singer” was a huge hit for ITV when it premiered in 2020 (a year after the American version debuted). Following the success of the spin-off show “The Masked Dancer” in the USA, it wasn’t a surprise when ITV commissioned a series of this dance-themed edition as well.
“The Masked Dancer UK” follows the same format as the original show, with one very big difference. Instead of raising their voices in song, the famous folk hidden elaborate costumes are tapping their toes. Each episode will see at least one contestant eliminated and unceremoniously unmasked.
“The Masked Dancer” will air nightly from Saturday, May 29 to Sunday, June 6 Each episode is 90 minutes long; Saturday’s premiere starts at 7 p.m. while the rest begin at 7:30 p.m.

Fremantle has acquired production rights to format “The Masked Dancer” in 29 territories across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
The dance guessing show is a spin-off format of “The Masked Singer” originally created by Mbc in South Korea. It sees celebrity contestants wear head-to-toe costumes and face masks that conceal their identities, while performing a dance. A panel of judges then attempts to guess the dancers’ identities using clues given.
“The Masked Dancer” premiered on Fox in the U.S. in December, 2020. It began as a segment on “The Ellen Show,” the popularity of which spawned a series commission. A U.K. version of the show bows on broadcaster ITV on May 29.
Vasha Wallace, EVP global acquisitions and development, Fremantle, said: “Hot off the success we’ve had globally with ‘The Masked Singer,’ we are delighted to now be representing ‘The Masked Dancer.’ We are already in active discussions with...

CBS clearly knew what it was doing when it decided to launch Queen Latifah’s “Equalizer” reboot behind Super Bowl Lv in February. Despite a lopsided game that forced a lot of viewers to tune out before the after-show, CBS nonetheless managed to open “Equalizer” with 20.4 million viewers, and continue to hold on to a sizable percentage of that audience through the end of its freshman season.
The networks used to regularly premiere new shows behind the Super Bowl, but mostly gave up on that practice by the mid-1990s after several flops. But “Equalizer” was a reminder that it can still work — with the right show. “Equalizer” has the distinction of being the season’s top-rated new series among adults 18-49 (1.9 rating) and total viewers (12.7 million).

This week, broadcast networks and their streaming counterparts are showing advertisers and the general public what they’ve got for the upcoming season. While it’s far too early to judge the actual shows, a sense of promise — or of doubt — can be picked up from these early looks out of the upfronts presentations.
Here’s a look, in rough descending order, of how this critic is feeling about each show’s potential, first from NBCUniversal’s Peacock (trailers for NBC proper have yet to be released), then Fox.

Fox is currently working out its strategy for its Masked universe and whether The Masked Dancer will continue to fit into that.
The show, which premiered on December 27, has yet to be renewed for a second season but the network’s alternative chief Rob Wade said that it was currently figuring out where and when it might fit if it was to be renewed.
“We’re really happy with The Masked Dancer, we thought it was a great show,” Wade said. “We are just figuring out where it fits into our Masked strategy. We’re looking to see where and when that would play best. We filmed it right in the middle of the pandemic and we took a lot of lessons from it. We’ve got a lot of really nice ideas should there be a season two and we’re figuring out where and when that might be.

“Masked Singer” is still a smash hit in its fifth season, and spinoff “The Masked Dancer” was no ratings slouch itself. (Though it was also no “Masked Singer.”)
Season 6 of “The Masked Singer” is set to dominate the fall, but in a lengthy press release this morning outlining its programming plans for the 2021-22 TV season, Fox had no mention whatsoever of a second season for “Dancer.” On the subsequent conference call, TheWrap asked the network’s alternative-programming boss Rob Wade what’s up with that: Is “Masked Dancer” going to return in midseason, next summer, or not at all?
“We’re really happy with ‘The Masked Dancer. I thought it was a great show,” Wade replied. “Currently, we are just figuring out where it fits into our ‘Masked’ strategy.”
“We’ve announced the ‘Singer’ for the fall,” he continued. “And really, we’re just looking to see where and when [‘Masked Dancer’] will play best.
